Censorship Of A Wide Range Of Books
From fiction to nonfiction, from romance to horror, from children's to adults, and from classics to newcomers, censorship of a wide range of books
is becoming more popular. Many forget how much influence a person can receive through the words in a book or the pictures throughout a story. The
issue of "morally destructive and offensive literature" has become a common concern among people worldwide. However, the banning of certain
books can be looked at in two completely different ways: protecting the precious minds of humankind, young or old, or forbidding those minds from
reading the particular topics that were put in place to be learned. Regardless of the content inside of them, books are the greatest teachers in the world.

However, just because people do not agree with each other or with what is being said, that is not a reason to take it all away. Taking away books
based on their content provides this idea that people are wrong in expressing their ideas and that they do not have a right to speak their mind and
show their individuality. Parents, educators, librarians, and the government would beg to differ because they believe some books can be "harmful"
to the mind. These "poisonous" factors would include racism, profanity, sex, violence, religion and so many other themes. Not all people are
affected and challenging these themes, so it is not fair to take them away just because some people do not approve. It is important for the mind to
learn about these topics because the world is not filled with all positives. Being aware of the negatives in the world and learning lessons from them is
quite important to those young and old. Prohibiting books from people will not do them any good; let them self–censor and choose what they like and
do not like to explore instead of taking away their privileges all together. Although many would say that a book serves as the greatest teacher a
person could have, many do not realize how great of a best friend that a book could essentially be. Books act as an outlet and safe haven for many
people based on how they relate to the content it contains. Readers often understand the message behind a story or the characters in that story by

The Importance Education Has on Life Essay
Education has tremendous effects that can determine how nice a person's life will be and the job that he will receive. It can decide what one will do
for the rest of his life, and it can determine how one will live our life. Good education does not come easy though. One must go through struggles in
order to obtain it. People spend years to get the degree that they want. Douglass's struggles were much worse than the struggles we endure today. The
fact that Douglass was a slave greatly hurt his chances of acquiring an education. Since he was a slave, it was illegal and dangerous for people to teach
him how to read and write because they could get in trouble with the law. Slaveholders and masters feared educated slaves. An educated slave... Show

Douglass wanted to be able to read and write so he could write about his life as a slave and his escape from slavery to freedom. Douglass became a
great speaker and writer. He wanted to open the eyes of the nation to the cruelty of slavery. Douglass became an avid abolitionist and got arrested later
on in his life for speaking against slavery. Richard LaGravenese's movie freedom writers displayed some of the modern hardships students go through
to receive an education. The most prevalent hardship that is seen today is racial intolerance. Students today do not know how to tolerate other races and
are not willing to tolerate other races. Mrs. Gruwell intended to teach her students how to tolerate and accept different races She taught them that
appearance does not make one person better than the other person. High school students are caught up in the popularity hype. In the movie, the way
to gain popularity and respect is to fight people from other races. They think that they gain a lot from beating someone up. Unfortunately, not many
people will stand up for what is right because they do not want to get ridiculed. In order to make a change you have to be willing to stick out. Mrs.
Gruwell was willing to stand out for her cause so she could make a change and to fix the problem. She was persistent. No matter the ridicule that she
received, she kept on doing what was right. Many

Essay on Censorship in Schools is not Justifiable
Censorship in School is Not Justifiable Walt Whitman once said, "The dirtiest book of all is the expurgated book." Between the years 2000 and 2009
a total of 3200 books were challenged in school libraries in an attempt to expurgate, or censor, the content in books provided to students. Today the
trend of censorship continues as popular novels such as The Hunger Games, The Fault in Our Stars, and Captain Underpants are censored from schools
across the nation (Challenges by Reason).Censorship in regards to literature refers to the examination and suppressing of a book because of
objectionable material. The process of censorship in school libraries often begins with an outspoken parent, teacher, student, or administrator and ends

Heinrich Heine states, "Wherever they burn books they will also, in the end, burn human beings." Restricting the discussion of new and controversial
ideas rather than tolerating and acknowledging the presence of new and controversial ideas is causing more pain than it is worth in the school setting.
The idea of censoring reality from school libraries is unreasoned, yet that is exactly what pro–censorship individuals advocate. The discussion and
knowledge of new, controversial, and necessary ideas among students is restricted due to censorship.
Censorship in school libraries allows teachers, administrators, peers and their parents to decide what a student may or may not read based on their
opinion. Opinion is variable between different groups of people within the school; therefore, a single person or a small group of people cannot be
trusted to make decisions on the behalf of a larger group. Kekla Magoon argues, "That no one person can be trusted to censor material, individuals can
choose to be exposed to." Expurgation, banning, and abridgement of books are not allowing students to learn how to guard themselves from topics they
do not personally believe in. Students would benefit much more if they practiced self–censorship rather than depending on adults to make decisions for
them. A

Taking a closer read at Haroun and the Sea of Stories
1. Identify & explain 5 symbols found in text.
Although Haroun and the sea of stories is a children's literature, symbols which overlap as archetypes are used to make this novel contain a deeper
meaning and be just as enjoyable for adults.
Weather in this story symbolizes the current feeling or emotion of the characters. Dull, gloomy days often occurred when the character is depressed:
"this sudden mist positively stank of sadness and gloom" (47). This symbol is clearly evident when Haroun traveled to Moody land, "the sun would
shine all night is there were enough joyful people around, and it would go on shining until the endless sunshine got on their nerves; then an irritable
night would fall a night full of mutterings and discontent, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example is the June 9th, 1985 student demonstration at Tian An Men square in China. The government attempted to stop the media from exposing
this event to the public; they also attempted to wipe out any written records of this afterwards. This is similar to how certain Chupwalas in Haroun
stitched their mouths, or vowed to remain silent under the orders of Khattam Shud who tried to stop the relay of information in his "kingdom" so to
speak.
3. Detail 3 instances in the text where the power of story is alluded to. Explain
The power of story is often referred to in this novel. For example, on page 72, "the stories were held here in fluid form, they retained the ability to
change, to become new versions of themselves, to join up with other stories and so become yet other stories...It was not dead but alive." This means
that there are many variations to one idea or one story. Old tales combined with imagination can be made into new pieces of work. "no story comes
from nowhere; new stories are born from old––it is the new combinations that make them new."(86) There is an endless possibility and no limitations
on what the story is about because new ones can always be made.
Whether it's the adventure or the escape from reality that stories provide, or that fact that it takes your mind away from tension, some people, and
personally I believe that stories have the ability to relieve stress. The power of story is implied in Haroun: "you can offer [Story

The Censorship Of Singapore ( Mda )
The practise of censorship – the restriction of ideas, action or image through the control of the media or any other medium of expression. Censorship
should be practised sensibly so that it will not restrict the development and expression of new ideas while ensuring that social and political harmony is
assured. Censorship plays a vital role in maintaining the morals of its society and creating an economically dynamic, socially cohesive and culturally
vibrant nation. (N.A, N.D) The press exert a significant influence on the public and is partly responsible for the views and values that many hold.
Hence, it should be responsible with what it put forth to the public. Singapore has gradually moved from film censorship to film classification and
now to the focus on media literacy. Media Authority of Singapore (MDA) plays a significant role in regulating and conducting matters pertaining to
the media. It is guided by legislation/acts such as Media Development Authority of Singapore Act, code of practice and guideline to comply and
enforce the entities. In this term paper, we will discuss how the media handle censorship and classification related matters as well as reviewing the
Films Appeal Committee under the films act policy. In this regard, recommendations will also be given on how to improve the clause.
The media environment has undergone major changes, driven largely by the forces of technology, media convergence and globalisation. (Media

Sociological:
The un–expose to the information and knowledge has made the students unaware about the importance of the freedom of speech. Thus influence the
interaction among them in their daily life.
Dutton's 2004 say: This publication argues for a fresh approach that moves beyond the limitations of the 'information society' concept that has been the
most common way of signifying the broad, interconnected range of social and economic changes tied to ICTs.
Rethinking access in the way proposed here opens a broader understanding of the term access' in relation to ICTs than the traditional definition that
referred primarily to physical access to ICT infrastructures, systems, and devices. It also widens the object of that access from information, as implied
by the term 'information society', to include people, services, and technologies. (p. 22)
The restriction to the access of information has made the student unaware about the right to the freedom of speech and information. Thus, they will not
make this as one of the topics of conversation in their daily life interactions.

