INTRODUCTION
Research is a systematic and scientific
enquiry for relevant information on a specific topic. Research is
an art of scientific investigation. Action Research is a process of
systematic inquiry that seeks to improve social issues affecting
the lives of everyday people. Action Research is a type of
evaluation study. It is a concurrent evaluation study of an action
program launched for solving a problem or for improving an
existing situation. In the quest for development, advancement,
excellence and promotion of welfare of people, government,
institution and voluntary agencies undertake action programs for
achieving specific goals or objectives.
Historically the term Action Research has
been long associated with the work of Kurt Levin, who viewed
this research methodology as a cyclical, dynamic and
collaborative in nature. Through repeated cycles of planning,
observing and reflecting individuals and groups engaged in
Action Research can implement changes required for social
improvement. Stephen Corey was the first who used the term
Action Research with teachers. He was the person most
responsible for the concept of action research development.
Stephen Corey states that Action Research is the process by
which practitioners attempt to study their problem scientifically
in order to guide, correct and evaluate their decisions and
actions. His book “Action Research to Improve School
Practice” was published in 1953.

Kemmis and Mc Taggart view Action
Research as a collaborative process carried out by those with a
shared concern. Carl Glickman says that Action Research in
education is study conducted by colleagues in a school setting of
the result of their activities to improve instruction. Action
Research is also called teacher research and teacher as
researcher, is an approach designed to develop and improve
teaching and learning. Action Research is done by teachers to
understand their own teaching and students. The most effective
Action Research results in opportunities to improve learning and
engagement. Emily Calhoun describes Action Research as a
fancy way of saying “let’s study what’s happening in our school
and decide how to make it a better place.
NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE
Traditionally teachers have been the subjects
or consumers of others research. Action Research however,
involves teachers directly in researching their own practice
through topics they select to explore. The purpose of Action
Research is to help teachers improve their instructional practices
by reflecting deeply on their work. Action Research is different
from research conducted by academicians at universities. The
goal of academic research is usually to conduct research that
will generalize to larger populations. In contrasts Action
Research are more interested in gaining knowledge that can be
directly applied to their own teaching context. Action Research

is helpful for the improvement in education, developing
scientific consciousness, solving classroom problem and school
problem. Action Research can play an important role in the
sphere of education. Action Research made improvements in
education and it developing scientific consciousness among
teachers and school administrators.

CONTENT ANALYSIS
Education is the process of enabling
the individual for leading a mature life, by developing the power
of reasoning and judgments. In the field of education so many
innovations were introduced for the developments. Action
Research is one of the major innovations which introduced for
the improvement of education.
ACTION RESEARCH IN EDUCATION
Action Research is an attractive
option for teacher researchers, school administrators and other
stake holders in teaching and learning environment to consider.
Specifically Action Research in Education can be defined as the
process of studying a school situation to understand and improve
the quality of educative process. It provides practitioners with
new knowledge and understanding about how to improve
educational practices or resolve significant problems in
classrooms and schools. Action Research uses a systematic
process, is participatory in nature and offers multiple beneficial
opportunities for those professionals working within the
teaching profession. These opportunities include facilitating the
professional development of education, increasing teacher
empowerment and bridging the gap between research and
practice.

Educational Action Research focuses
on three levels of Action Research, individual teacher research,
small teacher groups, or teams in a single school or a single
department and school wide research. In keeping with
qualitative research, in which the focus is on a particular setting
most Action Research studies take place in a single school.
Action Research is a tool that is used to help teachers and other
educators uncover strategies to improve teaching practices; it is
viable and realistic endeavor for all educators. Action Research
requires teachers to design a study in an area of internet that they
would like to carry out area of interest that they would like to
carry out in their classrooms or schools. Many times Action
Research is considered a professional development opportunity
because frequently teachers test a new instructional strategy,
assess a new curriculum program or evaluate an existing
pedagogical method.
Action Research is defined as one
form of meaningful research that can be conducted by teachers
with students, colleagues, parents or families in a natural setting
of the classroom or school. Action Research allows teachers to
become the researcher and provides opportunities for them to be
learners by improving instructional practices and reflecting
about pedagogical choices as well. Teacher Action Research is a
method for educational practitioners to engage in the assessment
and improvement of their own practice. It can be an individual
tool, helping classroom teachers reconsider their teaching
methods or to adapt in order to solve a problem.
9. 9
BASIC STEPS IN ACTION RESEARCH
► Identify a problem.
► Plan the research.
► Collect and organize data.
► Analyze data and make interpretation.
► Reflect on the process and what you learned.
► Share findings and take action.
► Repeat the cycle with new question or problem found in your
researches.
ADVANTAGES OF ACTION RESEARCH
There are many benefits to conducting
Action Research but it does require time and energy. The major
advantages of Action Research are;
►lead to positive change in your classrooms and school
►offer professional development and continual improvements
►provide opportunities for collaboration with colleagues
►create an opportunity to reflect on your own practice
10. 10
►lead to overall change in the field of education
CONCLUSION
There is clear evidence to suggest
that Action Research is a valuable exercise for teachers to
undertake. It offers teachers a systematic, collaborative, and
participatory process of enquiry that actively seeks to address
areas of concern or redress. Action Research provides teachers
with the technical skills and specialized knowledge required to
effect positive changes within classrooms, schools and
communities. Ultimately the solution based focus, emphasis on
fostering practitioner empowerment and pragmatic appeal of
Action Research collectively render this research methodology a
worth wile professional development activity for teachers. To
conclude, universities must include Action Research as a core
unit in teacher preparation degree program either at the
undergraduate or post graduate level, as the Action Research
sequence holds significant value to improving practice within
classroom, schools and communities.
