The Sexual Content in Angela Carter´S the Bloody Chamber
The Sexual Content in Angela Carter´s "The Bloody Chamber" The Bloody Chamber and Other
Stories, is a selection of fairytales which have been re–written by Angela Carter to place them in the
modern day. Carter has taken seven fairytales whose "latent content" she says were "violently
sexual", (qtd by Robin Sheets, "Pornography Fairy Tales and Feminism" 642). The stories include a
variation of classics fairytales such as "Bluebeard", "Beauty and the Beast" and "Little Red Riding
Hood" with sometimes more than one version of the same original tale, for example "Wolf–Alice"
and "The Company of Wolves". In re–writing these fairy tales Carter has given the new versions a
specifically sexual content and focuses on the female protagonist, ... Show more content on

Therefore, it can be argued that rather than being subjected to this act, the presence of consent
transforms this into an act of erotica. This could be an example of which Makinen describes as
Carter re–writing the old tales by playing with the earlier misogynistic version, (Makinen 24). As
mentioned earlier Sheets attempts to brand Carter as a "new Juliette" or "new Justine", but in the end
her argument is inconclusive and cannot decide on one particular side of the fence for the writer. In
comparison, Carter refers to Lovelace as someone who has been "sexually exploited by men",
(Carter, Shaking a Leg 55). Carter makes it blatantly clear in this article that she is against
pornography, not because of the acts that take place but because of the oppression of women. She
describes Lovelace as someone who lives in a world dictated by men, she has learned her technique
from men and although it is a world of sex, the sex itself has been reduced to what Carter calls a
"geometric intersection of parts", (Carter, Shaking a Leg 56). Carter compares what Lovelace is
doing to that of what takes place in a Brothel. She comments that "our society generally denies the
prostitute both appreciation and the opportunity to exercise particular sexual virtuosity", and
ironically confirms that "Lovelace is no prostitute", (Carter, Shaking a Leg 55). Carter portrays
Lovelace as what this writer

Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roche Gilbert Du Motier
Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roche Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette was born in 1757. At a very
young age Mr. Lafayette became a very wealthy orphan after his parents passing; his father at two
years old and mother at twelve. When the young wealthy orphan turned fourteen years of age he
decided he would join the Royal Army and at the age of 16 married into one of the wealthiest
families in France marrying Marie Adrienne Francoise de Noailles. When he turned eighteen years
old he found himself at a dinner where he met the Duke of Gloucester who spoke with much
compassion regarding the trials the colonies were facing. Hoping to keep his plans a secret from the
King whom he knows would be completely against his plans; Mr. Lafayette reveals to a close friend
Comte de Broglie his plans of a better life far away in the United States. After learning of his
friend's plans to travel to the Americas Comte de Broglie introduced Mr. Lafayette to the Baron
Johan De Kalb who also had travel plans to the U.S. and after delays and a few written agreements
from Silas Deane with promises they would be commissioned major generals they set off across the
Atlantic. After arriving to the United States he and several other French officers volunteered to aid
the Americans after learning of the difficulties involved with their efforts to gain independence. In

The Marquis Of Revolutions : The French Revolution
The Marquis of Revolutions
The American revolution is full of many bright and unique people. Without these individuals, the
war could have had a more negative outcome. The Marquis de Lafayette is one that the colonies
could not have spared at their fragile time in history. His dedication to the nation remains unrivaled
to this day.
The Marquis de Lafayette was born in Chavaniac, France on September the sixth, 1757. He was
given the name Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roche Gilbert du Montier. He was born into a family of
wealth and nobility (History.org). He was left with the title of Marquis de Lafayette at the early age

(Biography).
After the British were retreating from Pennsylvania, Washington commanded that General Lee take
his troops and follow the British and engage in battle. Lafayette desire to be placed back into combat
and play a larger role in the revolution. Lafayette implored Washington to give him command of
Charles Lee 's battalion. Washing declared that Lafayette would have to ask Lee for his position, Lee
seeing the mission as a death wish, quickly gave Lafayette his office. After Lafayette was showing
signs of being a great leader, Lee became afraid of the judgement congress would pass on him,
claiming that a younger and inexperienced leader would be victorious and he would be branded as
inept to be a commander and a coward. Lee set out to gain his previous position , begging Lafayette
to give him back his original office. Lafayette, being a generous man gave Lee back his command.
However, Lafayette was given the position back after Washington caught Lee retreating instead of
fighting. Lafayette charged into battle, not questioning Washington 's commands. His name grew for

Sadomasochism Essay
Sadomasochism Sadomasochism is a sexually deviant behavior that is practiced by many people
within today's society. It is the combination of two paraphilias, sadism and masochism, which are
usually always linked together. An occasional mild or light form of sadomasochism (or S& M for
short), is considerably common among the general population. Many people often enjoy being
mildly dominant or submissive during lovemaking. They believe that it makes the experience more
enjoyable. But when S&M becomes the dominating feature of a person's sexuality, that is when he
or she is considered deviant. Unlike other paraphilias, sadomasochism includes a large population of
women as well as men. They are nearly equally balanced in ... Show more content on

Hypoxyphilia is a fairly common practice where a person chooses to enhance their sexual arousal by
voluntarily depriving himself or herself of oxygen. In order to become deprived of oxygen, people
usually use plastic bags, rope, or their partner's hands to choke their partner once consent is given.
This practice is dangerous and can possibly even result in a tragic death (Rathus, Nevid, &Fichner–
Rathus, p545–546). Masochism's counterpart, sadism, is the complete opposite for many reasons.
Sadism is a parphilia, which is characterized by the association of sexual satisfaction with the
infliction of pain or humiliation onto others. The term sadism refers to a French author and
philosopher, Marquis de Sade (1740––1814). Marquis de Sade wrote stories of people who became
sexually aroused by inflicting pain or humiliation on others. Some of his best known works are
Justine (published in 1791) and Juliette (published in 1797). A sadist receives sexual gratification by
role–playing. They usually play the authority figure who inflicts pain, humiliates, disciplines, and
plays master to another person (Ernulf&Innala, p637). Most sadists hurt and humiliate willing
partners who are usually masochists. A small minority of sadists may even attempt to stalk and
attack their unwilling victims. This is a very dangerous and harmful to its participants. In fact,
Sigmund Freud wrote extensively on sadism. In his research, he recognized its existence in the
individual and

Friendship In Richard Junger's 'Tribe'
We all have something or someone that we cherish more than anything else. And as life continues
those things gain more value and become things that you would cause harm to yourself to obtain or
maintain possession of. Wouldn't you risk everything even if it meant only a chance of maintaining
your way of life and your pursuit of happiness? Junger thinks otherwise as one of his bigger claims
in his novel, Tribe, states that we won't find the answer to the question above, throughout the entire
course of our lives. Junger misses the target with this claim, our American communities value
friendship and comradery. Would you not risk your life for your friends? Your family? Our

