Duel A fight challenge and one opponent must die
Heraldic crest A symbol to show identity of a knight in battlefield
Introduction
• Medieval England
was ruled by
warrior class of
knights. These
were heavily
armed fighters on
horseback
• The number of
knights in England
reached up to
6000 at his service
How to become a knight?
• At 7 y/o – boys from
noble family were
sent to live with their
uncles of close friend
and serve as a page
(servant)
• And during this
service, they would
be given such as
horse riding, swords
fighting and courtly
manners’
How to become a knight?
• At the age of 14, the page
then would become a squire
(a personal servant to a
knight)
• They will follow knight into
battles and performed
essential task as preparing
food, readying his horse and
helping him to put up his
armour
• In return, they will be given
training involving physical
exercise like swords fighting,
weightlifting, wrestling,
acrobatic and learning
chivalric behaviour.
How to become a knight?
• Chivalric behaviour
include : talking
politely to a noble
lady or dining at a
feast
• If all the trainings
were done
successfully, they
could become a knight
at the age of 21
Dubbed ceremony
• The dubbed
ceremony will take
place where they
will kneel in front
of their lord with
swords tapped on
their shoulder
Dubbed ceremony
• In other way,
dubbed ceremony
were done by
taking a bath to
wash away their
sins , they then
covered in purple
cloak (symbolize
blood/noble)
,black stockings
(symbolize death)
and white bealt
(symbolize purity)
Code of Chivalry
• A courtly manners for
every knight means
“horseman” in french
• Knights would have to
swear an oath of
chivalry to be brave,
truthful, godly, gentle,
faithful and fearless
and to defend honor
of a woman
• One act of chivalry is
to have challenge in a
duel who have
offended your honour
Armour and fighting
• Good n
strong
armours are
important to
keep them
alive
• It would take
up to 1 hour
to put on
their armour
before battle
Heraldic crest
• Is to identify a
knight in a full
suit on a
battlefield
• Its decorated
with colourful
surcoat which
also can be
found on their
horse and shield
• Different
decorations
means different
ranks , this
system is called
‘heraldry’
