1. Evaluation Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conversations of real media products?
2. Camera
The video opens with an extreme close up of the artistās fingers playing on the piano to the
background music this made the music video seem realistic as the artist is playing in time
with the keys in the song which is an (Barthes action code) authenticity. A wide shot of the
artists playing the piano is used which helps to generate realism of the piano keys being
played by the artist. A close shot of the artist is shown when she sings the opening line of
the song this helps to show the reflection of the lyrics in the artistās facial expressions
giving the audience a better understanding of the song. Then a head and shoulder shot is
shown showing more of the artistās body movements and clothing which helps to create an
unhappy scenery by the simplicity of the clothing and the actions made makes the
audience feel that the lyrics begin said are real and she is really heart-broken. Another
extreme close up is shown of the boyfriend and the artist acting the role of the girlfriend
letting go of each otherās hand which was slowed down in editing which is a literal
reflection of her feelings (Barthes action code) symbolising the end of their relationship. At
the chorus the camera shows a long shot of the artist in the studio dancing contemporary
as she dances expressing her relationship and how she feels at this current point in time. It
then goes into a wide shot of the artist against the mirror showing her emotions of being
upset or crying by the frustration facial expression and her hands repeatedly rubbing
through her hair then walking off. After this, is a close up showing the facial expression of
anger being built deep within the artist as it leads into an over the shoulder shot of the
artists arguing with her boyfriend, which, changes to a wide shot by showing the arguing
scene helps the audience have an inside of what their downs were throughout the
relationship. A close is shown of the artists crying with tears coming down her face and
runny mascara (make-up) this helps to show the heart break that has happened in the
relationship and helps to generate sympathy from the audience and is a conventional shot
shown in music videos (Goodwin). An extreme close up of the artistās eyes looking directly
into the camera is used which helps to give a close view of the artist being hurt. The
camera shows a close up and extreme close up of the artistās boyfriend texting I love you
then being received by another girl in a wide shot, this helps to reflect the title of the song
āinsecureā Also, an extreme close up is shown of the mistress opening the text received by
the artists boyfriend with him being her display picture and then a close up of her smiling
and happy to have received the text by him and replying back. A high angled shot of the
artist in a bubble bath reflects the artists being alone the following close up of the artist
face helps to show the reason why she is in the bah through her facial expression and he
ruined make up of her crying and being hurt which reflects the couples break up after the
cheating. The camera pans up to a wide angle shot of the boyfriend playing on a control
whilst the girlfriend is trying to get his attention looking really beautiful and showing her
great entrance. The video ends with a close up of the artist screaming āIām insecureā this is
really dramatic but effect because it sums up the whole music video and the lyrics in one
line showing a distressed facial expression.
3. Mise en scene
The music video consist of different locations, the locations vary throughout the music video. The first location shown was the music room
where the piano was used. Next was the studio which was a black back drop and helped to show our simplicity of our video, the black
background helped to emphasise the artists and didnāt take away the audienceās attention from the artist. Another location was the dance
studio which is where the artist would use her time to be alone and stress free. Finally a house was used for the arguing scenes between the
boyfriend and the mistress. This is a domestic setting and connotes their feelings, which is a convention of the music video.
Sound
The music video was non-diegetic because it was a sound track by Delilah called Insecure throughout that was placed on the music video. The
sound is cut in synch with the visuals.
Editing
The music video was simple because in research of Delilah her video are kept really simple and we wanted the audience to understand the
lyrics and the music video so by keeping it simple looked more sophisticated. To split two different shots within the same scene, which is a
motivated shot. A dissolve was used for example, an extreme close up of the artist fingers playing the piano dissolve into a close up of the
artist continuing to play the piano. This helped to make our music video flow well because the song was slow and this cut went really well with
the song. A Jump cut was used of a close up of the artist crying moving onto another shot where she was positioned slightly differently
meaning that she had been there for a while crying. The cutting rate and rhythm synched with the music. Cross cutting between narrative and
performance which is also a motivated cut because it cuts away main action and explains it in a narrative this is shown when the artistās
boyfriend is shown cheating on her with another girl which attracts the audienceās attention.
