In Frida Kahlo's painting My Grandparents, My Parents and Me, Kahlo shows what it is like for a
family in the Mexican culture. Kahlo's painting conveys the preconceived notions of being
conscious of your roles in the family, for instance, the painting displays that the woman is supposed
to marry, have a child, raise the child and have the family of her own. It also displays the family
lineage and what a woman or man aspires to be in life. Currently Sandra Cisneros resides in San

Frida Kahlo was born July 6th 1907 in Coyoacan Mexican, where she also died July 17th 1954. She
was born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón, and grew up with two older sisters, Matilde
and Adriana, and a younger sister, Cristina. Her father Wilhelm was a German photographer, who
immigrated to Mexico, and got married to Frida Kahlo's Mexican mother Matilde. When she was 6
years old, she got polio. She limped when she walked during her recovery, because the disease had

Even though she wasn't an official member of Surrealism Most of her artwork was very influenced
by her personal issues in her childhood and from her accident, and her artwork was also always
autobiographical. She also used her own mixed ethnic background in her artwork, and she let her
German–Mexican background affect her work.
The attached painting is called The Two Fridas and is her most famous work. She painted it in 1939
during her divorce with her husband. On the right, she painted herself wearing a European costume,
and one the right she is wearing a Mexican Costume, representing her Mexican background. She
also holds a locket with a picture of Rivera. The picture also show her bleeding heart. The painting
was purchased by the Natinal Institute of Fine Art in Mexico City in 1947 for about $1000.
She divorced Diego Rivera, but they got remarried in 1940 and they both were in involved with
other people. Her health issues became a problem in 1950, after she was diagnosed with gangrene in

The complex web of cultural determinations and predefined ideological system are predominant in
the lives of the female characters named Tita, Gertrudis, and Frida Kahlo in the movies Like Water
for Chocolate and Frida. Furthermore, throughout history, the development of female idealizations
and norms, which powerfully influences the behavior of women throughout society, has derived
from a masculine structure that is imposed onto the female gender. Although this is still prevalent in

Frida Kahlo did not originally aspire to become a painter. Her goal in life was to become a doctor
but a tragic bus accident at 18 left her physically and mentally scarred for life. During her months of

still had enough energy to do something other than study to become a doctor and without giving it

Though this project was created as an assignment for my making class, much of my own thought
and imagination went into it as the requirements and expectations were vague. Likewise, although
this piece is not graphic design nor digitally created, I feel that this is one my best works that
utilized a distinctive thought process and showcases my artistic style. (This is a photo of the

When first introduced to this project the only requirements addressed were that four objects with
one serving as a container were to be created and become a portrait of any person. The other
requirement was the one had to be constructed out of metal, other than that one could create
anything they felt was necessary. I chose Frida Kahlo as the subject of my portrait as she was and is
an iconic artist that I find very intriguing. I had already been aware of Kahlo and several of her
works before this specific assignment, her complicated history, and continual persistence served as
my inspiration source. I was inspired by Kahlo for this portrait since she has made several self–
portraits within her lifetime and developed her unique personalities striving as an independent
female artist. I felt the need to utilize the opportunity to create an atypical piece in admiration of the
unique individual. The objects of the portrait are made up of a hand painted flower pot displaying

"Self–Portrait with Monkeys" was painted by Frida Kahlo in 1943. Frida was born in Coyocan,

bus turned out to be dangerous in a collision, because it splintered and a metal handrail impelled her.
At the time, Kahlo was unaware of her injuries and the severities of them. The injuries would go on
to affect her for the rest of her life. The aftermath began the artist's dark turn on herself reflection.
In the aftermath of her wreck, Kahlo began to paint as a form of therapy (Morrison). Her purpose
was to heal and to express herself. She had studied art in school, however she did not focus on it
until her recovery. Her mother encouraged her artwork and helped make it possible by providing a
mirror for Kahlo to use to view her artwork while laying down.

