1. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
The genre that my group wanted to adhere to was the pop genre. This is because
we wanted to aim our products to people of a similar age to us. For example, our
target audience was 16-25 year old females. This is firstly represented in our
ancillary project through the use of our colour scheme. This is because we used a
colour scheme of black, pink, grey and white. These are typical colours associated
with pop music, pink and white being the most prominent colours associated with
pop. We used this colour scheme to attract the attention of our target audience, as
these bright colours would make our products stand out. I used a house style of this
sort throughout my pieces. This is so my products were consistent in representing
the genre of pop, but also so that they would create a synergy. This is because my
two ancillary projects promote the new single of turning tables. This then works
alongside the video of turning tables to promote the artist Ivy.
Similarly, the imagery that I used works together on each of my products. For
example, on my album cover I used a picture of my artist looking at the camera but
looking more interested in her appearance than anything else. This is to create the
idea of disinterest, because the song ‘Turning Tables’ is about the ending of a
relationship and the artist losing interest in the male character. Therefore, I found this
an ideal opportunity to create the negative connotation of disinterest.
In my final product I used a range of camera shots to show my artist performing on
the beach. In my opinion, the most effective shot I used was a low angle shot. This is
because during the lyrics ‘Under haunted skies I see you’ a low angle shot shows the
sky, grey in colour looking rather dismal. This creates a negative connotation and
allows the audience to feel like the artist is trapped amongst the males grasp and
throughout the song she is trying to escape. Also, a low angle shot is used effectively
for the lyrics ‘As hard as you try, no I will never be knocked down.’ We used a low
angle from behind the artist to show her climbing a sand dune, as she is on a higher
level this connotes the fact that she is a strong a independent female character that
doesn’t get messed around by male characters. I think this is very effective as this is
the ideology that we wanted to encode throughout out video so that the audience
can decode this and feel sympathetic towards the artist. This is because if a person
feels sympathetic towards an artist they are more likely to buy their music because of
the admiration towards the artist and there strong representation of character. Also,
the use of a low angle to show the sky above was used effectively to represent the
lyrics ‘Under haunted skies I see you.’ The low angle shows the sky, grey in colour
looking rather dismal. This creates a negative connotation and allows the audience
to feel like the artist is trapped amongst the males grasp and throughout the song
she is trying to escape.
On the other hand, I think also the use of a high angle is effective as it shows the
lack of control the female had when she was in the relationship. For example, a high
angle is used to show Ivy drawing a love heart in the sand from behind. This then
transcends into a high angle shot from in front of Ivy showing Ivy destroying the heart
in the sand. This is used to connote effectively that perhaps she was controlled by
this male but is no longer allowing this as she is her own person and is not controlled
by others.
2. Also, another effective shot was the use of a black and white shot. This shows the
artist looking down at the camera with her head turned to the side. The fact that this
shot is black and white creates the illusion of history and clarifies to the audience
that this relationship was definitely in the past.
Overall our finished product compares to a real media product as it uses a range of
shots and areas of mise en scene to connote the idea of love and hatred. Our media
product compares to similar products such as ‘Call The Shots’ by Girls Aloud as this
video is based on how the females in the video have their own independence and
are not controlled by male characters. Also our video is similar to the video ‘Yellow’
by Coldplay as it is set on a beach. During our product we tried to use similar ideas
and technical codes to other videos, whilst also adding our own ideas to keep our
video original and create something new.