One of these is our natural feeling of empathy. Our minds naturally put us in someone else's shoes,
allowing us to simulate how someone feels so we can relate and feel entitled to assist that person.
Catherine Belzung from the Universitè Francois Rabelais Tours wrote, "When we see a child crying,
the urge to help him and to comfort him comes to us spontaneously. We understand what he is
experiencing, and feel in us something of his sadness, his distress: this is what we call empathy. This
sense of the other is the fruit of our evolutionary history and is hardwired in our biology". This
defeats the point Junger was trying to make when he was discussing the "brotherhood of pain"
(Junger 54). A horrific earthquake leveled Yungay, Chile and the survivors had to ban together to
survive till help arrived and "As soon as relief flights began delivering aid to the area, class
divisions returned and the sense of brotherhood disappeared. The modern world had arrived"
(Junger 55). Did the "brotherhood of pain" develop because of a disaster or is it something more
complex than that? If we go by what Belzung says, then that brotherhood was always there. The
"brotherhood of pain" wasn't developed, it was

Fatherhood In The Descendants
In the course of the film, King starts off as a solely involved in work, but when King gets word of
Elizabeth's mishap, King recognizes he will have to become a single father to his daughters
Alexandra and Scottie. According to Marquis de Sade, the ideology of fatherhood is, "the notion that
a child is "born of the father's blood" and only incidentally of a mother's body" (Lacquer, 209).
Moreover, fatherhood is not constructed on significant facts, but also on political and social
background therefore, the philosophy of fatherhood is socially constructed. In The Descendants,
King is the biological father of Alexandra and Scottie, which makes King, "responsible for
supporting "his" children" (Lacquer, 213). After watching the film, it is clear to the audience that

one to be responsible and respectful. Secondly, King supports both Alexandra and Scottie as they

her wellbeing. Furthermore, King alongside the doctors, help explain to Scottie what is to happen to
Elizabeth and King nurtures Scottie to support her. Moreover, to the bigger picture, King supports
Alexandra and Scottie by giving them a home to live in, food to eat, and drives them to wherever
they go. Lastly, as a single father, King is expected to set a good example for his children. An
example of King setting a good example for his children is when King and Alexandra go to confront
Speer. Instead of acting out in physical violence, King decides to swear at Speer before going any
further with his intentions. Although this is not what the ideal parent would say in front of their
child, it is nothing that Alexandra has not said herself before as seen earlier in the

United States Marine Corps: The Spark of My Life
Ever since I can remember I have admired the way Mother Nature conducts herself in that
monumental struggle called life. At the very moment in which the spark of life ignites everything
has an even chance to make it, or fail. And so it was with the United States Marine Corps in what
proved to be a long hot summer for South Carolina, in the year 1966 Anno Domini. Just as Mother
Nature lets the weak and infirm fall by the wayside so did that great bastion of the US Marine
Corps, our appointed Drill Instructor, for he did not tolerate by even one degree, or part thereof, any
form of weakness, nor failure. In his mind it was either live or die in that black or white military
thinking, where shades of grey do not exist. Our Drill Instructor was not a reformer, nor was he in
any way interested in the usage of neither psychology nor any other, as he called them, "Goddamn
highfalutin college boy theories" as a process in the training of Marine recruits. He was of the old
school era being a hard, intolerant, and rigid man, who by at times unwarranted force blasted a door
open to gain entry then invaded a room with his presence like a grenade going off! It was claimed,
possibly true, that the average 1960's Drill instructor was born with a book nestling within his skull's
cavity, as an alternative to a brain. Had this presumed book been a wide spectrum encyclopedia of
intricate knowledge, well then, it would have been a wondrous thing indeed. Unfortunately, the book

Sexual Components In Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber
Throughout the literature we have read in this class, several books and short stories have had subtle
sexual components. In Angela Carter's "The Bloody Chamber," there are several important themes
and characteristics that help give the reader the ability to understand the actions of both the narrator
and The Marquis, but sex and it's relation to power drives each character's actions and emotions. For
the Marquis, he finds all the power in the relationship by exemplifying sadistic behavior, constantly
mocking and ridiculing the narrator, and ultimately looking to find satisfaction in her pain and
potential death. The narrator parallels the Marquis' sadism with masochism, often finding
satisfaction and taking comfort in the pain that he causes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The fact that this is the interpretation of sadomasochism that Angela Carter chose to represent is
important because although the book is set during a time period when feminism was not yet
prevalent in the world, "The Bloody Chamber" was written after women's suffrage, in 1979. As soon
as ten years after the short story was published several works were also published that went against
the Freudian model of sadomasochism. In Jessica Benjamin's, The Bonds of Love, Benjamin
discusses the idea that women can actually control their own subordination, therefore making the
"passive" partner equally as dominant as the aggressor, which gets rid of the notion that the
dominant partner is always male. In "The Bloody Chamber," we only see the young girl as someone
who allows herself to gain no control over the power dynamic regarding the couple's relationship in
general. In fact, the only time we see the narrator stand up for herself, or even respond to the
Marquis' comments towards her, is at the very end of the story when she is stalling her death with
the hope that her mother will

Essay on Marquis de Sade: Madman or Genius
The Marquis de Sade was a controversial writer from the Enlightenment period. His works were
highly controversial at the time although he did acquire some sort of a cult following. The Marquis
de Sade uses a variety of techniques in his writing to great effect. The passage being analysed is an
extract from The Philosophy of the Bedroom published in 1795.
Throughout the passage the style of writing comes across as quite argumentative and analytical, yet
the content and his ideas, at the time of writing, would have been quite outrageous. He offers to `...
analyse modesty...' (p. 131) giving the impression that he will go about the whole business in
something of a scientific way. However, the extremeness of his ideas makes one wonder ... Show

Throughout the passage de Sade uses quite dramatic language to engage the reader. There is talk of
freedom and captivity, and of demolishing amongst other dramatic words. It is quite captivating to
read and you get caught up not necessarily in what he is saying, but how he is saying it. At the same
time you can't help but absorb even a little of what de Sade is trying to convey. This technique
would have been quite helpful to de Sade as the church was still a highly respected and perhaps
feared body at the time, yet he attacks it. However, readers may put up with such scandalous ideas
as he wrote about them in such an exciting and engaging manner.
There is also a use of repetition in the Marquis de Sade's passage, which serves to emphasis and
highlight his points. Words like extinguish and vent appear in the passage on occasion. These words
seem to conjure up images and ideas of extreme heat, in de Sade's view probably caused by sexual
passion. He urges people to `...vent on the objects...' (p. 132) and basically not to bottle things up.
Heated and passionate language is often used in what may be an attempt to arouse the audience. It
also draws attention to de Sade's preoccupation with sex.
The words lusts and desires are also repeated on occasion, drawing attention to the erotic nature of
the passage. This emphasises the point that de Sade is trying to make about sexual attraction being
natural. By constantly using those words we get the sense that these

