• Learning disabled students 
are those who demonstrate 
a significant discrepancy 
between academic 
achievement and 
intellectual abilities. 
• Can occur in many areas: 
1) Oral expression 
2) Listening comprehension 
3) Written expression 
4) Basic reading skills 
5) Reading comprehension 
6) Mathematical calculation and 
reasoning 
7) Spelling.
Key Phrases 
• Assistive technology- term that includes assistive, adaptive, and 
rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities and also includes the 
process used in selecting, locating, and using them 
• Universal Design for Learning- is a set of principles for curriculum 
development that give all individuals equal opportunities to learn. 
• ADHD- disorder in which a person is unable to control behavior due to 
difficulty in processing neural stimuli, accompanied by an extremely high 
level of motor activity.

• Recognition Networks- The “what” of learning. How we gather and 
categorize facts. Seeing, hearing and reading. 
• Least restrictive environment- a student who has a disability should have 
the opportunity to be educated with non-disabled peers, to the greatest
