The Quest of the Golden Fleece ,[object Object]
First hero in Europe to undertake a great journey
Supposed to have lived a generation before the hero of the Odyssey.
It was a journey taken by water, as rivers, lakes, and seas were the only highways.
Origin of the Golden Fleece ,[object Object]
Before it could be done a golden ram came and bore him away through the air.
He arrived in Colchis, where the king allowed him to marry his daughter.
Phrixus sacrificed the ram to Zeus, and gave its fleece to the king.
Pelias ,[object Object]
He had been told to beware a man wearing only one sandal.
When the man came he turned out to be Jason, and demanded his kingdom back.
Pelias tells him he could have it, but only if he brings back the golden fleece, and Jason agrees.
The Argonauts ,[object Object]
These included Hercules, Orpheus, Castor and Pollux, and Peleus, along with many others.
Lemnos ,[object Object]
Inhabited only by women who had risen up and killed all the men that lived there.
Still, the welcomed Jason and his men warmly, and gave them gifts before they sailed away.

  • 20. Hercules looked for him madly, and went farther and farther away from the sea until the Argonauts were forced to abandon him.

  • 23. Before the Argonauts could destroy the creatures, Iris came and stopped them. Still, she swore that the Hapies would never bother the man again.
  • 24. In gratitude, the man told Jason how to safely get past his next trials.

  • 26. Two great rocks that struck against each other, and anything in between.
  • 27. Sent a dove through first, which made it out the other side.
  • 28. The ship made it so closely that the rocks tore off the extreme end of the stern ornament.
  • 29.
  • 30. Before the Argonauts could land a favorable wind came, and they continued past the island.
  • 31. That same day the finally arrived at Colchis, where the golden fleece was.
  • 32.
  • 33. Aphrodite sent Cupid to make the Colchian king's daughter, who knew of powerful magic, fall in love with Jason.
  • 34. When Jason met with the king Cupid shot his daughter, Medea, and she fell in love with Jason.
  • 35.
  • 36. He decided to give him an impossible task that he believed would kill him.
  • 37.
  • 38. Then he must plant dragon's teeth, and fight the men that would come out of the ground.
  • 39. Medea helped him by giving him an ointment that would make him invincible for a day, and by telling him to throw a stone into the dragon-teeth men to make them frenzy and kill each other.
  • 40. Jason now completed the task easily, and that night Medea went to help him get the Fleece.
  • 41.
  • 42. She charmed the serpent that guarded it to sleep.
  • 43. Jason quickly took the Golden Fleece, and together they sped back to the ship and set sail for Greece.

  • 45. Medea killed him, and the Argonauts were free to sail for home.
  • 46.
  • 47. Hera sent the sea nymphs to guide them to safety.
  • 48. While passing Crete they were attacked by Talus, who was the last of the ancient bronze race.
  • 49. As Talus raised a pointed rock to throw at the ship, he grazed his ankle and bled to death.
  • 50.
  • 51. Medea help him gain revenge by tricking Pelias's daughters into cutting him to bits, believing that Medea would make him young again.
  • 52.
  • 53. Despite this, Jason engaged himself to a daughter of the king of Corinth.
  • 54. Fearing for his daughter, the king ordered that Medea and her sons leave the country.
  • 55. Jason thought nothing of his betrayal, and believed that Medea had brought about her own exile.
  • 56. She killed Jason's wife with a poisoned robe, and then killed both her sons, believing it was more merciful than letting them live, and then left.
