Bicycle Thieves Neorealism
The Bicycle Thief is a deeply moving neo–realist films of the 1940's focused on the state of Italy in
the aftermath of WWII, which depicts one man's loss of faith and his struggle to maintain personal
dignity in poverty and bureaucratic indifference. The director use neorealism in this film to show the
working class life, set in the culture of poverty, and with the implicit message that in a better society
wealth would be more evenly distributed. The majority of the movie is focused around the bicycle.
The main character Antonio Ricci is having a hard time finding a job but all of that changes after he
own a bicycle, which was later stolen. Joined by his son Bruno, Antonio struggles to find his bicycle
and tries to still one, eventually resorting

A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Article 'Bicycle Registration'
Language Analysis
Craig Richards article "Bicycle registration: radical, expensive, and sure to get people off their
bikes" was published in The Age on the 7th May 2014. In this opinion piece Richards writes with
disbelief and assertiveness that the registration of bicycles will discourage people from continuing
or starting cycling while impacting on their health, our privacy and the governments budget. The
accompanying image depicts that this registration is a restriction of cyclists that will impact on their
healthy lifestyle.
Richards begins his article with "Bicycle registration: radical, expensive, and sure to get people off
their bikes". This title immediately names the issue and in the chronological order that they would
occur. It attacks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He uses colloquial language with the term 'mind boggling' to describe the implications and their
impact on our lawyers and accountants. It makes the reader lose faith in the lawyers and accountants
ability to control this scheme. It appeals to the readers hip–pocket nerve when Richards describes
their local budget 'as a sad old dinghy collapsing in a bay' that will have a another 'gaping hole'
punch into hit by this scheme. Richards moves on to identification with the rhetorical question "why
stop at bikes?" when addressing Evans wish to identify every bike. He uses a satire to answer to
rhetorical question in suggesting 'we also put number plates on skateboards, Nike Free Runs and
walking sticks'. Richards concludes with another mention of the barcoding anecdote, creating a
circular link in his article. He then echoes his past remarks, beginning with inclusive language to a
historical allusion, writing 'we've all learnt enough from history to know where that leads'. Richards
finishes by giving his name and position in the bicycle network, giving himself credibility to his
arguments and expert

Bicycles Are Used All Around The World
Bicycles are utilized all around the world. Some are designed purely for speed on the road. Others
are designed for sturdiness off of the road. People ride bicycles for various reasons, such as:
competition, fitness, and recreation. Further, when considering bicycles that are used for traveling,
specifically commuting to and from work, the two key features of the bicycle that should be
considered are comfort and speed. However, once an appropriate bicycle is designed and developed,
the next step in the marketing process is testing the product. The market testing strategy that is being
tested for this bicycle prototype involves test marketing the bike and marketing program in one or
two urban areas with large commuting populations before beginning manufacturing, promoting, and
distributing the bike on a national scale. The goal of the market testing strategy is to garner results
that provide information which will help the marketing team make a more successful national
launch. This strategy is common, and will have multitudinous benefits as well as inevitable
disadvantages that may or may not outweigh the advantages.
The marketing team's sanguine expectations of test marketing the bicycle are determining whether
or not the current design adequately satisfies the needs of the average commuter. In determining if
the market testing strategy will assist the success of the product launch, it is more important to
figure out if the testing will provide adequate information for the

Kootney Bicycle Case
Case Study:
Kootenay Bicycle Company
Prepared for:

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Kootenay Bicycles (Kootenay) build custom frame or bike in a large metropolitan area in western
Canada since 2002. Although sales have been steadily increasing since inception, it has not been
successfully translated to profits. Signs of operational inefficiencies, lack of financing and limited
expandability limits its growth.
This report analyzes Kootenay's current strategic alternatives, with a diagnosis of the company at all
levels to formulate the best strategic direction the company should undertake. As a result, the
following strategic options were considered and Kootenay is recommended to: ... Show more

External Environment Multiple alternatives have surfaced for Kootenay including facility
expansion, financing and channel distribution. These opportunities can assist Kootenay to address
the growing demand in Canada and North American for high–quality customized frame bicycle
market. Externally, Kootenay must compete with the low cost mass–manufacturer, custom bike
makers at all levels and unexpected demands in the market.
Financial Analysis As shown in Exhibit, profitability has been a concern to Kootenay – gross
margins are below industry average of 28–50% for its complete bike products (Entrée; –0.83%,
Dlux; 7.76%, and Ultra;–6.73%) where materials have represented a high percentage of the costs
(58 – 74%). Selling frame alone has shown stronger profitability (23.33%) but overall returns needs
to be improved (ROA/ROE are –14%/–22%). Activity ratio has shown the benefit of order–to–make
or no overstocking of selling products (inventory turnover is 13.07 days) but Kootenay has an
extended collection period (18.96 days). Its shortage of cash ($780) discourages any short–tem
obligations. As for its coverage ratios, a large part of the equity is financed through owner's
investment. Also, the allocation of 100% salary to direct labour cost has masked any labour that
should be regarded as manufacturing overhead.

Persuasive Essay On Riding A Bicycle
Did you ever realize how important bicycles are in our everyday lives? According to dictionary.com,
a bicycle is "a rider–powered vehicle with two wheels in tandem, powered by the rider turning
pedals connected to the rear wheel by a chain, and having handlebars for steering and a saddle–like
seat for the ride." The celerifere is said to be the very first "bicycle" created by Comte Mede De
Sivrac in 1790. It had no steering, no petals, and it had four wheels. Riders would push off the
ground with their feet to gain the power to glide forward. Later, Ernest Michaux invented a bicycle
with pedal and rotary cranks in 1861. Thanks to Ernest and Comte, I can enjoy the benefits of riding
a bicycle. The bicycle has changed the way I live and is one of the best inventions ever made. While
riding my bicycle, I can enjoy family bonding experiences. When I ride my bicycle with my family,
I have many conversations about my day and about life in general. For example, last Saturday, I
went on a bike ride with my father. We talked about the Dallas Cowboys, and how they aren't doing
so well. He said it might be because Dak Prescott doesn't throw very accurately, or it might be
because of the lack of Ezekiel Elliot in their recent games. We had a great time talking while biking,
and it was a great bonding experience. In addition to having conversations, I can also have races and
enjoy fun competition with my family. I always remember the day when I was riding my bicycle

Persuasive Essay On Bicycle Safety
It has been asserted many times by mothers and law enforcement that people should use a bicycle
helmet, but many ignore the tip and increase the danger they face on a bike. Surprisingly in
California only those under 18 must wear a helmet (Coalition), but even adults should wear them as
the chance of injury increases when riding without one. The reasons why those under 18 have to
wear a helmet are reasonable as the organization KidsHealth in the article "Bike safety" informs
people that "Every year, about 300,000 kids go to the emergency department because of bike
injuries, and at least 10,000 kids have injuries that require a few days in the hospital. Some of these
injuries are so serious that children die, usually from head injuries". Death is a big reason to cause
the law to require kids to wear helmet, so all cyclists who wish to ride safely should wear a helmet
regardless of age. It is such an important piece of gear that bicycle safety is almost impossible to
think of without also thinking about a bike helmet. As in D. K. Howe's article "Bicycle Safety" the
United States Safety Administration provides the tip, "Wear a properly fitted helmet. It is the single
most important piece of safety equipment you can use".
Now that the importance of following laws and wearing a helmet have been addressed, it is time
bicyclist are aware of keeping a well maintained bike to lower the amount of accidents even more.
Safety is not all about keeping the head secured and knowing what

Vittorio De Sica's The Bicycle Thieves is a simple story set amidst a post–war Rome. It is a
neorealist film characterized by setting the story amongst the poor and working class. The film
surrounds the difficult economical and moral conditions of post WWII Italy, reflecting the
conditions of everyday life: Poverty and desperation, with the implicit message that in a better
society, wealth would be more evenly distributed. The plot is simple, surrounding a man, his son and

This further creates authenticity of the film and shows the hardship that the people face during that
period. As for the actors, none had the slightest experience in theater or film. Antonio (Lamberto
Maggiorani) was a factory worker in Breda factory, Bruno (Enzo Staiola) was found hanging around
in the street and Maria (Lianella Carell) was a journalist. Despite his age, Bruno already plays a
mature role in the family, as can be seen in him working. Nonetheless, dressed like his father in
overalls, he remains at his father's side or in his shadow. We first see him proudly cleaning the
newly reclaimed bicycle, and he gently rebukes his father for not complaining to the pawnshop
workers about a dent for which they are responsible. Bruno's self–assured walk and obedience to his
father's authority are nothing compared to the love for his father we see in his eyes. In addition,
Bruno serves as his father's moral compass: "What are you, my conscience?" Antonio asks,
annoyed, moments after striking him. As his father's conscience, but also as his son and friend,
Bruno suffers public humiliation with him. One distinct prop that the movie uses is the bicycle. the
brand name of Antonio's bicycle, Fides, which means "faith" or, even more ironically for this story,
"reliance." (Nothing could be less reliable than that red bicycle.) This can be seen in many scenes.