4. Poster for CD Advert
The poster was created by a combination of original past advertised
artistās posters ideas in research. I looked at artists such
as, Rihanna, Delilah and Ashanti. The photography of the advert was
taken in the dance studio, because the natural effect of the studio as
a background looks effective and helps to give an inside about the
artist which was shown as one of the main locations where the artist
would go to release her stress and be alone. The pose shown by the
artist on my CD advert was influenced by past Poster adverts of the
artist looking away from the camera, such as Rihanna and Delilah. I
think this is effective because it helps to enhance the title of the
song āInsecureā. The image is a long shot of the artist sitting down in
the studio, the fact that the artist is the only person there shows her
facing the themes of loneliness which reflects on the title insecure.
The distressed body language the artist shows, by the artist having
her hand running through her hair and a serious facial expression.
The advert was created in Photoshop the artistsā name āDelilahā is
written in bold, white and capitalised writing having two spaces
between them which looked attractive to the audience when asked
and was influenced from Rihanna āLoudā advert and the layout. The
title āInsecureā is written in the same style as the title just that it has
one space between each letter. The heading āComing July 10 2014ā
helps to inform the audience about the album being released which
is a convention. Also, a small image of the album is written next to it
so it looks visually attractive. At the bottom of the page
āwww.delilahofficial.comā is written in small italics which is an
advertisement for the artist letting the audience have more ways of
contacting the artists. The writing is white because it reflects on the
purity and how fragile the artist is which helps to conclude the title
āInsecureā.
5. The CD
The CD reflects on the music video, artist and the
song, everything is kept simple therefore, I decided to
make the CD design simple so it looks as a completed
package with the other print products. The
background is black and helps to enhance the white
writing. The artist name āDelilahā font is white, bold
and capitalised with one extra space in between each
letter. The title āInsecureā is written in bold
italic, white writing which helps to enhance the title
insecure and the simplicity giving the CD a
professional finish.
Front Cover of the CD
The Front cover is a close up of the artist looking away
from the camera, the close up helps to enhance the
facial expression of the artist. The facial expression
shown looks hurt, the fact that the artists eyes isnāt
focused in the camera shows her hurt and pain that
she is going through. The writing is black bold and
capitalised which is written in a 180 degree
horizontally on the right hand side of the CD front
cover. The idea was created from research ideas of
the āRihanna Loudā CD front cover having the artists
look away from the camera and āDelilah from the
roots upā. The positioning of the lettering was decided
from different initial ideas of the positioning for the
front cover by our audience in the pitch and it was
agreed that this looked the most attractive.
6. Inside Cover of the CD
The Inside cover of the CD is a wide shot of the artist
sitting against the mirror with her reflection on the other
side. I think this image works really well because the
picture splits in half at the mirror line and the reflection
is shown on the side where the CD would be held. In the
image the artist looks stressed in dance studio this is a
clip shown in the music video which is shown when she
spends her time alone and when she is being cheated on
by her boyfriend. The fact of the artistās eyes is close and
you could partially see her face shows her frustration and
insecurity. The song lyrics is written on the left hand side
of the inside on the left of the picture which works well
because it would help the audience to understand the
words more and it doesnāt distract the audience from the
artist.
Back Cover of the CD
The Back cover of the CD is the artist looking down which
is a head and shoulders image idea from the Keyshia Cole
Just like you CD. Even though the artist face is down from
the body language you can see the artist isnāt confident
at this point in time. The title āInsecureā is written at the
top of the back cover in white bold writing which is eye
catching but doesnāt take away the audience attention
away from the artist. On the right hand side is more
information about song writer, producers, website and
barcode the position of the writing is from āRihanna
Loudā and āKeyshia Cole Just like youā.
