1. Evaluation Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
2. Themes
The theme that I was trying to portray to my target audience was insecurity.
The song was about a female being insecure and in the music video I showed
insecurities by the boyfriend cheating on the artist whilst she was rehearsing
in the dance the dance studio. This is a common theme shown in music videos
that I researched for example, ‘Keyshia Cole - Trust and Believe’, ‘Ashanti Foolish’ and many more. In the song Insecure by Delilah, the artist is sharing
her feelings about a past or current relationship. Therefore, the music video
was all about possible ideas that could make her feel insecure which was the
arguing, the attention she wasn’t getting from the boyfriend and the cheating.
The theme of insecurity was fluent throughout the rest of the print products.
The clothing worn by the female artist were black plain clothing which
symbolised her sadness and helped to enhance the simplicity of the music
video. The clothing was kept the same throughout the print products apart
from one key narrative moment in the music video where the artist dressed up
to get her boyfriend’s attention which shows it is the turning point of their
relationship and it creates the house style because it goes from striped back
black to the key moment that happens in the video. The male actor portraying
the role of the cheating boyfriend also wore black clothing which was a
representation of him being a villain. The makeup was subtle but a strong,
bold, red lipstick was used to show her feeling of anger towards the situation
she is opening up about in the lyrics. The lighting used in the music video and
print products was artificial, rather than natural lighting to help set an
unhappy mood. The lighting for the music video was very rare but in cases
where lighting was used it was made to be dark and dull which symbolised the
way the female artist was feeling in the inside giving the audience the
atmosphere of depression. These ideas were influenced by THE Album Adele
21’. This album was created because the artist has been cheated on and it was
her way of moving on. The album consisted of pain, anger and revenge, she
wore plain dark clothing and the lighting used for her products where very
dark and gloomy creating an unhappy atmosphere for the audience.
3. Imagery
The imagery was simple but used a lot of media convention. The music
video was purposely kept simple for a sophisticated look, giving the
imagery a professional finish. I used a range of different camera shots and
angles such as, high angled shot, close up, long shots etc. In the music
video the female artist playing the role of the insecure girlfriend was often
looking directly in the camera which differed from the Digi - Pack advert
pack, CD front cover, inside and back when the artist is purposely looking
away from the camera to have an dramatic effect and helps to give the
audience an understanding of how the artists is feeling and her
insecurities. I thought if the artist looks directly into the camera it would
show confidence and in the lyrics at this point the artist was still presently
hurt about what her boyfriend did which gave her the insecurities she is
expressing in the lyrics. By the artist looking away from the camera shows
isolation, loneliness, rejection, etc. This is continuous throughout the
products like Adele. In existing products the artist is normally looking into
the camera to gain a relationship with the audience but I didn’t use this
idea because it wouldn’t go with the theme of insecurity.
4. House style (consistency packaging)
The Digi-pack advert, CD front cover inside and back all were kept consistent
in terms on the style of writing. The colour scheme was black and white
because the black represented how the female artist was feeling and helping
to set the dark and gloomy atmosphere. The white represents the artist’s
innocence. The font enhances the strip black clothing worn by the artist in
the music video and the print products. The signature ‘Delilah’ is written at
the bottom each print product in small white as the artist’s signature, this is
kept consistent so the audience knows these are all products by Delilah. The
lighting is kept dark and gloomy for the print products because it set an
unhappy atmosphere for the theme of insecurity. The title ‘Insecure’ was
kept consistent by having it capitalised with spacing between each letter
which made it look appealing, attractive and eye catching.
5. How effectively do the adverts / CD Digi-packs promote
the video product?
I think that the adverts / CD Digi-packs was successful in
advertising the music video because the same style of
imagery was used throughout the package by the artists
not looking directly into the camera. Also, the photography
taken was using the same high quality as the music video
using the DSLR Camera the images were clear and still kept
the theme of insecurity throughout. Research was
conducted by the creation of the products so I was able to
use past and recent ideas and combine it with ideas of my
own to make it better.
How might your package compare to real media products?
Compare to real media products I think that my package
was realistic because I researched a lot of popular female
artists that have similar genre and lyrics to Delilah –
Insecure, such as Rihanna, Keyshia Cole, Ashanti, Alicia
Keys, Beyoncé, Christina Perri and many more. From
research I used the examples to create and enhance my
own ideas for my print products. My package consists of
blended influential ideas that have been created all as one
but has mainly been influenced by Adele and Rihanna. I
would use technology to extend marketing by using pop up
adverts on YouTube and putting part of the music video on
social network like Twitter.
