How should you present yourself? Is this the photo I should use? What about this? Which one would you use? Actually, I am much prouder of the one on the left than the one on the right because it was one that I took after completing RAGBRAI which is a bike ride across the whole state of Iowa. BUT obviously I wouldn’t use that photo for a professional presentation of myself because that is not what people expect. There are specific expectations about how people should dress professionally. SOOOOOOO what should you do to present yourself? What is the best way for supervisors or potential employers to know who you are as a professional? What about a resume?
Here is a resume. Standard textual representation of your education and experience. The only problem is that it’s 2-dimensional doesn’t do much to really show who you are . . . What else can we do? . . .
Let’s add a photo. Notice I selected the more professionally-acceptable photo. It adds a little more personality but is it enough? I need to show more about me. How should I do that? What about tests . . .
What you want is something that tells about the Whole You. It might include your photo and your resume and your test scores, but more importantly, it needs to have parts that provide a 3-dimensional understanding of who you are and how you teach and what you do.
First thing you have to do is find all of your STUFF. This is called the FOLIO. It is all the stuff you have in your file cabinets, boxes, on shelves, under the bed, on your harddrive, on the Web, whatever you find it’s possible fodder for your folder.
Typically the way these portfolios are organized is in what we call “Standards Indexed” format. The notebook has six tabs and artifacts are placed behind the appropriate tab. The initial way for evaluators to identify whether or not all of the standards are equally addressed is for them to look at the notebook and see if they all are equally represented.
