2. OVERVIEW OF GENRE
• The Genre of the music video could also be described as the theme, because
depending on the type of music you make decides how your music video will look,
for example if you write a rock song the video will most likely be monotone with
different forms of symbolism. On the other hand if you write a pop song, your video
will be bright and bouncy and most likely be filmed on a synthetic set.
• Inside Genre there are also three main categories that music videos conform too:
• Performance- Mostly choreographed dancing on a set or stage.
• Narrative- Tells a story along side the lyrics, almost like a short film but with music
rather than speech.
• Concept- trying to portray an idea through your video.
3. POP
• In the first few second of the song the viewer can tell that it is going to be a pop
song due to the brightly coloured outfits and setting. The bouncy beat of the music
also gives it away what genre the song is.
• The video is also very stylised, having a very futuristic look and feel around it, e.g.
the outfits and setting (space themed amusement park)
• The video also fits with the conventions because
the video caters to her target audience, featuring
love, fun, etc.
• Make up and clothing also paly a large part in the
video because it portrays the futuristic feel of the
song.

Katy Perry.
4. • The video also features a choreographed dance segment
featuring a line of people moving in a very robotic and specific way, as if they were all
controlled by something.
• The video does not feature any cartoons or graphics but the overall feel of the video
is cartoony enough not to need them.
• Chained to the Rhythm also features two of the three categories, which is common
feature for pop videos:
Performance- there is aspects of dance and a choreographed routine.
Narrative- the video is telling a story of a girl going to an amusement park and falling
in love with a boy she meets on a ride.
5. ELECTRO POP
• This song fits into the Electro pop genre mainly through the music style, because it
focuses more on the harder, electronic sound of the background.
• Melanie uses instruments such as guitars and banjos in her music, then the track is
edited so it sounds more electronic.
• The Soap video also fits under the pop genre because it has bright colours, but they
are subdued slightly by a purple coloured filter, when she is singing to the camera
there is no filter, it is just bright from lights on set.
• The video also has different variations of shots, some being long to establish what is
going on, others are quick and edited to the beats in the song.
• She also caters the video to her fans because it continues the story that she started
in her previous videos. It also caters to her target audience because they like her
quirky and unusual videos, and she makes this one unusual and aesthetically
pleasing just like her others.

6. • Melanie also uses other common pop video conventions, for example, she has
segments where she sings at the camera in a mid shot.
• Costume and make up also play a massive
part in all of her music videos, she has a
clothing style that would commonly be
associated with young girls. Her make up is also
very noticeable and extreme, it is used to make her eyes appear bigger
and, along with her darkly coloured lipstick it is very recognisable.
7. ROCK
• P!atD’s song Emperors new clothes fits into the rock genre very well, apart from the
opening being quite brightly coloured, due to the lighting reflecting off of the
smoke surrounding him the rest of the video is overall quite dark and dingy looking.
• The theme of the video is also quite dark, due to the song being about the singer –
Brendon Urie – being turned into a demon, maybe symbolism for the sins that
people commit throughout their lives.
• This shot not only show the viewer him mid-
transformation but it also shows the viewer that he
likes to stick to media conventions by maintaining eye
contact with the camera whenever he can.

8. • The video overall can be said to have all three of Friths categories:
-Performance: he is performing a choreographed “dance” while singing.
-Narrative: it has the story of him arriving in hell and turning into a demon.
-Concept: it portrays the idea that everyone has a dark side and bad things happen to
all.
• The editing is also matched to the beat of the song as well as being matched to the
singers jerky movements, the camera twists and changes angle each time he moves
during transformation.
• This video also challenges rock conventions by not showing the band performing
with their instruments, it is just the lead singer performing on his own while acting
out the story, but this is also a thing that the band do quite often, even though they
are a rock band is actually very rare that they show the entire band performing (they
do in Death of a Batchelor, but that was to add to the theme of the song).