Essay about Colonial America
Religious Freedom in colonial America
Religion was a very important part of everyday life in colonial America. Sometimes people were not allowed to question what they were taught, and
if they did so they were punished accordingly. Before 1700 some colonies had more religious freedom then others. While others colonies only
allowed religious freedom to a select group, others allowed religious freedom to all different kinds of religions. In the overall there was quite a bit of

These laws however were not re–instituted to the Catholics and Jews. Even though Catholics and Jews were deprived of freedom of worship.
Pennsylvania was still democratic; it was founded for civil and religious freedom. People there had more freedoms in Pennsylvania then they would
have if they lived in England.
Rhode Island and Pennsylvania were examples of the two most democratic colonies of colonial America. Not all of the colonies were like this. For
example, in (1629) non–separatists Puritans left from England and started a new colony called the Massachusetts Bay Colony. People who did not
agree with their views were often banished. Anne Hutchinson was one of these people who were banished. She was banished because she argued
against the Puritan belief of predestination. She had a trial and from there was forced out of the colony. Another person that was kicked out of the
colony was a man named Roger Williams. Williams was exiled from the colony because he was found to have "new and dangerous opinions" that
disagreed with already established Puritan beliefs. Also, men that were not a part of a Puritan congregation could not vote in provincial elections.
Freedom in this colony was somewhat limited.
Colonies of colonial America had different views when it came to religion, but they all had one thing in common. All of the colonies had to some extent,

The Growth Of American Individuality
The Growth of American Individuality in Relation to Self–Expression Religion is an imperfect savior. Primitive civilizations depended on religion to
explain the workings of the world; they depended on gods to protect their crops and homes from disease, drought, and other disasters far out of
human control. While this dependency provided comfort, it sacrificed individuality. Recent years has seen the rise of alternative forms of media:
novels, digital music, movies. These were not available to previous civilizations. Early Americans only had access to the Bible, which was unreadable
to the average illiterate. Newer forms of media have spurned a nation–wide reflection on the old traditions that were largely set by religion. Ever since
the founding of the colonies, and ever since more diverse forms of self–expression have become more accessible, Americans have grown in
individuality as they have become less dependent on religion. The Puritans were the first of the Europeans to settle in the Americas. While their
traditions have left a profound mark on American culture, their strict ways are rather peculiar. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller critiques Puritan society
as close–minded and obsessed about maintaining conformity. "The parochial snobbery of these people was partly responsible for their failure to
convert the Indians. Probably they also preferred to take land from heathens rather than from fellow Christians" (140). The Puritans revolved their
culture around religion,

An Article For The American Journal Of Bioethics
There are individuals in our societies, though, who believe that the dignity of life and human nature are not important in the debate of bioethics and
enhancements. Fabrice Jotterand, who wrote an article for the American Journal of Bioethics, discussed in his article that bioenhancements do not
corrupt the rational and moral structure of human personhood using the definition of dignity of German philosopher Immanuel Kant, which is that
"persons have [an] 'intrinsic worth' or dignity derived from the rational and moral structure of human personhood" (qtd. in Jotterand 46). If anything,
Jotterand states, enhancements would improve the rational mind instead of dehumanizing it; augmenting human dignity and respecting life because
enhancements are meant to transcend our "biological nature" beyond its human limits and capabilities (46, 48). However, a flaw in Jotterand's
argument is that it entails both the respect for human life and the equality of humans, which should guide biotechnology together (46). The Church
declares that in attempting to transcend life, one would break the bonds of our human nature and biology, thus interrupting in the communion of life
shared among horizontal, human relationships and the vertical relationship between humanity and God. Contrary to Jotterand's beliefs, this communion
of life would be set apart instead of equal, with discrimination of those with or without enhancements due to finances, location, or other factors. If
society cannot end

Essay on Book Banning and First Amendment Right
What is a banned book? A banned book is a book that has been removed from the shelves; it could be from a library, classroom, or even the bookstore
because of its content. A book could be banned for many reasons, but it could be banned because it contains sex, violence, inappropriate language,
religious viewpoints, witch craft, and many more things because other people deem it inappropriate. When someone bans a book they ban it for
everyone else too. The First Amendment states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free
exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the Government

The burning of the Great Alexandria Library, maybe a mistake destroyed over 700, 000 scrolls. Many of these scrolls were the only copies and the
information they held are lost forever (Heather Phillips p.4–6).
Even the Catholic Church supported censorship, in the seventieth century they wanted to censor Galileo because he believed that they church was
wrong about the planets revolving around Earth. He believe that the sun was in the center and all of the plants revolved around it and they made him
burn all of his writings. As United States citizens, we have the right of freedom of expression; the First Amendment of the United States constitution
states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of
speech, or the press..." (First Amendment Oct. 20, 2013). As this concerns books, people should have the freedom to choose what they want to read
and what they don't want to read. By banning books, our basic rights as US citizens are abused. Book banning affects many different people, from the
people who read books to the people who write them. Why do

own a Bible, to share one's faith in Christ, and even teach one's children about Jesus Christ. Those who boldly follow Christ, in spite of government
decree or opposition, can face harassment, arrest, torture and even death. Dr. Nhia Vang Vang, the pastor of the First Hmong Alliance Church in

Censorship on the Internet Essay
Censorship on the Internet
Five years after the first world wide web was launched at the end of 1991, The
Internet has become very popular in the United States. Although President
Clinton already signed the 1996 Telecommunication ActI on Thursday Feb 8, 1996, the censorship issue on the net still remains unresolved. In fact,
censorship in cyberspace is unconscionable and impossible. Trying to censor the Internet its problematic because the net is an international issue, there
is no standard for judging materials, and censorship is an abridgment of democratic spirit.
Firstly, censorship on the Internet is an international issue. The Internet was constructed by the U.S. military since 1960s, but no one actually owns it.
Thus, the Internet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why do people still argue about that?
It is all about personal points of views. Justice Douglas said, "To many the
Song of Solomon is obscene. I do not think we, the judges, were ever given the constitutional power to make definitions of obscenity."II. In cyberspace,
it is hard to set up a pool of judges to censor what could be displayed on the net.
Thirdly, censorship works against democratic spirit, it opposes the right of free speech and is a breach of the First Amendment. Do you remember
Salman
Rushdie and his book The Satanic Verses? Iranian government announced a death threat to kill Rushdie and his publishers because his book speaks
against Islam.
No one wants that to happen again. If you are one of the Internet users, you should have seen a blue ribbon logo. The blue ribbon symbolizes a
support for the essential human right of free speech. Let think about what happen if we lost the right of free speech. How can we stay online? Who
gives courage to the web's designers to put their opinion on the net? On the same day when the 1996
Telecommunication Act signed in law, a bill called House Bill 1630 was introduced by Georgia House of Representatives member Don Parsons. It is

Freedom of Speech: Should We Be Spending Money to Transmit...
The debate on the constitutionality of spending money to transmit a message has been discussed for some time now. Freedom of speech in the first
amendment covers the right to express ideas without unjustifiable government control. Should the government decide that spending money to send out
a message is unconstitutional or should they step back and remember that restrictions should not be imposed regardless of the citizen or entity? Since
freedom of speech should not be restricted for anyone, money used to transmit a belief or an idea should not be restricted either. In order for speech
to be heard in almost any facet, money will have to be spent. Political speech requires money in order for it to be heard and if someone decides to ...

