• A phrasal verb is a verb that is made up of a
main verb together with an adverb or a
preposition, or both.
• Their meaning is not obvious from the meanings
of the individual words themselves.
– He always looked up to me.

If the object is a pronoun, it has to be placed
between the verb and the particle.

B: He paid it off last year.

• To return money that you borrow from somebody.
• To pay (somebody) back for something
– to punish someone for making you or someone else suffer.

• To pay all the money that you owe to somebody,
especially when you do not want to or when the payment
is late.

– (of a plan or an action, especially one that involves
risk) to be successful and bring good results
• To pay somebody off

to leave their job
