In a sweeping meta-analysis of 225 academic studies, researchers found that happy employees have an average
31% higher productivity
37% more sales
3 times more creativity
Happy people routinely show up at work, they’re less likely to quit, they go above and beyond the call of duty, and they attract people who are just as committed to the job. Moreover they’re not sprinters, they’re marathon runners, in it for the long haul.
What makes employees happy also creates cultures that thrive and succeed.
Whether we’re in business or the organizational world when we step back from our business plans, marketing plans, and spreadsheets we see the most neglected universal fact - we’re all human!
Luckily the study of emotions in the last two decades has exploded, one of the emotions that psychologists have studied the most is happiness.
Psychologists want to know how people feel,
economists want to know what people value
neuroscientists want to know how people’s brains respond to rewards.
And orgs are looking for ever-higher perf from their workforces and people try to comply---
Organizations are looking for ever-higher performance from their workforces and people try to comply –– but the usual method of working harder and longer hours has backfired. People get exhausted, disengaged and sick and defect to healthier job environments.
Emerging research from psychology, science, neuroscience and economics makes the link between better business performance and a thriving workforce absolutely clear.
High-performing innovative organizations like Google, FB, Zynga, Twitter get it- are a function of happy, flourishing, evolving people. They have instituted some of the most leading edge practices to support high performance. They realize that what motivated boomers don’t motivate millenials or GenY’s.
And your company is incredibly unique because you are one of very few who started your company with a commitment to this philosophy. You are positioned in a sweet spot for becoming a hugely thriving and game-changing company by honoring the WHOLE PERSON...

There is an enormous amount of scientific data now on what makes us happy. 20 yrs ago positive psychology was born- Prior to that psychology primarily studied pathology/ depression/illness.. seek "to find and nurture genius and talent", and "to make normal life more fulfilling”,
Maslow (the grandfather of Positive Psychology) focused on best practices in human behavior vs worst practices
He came up with Maslow’s iconic hierarchy of needs
Engagement -depth of involvement in our work and w/
Meaning- using one’s strengths to some larger end- belonging to & serving something bigger than oneself
Western culture
Leading researchers in the field of positive psychology determined a HAPPINESS FORMULA
Happiness = Genetic Set Point + Life Circumstances + Intentional Activities
-Genetic “set point” (can be raised thru meditation/ certain kinds of therapy) 50%
-Conditions of living” (most of us expend a good deal of energy trying to improve). IE: a better body, the “right” spouse, more money, a nicer home, etc. - constitutes only 7-10% of our happiness.
-A full forty percent of our happiness comes: anything we do consistently and on purpose. TWO categories:
Actions that are “self” oriented or actions that are “other” oriented. If our actions are for personal pleasure, they produce momentary, transient happiness. On the other hand, actions that serve others are a surefire way to produce deep and lasting fulfillment. The conclusion: the surest, quickest route to happiness is to find ways to use your gifts to advance the greater good.
.
You're in an incredible position here- hand-selected because of your attitude and talents to use your gifts in ways that can ultimately make the world a better place. (meaning & engagement)
but when were in the day to day minutia ez to lose sense of meaning/purpose in interest of getting more done faster- And there are comm breakdown, frustration with process, mental or emot pinches.. This takes interpersonal skills and EQ which can be developed.
you know more than anyone that the creative process isn't always a pleasurable ride
Just like creativity it is an up and down process
Creativity is both a Pre-cursor and by-product of happinessSelf-reinforcing cycle
creativity can't just be churned out
Likewise happiness is not an end goal- there are no one set of circumstances that make someone happy; it’s more about having a healthy mental attitude toward whatever you are experiencing.
AND its a moment-to-moment creation-
ROSS school of business started looking into the factors involved in sustainable indiv
This peak performance model originated from studying athletes. Performance psychologists-found that the key to high performance on the job and in one’s personal life is not time management, but energy management.
They discovered that the capacity to mobilize energy on demand is the foundation of an ideal performance state. And that effective energy mgmt has 2 key components:
Energy expenditure-Stress Energy renewal- Recovery
Stress is seen as the problem but it’s the stimulus for growth– the real PROBLEM is the absence of disciplined, intermittent recovery. Chronic stress w/o recovery depletes energy reserves, leads to burnout and breakdown and ultimately undermines performance.—Chrono-biologists have found that the body’s hormone, glucose and blood pressure levels drop every 90 minutes or so.
A major part of TS program creating rituals for oscillation btwn stress (expenditure) and renewal (recovery)
Failing to seek recovery compromises overall capacity- short focused breaks every 90-120 minute promote significant recovery
Workers need this even more than athletes -the average prof athlete spends most of his time practicing and only a small % of time (several hrs/day, at most) actually competing. The typical worker, by contrast, devotes almost no time to training and must perform 12 hours or more a day. Unlike athletes they don’t get months off for off-season and their careers can be 40 years not seven

deficit versus growth needs
Growth is a human need. When you go to yoga you are always reaching into the stretch. Running always trying for the new time. Life is about reaching into the path of your own development forever. Being out on the skinny branches- that is where the juice is the feeling of being on purpose with your life is..
Know where your energy comes from, where it goes, and how to manage and regularly renew 4 dimensions of personal energy..
Oscillation: The most effective way to operate at work is like a sprinter, single-minded focus for periods of no longer than 90 minutes, and then taking a break.
BREATH: Even a little intentional recovery can go a long way. It’s possible, for example, to clear the bloodstream of cortisol (stress hormone that comes as a result of fight or flight mode) just by breathing deeply — in to a count of three, out to a count of six — for as little as a minute.
Neuroplasticity- Neurons that fire together wire together. = new patterns of thought can actually change the physiology of our brains. Train your brain to be positive.
As you develop new thought habits you rewire your brain and adopt a more constructive way to view your world, expand your horizons, and gain the resilience to move ahead even when bad things happen.
MEDITATION/mindfulness benefits-- increased awareness, improved concentration, and a better ability to deal with the mental and emotional stresses of modern life.
In fact socializing really pays off in terms of happiness and productivity and overall wellbeing. In a 2011 Gallup poll of over 1 million people WHEN ASKED
What improved health & wellbeing?
• opportunity to do what I do best
• someone cares about me
• my opinions matter
• socialization of great ideas
• empathy at the top of the organization
• time with friends and family (online, food, games)
If 6 hours day of social time= Thriving
In a recent WISDOM 2.0 conference I attended there was a Panel of Learning & Dev't people (Zynga, Twitter, Facebook and Google): "A Mindful Approach to Learning & Development: Addressing the Whole Person”
They agreed that the 3 things that matter to their people for fulfillment are:
1) Am I doing work that plays to my strengths?
2) How am I managing my energy?
3) Can I be my authentic self?
We’ll be getting into all of these in more detail individually and as a group as we go forward