The main concern regarding money being used for political purposes or contributions expenses is that the money will be used to boost approval
ratings through media outlets. Monies used for airtime that is contributed by the millions by corporations to help campaign for their choice in officials
should be considered their choice and their freedom of expression or speech. Many citizens only have television or internet as their main form of
education regarding elections, therefore this may seem threatening to campaigns that may not have the wealthy corporations backing their progress.
The problem that we are facing as a nation is not whether someone or something gives money to a political venture; it is simply education of the
citizens that are voting. Any amount of manipulation by money or campaigns should not matter if a person is educated properly on who they are
voting for and why.
Does the freedom of speech amendment protect the right to spend money to transmit a message? It is difficult to determine the ideas of the framers
that created the bill of rights in 1789. They did not have the growing media coverage to influence average citizens, instead they relied on public
appearances and the occasional print to distribute. The constitution itself is not clear and does not outline the rights speech related to money, however, it
should not matter how individual citizens or their entities choose to spend their

in American history not only for its many ups and downs, but also for its great effects on the founding and governing of America. Thomas Jefferson
and John Adams met for the first time in 1775 and almost immediately developed a friendly liking toward each other. For the first two decades of their

of Judiciary Act of 1801 one year later, the friendship between him and John Adams was no longer. The dramatic friendship between Adams and
Jefferson took another turn in 1812 when they finally listened to patriot and physician Benjamin Rush to reconcile their relationship, which had been
suggested and encouraged by Rush for the past three years. Benjamin Rush also had a dream that Adams and Jefferson reconciled their friendship and
died almost at the same time.[10] First attempt to reconcile appeared in letters in 1813 when Jefferson looked back at French Revolution and admitted
that Adams had been right. In 1789, Adams had envisioned that the French Revolution would be a long–lasting and bloody war. He had also predicted
that the Great Britain would win the European supremacy over France. Both these predictions later came to be true. Jefferson's acknowledgment of
Adams' correct anticipation was unlike every bitter thing he had said about Adams before, which showed Jefferson's courage and honesty in trying to
understand Adams and restore their friendship.[11] In 14 years from 1812 to 1826, they exchanged 158 letters to one another.[12] Just like Benjamin

There is a distinct contrast in the freedom of speech rights of an employee of a private corporation and the freedom of speech rights of an employee
of the government. The Massachusetts Supreme Court opinion in the Korb case reminds us of the famous dictum of Oliver Wendell Holmes in an
1892 Massachusetts case that involved a policeman who was a member of a "political committee" and who solicited money for that committee. The
policeman was then discharged from the police department. The ex–policeman petitioned the court for restoration of his employment. The
Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled that the petitioner may have a constitutional right to talk politics, but he has no constitutional right to be a
policeman (Rbs2.com, 2000). There are few employments for hire in which the employee does not agree to suspend his constitutional rights of free
speech as well as of idleness by the implied terms of his contract. The employee cannot complain, because he freely accepts the employment on the
terms which are offered to him.

Encompassing a world view or set of beliefs, along with a value system and a way of life embodying and expressing these beliefs. They are not

Social Media Should Be Regulated Essay
SOCIAL MEDIA SHOULD BE REGULATED ABSTRACT As social media becomes a heavy influence in our online presence, certain elements need
to be policed, as laws can still be broken. This is an insight into if social media, more specifically social networking sites, can be regulated to avoid
recent spates of 'trolling' or whether it only serves to strip people of freedom to speech. INTRODUCTION Social media has now become a part of our
modern day society and has a huge impact on our lives on a daily basis. Social media is the use of web and mobile–based technology to support

However other social media platforms such as Formspring and Twitter allow users to remain anonymous, bar the IP addresses stored on their
servers. This allows users to hid behind their computers and say things that would be considered inappropriate and possibly illegal on a public stage,
in the real world. Trolling has taken on many forms in social media and with so many platforms to choose from, anyone with intent can use this to
their advantage. Twitter accounts have been used to make threats and harass celebrities, Joe McElderry being one of many victims. Ennis McBride,
with the sole intent of stalking Joe, made an anonymous twitter account to continue his harassment. [5] As technology has advanced, laws have been
introduced to protect society, for instance the interception and disclosure of messages as part of the wireless telegraphy act 2006, section 48[6]. So
why would you not regulate social media, a new technology phenomena with the potential to cause harm? We could agree that social media should be

In, 2001, the Internet censorship laws went to the ultimate extreme. If state secrets are exported from China, the government can impose harsh penalties
such as imprisonment and confiscation all belongings, and in extreme cases, the death penalty. In 2002, China banned those under the age of 18 from

heretic messages.
The Chinese government had enforced these rules and regulations through blocking, filtering and shutting down Internet cafes. According to Amnesty

Comparing Devlin to Mill.
A Comparative Analysis of Devlin and Mill
It can be assumed that if J.S. Mill and Lord Devlin ever coexisted some intoxicating deliberations regarding the role of morality in society would
transpire. However, time has a peculiar habit of erecting boundaries amid centuries, allowing us only to presume discourse between the contemporary
and the historical. Consequentially, each individual has an obligation to formulate his or her own appraisal established through the logistic unification
of the particular instant and one's own conception of idealistic righteousness. But the acquisition of an infallible and tangible philosophy with universal
application would be as obstinate to create as it would to fathom. In such regard, the apparatus on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover Devlin asserts that moral legislation is crucial to maintain a social bond. He maintains that society has a right to protect its own existence by
barring behavior that threatens that existence. This is distinctly divergent from Mill's perceptions on paternalism.
Mill claimed that there must be unconditional rejection of paternalism by the state, only invalidated to prevent persons from selling themselves into
slavery. Reinforcing his case Mill argued that paternalistic intervention is unlikely to work because an individual is acutely more aware of his or her
own needs than the state is. Additionally, he argued that it is improbable compulsion would work. This can also be taken into account in the form of
liberty. Mill alleges that an autonomous life has more value than a life of dependency, since one cannot be forced to be autonomous paternalism has a
damaging effect on an individual. As a contemporarily relevant issue, Devlin indirectly delivers his rebuttal to paternalism by embodying a stance on
homosexuality. He defends societies right to protect its own existence by vetoing behavior that threatens its sustainability, since homosexuality is
detrimental to society that union has a right to prohibit it. This is consistent with Devlin's definition of "tangible harm", described as a harm that
instigates a diminution of the physical strength of society. When practiced in trivial quantities these activities can be harmless, however as its

Essay on Proposed Revisions to the Army Tattoo Policy
Although tattoos represent a variety of things in a person's life, they don't necessarily dictate how well a person is able to perform their job. For the
last few months, there has been an ongoing debate about troops in the Army that have tattoos, and as a result their careers have been placed on the
line. With this upcoming change, it has been specifically said that troops cannot have tattoos that extend below their knees and above their elbows and
ones that reach above their neckline. Sgt. Maj. Raymond Chandler argues that tattoos cannot be racist, extremist, or sexist. If the tattoo violates that
then they will have to get it removed (Freedberg). While it is assumed that this is limited to new recruits, it will also be applied to the... Show more

At the time the Army gained a large number of troops, but what they failed to realize was that they enlisted more troops than they needed. This is
when the proposed revision to the grooming policy came up for discussion. With the new revisions tattoos won't be the only thing up for discussion;
hair, makeup, and piercings will be too (Dallet). In a recent article there was a discussion about an off duty troop who was unshaven, and had on torn
clothes who had a piercing. While he was out and about on the military base, he was seen by a few Airmen and who quickly labeled the Army as "The
Ghetto Service". This assumption gave the impression that the Army let anyone who wanted to enlist in. This relates back to the army tattoo policy,
because I feel that the Army is placing those that have tattoos in the same category as those Airmen. Chandler took that situation as an insult and this is
when he decided that it was time to fix this.
At this time the troops have the First Amendment to back them on this issue at hand. The amendment gives them the right to express their freedom of
speech. As I previously stated there wasn't a specific way that your speech had to be expressed. So it all boils down to the question if the army is
discriminating against their troops, or they just won't deal with tattoos. An example of a troop exercising his right was where Gunja talks about how

The American Dream
Introduction
The American dream is a term used in a lot of ways. However, it revolves around the thought that anyone living in the US can achieve something
coupled with the possibility of lead a happy and successful life. The dream has been an aim for the majority of the individuals who reside in the land
of America that gives them hope of the future. The definition of the term has expanded to incorporate freedom, achievement and meaningful
relationships.
People who manage to achieve their respective are deemed to have achieved the American dream. Part of the dream involves controlling one's own fate,
becoming successful, and having good living conditions. Example of this dream has included being in possession of things like television, automobiles,
supermarkets and having access to the Internet.
In this perspective, the American dream revolves around making better living conditions for individuals and their children. It's about having the chance
to achieve what elsewhere may have not been possible. The outline of the dream is different for each person. According to Paul Krugman; "America
looks more and more like a class–ridden society. And guess what? Our political leaders are doing everything they can to fortify class inequality, while
denouncing anyone who complains–or even points out what is happening–as a practitioner of class warfare." (Muller, 2011.p.465). The America Dream
is becoming a thing of the Past, the wealthy have more privileges than the poor.
From the birth of America, to America today, the driving force and the heart of America has always been the "American Dream." The "American
Dream" is a goal for the majority of people who live in the realms of the Americanized world. I believe that the "American Dream" is controlling my
own destiny, becoming successful, and living free. Examples of this dream are things like television, automobiles, supermarkets, malls, Internet, planes,
trains, etc. The "American Dream" is success, freedom, and being able to control your own destiny.
Becoming successful has been the dreams of many people of the past and present and I think that it is one the most important things that a person must
accomplish. Anyone and everyone can develop into a successful

The Intervention Of Biotechnology On Life Takes Two Forms...
The intervention of biotechnology in life takes two forms of therapy and enhancement. Andrew Lustig, author of the article Enhancement Technologies
and the Person: Christian Perspectives, defines both accordingly, saying that "therapy is generally defined as the prevention or cure of disease, or as the
restoration or approximation of return to normal physiological function. Enhancement is defined as the alteration of individual (or group)
characteristics, traits, and abilities (both health– and non–health–related) beyond a measurable baseline of normal function" (41). Therapy is focused on
restoration of our integrity while assisting natural physiology, whereas enhancement is focused on alteration of our physiology. For example, say a...

