• A phrasal verb is a verb that is made up of a
main verb together with an adverb or a
preposition, or both.
• Their meaning is not obvious from the meanings
of the individual words themselves.
– He always looked up to me.

If the object is a pronoun, it has to be placed
between the verb and the particle.

• To pay all the money that you owe to somebody,
especially when you do not want to or when the payment
is late.

risk) to be successful and bring good results

– to pay somebody what they have earned and tell them
to leave their job
– to give somebody money to prevent them from doing

  • 23. Phrasal verbs • A phrasal verb is a verb that is made up of a main verb together with an adverb or a preposition, or both. • Their meaning is not obvious from the meanings of the individual words themselves. – He always looked up to me.

My husband paid down the mortgage. Structure 1- A) separable phrasal verbs Structure 2 Noun (subject) Verb Particle Noun (object) He will pay for his mistake. My husband looks after the children on Monday. Structure 1- B) inseparable phrasal verbs
  • 25. Phrasal verbs If the object is a pronoun, it has to be placed between the verb and the particle. A: When did he pay off his mortgage? B: He paid it off last year.
  • 26. Pay back • To return money that you borrow from somebody. • To pay (somebody) back for something – to punish someone for making you or someone else suffer.
  • 27. Pay up • To pay all the money that you owe to somebody, especially when you do not want to or when the payment is late.
  • 28. Pay off • Pay off – (of a plan or an action, especially one that involves risk) to be successful and bring good results • To pay somebody off – to pay somebody what they have earned and tell them to leave their job – to give somebody money to prevent them from doing something or talking about something illegal or dishonest that you have done • To pay something off – to finish paying money owed for something
