2. • Jason was a prince, who lived near Colchis, Greece. When
Jason's father died, it was his turn to take on the throne.
But, his uncle, Pelias stole it from him.
• The only way to get his throne back was by stealing the
golden fleece from an island on Colchis. So, Jason and his
companions built a boat, called Argo, and set off to Colchis.
They became known as the Argonauts.
3. • When they set off, the Argonauts were attacked by a flock of
birds, that dropped sharp bronze feathers on them. When they
finally arrived in Colchis, Jason was tested by ploughing a field
using fire breathing bulls, and sowing it with serpents teeth. The
teeth turned into warriors, and Jason managed to trick them into
fighting each other. When Jason went to get the fleece, he
realized that it was guarded by a snake, so his lover, the sorceress
Medea, distracted it.
• As they fled home, they where attacked by the Sirens, bird-
women that draw men to their deaths by singing. One of the
Argonauts, Orpheus, played his lyre and drowned out their voices.
When they arrived home, Medea tricked Pelias to his death, by
killing a sheep and replacing it with a lamb. Pelias agreed that
Medeas men could kill him, thinking that he would wake up, and
live young again. Unfortunately, he died, and Jason reclaimed his
throne.

6. • A long time ago, on an island called Crete, there lived a monster. It was
called the Minotaur. It had the body of a man and the head of a bull. The
Minotaur ate children.
• Now, King Minos had defeated the King of Athens in a war. To avoid the
threat of his country being destroyed, every nine years the King of
Athens would send seven boys and seven girls to King Minos as a
sacrifice.
• The King of Athens had a son called Theseus. When he learnt why the
boys and girls were being sent to Crete, he decided to go to Crete as one
of the prisoners and kill the Minotaur.
7. • King Minos had a daughter named Ariadne. When she saw
Theseus, she fell in love with him and decided to help him to
defeat the Minotaur. Ariadne gave Theseus a ball of string and
told him to tie it to the entrance of the maze. He unwound it as he
went through the passages, so that he could follow it back out
again.
• When Theseus found the Minotaur, he killed it with one blow of
his sword. Then he quickly wound up the string and led all the
young people out of the labyrinth. They sailed back to Athens.
They were the first people to have survived going into the
Minotaur's labyrinth!