The Castle Of Otranto And The Black Cat
One common aspect of gothic literature is diving into a dark side of the world through different
categories such as the supernatural. There are many advantages and disadvantages by taking a
journey on the evil or dark side. However, the disadvantage's overcome the advantages by a long
shot. One disadvantage is shown in "The Castle of Otranto" and "The Black Cat," is the conclusion
of death. Another disadvantage in taking a dark journey is by sending a character into madness as
seen in Quills. The final disadvantage in taking a dark journey is sending a character into a terrible
outcome such as in "Adventures of the German Student" and in "The Black Cat." One disadvantage
in taking a dark and evil journey is the conclusion of death as seen in "The Castle of Otranto," and
"The Black Cat." In "The Castle of Otranto," the supernatural aspect of the novel is a large part of
the purpose of the book. However, the supernatural in this book does not benefit a character named

wife, he hid her body inside of the wall in his cellar. However, the police still showed up to his

Paranormal Sentimental Fiction In Horace Walpole's The...
This section will investigate the history and advancement behind paranormal sentimental fiction.
Paranormal sentimental fiction had its beginnings in the eighteenth century. An early noticeable
novel in this class was The Castle of Otranto composed by Horace Walpole. Walpole began an
artistic development somewhere down in riddle that increased quick drama and various imitators.
He is by and by for the most part associated with Strawberry Hill, the home he worked in
Twickenham, South–West London where he resuscitated the Gothic type a few decades before his
Victorian successors, and for his Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto.
The novel distributed in 1764 is regularly thought as the primary gothic novel, beginning an artistic
kind which would turn out to be exceptionally mainstream in the later eighteenth century and mid
nineteenth century. In this manner, Walpole, by augmentation, is apparently the antecedent to such
creators as Charles Maturin, Ann Radcliffe, Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe and Daphne du Maurier.
In the introduction of the second release, Walpole makes a heuristic for perusing the novel which
without a doubt changes the way perusers are to see the novel until its end. He claims to blend the
new and old types of sentiment. The "old" sentiment is what is presently considered pre–novel
exposition – a principle component of such writing is their incredible style. There is enchantment,
the otherworldly is bottomless and they are absolutely mind boggling. The type of the "new"
sentiment is the thing that the books of the eighteenth century, when Walpole was composing, would
ordinarily have resembled. These books were reasonable; they were made to portray occasions and
individuals as they truly were.
Walpole at that point, by attempting to blend these two classes, makes something new – something
genuinely 'novel'. He makes fabulous situations like protective caps tumbling from the sky, strolling
pictures, and so on and puts as far as anyone knows genuine individuals into these situations and lets
them to act in a "genuine" way. In doing as such, he viably enables fiction to develop in ways that it
would some way or another have not possessed the capacity to. Walpole presents many set–pieces
that

Pros And Cons Of Banned Literature And Literary Canon
Banned Literature and Literary Canon Voltaire's work "Essay on tolerance" quotes "I disapprove of
what you say, but will defend unto death your right to say it." This makes me to think about banned
literature and censoring various texts by government due to multiple reasons embedded in text such
as political, sexual, religious, language, violence, criminal matter, social grounds etc. Simon During
in his essay " Literature– Nationalism's other? The Case for revision" is propagating state
sponsorship, tradition, culture and subjectivity shaping our literary canon, but censoring valuable
text on the basis of some individual's or group's perception or the partiality practiced by state, which
is only beneficial to the people in governance cannot be just, when we have right to express and

In Latin 'censere' means to 'appraise or estimate, and to express an opinion'. Censor term is linked to
the ancient Rome, where censors were some high ranking magistrates who were recruited for public
morality. Historical reference of banning any literary piece can be traced back to China's Qin
dynasty 213. B.C. Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi destroyed all the books about Confucianism to
maintain his political power. In 499, papal index was published on books to be read. In 13th century,
Philosophers and theologians such as Marsilius of Padua and John Wiclef were stopped from
writing. With the invention of printing press in 15th century censorship increased. Mogens Laerke in

Analysis Of De Sade 's ' The Misfortunes Of Virtue '
Whether or not you accede with the themes in Marquis De Sade's "Misfortunes of Virtue", there is
no doubt his works are some of the most inciting to have ever been constructed. Although Marquis
debates several beliefs in his works, he focuses on one in "The Misfortunes of Virtue" that seems
shaky. The theory of Vice versus Virtue in the words of De Sade has no logical aspect to it, at least
to a "down to earth human being". De Sade once said," In order to know virtue, we must first
acquaint ourselves with vice." De Sade's conception of vice and virtue is nowhere near what we
perceive it to be. Though, through the utilization of multiple characters, his neutral stance and
erroneous logic, we as readers can sift through the differences and visually perceive the authentic
meaning of vice and virtue by using common day human logic and experiences to construct a more
up to date version of De Sade's "Vice and Virtue". Throughout De Sade's "Misfortunes of Virtue" his
writing is meant to have a neutral stance and come off in a way that De Sade lives vicariously
through the characters in order to display his beliefs. With his characters, De Sade argues the theory
of Vice versus Virtue and attempts to make the example that there simply is no difference between
the two. De Sade believes "There is only human kind's selfish goal of self–preservation and seeking
pleasure". According to Webster's dictionary, virtue is defined as: the moral excellence of a person.

It was not until around 1960 that academics like Robert Hume rose to its defence. (Maybe its
renewed popularity was something to do with the very unique socio–political situation in the 1960s
echoing a the unique situation of the late eighteenth century, the heyday of the genre.) Since then
there has been a deluge of commentary which has elevated the genre to a critical and scholarly
favourite.
It is often said that one of the unifying features of Romanticism is its intentional political relevance.
Much of the canonical Romantic literature is inspired or informed by socio–political events. We
need only look at Blake's work or key poems by "second generation" Romantics like Shelley's Ode
to the West Wind or The Mask of Anarchy to verify this.
The same is true of Romantic Gothic which arose around that unique period in European history
posthumously defined by the French Revolution but significant for its trans–European massive
cultural and social upheaval indicated in part by repeated rioting in Britain (Lowe, vii) and a
widespread clamour for various reforms. Victor Sage writes, "English Gothick of the eighteenth
century is seen as a collective symptom of political pressure felt all over Europe."