Case Study On Bicycles
1. Introduction
Opportunity & Background Description.
Students in rural townships in South Africa, face difficulties being timeous at attending lectures.
Bicycles allow them to cover longer distances in less time, provided the bicycle is strong and
durable. We also discovered that most students have to transport heavy loads long distance over
rugged terrain to meet basic livelihood needs. In South Africa, the disconnect between suppliers and
end–users has resulted in bicycles designed to be inexpensive rather than robust, most begin to fall
apart within weeks because they are not suitable for all–terrain. This has dire consequences for
people without access to other modes of transportation.

Bicycle Thieves (1948) is the story of a father and his desperate search for his stolen bicycle,
without which he faces poverty and an inability to support his young family. The film was directed
by Vittorio De Sica, who co–wrote the screenplay with Cesare Zavattini, based on the novel of the
same name by Luigi Bartolini. André Bazin (1971) notably champions the view that it is a 'true
masterpiece' of Italian neorealism, to which it was a relative late comer, in fact he insists that De
Sica had reignited the aesthetic of neorealism, breathing new life into what he felt was a struggling
movement.1 In many ways, his assertion was true, with the likes of Rossellini and Visconti

This produces an almost documentary–like aesthetic, layering the fiction with a sense of honest
reality; the camera feels like a spectator placed in the environment, reflecting the ambience of
documentaries. Similarly, in Bicycle Thieves, the use of location shooting produces a similar result;
the busy Sunday market, the search by the Tiber, Antonio's failed theft outside of the stadium; all of
these scenes carry an atmosphere of actuality. Bicycle Thieves succeeds as a realist film here, the
use of real location lends a sense of authenticity to the aesthetic quality of the film. While it may not
have the same raw delivery as Rome, Open City, which was haphazardly shot during the liberation
of Italy, we are still presented with a cinematography and mise en scene which respects the reality it
is attempting to portray. Bicycle Thieves prospers in this sense, the simple journey through Rome
over the course of the film does not exploit the wonders of the ancient city. De Sica purposefully
shows us the streets we are not familiar with, the parts of the city which belong to its people, not its

The Bicycle Thieves
The Bicycle Thieves is an Italian Neorealist black and white movie directed by Vittorio De Sica.
The movie is about an unemployed father named Antonio Ricci, who is finding a way to recover the
family's lost bicycle. The bicycle was a very important thing that was owned by the Ricci family, but
it was stolen by a young man while Antonio was working. The movie was filmed in an outskirt of
Rome. However, this film is different from other films, because it is neither romantic nor
sentimental, but it is a movie that showcases the real life drama of the Italians after the second
World War.
The editing in the last sequence of the movie The Bicycle Thieves is inconsequential in that it does
little on its own to contribute to a scene because it alludes to reality than fantasy. It continues to
show the audience a real life drama, rather than a stereotypical movie drama where fantasy is added.
Especially in the last sequence of the movie, the build up of Antonio's intensity does not need much
editing because then it will look overly dramatized. For example, with the long shot part where
Antonio finally stole the bicycle, there was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, the audience was also introduced to settings that avoided the usual associations of Rome
to truly immerse the audience to the real life Italian culture. Especially in the last sequence of the
film, everything seems to be continuously raw from the setting to the main actors and to the
supporting actors in connection from the beginning of the film. In the last remaining shots, as the
camera was following the two main characters, Antonio and Bruno, it was as if the they were the
only ones that mattered; no more thoughts of the bike but just both of them as two human beings.

Irony In The Bicycle Thief
Landscapes of Power and Powerlessness in Graziadei and De Sica's (1948) The Bicycle Thief
Set in the depression times of post–World War II Italy, Graziadei and De Sica's (1948) The Bicycle

Henri Lefebvre (1991) asserted that the production of space concerns the "performances of power
through (as cited in Aitken & Dixon, 2006, p. 332). Space is power. Large spaces between the rich
and the poor in the buying area underline the performance of space. The representation of space is
much more crowded for the poor as shown in the Piazza Vittorio. Gonzaga (2017) would call this
the "cinematographic unconscious of slum voyeurism" (p. 102). Representational spaces are filled
up with the power of the government and the rich. The scene of the linen being brought up in the
warehouse of linen characterizes society's gross inequality, suggesting that the rich steals from the
poor the most. Depicting the poor as they are illustrates the spaces denied to them. If they are
concentrated in any space, it is the space of neglect and impoverishment. Filmic landscapes in The
Bicycle Thief reveal the reel and the real, the widespread social conditions and their social meanings
for the working–class in desperate conditions. De Sica uses mise–en–scene to reveal poverty and
mobility to underline the lack of movement of the poor. In the end, they steal from each other, an
ironic misdeed, when the rich steals from them the most, specifically by denying them better
economic opportunities. The ending is pessimistic but realistic: the poor have no one else but
themselves, as they huddle to an uncertain

Strengthen the muscular parts
Like many other sports, cycling contributes to firming the different muscles located in various parts
of your body.
For those who are too lazy to work out regularly, the muscular system tends to reduce by 50% of its
strength
On the other hand, it can cause your muscles to get weak and numb permanently. Even too lazy to
practice is also the cause of aging muscle and make it become useless in the future
Therefore, riding a bicycle allows the body's muscles to be activated such as the abdomen, shoulder,
arm and calf. Especially, it helps to firm the sensitive parts in the waist and abdomen. This creates
chances for the muscular system to be strengthened and operated much more efficient.
Increase the strength of bones

When it comes to transportation several college students struggle to find an option that would work
best for them. Parents don't always have the sufficient funds to provide their child with a vehicle;
therefore, many of them decided to go the bicycle route. Not only are bicycles more cost effective,
but also help the environment. Unfortunately, a larger majority of college students experience theft

Transport By Bicycle May Seem To Be A Thing Of The Past
Transport by bicycle may seem to be a thing of the past but benefits associated with the trend

of the population consider cycling as a means of recreation and for leisure; and so most people don't
consider bicycles as a mode of transportation. Cycling is for everyone of all shapes, sizes, and age.
Over the years, America has learned to depend solely on cars and trucks, which operate on fossil

Bicycle Thieves Themes
Bicycle Thieves, an Italian film directed by Vito De Sica is a classic of the Neorealist film
movement. The film depicts a story of a father and son and their journey together to find the main
character's; Antonio Ricci's; stolen bike. On a baseline level, this film shows a sense of mystery and
action, all surrounded by the family unit. The family unit divides into a few prevalent themes within
the film such as the bond of husband and wife, the bond of the father and son and the karma
philosophy and specifically how it affects community. The sense of family is a strong theme within
the film Bicycle Thieves. This is played out through Antonio's relationships with his wife, Maria. In
the beginning, Antonio and Maria's relationship takes hold of the story. Their relationship to another
is compact and yet pure. In many ways, at first one can see Maria's character as plot device. Yet
upon closer examination one can see she sets up the strong family unit that drives her husband and
son; Bruno; upon their mission. Maria is a strong character and a strong women. I believe it is her

It speaks to the philosophy around decision making, and how one decision against another human
being can affect one's own life. While Karma is a mere theory I believe this film brings this theory

