The Island of the Laestrygonians
•His men with
a dozen ships
arrived at
“the rocky
stronghold of
Lamos;
Telepylus, the
city of the
Laestrgonians.
•Laestrygonsians – a
people of gigantic size
and cannibals too.
•The giants ate many of Odysseus’ men and destroyed
eleve of his 12 ships by launching rocks from high cliffs.
•Only Odysseus’ ship was not destroyed as it was hidden.
•Circe’s Island
After the island of the
Laestrygonians, they arrived
to Aeaea, the realm of Circe.
Circe – a most beautiful and most
dangerous witch. Every man who
approached her she turned into a beast, a
swine.
•Odysseus sent some of his men to
scout the lands on Aeae, but when
they do not return, he become
worried.
•Circe turned them into swine. She penned them in
a sty and gave them acorns to eat. They eat them;
they were swine yet men inside, aware of their vile
state but they were under her power.
•When he knew what was
happened to his men, e went to
Circe to help them.
•On his way Hermes met him.
He told Odysseus about the
herb (moly) which could save
him from Circe’s deadly art.
•He took the herb and went on
his way.
•He reached Circe. When
Circe used on him her power,
she failed.
•She turned his men back into men again. She
treated them with all kindness and they stayed
happily with her for a year.
•Before they left her, she told them the way to reach
home and that is to reach Teiresias (the holy man of
Thebes.
•In order to reach Teiresias, they must
cross the river ocean and beach the
ship on Persephone’s shore (the
entrance of the dark realm of Hades).
Odysseus must go down and find the
spirit of Teiresias.
•There was only one way to induce
his ghost to come to him, by killing
sheep and filling a pit with their
blood.
•The Underworld
•All ghosts were craving to drink blood, every one
rushing to the pit and Odysseus must draw his
sword and keep them away until Teiresias spoke to
him.
•He saw the ghost of Teiresias and asked him on how
he can get home.
•According to Teiresias; they might do some injury to
the oxen of the Sun when they reached the island
where they lived. And Odysseus himself would reach
home and although he would find trouble waiting
for him, in the end he would prevail.
•After that, he saw his mother there Anticlea who has
committed suicide in depression.
The Island of Sirens
•From Circe he had learned
that they must pass the
island of the Sirens.
Sirens – marvelous
singers whose voices
would make a man
forget all else and
would steal his life
away.
But Odysseus told his men
about them and the only
way to pass them safely was
for each man to stop his ears
with wax.
•Scylla and Charybdis
•They passed the
sirens but a sea
peril next awaited
them – a passage
between Scylla and
Charybdis.
Scylla – a six heads sea serpant, Odysseus has chosen to
sail it while on Charybdis – a giant whirlpool, he did
not chose to sail it because he knew that if he went to
Charybdis, the whole ship would be destroyed.
However, if he went towards Scylla, six men would die.
•A sacrifice brae Odysseus made.
•Island of the Sun God
•After leaving from the Scylla and
Charybdis, they traveled to the island
of the Sun God.
•His men acted with incredible folly. They were
hungry and they killed the sacred oxen. Because of
that the vengeance of the Sun was swift.
•As soon as the men lift the island a thunderbolt
shattered the ship. All were drowned except
Odysseus.
•Calypso’sIsland
Odysseus found the island of
women, with a nymph named
Calypso, with whom Odysseus has
a seven-year affair with
•After the 7 years,
Hermes convinced
Calypso to let Odysseus
build a new ship so he
could sail home.
•Phaecians land
•After 7 years staying with Calypso, he
reached the Phaecians Land.
•The Phaecians accepted Odysseus and he
explained his tenyear journey to them
during a feast. They happily gave him a ride
home on one of their magical ships.
•Ithaca
•Finally, he made it back to his home.
Athena disguised him as a beggar so he
can remain hidden while he analyzed the
loyalty of his friends and family.
•He confronted his son Telemachus and
reveals his identity to him. Penelope laid
down a challenge to the suitors.
•Any one of them who can string
Odysseus’ bow and shoot it through the
axe- handles like Odysseus used to do
would be her choice.
PENELOPE
TELEMACHUS
•None of them could do it, until the beggar got a
chance. He was ridiculed as he tried, but Odysseus
shot the arrow perfectly. Athena then changed his
appearance to his previous one.
•The suitors were awestruck. It was then that
Odysseus and Telemachus began their attack. With the
help of Athena and Zeus, they slaughtered all the
suitors. Odysseus, his father, Telemachus and other
loyal servants meet them in battle. Laeters killed
Antinous’ father with a lance. Zues soon commanded
the fighting to stop. Odysseus finally reclaimed.
•Odysseus took his place as king, once again,
alongside his wife Penelope.