It executes Bataille's need to express through his writings what could not be contained by the
cultural system within which he lived and worked, and it expresses his need to recognize the
existence of what the system cannot contain––the vision of that other eye out of which he looks at
the world. Thus rather than dismiss this text as juvenile or adolescent writing, readers should be
aware of it as an early declaration of identity formation, one affected by actual events in his life and,
although overwhelmingly privileging his sexual obsessions, one which contains nevertheless the
core of his thinking.
In Bataille's profession of librarianship, cataloging or classification of material becomes obsessive to
the extent that every item within a collection must have a named place or it cannot have a place in
the collection, for only by being inserted into a named placed within a system can an object be

To start, Jean–Paul Marat was an important figure in the French Revolution because of his tactful
writing style. The title of his Newspaper that was published during the duration of the French

The opening line on Marat/Sade posters read, "We wants our rights and we don't care how. We want

equally crimson knife from which blood drips. Ever since its first English–language production, in
1964, Peter Weiss' play has proved a confronting experience for audiences, and Barry French's
production at the New Theatre does not disappoint. A play–within–a–play written by the infamous

Immediately afterwards she is seen calling for Simmone, her attendant and lover to calm her itching

her physical handicaps serve as a reminder that her character is merely an extension of Sade's
writing and any further personal action requires his "permission". In contrast, Sade often remained
silent save for his occasional polarizing arguments with Marat which solidified his position as a
creator rather than just an another character. Furthermore, his ability to physically pace and project a
louder presence in contrast to Marat within the performance space highlights an another aspect of
power separation between the two central characters.
I believe that such displays of power inequality amongst characters such as Sade and Marat could be
further explored through the cage like setting stated earlier. Upon entering the intimate yet slightly
claustrophobic theatre, the audience and I were faced with a unique and privileged seating
arrangement where three rows of seating surrounded a central metal cage. The cage is reminiscent of
a prison compound with high iron fences that have wrapped around the stage except for a single

Marquis de Layafette
Marquis de Lafayette Marie–Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de La Fayette, Marquis de La
Fayette, a wealthy French nobleman, played a quietly prominent role in America's struggle for
independence from the British. La Fayette's unwavering dedication to the pursuit of liberty, his skill
as military officer, his ability to secure vital resources, and his impressive connections to the French
Royal family and other key players of this era made him an invaluable asset in the American
Revolution, and a significant piece of the French Revolution.

In fact, the bond was so strong, that at the Battle of Valley Forge in the winter of 1777, when a
cluster of jealous officers interested in trying to have a sentiment developed against Washington to
have Congress relieve him of the command of the Continental Army, they were unable to gain the
support of Lafayette, who in turn wrote a long letter to Washington in which he pledged his loyalty
to the General. Washington replied to Lafayette in a letter that was marked by his sincere
appreciation. In due course the proposed scheme of the few officers failed, as it was doomed to fail
from the beginning. The soldiers and officers at Valley Forge were fiercely loyal to their
commander, and the members of Congress realized that Washington was a strong and patriotic
leader.
Following the harsh and bitter winter in Valley Forge, Lafayette kept the colonists' spirits high and
burnished his credentials as an intelligent leader whilst helping to draw more French resources to the
colonial side. In May 1778, he outsmarted the British soldiers sent to capture him at Bunker Hill–

to force a stalemate. Lafayette repeatedly traveled back and forth to France to press Louis XVI for
more aid, and in return he assumed increased military responsibility upon his return to battle. As

The Persecution And Assassination Of Jean Paul Marat
In The Persecution and Assassination of Jean–Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the
Asylum of Charenton under the Direction of the Marquis De Sade, Peter Weiss placed a historic
revolutionary setting inside of a chaotic insane asylum. Sex and violence dominate revolution,
madness blends with reason, and political ideologies battle head–to–head while the plot unfolds.
Marat/Sade focuses on a play authored by the Marquis de Sade inside of the play itself. Weiss,
writing in the voice of Sade, could not ignore the sexual perversions of the historical figure, which
allowed for the shocking violence and sexualization that can be found within the play. Under the
inflated political rhetoric among the two leading ideologists, Jean–Paul Marat and the Marquis de
Sade, the story is one about the French Revolution. Specifically, Marat/Sade tells the story of the
murder of Marat by Charlotte Corday.
Sade's characterization of Corday as the sexualized female begins with the Herald's introduction of
her. His description predominately includes her physical features. Her "phenomenally
pulchritudinous" appearance includes stylish shoes and a cloth around her neck. Only a thin veil
covers her otherwise exposed breasts. These images appear in the first introduction of Corday and
create conflict for the woman portraying her, as well as affect Sade's character of Corday in her
carrying out of the plot to kill Marat. However, the effect on the latter is not a negative one. The

One of them is the theme of power and objectification. The sadistic pictures that the Marquis

Influenced by the writings of the Marquis de Sade, Carter illustrates his idea that sex is often
inextricably linked with violence. In his Bloody Chamber the Marquis has not only a collection of
violent pornography and but this is also the place where he tortures his wives. He finds pleasure in
violence; he is in love withthe pain he causes to them.
The bloody chamber is a place of both violence and enlightenment, as the the heroine discovers the
true nature of her husband's desires and her own inevitable fate.
The Marquis represents the dominant scopic position within patriarchal society: the active, gazing

objects: erotic photographs, pornography etc.

The Baastille : Summary : Storming Of The Bastille
Storming of the Bastille
On July 14th 1789, an angry mob stormed the Bastille, a medieval fortress in the center of Paris. The
sparsely guarded Bastille had been used as an armory and political prison to represent royal
authority. After a standoff that lasted several hours, the people of Paris had gotten into the Bastille,
trampling the guards and killing the governor. The fortress was claimed by the citizens and was
eventually ordered to be destroyed by the new Paris Commune. The seizure of the Bastille was seen
as a symbolic victory; the revolutionaries viewed the structure as a representation of the monarchy's
abusive power. Its fall is considered the turning point of the French Revolution.
The Bastille has a history dating back to the mid to late 1300s. It was built to house a garrison of
Charles V's soldiers. The fortress and its garrison were instituted to fend off the English raiders on
the eastern border of Paris during the Hundred Years' War. The fortress soon became one of the
largest structures in Paris when it was expanded upon in the early 1400s. It imposingly hovered over
a working–class district, Faubourg Saint–Antoine, that was notorious for its rowdiness and
sometimes defiant behavior. A delegation of royal troops was housed there permanently to both
guard the city walls, and maintain order inside them. As time passed, the structure earned the name
Bastille, a common French term used to describe a fortress at the exit of a city.

After immersing in the selected readings for this week reaction paper, I found myself with mixed
emotions regarding the state of enlightenment. I feel as if this theme is something that had started

Who Is The Marquis's Beastliness In 'The Bloody Chamber'
In The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter, the Marquis has a form of beastliness that is quite
unique. The Marquis is a rich business man and is the husband of heroine who plays the piano. He
married three previous wives, but killed them. When the heroine arrived at the palace, the Marquis
took her to his bedroom that had white lilies all over the floor and by the bedside. The white lilies
symbolized her purity and virginity that she was going to lose when they had sex. After they had
sex, the Marquis fell asleep, then awoke to the sound of the phone ringing. The Marquis received a
call and had to travel to America for his business. The heroine, who was given the keys to all the
rooms in his castle, was told by the Marquis himself that she should not enter into one certain room.