(approximately 20 minutes into the film) Antonio convinces Marias not to " waste her money" on
repaying the physic women; who predicted Antonio's grace of a new job to Maria in a previous off

Analysis Of The Bicycle Thieves
Two scenes from the Bicycle Thieves that although they have nothing to do with the plot they are
essential for the film are: the scene where many bicycles and parts of them are being sold in a
piazza, this is an important scene because it adds to the film a feeling of optimism that ends up
turning into hopelessness. The other scene is the one where the thief has an epileptic fit adding to the
film a feeling of despair. These two scenes also contributes to the overall meaning of the plot by
showing us that the harder you try to accomplish what you want in life the more obstacles you will
have and the more hopelessness you will fell.
The first scene where bicycles are being sold at the piazza is very important. Ricci is hopeful at first,
and so are the watchers, that he will be able to find his bike at that place and all his problems will be
solved. He looks everywhere for it, at first it seems like his bike might be there because there is an
overwhelmingly amount of bicycles and pieces of them and the people around him helping him are
very optimistic, but as he keeps looking and looking things start getting more complicated because
every bike, tire, bell, and frame he sees could belong to his bike giving him hope that he has found it
but the moment he realizes is not his, the hopes he had to find it sinks deeper. We can observe this
when he's looking at the bikes lined up in minute 34:08, when he's looking around an expression of
anxiety and disappointment forms in his face

The Importance Of Bicycle And Helmet Safety
People ride bikes for various reasons. Some people ride bikes for fitness purposes, some ride bikes
to get from place to place, and some ride bikes to clear their mind after having a long day. Whether
you ride for fun or for sport it is important to know the factors that go into bicycle and helmet safety.
A study in 2014 shows that 103.7 million people rode a bike that year and 34 percent of Americans
age three or older rode a bike at least once in that year ("Study: 103.7 Million Americans Ride
Bikes"). The importance of bicycle safety cannot be underestimated. According to the 2008
Alabama Traffic Crash Facts, there were 182 bicycle crash injuries and four fatalities. In 2008,
children 14 and under accounted for 27% of the bicycle crash injuries. Bicycle helmets are 85% –
88% effective in preventing head and brain injuries; however, only 20% – 25% of all bicyclists wear
bicycle helmets ("Bicycle Safety"). One of the first factors that go into bicycle and helmet safety is
learning how to ride a bike. Many people learn how to ride a bike when they are four or five years
old and some do not learn until they are older (Donaldson). Learning how to ride a bike is the first
and most important step because without knowing how to ride a bike you will not know what type
of bike you will need.
The first step when learning how to ride a bike is to make sure you are in a suitable location.

He gently scolds his wife for her superstitions, but Maria holds firm to her belief in the woman's

and an understanding father. His warmth belies the stereotypically "macho" Latin male. He helps his
wife carry heavy buckets of water and engages his young son Bruno as a reliable helper, and trusted
him with the preparation of the cherished bicycle for the first day's work. Hired as a billposter,
Antonio was required to affix looming images of Rita Hayworth to the gray and ancient walls of
Rome; ironically, he juxtaposes Hollywood's glamorous world vision to the stark realties of post–
War Europe. While Antonio struggles to smooth out the lumps under the advertisement, a thief slips
up behind him and steals his bicycle. Antonio chases him in vain, loses him in the rush of the mid–
morning traffic. Thus begins an unrelenting three day search for his stolen bicycle. Accompanied by
Bruno, Antonio combs Rome to recover his property, which has come to represent both his
livelihood and any hope for a prosperous future. The police are of no help; they cannot be bothered

Parts can be ordered and received in one week.
The related issue of stock outs is a significant consideration. The success of the customized bicycle
is predicated on having timely availability. As such, current supply flexibility should make the risk
of a stock out very small, less than 5%. Stock outs should not affect the order to delivery schedule of
the Company.
DELIVERY
National Bicycle relies on Hansha to deliver its bikes to the Company's dealer network. They have
proven to be efficient and reliable, and should be able to accommodate customized bicycle delivery.
However, the Company will have to revise its process and scheduling to avoid multiple single item
deliveries to the Honsha.

The Bicycles Changed America Essay
The Bicycles Changed America
The great changes in American society that came with the introduction bicycle in the late 19th
century are often overshadowed by the influence of the automobile in the following decades. Today,
bicycles are often seen as an alternative mode of transportation – a cleaner and more
environmentally conscious form of travel. Because of this, it may be difficult to realize the
incredible modernizing effects that bicycles had on American society when they were first
introduced. Manufacturing and marketing techniques introduced by the bicycle industry were
massive steps towards modern industrial practices. In addition, by making individual travel available
to many people for the first time, bicycles changed the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Drais de Savebrun was aware, however, of some of the important aspects of the draisine that hinted
at the future possibilities of bicycles: "when roads are dry and firm it runs on a plain at the rate of 8
to 9 miles an hour which is equal to a horse's gallop...[and] on descent it equals a horse at full
speed." (Smith, 1972, pp 4)
The next major development came with the acquisition of pedals. In 1855, the first bicycle with
pedals, the velocipede, was invented and became briefly popular when it was brought to the United
States. Because of the ride provided by its iron tires and wooden frame, the velocipede became
known as "the Boneshaker." The excitement around the velocipede died off within a few years,
however, as it proved to be difficult to ride, expensive, and dangerous.
During the second half of the 19th century, most of the major improvements were made that allowed
for the invention of modern bicycles. An iron frame rather than a wooden one, rubber tires (solid
rubber, however), rubber–coated pedals and steel rims were all developed during this time. Although
the new bicycles, known as "Ordinaries," had one wheel much larger than the other, were difficult to
mount and dismount, had no brakes, and were expensive, they became much more popular than any
of the previous ancestral bicycles. They were promoted on the basis that they provided exercise to
the riders, and that they had

The Necessity of Bicycle Helmet Laws Essay
The Necessity of Bicycle Helmet Laws
Bicycle accidents have increased dramatically in the United States. About 500 American children
and teenagers die each year in bicycle accidents, and three–quarters of those deaths come from head
injuries (Jacques 1). Recent federal safety reports suggest that helmets can reduce the risk of head
injury, but that only 4% of children under the age of ten wear helmets when bicycling. The
percentage drops even more for young riders, particularly the rebellious 11– to 14–year–old age
group. The younger generation often cites peer pressure, or the "nerd" factor, as the main reason for
not wearing a helmet, and many adults say, "I did not wear one as a child, and I'm all right."
Although states have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When his bicycle was struck by a car on a busy street in Lock Haven last June "the driver, hit the
front of his bicycle and knocked Tom off," recalls the youth's father, Jim Carnale. "Tom slid across

the car there that his helmet made." Even wearing the helmet, Tom suffered a cut on his head,
requiring 30 stitches. His helmet was shattered on the inside and the outer casing was split, but
because he was wearing a helmet he was merely hospitalized overnight for observation. Dr. Joe
Kausaski a physician at the Williamsport Hospital said had it not been for the helmet, Tom would
have been dead from severe head injuries. Another example of the helmet's benefits involves Susan
Dunlop, a colleague of my son Louis. Susan was involved in a very low impact bicycle accident,
which resulted in a severe blow to her head. Fortunately, she was wearing a helmet. Yet, she still
received a serious concussion, causing her to withdraw from the University of Pittsburgh. Even
though the blow to the head affected her vision and sense of balance, the doctor told her that had it
not been for the helmet, her injuries would have been much more serious, perhaps even fatal.
According to Jeffrey Sacks of the Division Injury Control in Atlanta, if only 50 percent of the
cyclists had worn helmets, more than 1000

