FAQs for Students
1. Frequently
Asked
Questions
Next
year
may
be
offering
you
a
new
and
exciting
choice
on
how
you
can
learn
at
MSS.
The
Mentored
Self-‐Paced
Learning
(MSL)
program
will
give
you
the
flexibility
and
the
choices
of
how,
when
and
where
you
learn.
What
is
Flex
Time?
During
the
Flex
Time
period
you
will
be
working
more
independently
in
work
areas,
not
in
a
teacher-‐directed
class.
You
will
complete
your
course
work
in
the
form
of
Units
or
Learning
Guides.
Also,
you
will
have
a
choice
of
what
subject
area
you
want
to
work,
like
the
Science
pod,
Math
pod,
English
pod,
Tech.
areas,
Arts
pod,
etc.
Other
ways
you
may
learn
could
be:
Group
Work
/
ISU
Completion
/
Presentation
Preparation
/
Modular
Work
/
Computer
Access
Time
/
Labs
What
is
a
Learning
Guide
or
Unit?
Learning
Guides
and
Units
are
interchangeable.
Each
course
you
take
will
have
18
units
with
Learning
Guides.
The
18th
being
your
final
evaluation.
Each
Unit
will
take
5
periods
and
will
have
tasks
to
complete.
Some
of
the
tasks
may
include:
assignments,
projects,
practical
work,
labs,
ISU’s,
and
group
work.
At
the
end
of
the
units
you
will
have
a
unit
completion
evaluation
and
this
may
be
a
test,
written
assignment,
project
or
a
lab.
What
is
TA
time?
TA
stands
for
Teacher
Advisor.
For
the
first
20
minutes
of
each
day
you
will
meet
like
a
regular
homeroom.
During
this
time
you
and
your
TA
will
plan
your
Flex
Time
for
that
day.
You
will
also
get
your
announcements
and
check
in
for
attendance.
How
is
Self-‐Paced
different
than
regular
school?
You
still
have
all
the
benefits
of
regular
school
like
lessons
and
conferences
with
your
classroom
teacher.
But
with
the
Self-‐Paced
program
you
progress
through
the
18
units
and
you
can
work
at
your
own
speed.
At
the
end
of
each
unit
you
have
a
completion
task
(i.e.
test
or
project).
You
also
write
your
tests
when
you
are
ready.
There
are
target
dates,
not
due
dates
for
you
units.
Also:
• You
are
able
to
accelerate
though
material
you
understand
well
• You
are
able
to
spend
more
time
on
material
that
may
be
challenging
• You
negotiate
timelines
with
your
teachers
• You
can
carry
over
an
unfinished
course
into
the
next
semester

by