The Marquis De Sades Attitude Toward Women
The Marquis de Sade's Attitude Towards Women
The Marquis de Sade was an author in France in the late 1700s. His works were infamous in their
time, giving Sade a reputation as an adulterer, a debaucher, and a sodomite. One of the more
common misrepresentations concerning Sade was his attitude toward women. His attitude was
shown in his way of life and in two of his literary characters, Justine and Julliette.
The Marquis de Sade was said to be the first and only philosopher of vice because of his atheistic
and sadistic activities. He held the common woman in low regard. He believed that women dressed
provocatively because they feared men would take no notice of them if they were naked. He cared
little for forced sex. Rape is not a crime, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He urges women to copulate as actively as they can, so that, "powered by their hitherto
untapped sexual energy they will be able to fuck their way into history, and, in doing so, change
it" (Carter 27).
Women see themselves in the reflection form Sade's looking glass of misanthropy. Critics say that
Sade offers male fantasies about women in great variety, along with a number of startling insights.
He is said to put pornography in the service of women (Carter 36).
The Justine series, consisting of six editions, was one of the most infamous and well known series
written by Sade. While the series had several editions, the storyline remained basically the same
throughout, though becoming more verbose in each edition.
Two characters emerge from the Justine novels: Justine and Juliette, who are sisters orphaned at an
early age. These two characters represent the opposite poles of womanhood in Sade's mind. Justine
is the innocent, naive type who gets mistreated throughout her life. Juliette is Sade's ideal woman,
being uninhibited in her sexual conduct and in her life, murdering and copulating at whim. She,
naturally, does well in life (Lynch 41–42).

Over the course of United States History the country has engaged in several wars. Some of these

dubious and obscure reasons such as stopping the spread of communism, "protecting America's

An Analysis Of Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication Of The...
The Age of Enlightenment encouraged writers to break away from conventional thought and express
their ideas and opinions through reasoning. Mary Wollstonecraft's "A Vindication of the Rights of
Women" and Marquis de Sade's "Philosophy in the Bedroom" examine the conventional norms in
their respective author's contemporary societies. In both accounts, Wollstonecraft and Sade prescribe
the path humanity should take in order to improve the human condition. Marquis de Sade develops
an unconventional philosophy by claiming that cruelty is nature's most basic quality. He supports the
idea that humans are born with the notion of cruelty and thus, should embrace their destructive

However, she focuses on the importance and value of education, believing that "the most perfect
education...is such an exercise of the understanding as is best calculated to strengthen the body and

reason was a virtue since it empowered the mind to think freely and independently. Reason allowed
one to truly express his or her ideas. The best way to cultivate such reasoning was to become
educated. Thus, both men and women should be educated for the betterment of society as a whole
since both sexes would then be able to contribute a broader range of ideas. However, the general
consensus amongst her contemporaries in 18th century England was that women were "more
artificial, weak characters...and, consequently, more useless members of society" (Wollstonecraft

considered as housewives, not expected to contribute to society or stand out in anyway. Therefore,
women did not have the same amount of access to a proper education as men did since they were
not expected to be involved with forming their own reasoning and opinions. As a result, women only
learned what they perceived and experienced from the world, left to play "guess–work" rather than

Essay about Romanticism
Romanticism,
Romanticism, in a way, was a reaction against rigid Classicism, Rationalism, and Deism of the
eighteenth century. Strongest in application between 1800 and 1850, the Romantic Movement
differed from country to country and from romanticist to romanticist. Because it emphasized change
it was an atmosphere in which events occurred and came to affect not only the way humans thought
and expressed them, but also the way they lived socially and politically (Abrams, M.H. Pg. 13).
"Romanticism emphasized the individual, the subjective, the irrational, the imaginative, the
personal, the spontaneous, the emotional, the visionary, and the transcendental," (Thompson, E.P.

(Thompson, E.P. Pgs 33–34) The first phase of Romantic Movement was in Germany, which was
marked by the innovations in both content and literary style and by a preoccupation with the

national movement was Germany's. The Germans rebelled not only against Napoleonic rule, but
also against the century old upper hand of French civilization. They rebelled not only against the
French armies, but also against the philosophy of the Age of Enlightenment. "The years of the
French Revolution and Napoleon were, for Germany, the year of it greatest Cultural Efflorescence."

In the nineteenth century, the Germans came to be widely regarded as intellectual leaders, like the

The War Experience in Italian Film Essay
The War Experience in Italian Film
The experience of war as it is presented throughout the history of Italian cinema is a uniquely
composite display of historical reverence and cultural consecration. An analysis of this experience in
all of its manifestations can be discerned from the evaluation of one or several works from the post–
World
War II period within the corpus of the Italian cultural signification. It follows from this approach
that the essence of the results of this analysis will then represent an appreciative grasp of the
aforementioned corpus. The war experience in Italian film can be succinctly considered through a

The film, which contains moments ranging from dark comedy to poignant melodrama, also relies on
stock documentary footage and intimate battle sequences to supplement the enthralling story. The
narrative progression of the film carries through effortlessly, and is accompanied by rhetorically
inventive dialogue and character associations that operate on the allegorical level. For instance, one
scene in which a group of Nazi officials murder a sheep operates metaphorically to link Christianity
to communism while simultaneously equating the fascists with butchers of the innocent. (Forgacs 9–

Concomitant with this method of scrutinizing the film, many of the characters' names are subject to

Peter Pilgrim. He is associated, by virtue of his name, with the side of good and in the dominion of
religion represents a modern analog of St. Peter (A martyr who was put to death during the Roman

A hero is commonly defined by actions which help and aid others. Notable heroes sacrifice their

Giovanni in Mozart's Don Giovanni does not fit the conventional idea of a hero. Although he acts
with courage in odd circumstances and appears to adapt radical Enlightenment values, he does not
act in the interest of others. As an 18th century womanizer, or libertine, all sacrifices made by
Giovanni throughout the plot are to serve his own impulses. Therefore, Don Giovanni is a character
that is more equivalent to a stubborn child than a moral hero.

accurate portrayal of her frustration with his actions. The comedy of Leoporello's Catalogue Aria is
not what many would consider the admirable description of a hero. Behind Giovanni's back, the
jokes about his extensive history are not done so with admiration. Instead, the comedy enhances the
absurdity and childlike obsession within his

Personal Narrative: Kayla
Society has a problem. We, as human beings, tend to view issues in black and white. There is good,
and there is evil. Criminals are always inherently malignant and cannot be redeemed. We revere
Gandhi as a saint for his nonviolent protests against Britain's rule in India, despite his racist view of
North Africans. I too held this view of morality before I encountered the captivating young lady by
the name of Kayla. What drew me to Kayla initially was her adorable appearance. Silky blonde hair
adorned with bows and cute dresses made her look like a charming little Alice in Wonderland.
Halfway through our sophomore year, I was able to gather up the courage to ask this cute porcelain
doll out to ice cream, figuring that I should learn a little ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I couldn't wrap my head around how anyone could think this way. What made her believe that it was
okay to disregard other people's emotions? Later in our relationship, after she agreed to start dating
me "for the benefits," we found out that she had antisocial personality disorder, a condition in which
one displays egocentrism, disregard for right and wrong, and an inability to process emotions
normally. However, this didn't cause me to dismiss her abnormal thoughts as a result of an
impairment of pathways between the amygdala and the frontal lobe. Instead, it made me realize that
just because we think something is wrong, doesn't mean that we can label someone as evil for doing
it, as demonstrated by Kayla – her skewed morals don't make her evil. Surely, there is more behind
morality than we think. As Marquis de Sade of France pondered, "Is it for you, mankind, to
pronounce on what is good and what is evil?" He was not the most morally upstanding person, but
he had a point. As humans, we are in no place to judge each other's morals, as morality is relative. I
feel as though keeping this in mind allows me to keep an open mind to people's opinions, which is a
profoundly useful skill for social interaction in college, thus delineating my transition into being a