Vancouver Bicycle Rental System Essay
In response to the research report, this draft outlines my basic blueprint to research bicycle rental
system. The research will lead to the recommendation of building a bicycle rental transportation
system in Vancouver.
Introduction
From today to the future year 2030, it is appropriate to estimate that Vancouver population will
increase by more than one million. Vancouver public transportation will hardly bear the pressure due
to the largely increase in population. Other than population pressure, the public transportation is
criticised by huge carbon emissions as well. For sharing the responsibility of Translink, it is
necessary to build the bicycle rental system as a supplement of sky train and bus.
The business idea is to establish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is foresee that in next 10 years, more and more people do not take the bus at peak times, but by
bike to avoid the crowds.
Our Public bicycle system is one of "remote circulation" model, the more the stations, the more
people use it. Thus, the revenue will increase. However, building station net works is the most
difficult problem the development of public bike system. If government will not sponsors this
program, a department or enterprise alone to establish rent houses is difficult to reach the
economical of scale. Therefore, the new business system will end result of high unsustainable costs.
For solving this problem, we should seek the cooperation from Vancouver government. Our
management team should formed by the Municipal Construction Commission, Public Transport
Group and all other relevant units. Urban management, traffic police, public transportation and
communities together selected stations address. All stations will located in sidewalks, parking lots,
bus stations and other public areas at a very low rent cost or even free.As the bicycle becoming an
important component of urban public transport part, the market orient mode will difficult to go
through. Our team explicitly proposed public bike should be implemented largely public operation.
Public bike rental system, hardware, software should be invested from the government budget.
To avoiding loss from stealing, our team will also cooperate with university of

Manufacturing Processes Research Report
Introduction
In 2011 the US federal government spent approximately 6 billion dollars on research and
development in the field of Engineering (National Science Foundation, 2013). Through these
technical revolutions we are entering into an age of advanced manufacturing, where down times and
complete turnaround times have been shorted exponentially. One advancement, Hydro–forming, has
changed the way many products are produced and manufactured in the past 3 decades. It is a die
forming operation, used primarily for creating complex parts without the expensive cost of tooling,
and die making. Tubular–Hydroforming will be the focus of this report as it is a key process in the
production of a Bicycle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Advantages/ Disadvantages of Tubular–Hydroforming
The advantages of hydroforming highly out way other forms of manufacturing processes across the
board. One of the largest factors that puts hydroforming ahead of the other manufacturing processes
is sheer cost of tooling.
Due to the fact that you only need the negative mold tool of the product that you are making, your
cost drops significantly. Furthermore unlike conventional tooling processes because the
manufacturing requires no cutting or further machining after the part have been made. You can
reduce the amount of machinery that you need to correct any imperfections.
Also when hydroforming products you are able to deliver an equal amount pressure over the surface
that is required giving a uniform thickness to the part you are making. That reduces costs of material
as well as the ability to guarantee that the part you are making is to the desired thickness, keeping
waste down and rejected parts down to a minimum.
When creating a bike frame, it helps the strength to make all the structural areas with the most
surface area possible. As well, materials need to be reduced to cut down cost, which is mitigated
when hydro–forming because it is a highly calculated operation where the materials are specifically
chosen to maximize the potential. Hydroforming uses the same material and can also do high detail
items within the product

Pros And Cons Of Wearing A Bicycle Helmet
Either a child or an adult, there is an argument asking if you should wear a bicycle helmet when
riding a bicycle. Research shows that head injuries occurs because bicyclists do not wear a helmet.
There are even laws in some states that says to wear helmets before hopping onto your bike. The
question is, do you really have to wear a bicycle helmet every time you travel on your bike? These
pros and cons both support both sides of this argument strongly, but there are many opinions. This
argument is based on the reliability of science and explains the law of motion. Ultimately, I will
explain which side of the argument best supports the topic by using the sources given.
In the view of the pros side wearing a bicycle helmet is made for the rider's safety. This is the reason
why the helmets were made. In addition to wearing a helmet, it is recommended and it can prevent
serious injuries by 50 percent. Especially for children because it is the helmet's job to protect their
skull since their brains are still progressing. It just takes a few seconds for you to put on a helmet
and your head will be secured. In Sir Isaac Newton's first law of motion, it states ". . . an object in
motion tends to stay in motion, with the same direction and speed. Motion (or lack of motion)
cannot change without an unbalanced force acting." This piece of evidence from Source 1 explains
that if the bicycle is in motion, it will stay in that speed and it will be hard to stop the bicycle. From

Baldwin Bicycle Company (BBC) is a full–line bicycle manufacturing company with 40 years of
experience. In 1982, BBC has revenue of over $10M for 98,791 units produced. BBC exclusively
distributes through independently–owned retailers, their bicycles are known for their above–average
quality.
In May 1983, a rapid–growing Northwestern discount retail chain, Hi–Valu, Suzanne Leister, VP

prices that the wholesale prices of comparable bikes sold through Baldwin usual channels. 8. If the
proposal will pursue BBC requirement for purchasing, inventory and production cost will increased.
9. Hi–Valu would hold the units on consignment in its own warehouses and withhold payment until
delivery to a specific store. 10. A bicycle would be paid within 30 days once a bicycle was shipped
to a specific store or 120 days had elapsed in the regional warehouse.
Alternative courses of action: 1. Reject proposal
RISKS:
a.) BBC may face continually declining sales due to a poor economy.
b.) BBC will continue to produce at only 75% production capacity.
c.) Another disadvantage is that the offer price of Hi–Valu was lower than the regular selling price.
d.) There is an additional cost involved in producing additional units from Hi–Valu the $5,000
additional cost plus the asset related cost.
e.) The possibility that the current dealers of BBC might drop–out line if they find that BBC is
making bikes for Hi–Valu. f.) The freight charge will be shouldered by BBC until it reached the
destination of Hi–Valu warehouse.
g.) additional from regular sales of 3,000 units from regular costumers.

Ignorance In The Bicycle Thieves
Humans have the tendency to romanticize many aspects of our society, be it wars, relationships, or
histories. However with this romanticism, comes ignorance, of most negative aspects of truth and
reality. This nostalgic ignorance and apathy towards those negatively affected by generally
romanticized events is the central theme of Vittorio de Sica's neorealist work The Bicycle Thieves.
This argument is created by accurate incidental music, stark contrast in shots, and fluid, human
camera tracking throughout the film.
Every background and still of The Bicycle Thieves tells its own story, via the mise–en scen
technique. One of the first scenes is the pawn store scene, where Maria turns their bedsheets in order
to redeem Antonio's bike, a necessity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This realism is based in both the very human nature of the acting, as expressed in Charles Burnett's
essay Ode to the Common Man, as well as in the fluid camera movements of the film. This humanist
camera movement is best exemplified by the scene where Antonio believes Bruno to have jumped
into the river, after Antonio slapped him. The camera follows Antonio, creating an effect of truly
being there, further enhancing the realism, and therefore the thematic material as the two were
linked. The human nature is further revealed within the acting of the film, an observation made in
Burnett's essay. "Her [Maria] look of disappointment is powerfully affecting. I [Burnett] often
wonder if that was de Scia or her." (Burnett). This argument is a direct proof at the argument, as the
disappointment expressed at the denial by the richer store operator, directly paralleling the apathy, if
distaste of the rich towards the society's poor. This connection however, would be completely lost if
not for the inherently human and personal performances by the

The Invention of the Bicycle
Bicycle, as one of the most ordinary items in the recent 21th century, actually possesses the
legendary experience of triggering the development of the new freedoms of women during the
1890s. In the article "Reframing the Bicycle: Advertising–Supported Magazines and Scorching
Women," the author Ellen Garvey illustrates that the emergence of the accessible bicycling for
women became the target of conservative attack. The conservative views believed that the bicycle
would become threats to women's sexual purity and gender definition. The advent of advertising–
supported magazines, articles and fictions, on the other hand, played a significant role in shifting the
conservative ideas for the public concerning with the commercial interests of the bicycle industry.
Generally, the author did a tremendous job on analyzing some specific articles, advertisements and
fictional stories for both sides of the anti–bicyclers and probicyclers. However, the author neglected
to explain the social background of why women's bicycle riding would receive the conservative
attack for the readers from 21th century and why the advertising, articles and fictions would
influence the conservative views. The main thesis of this article is that "the discourse of
consumption constituted by the advertising, articles, and fiction within the developing mass–market
magazine of the 1890s subsumed both feminist and conservative views in the interest of sales (p.
66)." Then, the author started introducing the

Disadvantages Of A Bicycle
Introduction
Bicycles are one of the most common forms of transportation in the world. Most children remember
their first bike; with it came the chance to explore their world with more freedom than ever before.
As we grow, however, bicycling becomes more than just a childhood rite of passage. Wind in our
hair and feet on the pedals, we have several good reasons to climb on and take a trip. Much of the
world uses bicycles as a primary form of transportation.
Generally, cycling can be fancy by almost everyone, regardless of your age or your physical ability.
There are different kinds of bicycles; the mountain bike, a mountain bike is a bike design for riding
a mountainous terrain. The bamboo bike it is a bike created from a bamboo tree, rowdy bike is
created for uphill and downhill road, and last the fixed gear, a bike with a different way of stopping.

injuries. While traumatic injuries can primarily be attributed to accidents, overuse injuries frequently
occur in cyclists who ride regularly. Lower back pain is common in cyclists since they use their
lower backs to control and power the bike. The stress added onto the back may produce chronic
pain. Bike riders may also suffer a variety of injuries to the tendons or muscles in the knee areas. In
some of these cases, it may be necessary to see a doctor or physiotherapist. Another is that you
cannot rely on cycling for a really long journey, like something that would be more than ten miles.

