1. How is pomo media controversial?
What issues would audiences have?
What specific/niche audiences might have a problem with pomo?
-controversy with terms? theories? case studies?
-what did you learn from 'everything is a remix'?
-Baurillard – hyperreality – makes audience feel inadequate because it’s trying
to ‘reproduce’ or aspire to something that is unrealistic
Ev – hairspray (ellnett) + Gucci (aspirational) ….lead into discussion about
people aspiring to be ‘perfect’ = Barbie girl/nicki minaj etc)
+autotuning (miming/autotuned) – you think it’s real
Other side of debate:
-dove campaign (reaction to aspirational advertising) (sketches + the
evolution viral video) + this girl can/like a girl
-link to Zizek theory – people will buy into campaign knowingly (and also
dove is owned by unileiver who own axe bodyspray)
-debate: people can choose identity (Barbie/nicki) in contrast to pre-
modern where it was decided for you.
-there is nothing new, nothing original anymore (jameson theory)
Ev – sam smith/tom petty (remaking melodies/songs/copied)
-audiences have become more active leading to people being less
creative? (recycling ideas)
-also happens with film industry (everything is remade)
- TV shows don’t change (reality TV) (because it’s successful) – link in
audience theory
-link with hyperreality – people lose sight with what’s real/what’s not
real etc
2. Other side of debate:
- however, everything has been inspired by something else and been
happening for decades (Edison – 6000 attempts, someone else had idea
too but he got patent first……music industry = they’ve been
inspired/copied others……) link with Ferguson theory – “multiple
discovery”
-representation in advertising (dove/this girl can)
-some audiences would see as empowering,
Other side of debate: but some would see as stereotypical and negative
because….
-voyeurism because everyone is always watching and we change our behaviour
because we know we’re always being watched (link to panopticanisation
theory)
-social networking such as facebook
-TV shows – big brother, catfish…..
-black mirror (dystopian) – dark outcomes (flattening of effect – decrease
in morals/values - desensitized because you’re not there)
Other side of debate: could bring people together, increase socialness and
confidence?
-the technology/concept is ‘dying’ – people aren’t interested
-some people don’t care what other’s think!
-inevitable with technology