Allegory Of Mrs. Dubose
Jared Crane Mid Term Essay Intro to Literature 2200 Instructor: Russell Burrows October 4, 2017 A
close reading of Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose. Mrs. Dubose is an allegory that is found throughout
To Kill A Mocking Bird. People cannot be judged on first impressions; if we scratch the surface
we'll find that they are better or worse than first thought. They may have redeeming qualities or
skeletons in their closets. Mrs. Dubose was first seen as a grouchy, sharp tongued racist who was
steeped in traditionalism. As the story progresses she transforms into a resilient fighter, full of
courage. Scout see's Mrs. Dubose as the mean old lady up the street (39). She refers to her age as
"...close on to a hundred..." (103). When Jem and Scouts fixation on Boo Radley ended and they
wanted to venture downtown, they couldn't avoid Mrs. Dubose's house anymore. They could have
walked around, but it would have added an extra mile to their trip and they had to grow up sometime
(114). Mrs. Dubose is a Southern institution down to her name. The name Dubose has French
origins, it means by or in a wood. The Name Henry is also French, but it has noble origins. The
Normans introduced the name to England and it was used by eight kings, ending with Henry VIII.
Lafayette, another French name, means birch tree and flatterer in England. It's very ironic that a
woman with the last name that

Comparing Dr. Moreau And The Beetle
In two fin de siècle novels, H.G. Wells's The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896) and Robert Marsh's The
Beetle (1897), sadism plays a central role. However, while The Island of Dr. Moreau and The Beetle
both include characters that exemplify sadism, the novels differ greatly in the characters' portrayals
due to the sadistic characters' gender. The sadistic Moreau is presented as Machiavellian tyrant.
However, because Moreau's gender aligns with ideas of gendered sadism, the novel does not portray
him as degenerate, monstrous, nor ambiguous. In contrast, The Beetle tampers with the sadistic
female body, which leads to doubt of her true sex and form and leaves her as an undecidable,
degenerate monstrosity. The sadistic characters' descriptions in The Island of Dr. Moreau and The

A perplexing amalgamation of culture and nature led to the pathologizing of sexual perversion by
19th century "sexologists" (Peakman 1). Richard von Krafft–Ebing first introduced the term 'sadism'
in his book Psychopathic Sexualis (1886). Sadism includes the experience of mental and physical
suffering as pleasurable (Holguin 1285). Later defined as one of the "modern perversions" by
Sigmund Freud, it was traditionally seen as existing within the male domain (Schaffner 182), and as
a type of "male sexual cruelty" (Wayne 542). Furthering Krafft–Ebing's work, Freud suggests that
sadism's "life preserving aggression" in males is natural and biologically determined (Holguin
1286). In contrast, masochism, essentially the opposite of sadism, can be seen as

