There are four main methods (ABCDs) to improve workplace acoustics: absorb, block, cover-up/control, and diffuse sound. Acoustic planning for rooms should consider reverberation time and sound reflections. For cinema halls specifically, neighboring auditoriums should be separated by soundproof walls, ceilings should have acoustic surfaces, and reverberation times should decrease from low to high frequencies. Common soundproofing materials include acoustic foam, insulation, panels, fabrics, coatings, floor underlayment, and architectural elements.