Deliberating further about the distinction between enhancements and therapy, the theological ethicist Richard Niebuhr outlines categories that describe
how Christians have related to the culture at various times in history with regards to his book Christ in Culture (Chesire 77). After examining each of
the five categories and contrasting them with Catholic moral theology and Catholic teaching, I believe the category "Christ against enhancement" is the
most accurate, which Niebuhr explains in that "the radical Christian regards culture as deeply corrupted by original sin. Within this perspective,
biomedical enhancements, being part of culture, work to transmit the destructive effects of sin and have the potential to magnify human depravity" (qtd.
in Chesire 77). Therefore, technology associated with bioenhancements that magnifies the corruption of human morality is part of that culture. I think
the "Christ against enhancement" is accurate to what the Church would believe because it is comprehensible with Catholic moral theology. Although,
the Church is accepting of therapy due to its purely medical purpose. In therapy, as Pope Benedict XVI put it in his pre–papacy Instruction on Respect
for Human Life, "applied biology and medicine work together for the integral good of human life [and] come to the aid of a person stricken by
illness...respect[ing] his or her dignity as a creature of God" (7). This distinction between what is

Censorship in Schools
There has recently been a renewed interest and passion in the issue of censorship. In the realm of the censorship of books in schools alone, several
hundred cases have surfaced each year for nearly the past decade. Controversies over which books to include in the high school English curriculum
present a clash of values between teachers, school systems, and parents over what is appropriate for and meaningful to students. It is important to
strike a balance between English that is meaningful to students by relating to their lives and representing diversity and satisfying worries about the
appropriateness of what is read. This burden often falls on teachers. The purpose of this research paper is to discuss ... Show more content on

Censorship can take different shapes depending on the public school system: Schools can give teachers a list of acceptable books to teach, just provide
guidelines, or leave it up to the teachers to judge which books are appropriate (Agee, 1999). Teachers are often very nervous about including texts
that are not traditional or specifically approved by the school, especially because of the highly publicized cases of teachers whose careers have been
ruined because of censorship debates in courts and school systems (Agee, 1999).
First Amendment Rights Relating to the Censorship of Books
Censorship cases often bring about debates over students' first amendment rights. Students' first amendment rights are important to preserve so that
students can not be excluded from meaningful works or literature. It is understandable for the government to design educational plans as a way to get
its voice into classrooms, but "the truth–promoting function of the First Amendment provides no reason, however, to question the right of students to
explore a variety of ideas and perspectives, and to form and express ideas of their own" (Brown, 1994, p. 30). Schools already place a restriction on
religious material or material addressing current political controversy (Brown, 1994).
Censors typically feel as though the subject material of controversial books in the high school English curriculum is too much for teenagers to handle

Freedom of the Press Versus Right to Privacy
Freedom of the press versus right to privacy
ByRobert Skidelsky (China Daily)
Privacy has become a big issue in contemporary jurisprudence. The "right to privacy" is enshrined in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights,
and guaranteed by Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights. But Article 8 is balanced by Article 10, which guarantees "free expression
of opinion". So what right has priority when they conflict?
Under what circumstances, for example, is it right to curtail press freedom in order to protect the right to privacy, or vice versa? The same balance is
being sought between the right of citizens to data privacy and government demands for access to personal information to fight crime, terrorism, and so

A law that curtails the abuse of press power while protecting its freedom to expose the abuse of political power would be difficult, but not impossible,
to frame. The essential principle is that the media should not be allowed to pander to the public 's prurience under cover of protecting the public interest.
What famous people – indeed ordinary people, too – do in private should be off limits to the media unless they give permission for those activities to
be reported, photographed, or filmed. The only exceptions would be if a newspaper has reasonable grounds for believing that the individuals
concerned are breaking the law, or that, even if they are not breaking the law, they are behaving in such a way as to render them unfit to perform the
duties expected of them.
Thus, a pop star 's consumption of illegal drugs may be reported, but not his or her sexual habits (if they are legal). The private life of a politician
may be revealed if it is expected to have consequences for the way the country is being governed; that of a top executive of a public company if it may
affect the returns to shareholders.
This should be the only "public interest" defense available to a media outlet that is sued for invasion of privacy. The media might become a bit
drearier, but public life would be far healthier.

Two of these issues, as they relate to higher education, that stand out the most include the issues of free speech and student safety. As we look at
where the mentality of students came from, we will be able to better understand issues facing higher education administration today as it related to
social media and its use on college and university campuses. When we look at social media, where did these issues stem from? Charles Gulas, Kim
McKeage, and Marc Weinberger, in their article It's Just a Joke, they discuss where the issues we see in social media with the way that people
portray themselves comes from (Gulas, McKeague, & Weinberger, 2010). They argue that the "It's just a joke" mentality stems from the portrayal
of negative stereotypes in the mass media that bleeds into the social media (Gulas, McKeague, & Weinberger, 2010). In the mass media and
advertising, violence is made humorous, for example in the article, they play out an ad for Progressive insurance where the female creates a voodoo
doll in the likeness of her "Cheatin' Boyfriend", she then inflicts pain on the boyfriend via the voodoo doll, and the world laughs (Gulas, McKeague,
& Weinberger, 2010). We see these ads with violence as humorous because we know that it is "just a joke", but at what point is it no longer a joke?
While this article focuses on violence towards men, there can be found examples of violence towards others as well that perpetuate the humor in
violence with the excuse that

To Speak or Not to Speak Essay
Learning is dynamic. It is kinetic in its growth, as humans begin to learn at their first breath and end with their final. Some things people learn are
small, like that a coworker loves a certain shade of blue; while other things can save lives, such as when a toddler learns not to put silverware in an
electrical socket. Yet, how are many lessons learned in life? Simply said, the answer is through speech. Whether by a mother's worried scolding or a
professor's educated explanation, being able to speak is the general way of spreading knowledge, and quite frankly why humans created language. With
this evident, the freedom of speech is irrefutably one of the most vital gifts given, especially during times of mental exploration like that ... Show more

Thus, this also means revenue loss for the college and programs within. If the school also forbids dating, such as in the first video, some people may
never realize that their special person was right there beside them the whole time and pass them by. Overall, any type of personal or educational growth
would be stunted tremendously.
Additionally, many required classes for a degree that stretch the mind of each student past its previous level will be ineffective if freedom of speech is
taken. For example, most degrees include a mandatory ethics class, one that challenges their typical viewpoints and forces them to observe the world
from the other side. Debates in this class must be free to contemplate all angles and reasoning in order for them to truly hold influence and spark the
minds of its participants. The events of these friendly debates would be impossible in a university that controls the speech of its students. Or what
about those in classes studying government? Students would learn about laws and the Constitution only to know that their first amendment rights are
being disregarded. What about those studying the Holocaust or African American history? Their textbooks would be moderated, and any who wanted
to look further into his or her topic could be punished unrightfully like Keith John Sampson was for his novel. The nation's universities must be fully
aware of the dilemmas that eliminating the freedom of speech would cause.