The Sexual Content in Angela Carter's 'The Bloody Chamber

  • 1. The Sexual Content in Angela Carter´S the Bloody Chamber The Sexual Content in Angela Carter´s "The Bloody Chamber" The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories, is a selection of fairytales which have been re–written by Angela Carter to place them in the modern day. Carter has taken seven fairytales whose "latent content" she says were "violently sexual", (qtd by Robin Sheets, "Pornography Fairy Tales and Feminism" 642). The stories include a variation of classics fairytales such as "Bluebeard", "Beauty and the Beast" and "Little Red Riding Hood" with sometimes more than one version of the same original tale, for example "Wolf–Alice" and "The Company of Wolves". In re–writing these fairy tales Carter has given the new versions a specifically sexual content and focuses on the female protagonist, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, it can be argued that rather than being subjected to this act, the presence of consent transforms this into an act of erotica. This could be an example of which Makinen describes as Carter re–writing the old tales by playing with the earlier misogynistic version, (Makinen 24). As mentioned earlier Sheets attempts to brand Carter as a "new Juliette" or "new Justine", but in the end her argument is inconclusive and cannot decide on one particular side of the fence for the writer. In comparison, Carter refers to Lovelace as someone who has been "sexually exploited by men", (Carter, Shaking a Leg 55). Carter makes it blatantly clear in this article that she is against pornography, not because of the acts that take place but because of the oppression of women. She describes Lovelace as someone who lives in a world dictated by men, she has learned her technique from men and although it is a world of sex, the sex itself has been reduced to what Carter calls a "geometric intersection of parts", (Carter, Shaking a Leg 56). Carter compares what Lovelace is doing to that of what takes place in a Brothel. She comments that "our society generally denies the prostitute both appreciation and the opportunity to exercise particular sexual virtuosity", and ironically confirms that "Lovelace is no prostitute", (Carter, Shaking a Leg 55). Carter portrays Lovelace as what this writer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At a very young age Mr. Lafayette became a very wealthy orphan after his parents passing; his father at two years old and mother at twelve. When the young wealthy orphan turned fourteen years of age he decided he would join the Royal Army and at the age of 16 married into one of the wealthiest families in France marrying Marie Adrienne Francoise de Noailles. When he turned eighteen years old he found himself at a dinner where he met the Duke of Gloucester who spoke with much compassion regarding the trials the colonies were facing. Hoping to keep his plans a secret from the King whom he knows would be completely against his plans; Mr. Lafayette reveals to a close friend Comte de Broglie his plans of a better life far away in the United States. After learning of his friend's plans to travel to the Americas Comte de Broglie introduced Mr. Lafayette to the Baron Johan De Kalb who also had travel plans to the U.S. and after delays and a few written agreements from Silas Deane with promises they would be commissioned major generals they set off across the Atlantic. After arriving to the United States he and several other French officers volunteered to aid the Americans after learning of the difficulties involved with their efforts to gain independence. It is the combination of two paraphilias, sadism and masochism, which are usually always linked together. An occasional mild or light form of sadomasochism (or S& M for short), is considerably common among the general population. Many people often enjoy being mildly dominant or submissive during lovemaking. They believe that it makes the experience more enjoyable. But when S&M becomes the dominating feature of a person's sexuality, that is when he or she is considered deviant. Hypoxyphilia is a fairly common practice where a person chooses to enhance their sexual arousal by voluntarily depriving himself or herself of oxygen. In order to become deprived of oxygen, people usually use plastic bags, rope, or their partner's hands to choke their partner once consent is given. This practice is dangerous and can possibly even result in a tragic death (Rathus, Nevid, &Fichner– Rathus, p545–546). Masochism's counterpart, sadism, is the complete opposite for many reasons. Sadism is a parphilia, which is characterized by the association of sexual satisfaction with the infliction of pain or humiliation onto others. The term sadism refers to a French author and philosopher, Marquis de Sade (1740––1814). Marquis de Sade wrote stories of people who became sexually aroused by inflicting pain or humiliation on others. Some of his best known works are Justine (published in 1791) and Juliette (published in 1797). A sadist receives sexual gratification by role–playing. They usually play the authority figure who inflicts pain, humiliates, disciplines, and plays master to another person (Ernulf&Innala, p637). Most sadists hurt and humiliate willing partners who are usually masochists. A small minority of sadists may even attempt to stalk and attack their unwilling victims. This is a very dangerous and harmful to its participants. In fact, Sigmund Freud wrote extensively on sadism. In his research, he recognized its existence in the individual and ... Catherine Belzung from the Universitè Francois Rabelais Tours wrote, "When we see a child crying, the urge to help him and to comfort him comes to us spontaneously. We understand what he is experiencing, and feel in us something of his sadness, his distress: this is what we call empathy. This sense of the other is the fruit of our evolutionary history and is hardwired in our biology". This defeats the point Junger was trying to make when he was discussing the "brotherhood of pain" (Junger 54). A horrific earthquake leveled Yungay, Chile and the survivors had to ban together to survive till help arrived and "As soon as relief flights began delivering aid to the area, class divisions returned and the sense of brotherhood disappeared. The modern world had arrived" (Junger 55). Did the "brotherhood of pain" develop because of a disaster or is it something more complex than that? Fatherhood In The Descendants In the course of the film, King starts off as a solely involved in work, but when King gets word of Elizabeth's mishap, King recognizes he will have to become a single father to his daughters Alexandra and Scottie. According to Marquis de Sade, the ideology of fatherhood is, "the notion that a child is "born of the father's blood" and only incidentally of a mother's body" (Lacquer, 209). Moreover, fatherhood is not constructed on significant facts, but also on political and social background therefore, the philosophy of fatherhood is socially constructed. Furthermore, King alongside the doctors, help explain to Scottie what is to happen to Elizabeth and King nurtures Scottie to support her. Moreover, to the bigger picture, King supports Alexandra and Scottie by giving them a home to live in, food to eat, and drives them to wherever they go. Lastly, as a single father, King is expected to set a good example for his children. An example of King setting a good example for his children is when King and Alexandra go to confront Speer. At the very moment in which the spark of life ignites everything has an even chance to make it, or fail. And so it was with the United States Marine Corps in what proved to be a long hot summer for South Carolina, in the year 1966 Anno Domini. Just as Mother Nature lets the weak and infirm fall by the wayside so did that great bastion of the US Marine Corps, our appointed Drill Instructor, for he did not tolerate by even one degree, or part thereof, any form of weakness, nor failure. In his mind it was either live or die in that black or white military thinking, where shades of grey do not exist. Our Drill Instructor was not a reformer, nor was he in any way interested in the usage of neither psychology nor any other, as he called them, "Goddamn highfalutin college boy theories" as a process in the training of Marine recruits. He was of the old school era being a hard, intolerant, and rigid man, who by at times unwarranted force blasted a door open to gain entry then invaded a room with his presence like a grenade going off! It was claimed, possibly true, that the average 1960's Drill instructor was born with a book nestling within his skull's cavity, as an alternative to a brain. • 17. Sexual Components In Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber Throughout the literature we have read in this class, several books and short stories have had subtle sexual components. In Angela Carter's "The Bloody Chamber," there are several important themes and characteristics that help give the reader the ability to understand the actions of both the narrator and The Marquis, but sex and it's relation to power drives each character's actions and emotions. For the Marquis, he finds all the power in the relationship by exemplifying sadistic behavior, constantly mocking and ridiculing the narrator, and ultimately looking to find satisfaction in her pain and potential death. The narrator parallels the Marquis' sadism with masochism, often finding satisfaction and taking comfort in the pain that he causes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fact that this is the interpretation of sadomasochism that Angela Carter chose to represent is important because although the book is set during a time period when feminism was not yet prevalent in the world, "The Bloody Chamber" was written after women's suffrage, in 1979. As soon as ten years after the short story was published several works were also published that went against the Freudian model of sadomasochism. In Jessica Benjamin's, The Bonds of Love, Benjamin discusses the idea that women can actually control their own subordination, therefore making the "passive" partner equally as dominant as the aggressor, which gets rid of the notion that the dominant partner is always male. In "The Bloody Chamber," we only see the young girl as someone who allows herself to gain no control over the power dynamic regarding the couple's relationship in general. In fact, the only time we see the narrator stand up for herself, or even respond to the Marquis' comments towards her, is at the very end of the story when she is stalling her death with the hope that her mother will ... • 19. Essay on Marquis de Sade: Madman or Genius The Marquis de Sade was a controversial writer from the Enlightenment period. His works were highly controversial at the time although he did acquire some sort of a cult following. The Marquis de Sade uses a variety of techniques in his writing to great effect. The passage being analysed is an extract from The Philosophy of the Bedroom published in 1795. Throughout the passage the style of writing comes across as quite argumentative and analytical, yet the content and his ideas, at the time of writing, would have been quite outrageous. He offers to `... analyse modesty...' (p. 131) giving the impression that he will go about the whole business in something of a scientific way. There is talk of