André Bazin stated when referring to the renowned classic Bicycle Thieves, "the 'truth' suggested by
the film was that, in a situation of social breakdown, the poor had to steal from the poor in order to

aspects. We play witness to the cycle of victims turning into thieves described by Bazin from the
beginning to the end of this film. In the article assigned with the film, it described the

Bicycle Thieves (1948), tells the story of a poor man and his family, who have struggled while he
was unemployed. It begins with him being offered a job of hanging posters that requires the

Antonio's very first day that things turn upside down for the family.
On his first assignment alone, Antonio's bike is stolen as he was up on the ladder pasting up one of

The Effects Of Riding A Bicycle For Recreation

Riding a bicycle for recreation, sport or simply transport may impact many different areas, including
the environment, economy, society and health. The following literature review will focus on various
health impacts of riding a bicycle. It will review relevant materials from journal articles, reports and
government documents from various countries that have been recently published. This literature
review will cover the relationship between cycling and obesity, cycling and pollution, and cycling

al. 1999). Additionally, a report extracted from the 2003 New South Wales adult health survey, using
data from 6810 participants, found that 60.8% of men who drive to work were likely to be
overweight and obese compared to only 39.8% of men who cycled to work (Wen & Rissel 2008).
Although this study concluded that these relationships were not also found in women, the greater
part of the literature available seems to suggest that there is a strong correlation between being
physically active by riding a bicycle and maintaining a healthy weight in both men and women.
In addition to the studies focusing on the adult population, research suggests that individuals who
cycle during childhood are less likely to be overweight and are more likely to have an increased
fitness level, therefore reducing their risk of having health problems as adults. One such study
conducted with a total of 3345 adolescents in grades 8 to 12 across the United States found that
adolescents who participate in bicycling more than four times a week are 48% less likely to be
overweight as adults (Menschik et. al. 2008). The same study also stated that overweight adolescents
who participate in bicycling three to four days per week are 85% more likely to become average
weight adults. Furthermore, regular cycling can increase a child's fitness level and therefore
strengthen their muscles and bones during adolescence, which can assist in reducing

Bicycle Pollution
Transportation is an important factor in the United States of America. Many people need to get to a
certain point at a certain time, and traffic gets worse day by day. Riding a bicycle would be the best
kind of transportation for the Tampa Bay Area because it reduces pollution in the air, it allows
people to exercise, and it cost less than a vehicle. First and foremost, riding a bicycle reduces
pollution in the air because it does not require gasoline to function. Many people do not realize how
much gasoline pollutes the air, however they continue to use vehicles as a form of transportation.
Riding a bicycle saves one thousand five hundred kilograms of greenhouse gas emission whenever
someone cycles ten milligrams to work (Government). I believe people in the Tampa Bay Area
should ride bicycles rather than driving a vehicle because the amount of pollution vehicles causes
harms the environment. When riding a bicycle not only does it protect the environment, but it
reduces the amount of greenhouse gases being brought into the environment. Pollution is an
increasing concern especially for those people who decide to cycle to work (Boseley). In my
opinion, pollution is caused by those who decide to use a vehicle that requires petroleum to function,
however those who chose to drive a vehicle, those people should respect a person who is making a
difference in the world. For example, if a car is driving by they should not accelerate quickly, for it

Choosing The Bicycle As A Form Of Transport
Choosing the bicycle as a form of transport
New waves of people are considering the change from driver to cyclist for their daily commute to
work or school. As a novice to cycling, commuters should research a few things before hitting the
trails. People want to know a few benefits to a potential commuter before getting started. While
switching to cycling one would probably wonder if biking is going be more cost effective. In what
way would biking be a substantial benefit to one's health and what if any impact will cycling have
on the community or environment around them. Before a decision is made, here are a few things to
think about prior to making the big change.
Biking is a very inexpensive means of transportation. Pedaling costs nothing at all and gets one to
exactly the same location, maybe just a little bit slower. In the end the payoff seems well worth it
with rising gas prices to at least cycle for short distances. There is a very low cost involved in
purchasing cycling tools, gear and accessories. Most maintenance will be flat tires and tune ups
which are very easy to learn. Maintenance can also be free through internet videos, other cyclists,
and free classes in the community. All of the parts for maintenance are very easy to install and
therefore all that's needed are parts and little to no cost man power. Even the initial costs are very
low in comparison to other forms of transportation. One can save money on: insurance, gas, motor
oil, car payments, and

Bicycle Thieves Neorealism

  • 1. Bicycle Thieves Neorealism The Bicycle Thief is a deeply moving neo–realist films of the 1940's focused on the state of Italy in the aftermath of WWII, which depicts one man's loss of faith and his struggle to maintain personal dignity in poverty and bureaucratic indifference. The director use neorealism in this film to show the working class life, set in the culture of poverty, and with the implicit message that in a better society wealth would be more evenly distributed. The majority of the movie is focused around the bicycle. The main character Antonio Ricci is having a hard time finding a job but all of that changes after he own a bicycle, which was later stolen. • 3. A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Article 'Bicycle Registration' Language Analysis Craig Richards article "Bicycle registration: radical, expensive, and sure to get people off their bikes" was published in The Age on the 7th May 2014. In this opinion piece Richards writes with disbelief and assertiveness that the registration of bicycles will discourage people from continuing or starting cycling while impacting on their health, our privacy and the governments budget. The accompanying image depicts that this registration is a restriction of cyclists that will impact on their healthy lifestyle. Richards begins his article with "Bicycle registration: radical, expensive, and sure to get people off their bikes". This title immediately names the issue and in the chronological order that they would occur. It attacks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He uses colloquial language with the term 'mind boggling' to describe the implications and their impact on our lawyers and accountants. It makes the reader lose faith in the lawyers and accountants ability to control this scheme. It appeals to the readers hip–pocket nerve when Richards describes their local budget 'as a sad old dinghy collapsing in a bay' that will have a another 'gaping hole' punch into hit by this scheme. Richards moves on to identification with the rhetorical question "why stop at bikes?" when addressing Evans wish to identify every bike. He uses a satire to answer to rhetorical question in suggesting 'we also put number plates on skateboards, Nike Free Runs and walking sticks'. Richards concludes with another mention of the barcoding anecdote, creating a circular link in his article. He then echoes his past remarks, beginning with inclusive language to a historical allusion, writing 'we've all learnt enough from history to know where that leads'. Richards finishes by giving his name and position in the bicycle network, giving himself credibility to his arguments and expert ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Bicycles Are Used All Around The World Bicycles are utilized all around the world. Some are designed purely for speed on the road. Others are designed for sturdiness off of the road. People ride bicycles for various reasons, such as: competition, fitness, and recreation. Further, when considering bicycles that are used for traveling, specifically commuting to and from work, the two key features of the bicycle that should be considered are comfort and speed. However, once an appropriate bicycle is designed and developed, the next step in the marketing process is testing the product. The market testing strategy that is being tested for this bicycle prototype involves test marketing the bike and marketing program in one or two urban areas with large commuting populations before beginning manufacturing, promoting, and distributing the bike on a national scale. The goal of the market testing strategy is to garner results that provide information which will help the marketing team make a more successful national launch. This strategy is common, and will have multitudinous benefits as well as inevitable disadvantages that may or may not outweigh the advantages. The marketing team's sanguine expectations of test marketing the bicycle are determining whether or not the current design adequately satisfies the needs of the average commuter. In determining if the market testing strategy will assist the success of the product launch, it is more important to figure out if the testing will provide adequate information for the ... Kootney Bicycle Case Case Study: Kootenay Bicycle Company Prepared for: Cam Shackelton Feb 13, 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Kootenay Bicycles (Kootenay) build custom frame or bike in a large metropolitan area in western Canada since 2002. Although sales have been steadily increasing since inception, it has not been successfully translated to profits. Signs of operational inefficiencies, lack of financing and limited expandability limits its growth. This report analyzes Kootenay's current strategic alternatives, with a diagnosis of the company at all levels to formulate the best strategic direction the company should undertake. As a result, the following strategic options were considered and Kootenay is recommended to: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... External Environment Multiple alternatives have surfaced for Kootenay including facility expansion, financing and channel distribution. These opportunities can assist Kootenay to address the growing demand in Canada and North American for high–quality customized frame bicycle market. Externally, Kootenay must compete with the low cost mass–manufacturer, custom bike makers at all levels and unexpected demands in the market. Financial Analysis As shown in Exhibit, profitability has been a concern to Kootenay – gross margins are below industry average of 28–50% for its complete bike products (Entrée; –0.83%, Dlux; 7.76%, and Ultra;–6.73%) where materials have represented a high percentage of the costs (58 – 74%). Selling frame alone has shown stronger profitability (23.33%) but overall returns needs to be improved (ROA/ROE are –14%/–22%). Activity ratio has shown the benefit of order–to–make or no overstocking of selling products (inventory turnover is 13.07 days) but Kootenay has an extended collection period (18.96 days). Its shortage of cash ($780) discourages any short–tem obligations. As for its coverage ratios, a large part of the equity is financed through owner's investment. Also, the allocation of 100% salary to direct labour cost has masked any labour that

