1, Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
In the music video I have chosen it is made obvious the genre is hip hop through costume and setting. The rapper
Phife Dawg is wearing a baseball cap and the setting behind him is a brick wall covered in graffiti which is a large
part of hip hop culture.

In the video I have chosen another rapper throws a punch in the air when he says "can I get a hit"
this is an example of a relationship between the lyrics and visuals.

In the video I have chosen the actors and artists in the video dance to the track itself this is an example
of the relationship between the music and the visuals.

In the video I have chosen each rap artist has a close up in the video, extras do not get a close up,
this is an example of the demands of the record label.

In the video I chose there are separate screens on one screen and the artists on one screen interact with the
artists on the other.

In the video I chose I could not find any reference to film, tv and other music videos however the video did use a
computer effect which looks relatively primitive to us but in 1992 was probably quite advanced and the audience
would be able to relate to this computer layout. Not very relevant but a feature of the video none the less.

10. 1, Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
In this screen shot from jamiroquai’s video for you give me something you can easily
tell the genre is image as it is full of close ups similar to the example above.

11. 2, there is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.
This screenshot is an example of a relationship between lyrics and visuals.
The lyrics are “my heart, it started thumping” and jamiroquai bangs his fist
against the left side of his chest as he sings the words.

Through out the video jamiroquai and other extras dance in time to the actual
song. The example above shows them all dancing in a bedroom.

As well as being a common image characteristic being center stage can also be the
demands of the record label. It is vital that listeners can put the music to the face, this is the
reason that jamiroquai is in the center of almost every shot.

In the you give me something video there is only one example of the notion of looking. There is
one point where the video is actually the camera in a photo shoot. The still above is an example
of one of these photos.

The still above shows jamiroquai going up some stairs. As he does this he sings “and heaven only seems a stem
away. He is making strong connections like this throughout the video. This is a strong example of intertextuality.

16. Biz Markie, Just A Friend

17. 1, Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
Biz Markie’s music video for his song Just A Friend fits into the genre of narrative. The image above shows Biz
pointing at the listener and actually says “let me tell you a story”. The genre could literally not be anymore
obvious.

In the song Biz raps “Yo, could you tell me where is dorm three. The photo above is basically a visual
example of him doing this. The video is probably one of the best examples of a narrative music video.

When the piano chorus plays, Biz proceeds to play the piano in the video. This is a very clear link between the visuals
and the music.

Like many music videos the record label want the star to be center stage all the time and this video is no an exception.
Biz Markie is in the center of almost every shot. He is also wearing Nike clothing which may have been a demand of the
record label if they were sponsored by Nike.

In this screenshot the camera is the point of view from the security guards office. This is an example of the notion of
looking.

The whole video is about how biz is in love with a girl and as an intertextual reference he is dressed up in white
shorts and a tee shirt covered in love hearts.
