Growing up on a small family wheat farm in southwestern Oklahoma, I have experienced the harsh

Animal welfare is looking to decrease the issue of mass production of pork there is also Animal
rights groups, such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), advocate for vegan or
meatless diets. Eating animals, they contend, is cruel (p.47).

Not only are they taught that building things outside are bad, but because of the disappearance of
natural spaces within cities, nature is not as accessible to kids. This leads to what Louv calls,

Fieldwork Paper Spring Hill Community Farm is a family run organic vegetable farm that caters to

Elise Boulding in her article, Women and the Agricultural Revolution, argues that women played a
key role in initiating the Agricultural Revolution. She defines the revolution as happening within
two stages: horticulture and agriculture proper. Women had a prominent role within the earlier form,
horticulture. Horticulture is defined as farming for subsistence only.Women's roles on the farm were

They did much of the planting and gathering, and Boulding states that women probably even
constructed the mud–houses in the early villages. In this horticulture society, children also helped
women. They carryed out many chores on the farm, such as taking care of animals and gathering
grain. These roles would change as farming shifted to agriculture proper.
At horticulture stage, the farming of these early people was for the purpose of providing enough
food for the family. In these farms, women were able to farm the lands without much aid. Instead,
they used simple small hand tools to do the work. However, once the farms grew in size and they
had a surplus of food, they required more help.
Gradually, as the farms grew, there was a shift from merely farming to provide for the family, to
farming for economic profit as well. As a result, Boulding argues that women were no longer the
main workers on the farm. Women continued to help the development of the Agricultural Revolution
despite their role change. Originally, women used digging sticks for gathering, planting, and
growing plants. As the farming purpose changed, however, the tools changed as well.
The plow and animals were used for cultivation, making women less visible on the field.
Yet, women continued to help by creating baskets and discovering pottery, all of which enabled
them to store more grain.

There are many differences between big farms and traditional farms such as environmental issues,
animal waste, antibiotic use, health issues, animal treatment, and economic involvement with their
communities just to name a few. When it comes to animal waste issues, industrial or big farm

Sylvia was sixteen at the time and her mother and father hid her in their local farm, this constant
hiding lead to Albina decided they could no longer remain in Ukraine, which is the beginning of
Sylvia Bojcvuk's pilgrimage to a better life. The Bojcvuk family began by taking a train out of
Ukraine, hoping to go South where both Sylvia's older brother and sister currently resided, but the
Soviet soldiers were blocking passage to the South so they had to go west, leaving behind Sylvia's
brother, Adolf, and sister, Eleanor. Unfortunately, Sylvia was never again reunited with her siblings.
Adolf Bojcvuk later died of brain cancer in the 1980's, and Eleanor Bojcvuk resides in Romania

cows and 700 acres. Spring Walk Farm, the name of which comes from the land and the spring by
which they would have to walk to get to the barn, was established just north of Nashville in the late

Each morning, they never know that the day is going to bring, they may have a plan but, mother
nature is not one to allow that. Many farmers have multiple ventures, for example they could have

The leader of the National Family Farm Coalition, Bill Cristison states, " There needs to be a far
greater understanding in this country about the important role of family farmers in providing for our
nations food supply and food security" (Christison). The truth is family farms do not produce
enough goods to support the demand in the United States. People can't see that we need corporate

Personal Statement On Family Farms
Family farms serve as both a place to live and a place to work and is unique as both a home and a
workplace. Growing up on a cattle farm, with horses and the necessary machinery, I was exposed to
many conditions that have taught me valuable lessons and allowed me to thrive as a young
individual. One of the main reasons that I have been able to thrive under these circumstances is
because of my family members ensuring my safety. My family has always been rigorous about
teaching me how to stay safe from the many dangers on our farm that could leave me vulnerable to

New Zealand has a long farming history and agriculture has been one of the country's largest
economic sectors, with 95 percent of the dairy products being exported contributing to about 30
percent of the world's trade (MAF, 2003). The land reforms which happened between late 19th and
early 20th century emerged a large number of small and medium sized farms for the purpose of
promoting the wealth of the settler society (Hamer, 1988). As a result of the introduction of

There are many anti–corporate faming laws in place that have been around since about the 1930?s
that were originated in Kansas and North Dakota (McDonough, 2003). These laws are intended to
slow down large corporations coming into small communities and pushing out the small, family
operated farms. North Dakota was the first state, with nine other states right behind it. These states
include North Dakota, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Wisconsin and
Nebraska.
In 1932, North Dakota originated its first anti–corporation law. It prohibited any corporation from
farming there. This law seemed to be extreme so it was amended in 1981 stating that there would
only be fifteen or fewer corporate shareholders (www.celdf.org). These laws have inhibited
corporate farming from taking over North Dakota, making it a better place for local agriculture. If
these laws aren?t followed, there are penalties in place to punish the violators with fines up to
$25,000.

Small farms has difficulty selling their products to bigger food companies. For example,

are not getting sold. Unlike larger farms they get contracted because it doesn't cost as much than a

For example," Bigger tractors and machines, chemical weed killers, and artificial fertilizer made it
easier for one farmer to handle" (39). This makes it easier for farmers to work with less people and
have less expenses to make money. Another example is, " It only takes a few weeks of work over a
year to raise five hundred acres of industrial corn. So the farms have gotten bigger, but fewer people