Cultural Identity is "The definition of groups or individuals (by themselves or others) in terms of
cultural or subcultural categories (including ethnicity, nationality, language, religion, and gender)"
(Oxford Reference). Everyone has cultural identity even though some are unaware of theirs because
their habits and traditions might be seen as normal to the person and they might not make the
connection that it is a cultural tradition or connected to their cultural identity. Some people are very
aware of their cultural identity and have conflict within their identity because the cultures may not
coincide. Frida Kahlo's Self Portrait: On the Borderline Between Mexico and the United States and
Pat Mora's "Legal Alien" both show cultural conflict through symbolism, conflict, and purpose. In
both artworks, conflict between cultures can be seen through symbolism. In Frida Kahlo's Self
Portrait: On the Borderline Between Mexico and the United States symbolism can be seen by the
boundary stone on which she stands. The boundary stone is connected directly to a machine on the
U.S. side by a cord. The machine on the U.S. side is also shown to have a cord that connects to the

Destino and Self–Portrait as a Tehuana: Love's Journey Art is unappreciated today as people live on
their phones and sift through their Twitter feed, rather than visiting a local museum or art gallery.
The word "art" is very relative as it can represent just about anything ranging from a complex
realistic painting, to a simple red sheet of canvas, to a hit–song on the radio. For millennia, art has
been used to convey the messages people want heard. The short film, Destino, by Salvador Dali and
Walt Disney, as well as the painting, Self–Portrait as a Tehuana, by Frida Khalo both exhibit the idea
that love comes with difficulties and can be painful at times, but can work itself out as two people
move through their own lives. Destino tells a love story. One scene in particular shows that the
woman cares about the man, that he is on her mind. The woman comes across a statue of a man. She
gets very close to it, with her face nearly touching the statue's, the woman then pulls away, and the
face of the statue melts off. She is in shock, with her hands on her cheeks. Her expression is grim,
and there is a sad look in her eyes. Her reaction to the man disappearing shows that she cares about
him, whoever it was a statue of, and that he was on her mind. Likewise, in the painting, Self–Portrait
as a Tehuana by Frida Kahlo, the same idea is portrayed. In the portrait, Diego Rivera is pictured on
Frida Kahlo's forehead, symbolizing that he is on her mind. Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo were
married, and had their ups and downs. Despite their struggles, Kahlo did not stop loving Rivera,
with him always being on her mind. Both pieces of art, the film Destino and the Self–Portrait as a
Tehuana both show that the male in the relationship is on the female's mind. At a point in the film,
the idea that the love between the man and the woman will not last is displayed when the two are
running toward each other and the sand sinks. Huge rocks penetrate the ground and the two are
separated by the giant walls in front of them. This symbolizes the misfortune of their love as it
appears unattainable due to the obstacles in their wake. Similarly, in Kahlo's painting, the canvas is

He grew up in Ireland to a wealthy family but his parent s moved between Ireland and England so
he always felt dislocated. He didn't seem to have a career or direction. He had a problematic
relationship with his father. His father introduced him to a friend of his who he instructed to take
him under his wind and make a man of him. Unbeknownst to his father the friend likes young
handsome gay men. The friend took him to Berlin and introduced him to cabaret amongst

When he started this artwork (study of Innocent the X) he had to go to Rome to view Velázquez
portrait of Pope Innocent the X. When questioned about his paintings he said it wasn't because he
had anything against the pope and then he went on to suggest some lie. The real reason was the idea
of power and anger that makes people do terrible things and distorts them. In the original painting
the pope is screaming but in the nightmarish portrait by Francis he is screaming and angry with rage

Exploration of Myself as a Learner I went to Strath Haven, a public high school in a fairly wealthy
suburb of Philadelphia. Because my school district was academically successful and did not suffer
financially, I was able to enjoy many perks that other schools have been forced to cut such as a rich
arts program and myriad electives. In addition to an honors track, Strath Haven offers many
Advanced Placement courses and allows students to take classes at nearby Swarthmore College. In
high school, I probably would have been described as a "well–rounded student": I was an AP/honors
student, took a class at Swarthmore, competed as a three–season athlete, and presided over the book
club. As I will discuss later in my profile, I struggled a lot with time management skills, a problem I
would say has worsened since I started university. For the most part, though, my teachers naturally
catered to my learning needs. However, while I was still there, Strath Haven used the "Integrated
Math Program," which purports to foster creative and critical thinking because it "calls on students
to experiment with examples, look for and articulate patterns, and make, test, and prove conjectures"
(IMP website). Instead, IMP made me feel lost, and I yearned for the example–based approach used
by my middle school teachers. I was unsurprised when the test in Brain–Based Strategies identified