James Madison and Thomas Jefferson are two of the seven key founding fathers of the United States. The motive of the founders of the U.S. was to
establish religious freedom in the colonies; therefore, religion was of importance to them. When the policy of the separation of church and state was
enacted by the founding fathers through the Constitution, it meant that under a secular government, religious freedom would always be protected.
Issues such as the freedom to practice one's religion arose in the earlier colonies and the separation of church and states prevents these issues from

Not only did James Madison have views on the importance of religion but he was an adamant believer of the separation of church and state. Madison
stated that breaking the ties between church and state would cause a growth in religious interest. He wrote about this in 1819 stating that "the number,
the industry, and the morality of the priesthood and the devotion of the people have been manifestly increased by the total separation of the church
from the state." Thomas Jefferson shared this belief with Madison in his wall of separation between religion and government which is a fortification of
liberty. He strongly supported the freedom of religion in America through the separation of church and state. "The phrase wall of separation between
the church and the state was originally coined by Thomas Jefferson in a letter to the Danbury Baptists in 1802." The purpose of the letter was to ease
fears of the wall that the Danbury, Connecticut Baptists had. Jefferson said in his letter that the wall had been built to protect them. This was used to
keep the state out of the church's business. During pre–Revolutionary America there were efforts made to attain not only political liberty but also
religious freedom. The booming dissenting churches in Virginia had presented several pleas against religious discrimination to the Virginia House of

Persuasive Essay On Genetic Engineering
Genetic engineering is currently a growing field in which people are obsessing over. This is new and upcoming technology that combines genetic and
Nanotechnological enhancements, which completes the direct manipulation of DNA to alter an organism's characteristics in a particular way. In my
opinion, it may very well be a great improvement, but it should only be used when necessary. If I were a parent of a child under 12 years of age, I
would not sign up for the enhancement.
First of all, genetic engineering is simply a way of altering oneself. The enhancement may bring great skills to have, but unfortunately this is not only
changing the child's mind completely, it is also giving them no self–actualization ability. I agree with Baylis and Robert's idea of, "Enhancement
technologies having a deleterious impact on the genetic variability characteristic of the human gene pool" (Baylis and Robert) because every human is
different and unique in many aspects. This process literally weakens the authenticity of one's accomplishments and diversity throughout society. It
holds that the engineered person's abilities and talents are no longer his or her own, but are simply because of the alteration. Children are supposed to
be different in order to find their struggles and strengths, building themselves. If they are accelerated in everything possible, they will never find their
paths in life. According to Baylis and Robert, "The essence of humans is to nurture and protect the natural

Business Ethics : Corporate Social Responsibility Essay
Seydina M. Fall
E–Business Ethics
A corporation must try to avoid egregious negative externalities, must actively promote corporate social responsibility (CSR), and must engage in
philanthropy. Let's take the example of the mining industry, in which 75% of mining companies (diamonds, copper, uranium, cobalt, etc.) are listed on
the Toronto Stock Exchange1. For Canada, mining is a source of economic prosperity that brings along with it some risks. To maintain their
competitive advantage, it is crucial for Canadian firms involved in mining to invest in programs that bring about long term prosperity for Canada as
well as the populations in countries where the natural resources are extracted. One way that CSR is linked to competitive advantage is that it allows
firms to anticipate potential negative changes in the firm's external environment. For example, global capital markets adversely reacting to a Canadian
mining firm's exploitation of workers in the Congo, or increased pressure from sophisticated Non–Governmental Organizations using the media, or
boycott campaigns. In this paper, I will be arguing that CSR falls within the category of competitive strategy specifically smart risk management and
cost minimization. CSR helps create win–win situations that make good business sense. It is not an act of theft from shareholders. Instead, I believe
that CSR investments should be analyzed within the context of a firm's (or a country's) competitive strategy rather than business

Freedom from Religion: Perversion of the U.S....
In the two hundred and thirteen years since its ratification, the U.S. Constitution has been the very spine of America–the single–most effective element

spurred on by their own experiences in the perils of tyrannical oppression. Thus the preservation of America's sacred freedoms has been the result of a

Allegiance to anyone else would have been treason and grounds for execution. Therefore, socialist governments had no need for established religion
and thus the "wall of separation" can be viewed as all encompassing.
The preceding forms of autocracy display the two extremes of the government's relationship with the Church. Falling roughly in the middle of these is
the United States' form of government, a republic, in which elected representatives are entrusted with the power to make and enforce laws in
accordance with the Constitution. In addition to this most important document, a system of checks and balances has been set up to ensure that the
nation becomes neither monarchial, declaring a national faith, nor socialistic, abolishing all religious freedom. The constitutional provisions of the First
Amendment neutralize both extremes
Aware of the past injustices of monarchies–such as the Holy Inquisition of Spain, the tumultuous reign of Bloody Mary in England, and more recently,
the religious intolerance of King George III–the framers of the Constitution had good reason to advocate religious freedom as well as separation while
building this government. In Federalist Paper No. 69, Alexander Hamilton contrasted the religious handlings of a monarchy with the proposed republic.
He stated, "[The President of the United States] has no particle of spiritual jurisdiction; [while the monarchy] is the supreme head and governor of the

Mill's Principles in His Work On Liberty
John Stuart Mill was born in London in 1806, the son of the philosopher James Mill. James Mill was a close friend of Jeremy Bentham, the founder of
utilitarianism (the theory that states that the right course of action is the course which generates the most happiness). Bentham and James Mill
educated J. S. Mill rigorously, to such an extent that he began reading Ancient Greek at age 3. He was reading Plato's Dialogues at age 13– in their

So therefore the LP must be applied to everyone in a society for it to be legitimate.
The LP has many subsections which allow it to work; to just leave people free to do as they please does not make a society legitimate. In fact, this
would horrify Mill, because he is particularly worried about the tyranny of the majority, and in this society an irrational majority could easily exact a
tyranny upon the rational minority as there would be no safeguards or restraints. The LP is put into place to stop this happening. Mill is interested in
the restrictions that law is allowed to place on people, but he is also interested in the moral and social pressure that can be exerted by society upon
individuals. He doesn't want people to blindly follow custom.[1]
One of the sections of the LP is the harm principle (HP). This principle states that there are two kinds of acts that a person can do. The first kind are
self–regarding acts, which only affect the individual who is doing the self–regarding act, for example using drugs to get high alone in your house.[2]
The other kind are other–regarding acts, which affect other people, for example shooting someone in the face. A society is only legitimate when it
restricts other–regarding acts, and doesn't touch self–regarding acts, as these acts are part of the private sphere. There are problems with this however.

hopes to ease the pain of the dry reality that money has taken over one's happiness. The need to be financially stable has caused society to work in
professional positions that will never satisfy them, that leave them unhappy and unsatisfied. Do to the influence of money, society has chosen to
sacrifice happiness in hopes of the ability to obtaining the American Dream. People work at jobs they hate to earn an income that will only chase the
ever elusive American Dream illusion. Society today has made the American Dream an illusion driven by a monetary success. It has made the
American standard for everyone to make it big become rich without doing very little work. Although that one could dream of success, not everyone can
be rich and famous; hard work does not guarantee their success, little work does guarantee their successful either. Successful are no more honorable

A goal that should require one to work hard, it should not require one to overwork themselves through the week and never get to see their families. A
great education for every child, not an education that leaves no time for them to enjoy their childhood. College costs are raising faster than the inflation
rate, with student loan debt exploding. Saving rates are low; unemployment rates are high. Many cannot escape poverty, are the types of values and

Censorship Research Paper
War on Censorship After being assigned a school project, a young high school student walks into the library with plans on researching about his topic
before starting. It's a biology project about the mating rituals of animals, which was a topic that struck his interest. So he boots up the computer, signs
in, and starts surfing the web and different search engines for his topic. Every site he clicks on, however, has been blocked. Anything having to do with
mating and breeding has been censored by the library as inappropriate material. What if this high school student doesn't have internet at home? Being
unable to look up his material at the library is sure to hinder his research. This would be a very common story if web censorship in the ... Show more

Many protested because it violated the freedom of speech of the adults online and it was rejected by the Supreme Court in 1997 since it was a
restriction on the First Amendment (Gottfried). And there's always the issue of what should be filtered and what shouldn't. What one considers lewd or
hateful material, another might laugh at. The definition of inappropriate varies from person to person, community to community, meaning there's no
national meaning to the word that applies to everyone. Is it fair to block something because a few people find it insulting? In Hillsborough High
School, this very issue was brought up only it was over the school newspaper not the internet. The principal of the school pulled an article from the
newspaper detailing the school's achievement gap over the years strictly because it might harm the students' self–esteem (Stein). Was that material
appropriate to block just because a few students would find the information hurtful? Censorship is all based on opinions that not everyone might have
so it isn't fair to block everything for the fear of insulting a few. There are, however, some bad things on the internet that aren't only dangerous for
minors, but for everyone else as well. With the rise of the internet has come the rise of violent hate crimes. With the web being as vast as it is, it's no
surprise that there are sites depicting hateful messages and calls to action against

