A presentation to the students at the School of Design, Victoria University of Wellington during September 2010. The talk covered process, methods, design communication, user research, interaction design and case studies from recent work at Click Suite.

2. DON’T THINK “ SYSTEM” Too often technology solutions focus on a tool, product or sub-system.

3. THINK “ ECO SYSTEM” But we need to understand where it fits into the bigger system.

4. In the mid 1950s Auckland had trams. Business influencers thought they knew better.

5. Trams were ripped out and replaced with buses. This contributed to congestion problems.

6. Now, Auckland suffers from this. In the world’s top 20 for the worst traffic jams.

7. Just like technology solutions, we compromise, hack and tack on to try and patch bad decisions.

8. It’s like an over-bloated website where new features just make it even more confusing.

9. In the 1960s this was a new vision for Auckland’s rail system. Having a vision is good.

10. Look what happened over 40years later. Look familiar?
