2. GENRE
• In my post on genre and the chosen artist, I discuss how Billie
Eilish doesn't have a specific genre she falls into, however I will
be using the genres dark-pop and electropop to look at the
specific conventions.
• I have gone into more detail on specifically Billie Eilish's music
videos on my genre and specific artist post.
• Grimes' song Violence, fits more into the dark-pop genre than
the music video which appears to fit into the dance/electropop
genre.
3. LYRICS/VISUALS;
NARRATIVE
• Violence by Grimes is about climate change
and how humans treat the world in a
negative way, much like Billie Eilish's song
all the good girls go to hell.
• The Genius annotation says that "Violence"
is a love song that seems to be sung from
the perspective of the Earth and personifies
the relationship between humans and
climate change as an abusive one, a
relationship the Earth seems to love even at
her own expense."
• This isn't shown in the visuals of the music
4. GENRE
CHARACTERISTIC
S
• I would categorise Violence by Grimes in the dark-pop genre, however the
video fits closer in the dance/electropop genres.
• There is roughly 48 seconds of group dancing in this video and Grimes
dances by herself throughout.
• This is obviously a convention of the dance genre, however its common in
pop and electropop.
• There are lots of different shot types and lengths, which is common in Billie
Eilish's music videos, but I'll speak more on this later.
• Another common convention of dark-pop and electropop is the extravagant
outfits, makeup and set which occurs in this music video.
• Grimes's outfit in the first scene is comprised of a dress where the torso is
skin tight and looks almost like an extra terrestrial tattoo.
• The bottom part of the dress is flowy but continues these squiggly patterns.
• She also has a thin veil cape which is attached to her black fingerless