The Impact of Puritans on the Development of America and its influence on modern society
The Puritans came to America in search of greater freedom for religious liberty. They felt unable to worship and practice their theological perspectives
as long as they were under the umbrella of the Church of England. The puritans views with the Church of England began differ greatly and they felt
they could no longer be under their control. The Puritans decided that they needed to break free from the Church of England and find a place where
they could practice their religion without persecution or interference. The new world in the American colonies provided a great opportunity for the
Puritans to branch out and form their own communities with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They believed that the Church of England was moving toward the same doctrine as the Catholic Church and they refused to be associated with that
type of teaching. They believed the Church of England worshipped idols and prayed to many gods, for example the Catholic Church praying to the
Saints. The Puritans broke away from the Church of England for these reasons and wanted a world where there was one true God according to their
religion. The new world in America offered the Puritans this opportunity to be free from the Church of England and form their own communities
according to the way they viewed Christianity. The Puritan term comes from the belief that one should remain pure in body and in thought to God. It
was very important for them to live a life of strict order and obedience to God and His Word in order to gain eternal life. The Puritans arrived in New
England and started to set up communities to practice their religion. "The Puritans had no sooner landed in the New World than they began coercively
to "purify" their surroundings" ( Rothbard, 1999) They purified their surroundings by purging everyone who was not a Christian by setting up
communities that elusively Christian and ruled with a theocratic mindset.

My Freedom: A Fictional Narrative Essay
The entire town was gathered in front of our town hall surrounding the raised wooden platform that had one long wooden pole, where three ropes
hung above each rebel. I watched from the sidelines next to my father, the Lieutenant General, searching for the familiar face I have come to know so
well, my Daemon. It was six months ago when I was taken from the shelter of my home. "Mary! Mary!" I hear my longtime friend, Katherine, getting
closer to the door. "Katherine, what are you yelling about? You need to be quiet, Matt and Joseph are sleeping and what are you–." She doesn't answer
me just frantically pulls on the long sleeve of the prairie dress women are required to wear. "Please you must hurry, I found an injured man in the forest

Anger and panic swirls in the pit of my stomach, I start to bang against the wooden door, "Hello! Is anyone there! Let me out!" I don't know how
long I bang and yell, it feels like ages, I don't stop until my voice is hoarse and my hands throbbing like my head. "Please." I whimper stumbling
back and falling to my knees clasping my hands above me my cross gripped tightly in my hands leaving an imprint in my hands. I begin to recite
verses of the bible, praying for the Lord to free me from my prison. I hear the creak of the door opening, though I keep reciting the verses, my anger
grows at the mysterious figure who took me from my home. "I thought you Christian girls were supposed to not make a sound unless told to do
so." A gravelly voice pulls me out of my prayers; the grip on my cross slackens until it falls landing on the floor with a clang as I realization stops
me cold. "Noah?" I breathe out as I look upon the man I once thought was dead. 'He hasn't changed in the three years I last saw him. Still believes
himself to be the rebel.' I note looking at the stubborn set of his defined jaw. "I was told you were dead, killed by a Muslim bombing." I stand up
from my kneeling position, waiting on Noah to disappear in front of me. His jaw tightens "no that was a lie," he growls eyes sparking with irritation,
"and the name given to me by your people is Daemon." "Daemon? What are you talking about? That's the name of

Censorship's Wide-Reaching Impact

  • 1. Censorship Of A Wide Range Of Books From fiction to nonfiction, from romance to horror, from children's to adults, and from classics to newcomers, censorship of a wide range of books is becoming more popular. Many forget how much influence a person can receive through the words in a book or the pictures throughout a story. The issue of "morally destructive and offensive literature" has become a common concern among people worldwide. However, the banning of certain books can be looked at in two completely different ways: protecting the precious minds of humankind, young or old, or forbidding those minds from reading the particular topics that were put in place to be learned. Regardless of the content inside of them, books are the greatest teachers in the world. Why... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, just because people do not agree with each other or with what is being said, that is not a reason to take it all away. Taking away books based on their content provides this idea that people are wrong in expressing their ideas and that they do not have a right to speak their mind and show their individuality. Parents, educators, librarians, and the government would beg to differ because they believe some books can be "harmful" to the mind. These "poisonous" factors would include racism, profanity, sex, violence, religion and so many other themes. Not all people are affected and challenging these themes, so it is not fair to take them away just because some people do not approve. It is important for the mind to learn about these topics because the world is not filled with all positives. Being aware of the negatives in the world and learning lessons from them is quite important to those young and old. Prohibiting books from people will not do them any good; let them self–censor and choose what they like and do not like to explore instead of taking away their privileges all together. Although many would say that a book serves as the greatest teacher a person could have, many do not realize how great of a best friend that a book could essentially be. Books act as an outlet and safe haven for many people based on how they relate to the content it contains. Readers often understand the message behind a story or the characters in that story by comparing what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Importance Education Has on Life Essay Education has tremendous effects that can determine how nice a person's life will be and the job that he will receive. It can decide what one will do for the rest of his life, and it can determine how one will live our life. Good education does not come easy though. One must go through struggles in order to obtain it. People spend years to get the degree that they want. Douglass's struggles were much worse than the struggles we endure today. The fact that Douglass was a slave greatly hurt his chances of acquiring an education. Since he was a slave, it was illegal and dangerous for people to teach him how to read and write because they could get in trouble with the law. Slaveholders and masters feared educated slaves. An educated slave... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Douglass wanted to be able to read and write so he could write about his life as a slave and his escape from slavery to freedom. Douglass became a great speaker and writer. He wanted to open the eyes of the nation to the cruelty of slavery. Douglass became an avid abolitionist and got arrested later on in his life for speaking against slavery. Richard LaGravenese's movie freedom writers displayed some of the modern hardships students go through to receive an education. The most prevalent hardship that is seen today is racial intolerance. Students today do not know how to tolerate other races and are not willing to tolerate other races. Mrs. Gruwell intended to teach her students how to tolerate and accept different races She taught them that appearance does not make one person better than the other person. High school students are caught up in the popularity hype. In the movie, the way to gain popularity and respect is to fight people from other races. They think that they gain a lot from beating someone up. Unfortunately, not many people will stand up for what is right because they do not want to get ridiculed. In order to make a change you have to be willing to stick out. Mrs. Gruwell was willing to stand out for her cause so she could make a change and to fix the problem. She was persistent. No matter the ridicule that she received, she kept on doing what was right. Many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay on Censorship in Schools is not Justifiable Censorship in School is Not Justifiable Walt Whitman once said, "The dirtiest book of all is the expurgated book." Between the years 2000 and 2009 a total of 3200 books were challenged in school libraries in an attempt to expurgate, or censor, the content in books provided to students. Today the trend of censorship continues as popular novels such as The Hunger Games, The Fault in Our Stars, and Captain Underpants are censored from schools across the nation (Challenges by Reason).Censorship in regards to literature refers to the examination and suppressing of a book because of objectionable material. The process of censorship in school libraries often begins with an outspoken parent, teacher, student, or administrator and ends in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Heinrich Heine states, "Wherever they burn books they will also, in the end, burn human beings." Restricting the discussion of new and controversial ideas rather than tolerating and acknowledging the presence of new and controversial ideas is causing more pain than it is worth in the school setting. The idea of censoring reality from school libraries is unreasoned, yet that is exactly what pro–censorship individuals advocate. The discussion and knowledge of new, controversial, and necessary ideas among students is restricted due to censorship. Censorship in school libraries allows teachers, administrators, peers and their parents to decide what a student may or may not read based on their opinion. Opinion is variable between different groups of people within the school; therefore, a single person or a small group of people cannot be trusted to make decisions on the behalf of a larger group. Kekla Magoon argues, "That no one person can be trusted to censor material, individuals can choose to be exposed to." Expurgation, banning, and abridgement of books are not allowing students to learn how to guard themselves from topics they do not personally believe in. Students would benefit much more if they practiced self–censorship rather than depending on adults to make decisions for them. A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although Haroun and the sea of stories is a children's literature, symbols which overlap as archetypes are used to make this novel contain a deeper meaning and be just as enjoyable for adults. Weather in this story symbolizes the current feeling or emotion of the characters. Dull, gloomy days often occurred when the character is depressed: "this sudden mist positively stank of sadness and gloom" (47). This symbol is clearly evident when Haroun traveled to Moody land, "the sun would shine all night is there were enough joyful people around, and it would go on shining until the endless sunshine got on their nerves; then an irritable night would fall a night full of mutterings and discontent, ... The government attempted to stop the media from exposing this event to the public; they also attempted to wipe out any written records of this afterwards. This is similar to how certain Chupwalas in Haroun stitched their mouths, or vowed to remain silent under the orders of Khattam Shud who tried to stop the relay of information in his "kingdom" so to speak. 3. Detail 3 instances in the text where the power of story is alluded to. Explain The power of story is often referred to in this novel. For example, on page 72, "the stories were held here in fluid form, they retained the ability to change, to become new versions of themselves, to join up with other stories and so become yet other stories...It was not dead but alive." This means that there are many variations to one idea or one story. Old tales combined with imagination can be made into new pieces of work. "no story comes from nowhere; new stories are born from old––it is the new combinations that make them new."(86) There is an endless possibility and no limitations on what the story is about because new ones can always be made. Whether it's the adventure or the escape from reality that stories provide, or that fact that it takes your mind away from tension, some people, and personally I believe that stories have the ability to relieve stress. The power of story is implied in Haroun: "you can offer [Story

