provide a patient to prevent impairments, enhance physical
function , prevent health related risk factors and optimize
overall health status , fitness of well being.
 Therapeutic exercises designed by physical therapists
are individualized to the unique needs of each patient.
A patient is an individual with impairments and
functional limitations diagnosed by physical therapist.

 1. prevent impairment
 2. improve or restore or enhance physical function
 3. prevent or reduce health related diseases.
 4. optimize overall health status, fitness or sense of
well being.

 Improves mental performance
 Improve lung capacity so that they work efficiently
 Reducing workload on heart
 Helps deals with stress
 Patient is able to relax
 Work efficiency increases
 Help one find new area of enjoyment with friends.
Precautions while prescribing
therapeutic exercises
1. Regardless of the type of exercises, safety is a
fundamental consideration whether exercise is
performed independently or supervision.
2. Patient health history and present health status.
3. Patient under medication
4. Environment in which exercise is performed
safe , adequate space and proper support , ground

 Equipment used should be well maintained and used
properly.
 Accuracy of exercise, proper body posture, correct
movement pattern , performance with accurate
intensity , duration and speed must be graded by the
therapist.
 Patient must be informed about the signs of fatigue,
risk of injury and importance of rest during recovery
phase of exercise.
Indications
 Impaired ambulation
 Tight/ contracted muscles, tendons and fascia.
 Mobilize joints (ROM restricted at joints)
 Improve circulation
 Improve cardiovascular capacity , improve fitness and stamina.
 Improve coordination
 Rigidity, spasticity and flacidity of muscle.
 To improve balance of pt (static and dyanamic)
 Promote relaxation
 To improve muscle strength and achieve max. voluntary contractile force of
muscle.
 Improve exercise performance and functional capacity

 Poor mental health

  • 1. Is the systematic , planned performance of bodily movements, postures or physical activities intended to provide a patient to prevent impairments, enhance physical function , prevent health related risk factors and optimize overall health status , fitness of well being.
  • 2.  Therapeutic exercises designed by physical therapists are individualized to the unique needs of each patient. A patient is an individual with impairments and functional limitations diagnosed by physical therapist.

  • 6. Precautions while prescribing therapeutic exercises 1. Regardless of the type of exercises, safety is a fundamental consideration whether exercise is performed independently or supervision. 2. Cont…….  Equipment used should be well maintained and used properly.  Accuracy of exercise, proper body posture, correct movement pattern , performance with accurate intensity , duration and speed must be graded by the therapist.  Patient must be informed about the signs of fatigue, risk of injury and importance of rest during recovery phase of exercise.
