Analyzing The Hunger Games AP English Class

  • 2. • General Characteristics: • 12th grade AP English class • The students age ranges between 16-18 years old • There are no disabilities • 23 students- 16 White Americans; 2 Japanese Foreign exchange 1- Muslim 4 African Americans
  • 3. • By the end of the week the 12th grade AP English class will be able to analyze and interpret quality writing, apply effective strategies and techniques in their own writing, create and sustain arguments based on readings, research, or personal experience, demonstrate understanding of standard written English and analyze image as text with 85% accuracy.
  • 5. Monday: • Writing Prompt: • Power point Slide #3 • Access via http://hutchteachesenglish.wikispaces.com/Wr iting+Prompts • Students write in the comment section • Introduce Mid Term Project: • Via Blendspace • Review of Characters from previous two books • Group Activity creating a poster of: • Who is still alive • Who is dead • Don’t Know • Introduction to Mockingjay: Assign Copies of Books • Watch YouTube Video about Suzanne Collins’ discussing her classical and contemporary inspirations of the novel • Class Discussion facilitated by myself with lead questions from the text. • Homework: Read Chapters 1-5 • End of Day: • Twitter Recap for both students and parents

Tuesday: • Writing Prompt: • Power Point Slide # 16 • Access via http://hutchteachesenglish.wikispaces.com/Writing+ Prompts • Students write in the comment sections • Discuss Characteristics of the 12 Districts: • Poverty, survival, and Justice • Watch a YouTube Video about Feeding America • Research ‘Feeding America’ on Facebook • Split into pairs and work on a specific District: • Reference slideshare document on blendspace for direction • Homework Assignment: • Create a Power Point with 5 vocabulary words • Read Chapters 6-12 • Extra Credit Assignment: • Skype with someone from a different District! Wednesday • No Writing Prompt • Propaganda in Literature • Listen to a short section of a podcast on the history of Propaganda • Open Discussion • Watch a Video on propaganda commercials • Discuss how these two items (podcast & commercial) relates to our novel • Create a Propaganda Video with MovieMaker • All the guidelines for this is on Blendspace • Show my video as an example of how to create a video • Follow up Question & Answer Session on Zello • Blendspace link to show how to download & use the app • Twitter Recap: Reminder of Zello “Homework”

Thursday: • Writing Prompt: • Will come from a song on YouTube; referencing our novel • Response on Wikispaces • We will be looking at various poems and songs and one of the underlying themes of the novel • Then researching farther the history behind that theme • We will use sources such as YouTube, Powerpoint and slideshare. • Twitter Recap: Of the day • Reminder of mid term project • Beginning of Arts & Bots to collaborate with our novel
  • 9. Friday: • Writing Prompt: • Students will begin to explore ideas of ways to express a theme from the novel using a robot. Using there PDF booklet and brainstorming. • Listing the items we need in order to build our robot. • Note: We are using recycled materials • We will write reflections on our process as we move forward on Wiki. • Twitter Recap: Asking parents to send in recycled items • Reminder of mid term project
