Germanene
An European United Research Group developed bidimensional
germanene, which is composed of a single layer of germanium
atoms. It may have great property of electricity and optics, which
get prospect in application of various electronic equipment. The
researching result was reported in<New Journal of Physics> on
Sept. 10, 2014.
This kind of bidimensional material was mentioned in 2009, but till
now, researchers still get problems to prove it. From that time on,
graphene got further development and other bidimensional
material as silicene was systhesized.
According to Sept.10 report of Physicists Organization Website ,
Systhesis methods of germanene is similar with silicene’s. Under
ultra-high vacuum, single germanium atom deposit to one layer of
substrate under high temperature. Researchers sythesized this
material to platinum substrate.
Researchers said, “Thought about systhesis methods of silicene,
we try to sythesized this new material with same way through
depositing germanium to silver substrate, but it failed, so we turn to

platinum substrat, that is platinum grew on germanium substrate,
which would be one method worth trying.
After depositing germanium atoms to platinum substrate,
researchers analyzed electronic structure of this material by
spectral measurement and DFT calculation, which could be
assured germanene. Further more, it show special honeycomb
structure of bidimensional material through scanning tunneling
microscopy.
Researchers thought this material may be grew on soft gold film
substrate. There is no doubt that it is cheaper than platinum, which
allow large-scale growing. In addition, its special property could
make it firm bidimensional topological insulator, especially under
room temperature, it make it possible to use in quantum
computing.
Germanium is a kind of important semiconductor material, which is
used in transistor and various electronic device. Main terminal
application is optical fiber systems and infrared optics, which is
also catalysis for polymerization reaction. According to <2013-

demands. Infrared optical devices made of germanium is used as