freedom and captivity, and of demolishing amongst other dramatic words. It is quite captivating to read and you get caught up not necessarily in what he is saying, but how he is saying it. At the same time you can't help but absorb even a little of what de Sade is trying to convey. This technique would have been quite helpful to de Sade as the church was still a highly respected and perhaps feared body at the time, yet he attacks it. However, readers may put up with such scandalous ideas as he wrote about them in such an exciting and engaging manner. There is also a use of repetition in the Marquis de Sade's passage, which serves to emphasis and highlight his points. Words like extinguish and vent appear in the passage on occasion. These words seem to conjure up images and ideas of extreme heat, in de Sade's view probably caused by sexual passion. He urges people to `...vent on the objects...' (p. 132) and basically not to bottle things up. Heated and passionate language is often used in what may be an attempt to arouse the audience. It also draws attention to de Sade's preoccupation with sex. The words lusts and desires are also repeated on occasion, drawing attention to the erotic nature of the passage. This emphasises the point that de Sade is trying to make about sexual attraction being natural. By constantly using those words we get the sense that these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are many advantages and disadvantages by taking a journey on the evil or dark side. However, the disadvantage's overcome the advantages by a long shot. One disadvantage is shown in "The Castle of Otranto" and "The Black Cat," is the conclusion of death. Another disadvantage in taking a dark journey is by sending a character into madness as seen in Quills. • 25. Paranormal Sentimental Fiction In Horace Walpole's The... This section will investigate the history and advancement behind paranormal sentimental fiction. Paranormal sentimental fiction had its beginnings in the eighteenth century. An early noticeable novel in this class was The Castle of Otranto composed by Horace Walpole. Walpole began an artistic development somewhere down in riddle that increased quick drama and various imitators. He is by and by for the most part associated with Strawberry Hill, the home he worked in Twickenham, South–West London where he resuscitated the Gothic type a few decades before his Victorian successors, and for his Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto. The novel distributed in 1764 is regularly thought as the primary gothic novel, beginning an artistic kind which would turn out to be exceptionally mainstream in the later eighteenth century and mid nineteenth century. In this manner, Walpole, by augmentation, is apparently the antecedent to such creators as Charles Maturin, Ann Radcliffe, Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe and Daphne du Maurier. In the introduction of the second release, Walpole makes a heuristic for perusing the novel which without a doubt changes the way perusers are to see the novel until its end. He claims to blend the new and old types of sentiment. The "old" sentiment is what is presently considered pre–novel exposition – a principle component of such writing is their incredible style. There is enchantment, the otherworldly is bottomless and they are absolutely mind boggling. The type of the "new" sentiment is the thing that the books of the eighteenth century, when Walpole was composing, would ordinarily have resembled. These books were reasonable; they were made to portray occasions and individuals as they truly were. Walpole at that point, by attempting to blend these two classes, makes something new – something genuinely 'novel'. He makes fabulous situations like protective caps tumbling from the sky, strolling pictures, and so on and puts as far as anyone knows genuine individuals into these situations and lets them to act in a "genuine" way. In doing as such, he viably enables fiction to develop in ways that it would some way or another have not possessed the capacity to. Walpole presents many set–pieces that ... Pros And Cons Of Banned Literature And Literary Canon Banned Literature and Literary Canon Voltaire's work "Essay on tolerance" quotes "I disapprove of what you say, but will defend unto death your right to say it." This makes me to think about banned literature and censoring various texts by government due to multiple reasons embedded in text such as political, sexual, religious, language, violence, criminal matter, social grounds etc. Simon During in his essay " Literature– Nationalism's other? The Case for revision" is propagating state sponsorship, tradition, culture and subjectivity shaping our literary canon, but censoring valuable text on the basis of some individual's or group's perception or the partiality practiced by state, which is only beneficial to the people in governance cannot be just, when we have right to express and right to speech in our hand to empower us. Analysis Of De Sade 's ' The Misfortunes Of Virtue ' Whether or not you accede with the themes in Marquis De Sade's "Misfortunes of Virtue", there is no doubt his works are some of the most inciting to have ever been constructed. Although Marquis debates several beliefs in his works, he focuses on one in "The Misfortunes of Virtue" that seems shaky. The theory of Vice versus Virtue in the words of De Sade has no logical aspect to it, at least to a "down to earth human being". De Sade once said," In order to know virtue, we must first acquaint ourselves with vice." De Sade's conception of vice and virtue is nowhere near what we perceive it to be. Though, through the utilization of multiple characters, his neutral stance and erroneous logic, we as readers can sift through the differences and visually perceive the authentic meaning of vice and virtue by using common day human logic and experiences to construct a more up to date version of De Sade's "Vice and Virtue". Throughout De Sade's "Misfortunes of Virtue" his writing is meant to have a neutral stance and come off in a way that De Sade lives vicariously through the characters in order to display his beliefs. With his characters, De Sade argues the theory of Vice versus Virtue and attempts to make the example that there simply is no difference between the two. De Sade believes "There is only human kind's selfish goal of self–preservation and seeking pleasure". According to Webster's dictionary, virtue is defined as: the moral excellence of a person. Since then there has been a deluge of commentary which has elevated the genre to a critical and scholarly favourite. The Persecution And Assassination Of Jean Paul Marat In The Persecution and Assassination of Jean–Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton under the Direction of the Marquis De Sade, Peter Weiss placed a historic revolutionary setting inside of a chaotic insane asylum. Sex and violence dominate revolution, madness blends with reason, and political ideologies battle head–to–head while the plot unfolds. Marat/Sade focuses on a play authored by the Marquis de Sade inside of the play itself. Weiss, writing in the voice of Sade, could not ignore the sexual perversions of the historical figure, which allowed for the shocking violence and sexualization that can be found within the play. The sparsely guarded Bastille had been used as an armory and political prison to represent royal authority. After a standoff that lasted several hours, the people of Paris had gotten into the Bastille, trampling the guards and killing the governor. The fortress was claimed by the citizens and was eventually ordered to be destroyed by the new Paris Commune. The seizure of the Bastille was seen as a symbolic victory; the revolutionaries viewed the structure as a representation of the monarchy's abusive power. Its fall is considered the turning point of the French Revolution. The Bastille has a history dating back to the mid to late 1300s. It was built to house a garrison of Charles V's soldiers. The fortress and its garrison were instituted to fend off the English raiders on the eastern border of Paris during the Hundred Years' War. The fortress soon became one of the largest structures in Paris when it was expanded upon in the early 1400s. It imposingly hovered over a working–class district, Faubourg Saint–Antoine, that was notorious for its rowdiness and sometimes defiant behavior. A delegation of royal troops was housed there permanently to both guard the city walls, and maintain order inside them. As time passed, the structure earned the name Bastille, a common French term used to describe a fortress at the exit of a city. During the reign of Louis ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His works were infamous in their time, giving Sade a reputation as an adulterer, a debaucher, and a sodomite. One of the more common misrepresentations concerning Sade was his attitude toward women. His attitude was shown in his way of life and in two of his literary characters, Justine and Julliette. The Marquis de Sade was said to be the first and only philosopher of vice because of his atheistic and sadistic activities. He held the common woman in low regard. He believed that women dressed provocatively because they feared men would take no notice of them if they were naked. He cared little for forced sex. Rape is not a crime, ... He is said to put pornography in the service of women (Carter 36). The Justine series, consisting of six editions, was one of the most infamous and well known series written by Sade. While the series had several editions, the storyline remained basically the same throughout, though becoming more verbose in each edition. Two characters emerge from the Justine novels: Justine and Juliette, who are sisters orphaned at an early age. These two characters represent the opposite poles of womanhood in Sade's mind. The Age of Enlightenment encouraged writers to break away from conventional thought and express their ideas and opinions through reasoning. Mary Wollstonecraft's "A Vindication of the Rights of Women" and Marquis de Sade's "Philosophy in the Bedroom" examine the conventional norms in their respective author's contemporary societies. In both accounts, Wollstonecraft and Sade prescribe the path humanity should take in order to improve the human condition. Marquis de Sade develops an unconventional philosophy by claiming that cruelty is nature's most basic quality. He supports the idea that humans are born with the notion of cruelty and thus, should embrace their destructive instincts. According to him, might is right because "in the state of ... The best way to cultivate such reasoning was to become educated. Thus, both men and women should be educated for the betterment of society as a whole since both sexes would then be able to contribute a broader range of ideas. However, the general consensus amongst her contemporaries in 18th century England was that women were "more artificial, weak characters...and, consequently, more useless members of society" (Wollstonecraft 134). Women were expected to lead domesticated lives and become dependent on men. They were considered as housewives, not expected to contribute to society or stand out in anyway. Therefore, women did not have the same amount of access to a proper education as men did since they were not expected to be involved with forming their own reasoning and opinions.