Mexican artists, more than most other artists in the Americas, exemplify the political and social
obligations of artists. According to Soltes (2011), several Mexican artists of the early twentieth
century were inspired by the revolutions and political unrest occurring in Mexico, which was
reflected in their work. Diego Rivera (1886–1957) considered one of Mexico's Renaissance artists,
influenced by European avant–garde style, painted Zapatista Landscape (1915). This work was done
as Rivera's tribute to the Mexican revolutionary "Emiliano Zapata who had played a key role in the
1910 Mexican Revolution that had overthrown the then President Porfirio Diaz" (Soltes, L43, 4:42).

Iron Woman Frida Kahlo is the most known Mexican artist for her selfportraits. Majority of her
paintings were including herself. She would paint her deep rooted feelings, a number of them may
be found disturbing for some, for example: My Birth, My Nurse and I, Henry Ford Hospital, The
Broken Column, and many others. Frida Kahlo was a surrealist considering the time of her work
starting in the 1920s.
Born July 6th, 1907, in Mexico with Mexican roots from her mother and German roots from her
father, Frida Kahlo was the second youngest of four. Frida contracted polio at a small age and was
left with a thinner leg deformity. At age 18 she had a tragic accident where she suffered major
injuries from her shoulders to her feet. The two she never fully recovered from was her broken

Frida Kahlo Tragedy, a crippling experience many people endure in life, yet some give up and the
courageous few fight back. Frida Kahlo exemplifies the strength required to express oneself openly
and boldly, sharing her painful life through paintings. Kahlo is one of the most famous female
painters from Mexico and is known for her mutilating, heartbreaking and courageous self–portraits
of her life. Through her various paintings and self portraits, she has created a journal and self–
biography of her life that will give her immortality and inspire future generations of artists. Frida
Kahlo has become an icon of female creativity from her emotionally charged paintings of her life,
unfortunate tragedies and battle of survival. Kahlo was never a woman of conventional ways. She
was bold with her art and views of politics as well as being eccentric from what was expected of a
female in Mexico.
A childhood for most adults is a time of enjoyment and freedom. Unfortunately that enjoyable time
was shortened for Kahlo, molding her into the passionate, spirited artist the world has come to

Frida Kahlo was born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón, July 6th, 1907, in Coyoacan,
Mexico. Her mother, Matilde Calderon y Gonzalez, was of indigenous and Spanish descent. Her
father, Wilhelm Kahlo, was German. The combinations of the two heritages gave Frida a rich
cultural background, which was a key part of her artwork. Kahlo developed polio at the young age
of 6, which left one of her legs thinner and weaker than the other one. It is also speculated that she
may have had spina bifida, which would also hinder the growth of her leg. Although she suffered
from these afflictions, her father encouraged her to be active and participate in sports, such as

The mural 'Del Porfirismo a la Revolución' (From the Dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz to the
Revolution) is a portrayal of Porfirio Díaz's leadership and the Mexican Revolution. It is a very
accurate representation of the uprising as this mural was created right during the Mexican
Revolution. You can see how unpleasant of a time this was in Mexico from the mood of the picture:
the dull but vibrant colours, the striking images, and the grim faces. In the mural there is a spot
showing the citizens rising up against the ruling elite. They are wearing 'zapatista' clothing,
signifying that they are supporters of Emiliano Zapata, a revolutionist at the time. Meanwhile, to the
right, Porfirio Díaz sits in comfort watching women dance. Porfirio Díaz is enjoying himself whilst
sitting, just watching and doing nothing about what is happening all around him. A whole country is

During this persecution Frida encountered the love of her life, Diego Rivera. He was also a very
famous painter at that time also of Mexican descent. At the age of 22, Frida Kahlo married Diego

