Predicative Adjectives
An Adjective is a parts of speech that describe an attribute or the state of being of a noun
(or a pronoun).
For example:
a red dress – the word “red” is an adjective because it tells us how the “dress” (a noun) is
Most of the time the adjectives are easy to spot because they come immediately before the
nouns they modify.
But adjectives can modify nouns even without appearing right before them in a sentence.
For example: He is not happy that John looked daggers at him.
“Happy” is used with the verb “to be” to form the predicate of that sentence.
It modifies the subject (he). In this case the adjective happy is called a predicative adjective.
11. 11
Predicative Adjectives
Predicate adjectives are connected by linking verbs.
Some commonly used linking verbs include:
be and all of its forms: be, is, are, am, was, were, been, being
look, appear, sound, taste, smell, feel, become, seem, grow, turn, make, stay, keep, and
remain
Examples:
Halloween is awesome! That sounds great!
The food smells gross.
Activity: Your turn! Use two of the linking verbs above and use them
with a predicative adjective in sentences of your own.