Censorship plays a vital role in maintaining the morals of its society and creating an economically dynamic, socially cohesive and culturally vibrant nation. (N.A, N.D) The press exert a significant influence on the public and is partly responsible for the views and values that many hold. Hence, it should be responsible with what it put forth to the public. Singapore has gradually moved from film censorship to film classification and now to the focus on media literacy. Media Authority of Singapore (MDA) plays a significant role in regulating and conducting matters pertaining to the media. It is guided by legislation/acts such as Media Development Authority of Singapore Act, code of practice and guideline to comply and enforce the entities. In this term paper, we will discuss how the media handle censorship and classification related matters as well as reviewing the Films Appeal Committee under the films act policy. In this regard, recommendations will also be given on how to improve the clause. The media environment has undergone major changes, driven largely by the forces of technology, media convergence and globalisation. (Media Development Authority, 2014) As ... Sometimes people were not allowed to question what they were taught, and if they did so they were punished accordingly. Before 1700 some colonies had more religious freedom then others. While others colonies only allowed religious freedom to a select group, others allowed religious freedom to all different kinds of religions. Not all of the colonies were like this. For example, in (1629) non–separatists Puritans left from England and started a new colony called the Massachusetts Bay Colony. People who did not agree with their views were often banished. Anne Hutchinson was one of these people who were banished. She was banished because she argued against the Puritan belief of predestination. She had a trial and from there was forced out of the colony. Another person that was kicked out of the colony was a man named Roger Williams. • 10. The Growth Of American Individuality The Growth of American Individuality in Relation to Self–Expression Religion is an imperfect savior. Primitive civilizations depended on religion to explain the workings of the world; they depended on gods to protect their crops and homes from disease, drought, and other disasters far out of human control. While this dependency provided comfort, it sacrificed individuality. Recent years has seen the rise of alternative forms of media: novels, digital music, movies. These were not available to previous civilizations. Early Americans only had access to the Bible, which was unreadable to the average illiterate. Newer forms of media have spurned a nation–wide reflection on the old traditions that were largely set by religion. Ever since the founding of the colonies, and ever since more diverse forms of self–expression have become more accessible, Americans have grown in individuality as they have become less dependent on religion. The Puritans were the first of the Europeans to settle in the Americas. While their traditions have left a profound mark on American culture, their strict ways are rather peculiar. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller critiques Puritan society as close–minded and obsessed about maintaining conformity. "The parochial snobbery of these people was partly responsible for their failure to convert the Indians. Probably they also preferred to take land from heathens rather than from fellow Christians" (140). The Puritans revolved their culture around religion, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. An Article For The American Journal Of Bioethics There are individuals in our societies, though, who believe that the dignity of life and human nature are not important in the debate of bioethics and enhancements. Fabrice Jotterand, who wrote an article for the American Journal of Bioethics, discussed in his article that bioenhancements do not corrupt the rational and moral structure of human personhood using the definition of dignity of German philosopher Immanuel Kant, which is that "persons have [an] 'intrinsic worth' or dignity derived from the rational and moral structure of human personhood" (qtd. in Jotterand 46). If anything, Jotterand states, enhancements would improve the rational mind instead of dehumanizing it; augmenting human dignity and respecting life because enhancements are meant to transcend our "biological nature" beyond its human limits and capabilities (46, 48). However, a flaw in Jotterand's argument is that it entails both the respect for human life and the equality of humans, which should guide biotechnology together (46). The Church declares that in attempting to transcend life, one would break the bonds of our human nature and biology, thus interrupting in the communion of life shared among horizontal, human relationships and the vertical relationship between humanity and God. Contrary to Jotterand's beliefs, this communion of life would be set apart instead of equal, with discrimination of those with or without enhancements due to finances, location, or other factors. The dramatic friendship between Adams and Jefferson took another turn in 1812 when they finally listened to patriot and physician Benjamin Rush to reconcile their relationship, which had been suggested and encouraged by Rush for the past three years. Benjamin Rush also had a dream that Adams and Jefferson reconciled their friendship and died almost at the same time.[10] First attempt to reconcile appeared in letters in 1813 when Jefferson looked back at French Revolution and admitted that Adams had been right. In 1789, Adams had envisioned that the French Revolution would be a long–lasting and bloody war. He had also predicted that the Great Britain would win the European supremacy over France. Reinforcing his case Mill argued that paternalistic intervention is unlikely to work because an individual is acutely more aware of his or her own needs than the state is. In a recent article there was a discussion about an off duty troop who was unshaven, and had on torn clothes who had a piercing. While he was out and about on the military base, he was seen by a few Airmen and who quickly labeled the Army as "The Ghetto Service". This assumption gave the impression that the Army let anyone who wanted to enlist in. • 26. The Intervention Of Biotechnology On Life Takes Two Forms... The intervention of biotechnology in life takes two forms of therapy and enhancement. Andrew Lustig, author of the article Enhancement Technologies and the Person: Christian Perspectives, defines both accordingly, saying that "therapy is generally defined as the prevention or cure of disease, or as the restoration or approximation of return to normal physiological function. Enhancement is defined as the alteration of individual (or group) characteristics, traits, and abilities (both health– and non–health–related) beyond a measurable baseline of normal function" (41). Therapy is focused on restoration of our integrity while assisting natural physiology, whereas enhancement is focused on alteration of our physiology. For example, say a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Deliberating further about the distinction between enhancements and therapy, the theological ethicist Richard Niebuhr outlines categories that describe how Christians have related to the culture at various times in history with regards to his book Christ in Culture (Chesire 77). After examining each of the five categories and contrasting them with Catholic moral theology and Catholic teaching, I believe the category "Christ against enhancement" is the most accurate, which Niebuhr explains in that "the radical Christian regards culture as deeply corrupted by original sin. Within this perspective, biomedical enhancements, being part of culture, work to transmit the destructive effects of sin and have the potential to magnify human depravity" (qtd. in Chesire 77). Therefore, technology associated with bioenhancements that magnifies the corruption of human morality is part of that culture. I think the "Christ against enhancement" is accurate to what the Church would believe because it is comprehensible with Catholic moral theology. Although, the Church is accepting of therapy due to its purely medical purpose. In therapy, as Pope Benedict XVI put it in his pre–papacy Instruction on Respect for Human Life, "applied biology and medicine work together for the integral good of human life [and] come to the aid of a person stricken by illness...respect[ing] his or her dignity as a creature of God" (7). • 27. Censorship in Schools Essay Censorship in Schools There has recently been a renewed interest and passion in the issue of censorship. In the realm of the censorship of books in schools alone, several hundred cases have surfaced each year for nearly the past decade. Controversies over which books to include in the high school English curriculum present a clash of values between teachers, school systems, and parents over what is appropriate for and meaningful to students. It is important to strike a balance between English that is meaningful to students by relating to their lives and representing diversity and satisfying worries about the appropriateness of what is read. This burden often falls on teachers. The purpose of this research paper is to discuss ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Censorship can take different shapes depending on the public school system: Schools can give teachers a list of acceptable books to teach, just provide guidelines, or leave it up to the teachers to judge which books are appropriate (Agee, 1999). Teachers are often very nervous about including texts that are not traditional or specifically approved by the school, especially because of the highly publicized cases of teachers whose careers have been ruined because of censorship debates in courts and school systems (Agee, 1999). First Amendment Rights Relating to the Censorship of Books Censorship cases often bring about debates over students' first amendment rights. Students' first amendment rights are important to preserve so that students can not be excluded from meaningful works or literature. It is understandable for the government to design educational plans as a way to get its voice into classrooms, but "the truth–promoting function of the First Amendment provides no reason, however, to question the right of students to explore a variety of ideas and perspectives, and to form and express ideas of their own" (Brown, 1994, p. 30). Schools already place a restriction on religious material or material addressing current political controversy (Brown, 1994). Censors typically feel as though the subject material of controversial books in the high school English curriculum is too much for teenagers to handle (Shen, 2002). ... • 28. Freedom of the Press Versus Right to Privacy Freedom of the press versus right to privacy ByRobert Skidelsky (China Daily) Privacy has become a big issue in contemporary jurisprudence. The "right to privacy" is enshrined in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, and guaranteed by Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights. But Article 8 is balanced by Article 10, which guarantees "free expression of opinion". So what right has priority when they conflict? Under what circumstances, for example, is it right to curtail press freedom in order to protect the right to privacy, or vice versa? The same balance is being sought between the right of citizens to data privacy and government demands for access to personal information to fight crime, terrorism, and so on. