What is a Preposition?
A preposition is a word that connects nouns,
pronouns and phrases to other words in a
sentence.
A preposition comes before a noun or pronoun
to show place, time or direction.

• Are my keys on the table?
• We often eat at her house.
• After dinner, we usually eat dessert.

Prepositions of Place:
We use the prepositions at, on, or in to talk about where things
are:
Where do you work?
at the hospital.
Where is your dog?
in the backyard.
Where are the keys?
on the table.

Preposition of place: at
• used when we are talking about a place for a specific activity:
I’m staying at home tonight.
They need to be at the airport in an hour.
Can you drop me off at the hotel?
• used for a position or specific address, or “next to/beside”:
Her children were at her side.
Can taller people please stand at the back?
I am waiting at the car.
I live at 225 Bond Avenue.

Preposition of place: on
• used to say in contact with, touching
• also used for public transportation
(planes, buses)
Please put the dishes on the table.
Mom is on the ladder painting the ceiling.
We’re on the bus now.

• We also use on for lines (including rivers,
borders, streets, etc.) and sometimes
islands.
London is on the River Thames.
The Pyrenees mountains are on the border
of Spain and France.
There's a market on James Street.

“We use in to talk about a place that is
inside a bigger space, such as a box, a
house, a city or a country”:
The plane is in the sky.
My sister lives in the city.
Jill ate lunch in the garden.

“We also use in with other physical locations
such as:
in the world
in water / the sea / a river / a lake / a pool
in the mountains / the countryside / the
forest
in a car / a taxi”

Use at:
• for a general location or position,
• a specific address or, or a public place/shop
I am at the front door.
The children are at school.
Use on:
• to say in contact with, or touching
• with roads/streets or things that can be thought of as a “line” (rivers)
The coat is on the hook.
San Diego is on the ocean.
Use in:
• Inside or surrounded by, and with places (cities, towns, countries)
The hat is in the box.
The car is in the garage.

We also use the prepositions at, on, or in to talk about when:
When did you come home last night?
at eleven.
When are you finished working?
on January 6th.
When where you born?

• You use “at” when you’re talking about clock time or a specific time
in the day.
The movie is at 8:45 pm.
I’ll come back at lunch time to pick you up.
Be home at midnight, you hear me?

• You use “on” when you’re talking about a specific day.
I’ll see you on Thursday!
They met on May 10th, 2001.

• You use “in” when you’re talking about a period of time:
~ periods of the day: in the morning/afternoon/evening
~ weeks: in the third week of November
~ months: in September
~ years: in 1999, in the following year
~ centuries: in the 21st century
