IN WHAT WAYS DOES
YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS
AND CONVENTIONS OF
REAL MEDIA
PRODUCTS?
Masthead
• My media magazine uses forms and conventions of real media
products by my masthead. All music magazines have a masthead on
the front cover. I used the font ‘KG Wake me up’ which I got off a
website called ‘Da Font’. It connotes youth, fun, the genre of pop
and it is a modern font. It is also a serif font. From my research of
pop music magazines the style of font I chose fitted in with other
mastheads. The colours I used for my masthead were pink connoting
femininity, youth and excitement. I also used the colour white which
contrasts with the colour pink it connotes purity. I also used my
masthead in the same font on my contents page and double page
spread to create a consistent house style and for continuity
throughout my magazine as I found that this is common. My brand
identity was shown through my masthead.
Fonts
• The fonts I used within my pop
music magazine were either
from Indesign or Da Font. The
reason I used Da Font is because
it includes a range of fonts for a
variety of genres. The fonts I
chose connote fun and youth
which is typical of pop music
magazines. My fonts are mainly
sans serif and I used these fonts
as from my research I could see
they were mainly used. I created
continuity within my magazine
by using the same fonts
throughout. The colours I used
for my fonts are pink connoting
femininity, purple as it’s a
mature colour and is a feminine
colour, black which connotes
boldness and white connoting
purity.
Central Image
• My central image challenges the
stereotypical pop music magazine image
as I used a 24 year old female however
the reason I did this was because my
target audience may look up to her as a
role model and this may attract my
audience into buying my magazine. The
clothing my model is wearing in my
central image are summer clothes which
contrasts with the month it was
published which is December. This may
attract people to my magazine as
summer is popular with the age range of
people I am targeting due to parties,
going to the beach and relaxing. All my
images are of people with happy facial
expressions against light backgrounds
to make my artists stand out and to
connote purity and fun.
Mise-en-scene
• Mise en scene is used in pop music
magazines. All my images are of people
with happy facial expressions which
from my research I can see Is common.
The images are also bright to stand out
to my target audience. All the gestures
within my images connote fun. The
colour scheme I have used is vibrant
with the colours pink, purple, white
black and I used these colours due to
my target audience being teenage girls.
The colours connote excitement,
passion, purity, boldness and youth. The
clothing my models are wearing in my
images all connote youth and are
typical clothes that my target audience
would wear as they are suitable for
teenagers and young adults.
Mode of Address
• I have used forms and conventions of
real media products through my mode of
address. My language is mainly informal
and chatty as from my research and
planning I could see that this was the
language used as teenagers can relate to
it due to it being understand. I used slang
in my interview with Hannah James as I
used ‘OMG’ so that teenagers can relate
to it. However a small part of my
magazine includes formal language as In
my targeted age range there are 15-17
year olds. I used a lot of exclamation
marks throughout my magazine as this
connotes excitement.
House style

• I have created a house style by continuity of my masthead on each
page of my magazine and through my colour scheme of pink,
purple, white and black. All these colours are typical of pop music
magazines.
Brand Identity
• I created my brand identity through my bright feminine colour
palette which is consistent throughout my magazine and through
my masthead which is included on my front cover, contents page
and double page spread.
Coverlines
• My coverlines are all short and snappy as my target audience are 12-17 year
olds and so its easy for them to read. Underneath quotes I used words such as
‘WOW!’ to sum up the article and I used quotes for all my coverlines. From
looking at magazines such as We love Pop I could see they used one word to
sum up the articles. I put my splash in a circle as from my research I saw this
was used in Top Of The Pops to connote fun.
Barcode and Puffs
All the magazines I looked at include a barcode with the date and
issue number included either above it, next to the barcode or
above. I downloaded my barcode from ‘Da Font’ and included
the date, issue number and price along side it as these are
common features of pop music magazines.

From my research and planning I found out that music magazines
have puffs included on the front cover advertising either a
competition, free posters or free makeup such as mascara. For
my puff I chose to do a competition to win 2 one direction
tickets. The reason I chose one direction tickets is because they
are very popular with teenagers and are one of the biggest boy
bands with many girls desiring them. I also included my puff on
my contents page to remind my readers about the competition
and also so they can find the page for more information.
• From my research and planning I found that on double page spreads drop caps
are used at the start of the article and so I used this in my own magazine. I also
found that contents page have a neat layout with a lot of content and include
topic headings with page numbers on the left side of articles split into columns
which is why I did this on my own contents page. The image on double page
spreads in music magazines typically bleeds onto the next page so I ensured I did
the same. My main article was an interview in a question and answer style
format as it is clear and easy to read and common with music magazines such as
We love Pop.
