2. genre
• In my post on genre and the chosen artist, I discuss how Billie
Eilish doesn't have a specific genre she falls into, however I will
be using the genres dark-pop and electropop to look at the
specific conventions.
• I have gone into more detail on specifically Billie Eilish's music
videos on my genre and specific artist post.
• Bjork's song doesn't fit into the dark-pop genre as the lyrics talk
about the art of being happy and that its easier than we think to
just enjoy the little things in life.
3. Lyrics/visuals;
narrative
• At first glance of Bjork's video, it's in our hands,
there doesn't appear to be a link between the
visuals and lyrics as the song is about being
happy according to Genius but the video is
quite dark and scary with Bjork lip-syncing in a
forest around really big bugs and flowers, like
something we'd expect to see in Alice in
Wonderland.
• If we look into it a bit deeper, we can make the
connection between the line "Well, now aren't
we scaring ourselves / Unnecessarily? / Aren't
we trying too hard?" and the visuals.
4. Genre
characteris
tics
• As I previously stated, Bjork's it's in
our hands is under the synth-pop
and ambient genres, however I
believe the music video has many
conventions in the dark-pop genre.
• The very low lighting, being night
vision, is used throughout this video.
• This literally falls into dark-pop as it
is quite dark and eerie.
• Another eerie aspect to this video
are the proportions.
• The bugs and flowers are the same
size or bigger than Bjork,
5. Intertexuality/post
modernism
• Alice in Wonderland (1951) – through the perspectives of
the flowers and bugs being very big compared to Bjork
• Blair Witch project – through the night vision.
6. represent
ations
• The only person
present in the video is
Bjork herself.
• In this video, Bjork is
pregnant, which is not a
conventional thing to
see in a music video but
is progressive.
• Bjork is from Iceland
and Caucasian but is
countertypical in the fact
7. Cinematography
and editing
• Vignette
• Night vision
• Layering
• Slo-mo