  • 10. Persuasive Essay On Riding A Bicycle Did you ever realize how important bicycles are in our everyday lives? According to dictionary.com, a bicycle is "a rider–powered vehicle with two wheels in tandem, powered by the rider turning pedals connected to the rear wheel by a chain, and having handlebars for steering and a saddle–like seat for the ride." The celerifere is said to be the very first "bicycle" created by Comte Mede De Sivrac in 1790. It had no steering, no petals, and it had four wheels. Riders would push off the ground with their feet to gain the power to glide forward. Later, Ernest Michaux invented a bicycle with pedal and rotary cranks in 1861. Thanks to Ernest and Comte, I can enjoy the benefits of riding a bicycle. The bicycle has changed the way I live and is one of the best inventions ever made. While riding my bicycle, I can enjoy family bonding experiences. When I ride my bicycle with my family, I have many conversations about my day and about life in general. For example, last Saturday, I went on a bike ride with my father. We talked about the Dallas Cowboys, and how they aren't doing so well. He said it might be because Dak Prescott doesn't throw very accurately, or it might be because of the lack of Ezekiel Elliot in their recent games. We had a great time talking while biking, and it was a great bonding experience. In addition to having conversations, I can also have races and enjoy fun competition with my family. • 12. Persuasive Essay On Bicycle Safety It has been asserted many times by mothers and law enforcement that people should use a bicycle helmet, but many ignore the tip and increase the danger they face on a bike. Surprisingly in California only those under 18 must wear a helmet (Coalition), but even adults should wear them as the chance of injury increases when riding without one. The reasons why those under 18 have to wear a helmet are reasonable as the organization KidsHealth in the article "Bike safety" informs people that "Every year, about 300,000 kids go to the emergency department because of bike injuries, and at least 10,000 kids have injuries that require a few days in the hospital. Some of these injuries are so serious that children die, usually from head injuries". Death is a big reason to cause the law to require kids to wear helmet, so all cyclists who wish to ride safely should wear a helmet regardless of age. It is such an important piece of gear that bicycle safety is almost impossible to think of without also thinking about a bike helmet. As in D. K. Howe's article "Bicycle Safety" the United States Safety Administration provides the tip, "Wear a properly fitted helmet. It is the single most important piece of safety equipment you can use". Now that the importance of following laws and wearing a helmet have been addressed, it is time bicyclist are aware of keeping a well maintained bike to lower the amount of accidents even more. Safety is not all about keeping the head secured and knowing what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Bicycle Thieves Vittorio De Sica's The Bicycle Thieves is a simple story set amidst a post–war Rome. It is a neorealist film characterized by setting the story amongst the poor and working class. The film surrounds the difficult economical and moral conditions of post WWII Italy, reflecting the conditions of everyday life: Poverty and desperation, with the implicit message that in a better society, wealth would be more evenly distributed. The plot is simple, surrounding a man, his son and a bicycle. The film tells a story of Antonio Ricci, an unemployed worker who finally gets a job to paste advertisements in the city of Rome. This further creates authenticity of the film and shows the hardship that the people face during that period. As for the actors, none had the slightest experience in theater or film. Antonio (Lamberto Maggiorani) was a factory worker in Breda factory, Bruno (Enzo Staiola) was found hanging around in the street and Maria (Lianella Carell) was a journalist. Despite his age, Bruno already plays a mature role in the family, as can be seen in him working. Nonetheless, dressed like his father in overalls, he remains at his father's side or in his shadow. We first see him proudly cleaning the newly reclaimed bicycle, and he gently rebukes his father for not complaining to the pawnshop workers about a dent for which they are responsible. Bruno's self–assured walk and obedience to his father's authority are nothing compared to the love for his father we see in his eyes. In addition, Bruno serves as his father's moral compass: "What are you, my conscience?" Antonio asks, annoyed, moments after striking him. As his father's conscience, but also as his son and friend, Bruno suffers public humiliation with him. One distinct prop that the movie uses is the bicycle. the brand name of Antonio's bicycle, Fides, which means "faith" or, even more ironically for this story, "reliance." (Nothing could be less reliable than that red bicycle.) This can be seen in many scenes. For example, right at the beginning of the movie, the bicycle is introduced when the government officer ... • 16. Case Study On Bicycles 1. Introduction Opportunity & Background Description. Students in rural townships in South Africa, face difficulties being timeous at attending lectures. Bicycles allow them to cover longer distances in less time, provided the bicycle is strong and durable. We also discovered that most students have to transport heavy loads long distance over rugged terrain to meet basic livelihood needs. In South Africa, the disconnect between suppliers and end–users has resulted in bicycles designed to be inexpensive rather than robust, most begin to fall apart within weeks because they are not suitable for all–terrain. • 18. Bicycle Thieves Essay Bicycle Thieves (1948) is the story of a father and his desperate search for his stolen bicycle, without which he faces poverty and an inability to support his young family. The film was directed by Vittorio De Sica, who co–wrote the screenplay with Cesare Zavattini, based on the novel of the same name by Luigi Bartolini. André Bazin (1971) notably champions the view that it is a 'true masterpiece' of Italian neorealism, to which it was a relative late comer, in fact he insists that De Sica had reignited the aesthetic of neorealism, breathing new life into what he felt was a struggling movement.1 In many ways, his assertion was true, with the likes of Rossellini and Visconti continuing to produce additions to the canon, De Sica again contributing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This produces an almost documentary–like aesthetic, layering the fiction with a sense of honest reality; the camera feels like a spectator placed in the environment, reflecting the ambience of documentaries. Similarly, in Bicycle Thieves, the use of location shooting produces a similar result; the busy Sunday market, the search by the Tiber, Antonio's failed theft outside of the stadium; all of these scenes carry an atmosphere of actuality. Bicycle Thieves succeeds as a realist film here, the use of real location lends a sense of authenticity to the aesthetic quality of the film. While it may not have the same raw delivery as Rome, Open City, which was haphazardly shot during the liberation of Italy, we are still presented with a cinematography and mise en scene which respects the reality it is attempting to portray. Bicycle Thieves prospers in this sense, the simple journey through Rome over the course of the film does not exploit the wonders of the ancient city. De Sica purposefully shows us the streets we are not familiar with, the parts of the city which belong to its people, not its internationally recognized ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. The Bicycle Thieves The Bicycle Thieves is an Italian Neorealist black and white movie directed by Vittorio De Sica. The movie is about an unemployed father named Antonio Ricci, who is finding a way to recover the family's lost bicycle. The bicycle was a very important thing that was owned by the Ricci family, but it was stolen by a young man while Antonio was working. The movie was filmed in an outskirt of Rome. However, this film is different from other films, because it is neither romantic nor sentimental, but it is a movie that showcases the real life drama of the Italians after the second World War. The editing in the last sequence of the movie The Bicycle Thieves is inconsequential in that it does little on its own to contribute to a scene because it alludes to reality than fantasy. It continues to show the audience a real life drama, rather than a stereotypical movie drama where fantasy is added. Especially in the last sequence of the movie, the build up of Antonio's intensity does not need much editing because then it will look overly dramatized. For example, with the long shot part where Antonio finally stole the bicycle, there was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, the audience was also introduced to settings that avoided the usual associations of Rome to truly immerse the audience to the real life Italian culture. Especially in the last sequence of the film, everything seems to be continuously raw from the setting to the main actors and to the supporting actors in connection from the beginning of the film. In the last remaining shots, as the camera was following the two main characters, Antonio and Bruno, it was as if the they were the only ones that mattered; no more thoughts of the bike but just both of them as two human beings. Irony