I don't usually watch bright, colorful movies but I definitely would make an exception for Frida. The
colors and the score used in the film always heightened a scene's mood, whether it be joy or despair.
The film utilized bright colors so often that their absence had a profound effect when Kalho dealt
with loneliness and heartbreak. I've always thought Frida Kahlo as an extremely interesting person.

of healing. Frida Kahlo was a painter, who used multiple moments in her life to influence her style

Diego Rivera was born in Guanajuato, Mexico, where he was began his interest in drawing at an
early age. He began his study of art at the age of ten, where he attended the San Carlos Academy of

Frida Kahlo was born in Mexico 1907. She was a Mexican artist who painted from the 1920s until
she died in 1954, she liked to paint herself the best, so she is most well known for that. Frida got
into a car accident when she was young that left her injured. Her art reflects her pain, she was
unable to walk properly and in pain throughout the rest of her life. She was super influenced by
surrealism, she didn't like to have her art categorized though, she said that she paints her reality and
not dreams or nightmares. She painted sixty–six self–portraits that all portray her pain, cultural
identity, heritage, and intense emotion.

The middle ground has a whole bunch of gray pipes and metal in a dirty and dead–looking
background. The sky is by a horizon covered in skyscrapers. Smokestacks exhaust fumes by the
American flag. The name "Ford" is written across these factory chimneys. The American side looks
unhealthy and polluted, a place you wouldn't want to necessarily go to. It's pretty obvious she
preferred Mexico over the United States.
The left half of the painting is covered in nature and other beautiful things, this side is of course her
interpretation of Mexico. The sky has two clouds, one with a sun that in my opinion looks
unnecessarily sad, and a moon, with a similar distraught. There are a lot of plants on the ground by
Frida's feet. Cacti, flowers, some not even bloomed yet, but all are extremely beautiful. On the dark
brown, healthy ground there is two mini fertility statues, surrounded by rubble and a stone skeleton's
head. The horizon has a big Mexican pyramid that is getting struck by lightning. I think it represents
that all the beauty of Mexico is in despair, but even though everything is hurting, there is still so

Recently, a man became acquainted with a group of macaque monkeys and set up his camera to take
pictures of them. However, he couldn't do it himself, so he made the monkeys take pictures of
themselves. Wikimedia saw these pictures and immediately uploaded them to their website, starting
a heated debate between the photographer, David
Slater, and Wikimedia. The debate was over whether or not David owned the copyright to those
pictures, and it was voted that he didn't because in the copyright laws, only humans that actually

To start, David Slater set up his cameras. He put in work, the setup was his doing, and therefore the
rights should be his. An old saying states that one reaps what one sows, however, it appears that one
must also make the plant grow as well, instead of allowing it to do the task itself. David sowed his
seeds in setting up the cameras, and where is his reaping? It is free on the Internet, no strings
attached. While David did make some money off of his pictures, he no longer receives profit from

Another flaw is found in the copyright law stating that only a human can own a copyright, and since

one of the most influential Latin American artist's Frida Kahlo was a female Mexican painter,
recognized for her elaborate Mexican dress and detailed self–portraits. Suffering through many
struggles and tragedies in the beginning stages in her life, including an almost fatal bus crash and

That same year, she joined a flock of students which shared the similar political and intellectual
views. She fell in love with the ringleader Alejandro Gomez Arias. Three years later, September
19th, 1925, an afternoon spent roaming around the city with her boyfriend Gomez Arias. Frida and
Alex caught a bus that would take them home to Coyoacán. The new bus was brightly painted with
two benches along the sides. It was nearly full but Alex and Frida found seats together near the back.
The bus driver made a fast exit out of town. As the bus driver began to turn out of the city, a street
trolley approached. The bus driver tried his best to pass in front of the turning streetcar, his attempt
was unsuccessful.
The bus collided with a streetcar and Frida's life took a serious turn. A steel handrail impaled her
through the hip, causing her spine and pelvis to fracture. This unfortunate accident left her in a great
deal of pain, both physically and physiologically. Regardless what the doctor's said, Frida survived
this crash that left her in a full body cast for three months, Frida fished her first self–portrait. In
hopes of taking her mind off the pain and killing time, she started to paint. Her parents encouraged
her to let her creativity flow, they even built her a special easel so she could paint while on bed rest,