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A law that curtails the abuse of press power while protecting its freedom to expose the abuse of political power would be difficult, but not impossible, to frame. The essential principle is that the media should not be allowed to pander to the public 's prurience under cover of protecting the public interest. What famous people – indeed ordinary people, too – do in private should be off limits to the media unless they give permission for those activities to be reported, photographed, or filmed. The only exceptions would be if a newspaper has reasonable grounds for believing that the individuals concerned are breaking the law, or that, even if they are not breaking the law, they are behaving in such a way as to render them unfit to perform the duties expected of them. Thus, a pop star 's consumption of illegal drugs may be reported, but not his or her sexual habits (if they are legal). The private life of a politician may be revealed if it is expected to have consequences for the way the country is being governed; that of a top executive of a public company if it may affect the returns to shareholders. This should be the only "public interest" defense available to a media outlet that is sued for invasion of privacy. The media might become a bit drearier, but public life would be far healthier. There was MySpace and Facebook, and if you did not have one or the other, you needed to take a look at your life and your choices. MySpace and Facebook became a way to fit in. It began to change the way we think about friendships and communication. When we look at social media, where did these issues stem from? Charles Gulas, Kim McKeage, and Marc Weinberger, in their article It's Just a Joke, they discuss where the issues we see in social media with the way that people portray themselves comes from (Gulas, McKeague, & Weinberger, 2010). They argue that the "It's just a joke" mentality stems from the portrayal of negative stereotypes in the mass media that bleeds into the social media (Gulas, McKeague, & Weinberger, 2010). In the mass media and advertising, violence is made humorous, for example in the article, they play out an ad for Progressive insurance where the female creates a voodoo doll in the likeness of her "Cheatin' Boyfriend", she then inflicts pain on the boyfriend via the voodoo doll, and the world laughs (Gulas, McKeague, & Weinberger, 2010). Some things people learn are small, like that a coworker loves a certain shade of blue; while other things can save lives, such as when a toddler learns not to put silverware in an electrical socket. Yet, how are many lessons learned in life? Simply said, the answer is through speech. Whether by a mother's worried scolding or a professor's educated explanation, being able to speak is the general way of spreading knowledge, and quite frankly why humans created language. Debates in this class must be free to contemplate all angles and reasoning in order for them to truly hold influence and spark the minds of its participants. The events of these friendly debates would be impossible in a university that controls the speech of its students. Or what about those in classes studying government? Students would learn about laws and the Constitution only to know that their first amendment rights are being disregarded. What about those studying the Holocaust or African American history? The motive of the founders of the U.S. was to establish religious freedom in the colonies; therefore, religion was of importance to them. When the policy of the separation of church and state was enacted by the founding fathers through the Constitution, it meant that under a secular government, religious freedom would always be protected. Not only did James Madison have views on the importance of religion but he was an adamant believer of the separation of church and state. Madison stated that breaking the ties between church and state would cause a growth in religious interest. He wrote about this in 1819 stating that "the number, the industry, and the morality of the priesthood and the devotion of the people have been manifestly increased by the total separation of the church from the state." Thomas Jefferson shared this belief with Madison in his wall of separation between religion and government which is a fortification of liberty. He strongly supported the freedom of religion in America through the separation of church and state. "The phrase wall of separation between the church and the state was originally coined by Thomas Jefferson in a letter to the Danbury Baptists in 1802." The purpose of the letter was to ease fears of the wall that the Danbury, Connecticut Baptists had. Jefferson said in his letter that the wall had been built to protect them. This was used to keep the state out of the church's business. During pre–Revolutionary America there were efforts made to attain not only political liberty but also religious freedom. This is new and upcoming technology that combines genetic and Nanotechnological enhancements, which completes the direct manipulation of DNA to alter an organism's characteristics in a particular way. In my opinion, it may very well be a great improvement, but it should only be used when necessary. If I were a parent of a child under 12 years of age, I would not sign up for the enhancement. First of all, genetic engineering is simply a way of altering oneself. The enhancement may bring great skills to have, but unfortunately this is not only changing the child's mind completely, it is also giving them no self–actualization ability. I agree with Baylis and Robert's idea of, "Enhancement technologies having a deleterious impact on the genetic variability characteristic of the human gene pool" (Baylis and Robert) because every human is different and unique in many aspects. This process literally weakens the authenticity of one's accomplishments and diversity throughout society. It holds that the engineered person's abilities and talents are no longer his or her own, but are simply because of the alteration. Children are supposed to be different in order to find their struggles and strengths, building themselves. If they are accelerated in everything possible, they will never find their paths in life. Fall E–Business Ethics A corporation must try to avoid egregious negative externalities, must actively promote corporate social responsibility (CSR), and must engage in philanthropy. Let's take the example of the mining industry, in which 75% of mining companies (diamonds, copper, uranium, cobalt, etc.) are listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange1. For Canada, mining is a source of economic prosperity that brings along with it some risks. To maintain their competitive advantage, it is crucial for Canadian firms involved in mining to invest in programs that bring about long term prosperity for Canada as well as the populations in countries where the natural resources are extracted. One way that CSR is linked to competitive advantage is that it allows firms to anticipate potential negative changes in the firm's external environment. For example, global capital markets adversely reacting to a Canadian mining firm's exploitation of workers in the Congo, or increased pressure from sophisticated Non–Governmental Organizations using the media, or boycott campaigns. In this paper, I will be arguing that CSR falls within the category of competitive strategy specifically smart risk management and cost minimization. CSR helps create win–win situations that make good business sense. It is not an act of theft from shareholders. Thus the preservation of America's sacred freedoms has been the result of a strict adherence to the forefathers' insights. The preceding forms of autocracy display the two extremes of the government's relationship with the Church. Falling roughly in the middle of these is the United States' form of government, a republic, in which elected representatives are entrusted with the power to make and enforce laws in accordance with the Constitution. In addition to this most important document, a system of checks and balances has been set up to ensure that the nation becomes neither monarchial, declaring a national faith, nor socialistic, abolishing all religious freedom. The constitutional provisions of the First Amendment neutralize both extremes Aware of the past injustices of monarchies–such as the Holy Inquisition of Spain, the tumultuous reign of Bloody Mary in England, and more recently, the religious intolerance of King George III–the framers of the Constitution had good reason to advocate religious freedom as well as separation while building this government. The LP has many subsections which allow it to work; to just leave people free to do as they please does not make a society legitimate. The LP is put into place to stop this happening. Mill is interested in the restrictions that law is allowed to place on people, but he is also interested in the moral and social pressure that can be exerted by society upon individuals. He doesn't want people to blindly follow custom.[1] One of the sections of the LP is the harm principle (HP). This principle states that there are two kinds of acts that a person can do. The first kind are self–regarding acts, which only affect the individual who is doing the self–regarding act, for example using drugs to get high alone in your house.[2] The other kind are other–regarding acts, which affect other people, for example shooting someone in the face.