In The Bicycle Thief Landscapes of Power and Powerlessness in Graziadei and De Sica's (1948) The Bicycle Thief Set in the depression times of post–World War II Italy, Graziadei and De Sica's (1948) The Bicycle Thief narrates the story of Antonio Ricci (Lamberto Maggiorani), who, after finding a job as a bill poster, loses his bicycle to a young thief. He tries to look for it with his son Bruno (Enzo Staiola); however, despite seeing the thief, he fails to recover his bicycle. Desperate, he tries to steal a bike himself but is easily thwarted by a group of bystanders. They plan to bring him to the police station until the owner notices the weeping Bruno and, in an act of compassion, ask others to release the thief. In this paper, I argue that The Bicycle Thief ... Space is power. Large spaces between the rich and the poor in the buying area underline the performance of space. The representation of space is much more crowded for the poor as shown in the Piazza Vittorio. Gonzaga (2017) would call this the "cinematographic unconscious of slum voyeurism" (p. 102). Representational spaces are filled up with the power of the government and the rich. The scene of the linen being brought up in the warehouse of linen characterizes society's gross inequality, suggesting that the rich steals from the poor the most. Depicting the poor as they are illustrates the spaces denied to them. If they are concentrated in any space, it is the space of neglect and impoverishment. Filmic landscapes in The Bicycle Thief reveal the reel and the real, the widespread social conditions and their social meanings for the working–class in desperate conditions. De Sica uses mise–en–scene to reveal poverty and mobility to underline the lack of movement of the poor. In the end, they steal from each other, an ironic misdeed, when the rich steals from them the most, specifically by denying them better economic opportunities. • 30. Bicycle Thieves Themes Bicycle Thieves, an Italian film directed by Vito De Sica is a classic of the Neorealist film movement. The film depicts a story of a father and son and their journey together to find the main character's; Antonio Ricci's; stolen bike. On a baseline level, this film shows a sense of mystery and action, all surrounded by the family unit. The family unit divides into a few prevalent themes within the film such as the bond of husband and wife, the bond of the father and son and the karma philosophy and specifically how it affects community. The sense of family is a strong theme within the film Bicycle Thieves. This is played out through Antonio's relationships with his wife, Maria. In the beginning, Antonio and Maria's relationship takes hold of the story. Their relationship to another is compact and yet pure. In many ways, at first one can see Maria's character as plot device. • 32. Analysis Of The Bicycle Thieves Two scenes from the Bicycle Thieves that although they have nothing to do with the plot they are essential for the film are: the scene where many bicycles and parts of them are being sold in a piazza, this is an important scene because it adds to the film a feeling of optimism that ends up turning into hopelessness. The other scene is the one where the thief has an epileptic fit adding to the film a feeling of despair. These two scenes also contributes to the overall meaning of the plot by showing us that the harder you try to accomplish what you want in life the more obstacles you will have and the more hopelessness you will fell. The first scene where bicycles are being sold at the piazza is very important. Ricci is hopeful at first, and so are the watchers, that he will be able to find his bike at that place and all his problems will be solved. He looks everywhere for it, at first it seems like his bike might be there because there is an overwhelmingly amount of bicycles and pieces of them and the people around him helping him are very optimistic, but as he keeps looking and looking things start getting more complicated because every bike, tire, bell, and frame he sees could belong to his bike giving him hope that he has found it but the moment he realizes is not his, the hopes he had to find it sinks deeper. We can observe this when he's looking at the bikes lined up in minute 34:08, when he's looking around an expression of anxiety and disappointment forms in his face ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. The Importance Of Bicycle And Helmet Safety People ride bikes for various reasons. Some people ride bikes for fitness purposes, some ride bikes to get from place to place, and some ride bikes to clear their mind after having a long day. Whether you ride for fun or for sport it is important to know the factors that go into bicycle and helmet safety. A study in 2014 shows that 103.7 million people rode a bike that year and 34 percent of Americans age three or older rode a bike at least once in that year ("Study: 103.7 Million Americans Ride Bikes"). The importance of bicycle safety cannot be underestimated. According to the 2008 Alabama Traffic Crash Facts, there were 182 bicycle crash injuries and four fatalities. In 2008, children 14 and under accounted for 27% of the bicycle crash injuries. Bicycle helmets are 85% – 88% effective in preventing head and brain injuries; however, only 20% – 25% of all bicyclists wear bicycle helmets ("Bicycle Safety"). One of the first factors that go into bicycle and helmet safety is learning how to ride a bike. Many people learn how to ride a bike when they are four or five years old and some do not learn until they are older (Donaldson). Learning how to ride a bike is the first and most important step because without knowing how to ride a bike you will not know what type of bike you will need. Antonio Ricci is a bill–poster whose bicycle, essential for his job, is stolen by a thief. Joined by his son Bruno, Antonio vainly searches for his bike, eventually resorting to the humiliation of theft himself. Hired as a billposter, Antonio was required to affix looming images of Rita Hayworth to the gray and ancient walls of Rome; ironically, he juxtaposes Hollywood's glamorous world vision to the stark realties of post– War Europe. While Antonio struggles to smooth out the lumps under the advertisement, a thief slips up behind him and steals his bicycle. Antonio chases him in vain, loses him in the rush of the mid– morning traffic. Thus begins an unrelenting three day search for his stolen bicycle. Accompanied by Bruno, Antonio combs Rome to recover his property, which has come to represent both his livelihood and any hope for a prosperous future. SUPPLY CHAIN RESPONSIVENESS Current supply chain responsiveness seems adequate to support the customized bicycle product. The short production time required for the bicycle lends greater production flexibility to the Company. Parts can be ordered and received in one week. The related issue of stock outs is a significant consideration. The success of the customized bicycle is predicated on having timely availability. As such, current supply flexibility should make the risk of a stock out very small, less than 5%. Stock outs should not affect the order to delivery schedule of the Company. (Smith, 1972, pp 4) The next major development came with the acquisition of pedals. In 1855, the first bicycle with pedals, the velocipede, was invented and became briefly popular when it was brought to the United States. Because of the ride provided by its iron tires and wooden frame, the velocipede became known as "the Boneshaker." The excitement around the velocipede died off within a few years, however, as it proved to be difficult to ride, expensive, and dangerous. During the second half of the 19th century, most of the major improvements were made that allowed for the invention of modern bicycles. An iron frame rather than a wooden one, rubber tires (solid rubber, however), rubber–coated pedals and steel rims were all developed during this time. About 500 American children and teenagers die each year in bicycle accidents, and three–quarters of those deaths come from head injuries (Jacques 1). The percentage drops even more for young riders, particularly the rebellious 11– to 14–year–old age group. Advantages/ Disadvantages of Tubular–Hydroforming The advantages of hydroforming highly out way other forms of manufacturing processes across the board. One of the largest factors that puts hydroforming ahead of the other manufacturing processes is sheer cost of tooling. Due to the fact that you only need the negative mold tool of the product that you are making, your cost drops significantly. Furthermore unlike conventional tooling processes because the manufacturing requires no cutting or further machining after the part have been made. You can reduce the amount of machinery that you need to correct any imperfections. Also when hydroforming products you are able to deliver an equal amount pressure over the surface that is required giving a uniform thickness to the part you are making. That reduces costs of material as well as the ability to guarantee that the part you are making is to the desired thickness, keeping waste down and rejected parts down to a minimum. When creating a bike frame, it helps the strength to make all the structural areas with the most surface area possible. As well, materials need to be reduced to cut down cost, which is mitigated when hydro–forming because it is a highly calculated operation where the materials are specifically chosen to maximize the potential. • 59. Pros And Cons Of Wearing A Bicycle Helmet Either a child or an adult, there is an argument asking if you should wear a bicycle helmet when riding a bicycle. Research shows that head injuries occurs because bicyclists do not wear a helmet. There are even laws in some states that says to wear helmets before hopping onto your bike. The question is, do you really have to wear a bicycle helmet every time you travel on your bike? These pros and cons both support both sides of this argument strongly, but there are many opinions. This argument is based on the reliability of science and explains the law of motion. Ultimately, I will explain which side of the argument best supports the topic by using the sources given. In the view of the pros side wearing a bicycle helmet is made for the rider's safety. This is the reason why the helmets were made. In addition to wearing a helmet, it is recommended and it can prevent serious injuries by 50 percent. • 64. Ignorance In The Bicycle Thieves Humans have the tendency to romanticize many aspects of our society, be it wars, relationships, or histories. However with this romanticism, comes ignorance, of most negative aspects of truth and reality. This nostalgic ignorance and apathy towards those negatively affected by generally romanticized events is the central theme of Vittorio de Sica's neorealist work The Bicycle Thieves. This argument is created by accurate incidental music, stark contrast in shots, and fluid, human camera tracking throughout the film. Every background and still of The Bicycle Thieves tells its own story, via the mise–en scen technique. One of the first scenes is the pawn store scene, where Maria turns their bedsheets in order to redeem Antonio's bike, a necessity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This realism is based in both the very human nature of the acting, as expressed in Charles Burnett's essay Ode to the Common Man, as well as in the fluid camera movements of the film. This humanist camera movement is best exemplified by the scene where Antonio believes Bruno to have jumped into the river, after Antonio slapped him. The camera follows Antonio, creating an effect of truly being there, further enhancing the realism, and therefore the thematic material as the two were linked. The human nature is further revealed within the acting of the film, an observation made in Burnett's essay. "Her [Maria] look of disappointment is powerfully affecting. I [Burnett] often wonder if that was de Scia or her." (Burnett). This argument is a direct proof at the argument, as the disappointment expressed at the denial by the richer store operator, directly paralleling the apathy, if distaste of the rich towards the society's poor. This connection however, would be completely lost if not for the inherently human and personal performances by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. The Invention of the Bicycle Bicycle, as one of the most ordinary items in the recent 21th century, actually possesses the legendary experience of triggering the development of the new freedoms of women during the 1890s. In the article "Reframing the Bicycle: Advertising–Supported Magazines and Scorching Women," the author Ellen Garvey illustrates that the emergence of the accessible bicycling for women became the target of conservative attack. The conservative views believed that the bicycle would become threats to women's sexual purity and gender definition. The advent of advertising– supported magazines, articles and fictions, on the other hand, played a significant role in shifting the conservative ideas for the public concerning with the commercial interests of the bicycle industry. Generally, the author did a tremendous job on analyzing some specific articles, advertisements and fictional stories for both sides of the anti–bicyclers and probicyclers. However, the author neglected to explain the social background of why women's bicycle riding would receive the conservative attack for the readers from 21th century and why the advertising, articles and fictions would influence the conservative views. The main thesis of this article is that "the discourse of consumption constituted by the advertising, articles, and fiction within the developing mass–market magazine of the 1890s subsumed both feminist and conservative views in the interest of sales (p. 66)." Then, the author started introducing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Bicycle Thieves André Bazin stated when referring to the renowned classic Bicycle Thieves, "the 'truth' suggested by the film was that, in a situation of social breakdown, the poor had to steal from the poor in order to survive" (51). Bicycle Thieves in its neorealist approach reflects this statement from Bazin in many aspects. We play witness to the cycle of victims turning into thieves described by Bazin from the beginning to the end of this film. In the article assigned with the film, it described the foreshadowing of these desperate times through the dent on the bike, which Antonio would allow even more damage to happen to it through it theft. The idea of theft is trivialized within the film, playing off the framework that at the time the poor truly had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Additionally, a report extracted from the 2003 New South Wales adult health survey, using data from 6810 participants, found that 60.8% of men who drive to work were likely to be overweight and obese compared to only 39.8% of men who cycled to work (Wen & Rissel 2008). Although this study concluded that these relationships were not also found in women, the greater part of the literature available seems to suggest that there is a strong correlation between being physically active by riding a bicycle and maintaining a healthy weight in both men and women. In addition to the studies focusing on the adult population, research suggests that individuals who cycle during childhood are less likely to be overweight and are more likely to have an increased fitness level, therefore reducing their risk of having health problems as adults. One such study conducted with a total of 3345 adolescents in grades 8 to 12 across the United States found that adolescents who participate in bicycling more than four times a week are 48% less likely to be overweight as adults (Menschik et. al. 2008). The same study also stated that overweight adolescents who participate in bicycling three to four days per week are 85% more likely to become average weight adults. Furthermore, regular cycling can increase a child's fitness level and therefore strengthen their muscles and bones during adolescence, which can assist in reducing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. Bicycle Pollution Transportation is an important factor in the United States of America. Many people need to get to a certain point at a certain time, and traffic gets worse day by day. Riding a bicycle would be the best kind of transportation for the Tampa Bay Area because it reduces pollution in the air, it allows people to exercise, and it cost less than a vehicle. First and foremost, riding a bicycle reduces pollution in the air because it does not require gasoline to function. Many people do not realize how much gasoline pollutes the air, however they continue to use vehicles as a form of transportation. Riding a bicycle saves one thousand five hundred kilograms of greenhouse gas emission whenever someone cycles ten milligrams to work (Government). I believe people in the Tampa Bay Area should ride bicycles rather than driving a vehicle because the amount of pollution vehicles causes harms the environment. When riding a bicycle not only does it protect the environment, but it reduces the amount of greenhouse gases being brought into the environment. Pollution is an increasing concern especially for those people who decide to cycle to work (Boseley). In my opinion, pollution is caused by those who decide to use a vehicle that requires petroleum to function, however those who chose to drive a vehicle, those people should respect a person who is making a difference in the world. For example, if a car is driving by they should not accelerate quickly, for it releases toxic chemicals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As a novice to cycling, commuters should research a few things before hitting the trails. People want to know a few benefits to a potential commuter before getting started. While switching to cycling one would probably wonder if biking is going be more cost effective. In what way would biking be a substantial benefit to one's health and what if any impact will cycling have on the community or environment around them. Before a decision is made, here are a few things to think about prior to making the big change. Biking is a very inexpensive means of transportation. Pedaling costs nothing at all and gets one to exactly the same location, maybe just a little bit slower. In the end the payoff seems well worth it with rising gas prices to at least cycle for short distances. There is a very low cost involved in purchasing cycling tools, gear and accessories. Most maintenance will be flat tires and tune ups which are very easy to learn. Maintenance can also be free through internet videos, other cyclists, and free classes in the community. All of the parts for maintenance are very easy to install and therefore all that's needed are parts and little to no cost man power. Even the initial costs are very low in comparison to other forms of transportation. One can save money on: insurance, gas, motor oil, car payments, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
