Each society was a small kingdom and the leader was called cacique. At the time of Columbus, there were five different kingdoms on the island of
Hispaniola. The Indians practiced polygamy. Most men had two or three wives, but the caciques had has many as thirty. It was a great honor for a
woman to be married to a cacique. She not only enjoyed a materially superior lifestyle, but also her children were held in high esteem. The Taino
world, for the most part, had some of the appearance that the modern imaginations ascribe to the South Pacific Islands. The Taino used two primary
architectural styles for their homes. The general population lived in circular buildings with the poles providing the primary support and these were
covered with the woven straw and palm leaves. They were somewhat like the North American teepees except, they needed to reflect the warmth of the
climate and simply used straw and palm leaves rather than being covered with the skins (Barreiro 8). The caciques were singled out for unique
housing. Their house was rectangular and featured a small porch. Despite the differences in shape, and the considerably larger buildings, the same
material was used.
When the Africans came in the beginning in 1507, they introduced mud and wattle as primary building materials. In addition to the houses, the typical
Taino village contained a flat court in the village that was used for

Summary Of The Proslogion, St. Anselm Of Canterbury
In Proslogion, St. Anselm of Canterbury argues that God must exist because nothing else can exceed him both as a concept in the human mind and as
a figure in reality. As an objection to his argument, Gaunilo of Marmoutier states that anything that exists in the mind can also exist within reality, such
as the idea of a perfect island that everyone has imagined, yet no one has encountered. GauniloК»s objection does not effectively refute St. AnselmК»s
argument because an island does not possess qualities comparable to the God that St. Anselm is arguing for and therefore, greater things can exist
beyond an island. The objection is also inadequate because the concept of an island is already known to exist, and so the embodiment of a perfect island

Anselm argues in Proslogion that God is the greatest thing that anyone has ever thought of, and is objected by Gaunilo who claims that anything can
be argued as the greatest thing that has ever been thought of. I argued that GauniloК»s objection to St. AnselmК»s argument is unconvincing
because a perfect island could not be the greatest thing that has ever been thought of since it does not compare to the idea of God. I also argued that
since the concept of an island already exists, a perfect island could also have already been discovered. An objection to my argument is that a perfect
island could be the greatest thing that has ever been thought of if it did possess characteristics that made it superior to anything else. My response to
this objection was that an island could exceed anything else if it possessed supreme characteristics, yet GauniloК»s description of the perfect island
does not meet those standards, and so his objection remains ineffective. GauniloК»s objection does not sufficiently diminish the argument of St.
Anselm because it only replaces a part of it and does not fully address the entire

The Anglo-Saxon People: Modern Day Western Culture
The Anglo Saxon people provide much of modern day western culture. They birthed old english which grew to modern english, one of the most
commonly spoken languages in the world today. They heavily influenced modern literature with their tales of heroes fighting magical creatures for
honour and glory as is portrayed in fantasy such as Lord of the Rings and Forgotten Realms. A warlike and aggressive people who inhabited the island
nation of Britain post 400 A.D., they were a mix of German, Danish, and Dutch peoples who migrated to the island after the evacuation of the Romans,
avoiding flooding and other hardships in their own nations. Although the nation already had an indigenous people, without the Romans to protect them,

Football is the more common name for soccer in that area. Soccer is without a doubt the favorite of the whole country. Though they have never won a
World Cup, they have placed third twice. All over the country there are an assortment of clubs. Their most successful sport is tennis. Winning numerous
awards and competitions, this is the the sport they obviously excel in. Because of Chilies extensive shoreline, they have the ability to spend time on
water sports. Fishing is just one of many options.
Chile has many tourist opportunity's. Three places that are great to visit are Easter Island, the Atacama Desert, and Santiago. Easter Island is one of
the most famous and widely known features of Chile. It is the most isolated inhabited island in the world. The island was made famous for its stone

The Effective Use Of Foreshadowing In The Most Dangerous...
In the short story "The Most Dangerous Game," author Richard Connell uses foreshadowing to expose General Zaroff as a dangerous cannibal and a
savage to readers. The author uses repetition to emphasize and foreshadow the possibility of cannibalism and peril on the ominous island. In the
beginning of the story, Rainsford believes that the island is inhabited by cannibals: "'The place has a reputation–– a bad one.' 'Cannibals?' suggested
Rainsford. 'Hardly. Even cannibals wouldn't live in such a God–forsaken place'" (Connell 2). The author uses this conversation to foreshadow that there
is danger lurking on the island, maybe even something more hazardous than cannibals. Another literary technique the author uses to show that General

Hawaii Vs America
The purchase of Alaska ended Russia's attempt to expand into the Pacific coast of North America. The United States of America wanted Hawaii
because it was strategically located in the mid pacific. Both states are now widely visited for their snowy mountains and sunny beaches. There was a
lot more than just purchasing Alaska and taking over Hawaii.
Russian explorers had explored Alaska's coast and inward land in 1725. They found the land was filled with many rich natural recourses. For example,
gold and silver. They also found very few inhabitants. TheUnited States of America had big interest in Alaska.Russia lacked the recourses to support
large colonies and have a military presence in Alaska. Especially after their defeat in the Crimean War. This further reduced Russia's interest in Alaska.

Consequences Of Christopher Columbus
Columbus was an explorer who initiated a series of explorations to the Americas and paved the way for new trade routes to Asia; however, a holiday
that is dedicated to a man who 'found' a territory already inhabited, and glorifies a voyage that commenced a mass genocide and slave trade should not
be celebrated.
Despite the fact Columbus day should not be celebrated, a lot could be said for his bravery: daring to succeed in the face of grave danger in the form
of conquering the fear of the unknown while charting unknown waters. Columbus pioneered new sailing and navigating techniques, which allowed the
Europeans to travel further and more safely than ever before. He brought plants and animals from the Americas back to Europe, providing his ... Show

They should be good and intelligent servants, for I see that they say very quickly everything that is said to them; and I believe that they would
become Christians very easily, for it seemed to me that they had no religion" (Columbus 2). Through these words, it can be recognized that Columbus
had other plans in mind than just exploring for new land. His motives are blatantly clear that he wanted to convert the Indians to Christians to use them
as slaves to do his work on his 'new found territory'.
Not only did Columbus bring destruction to the Native's land by scouring it for valuables, he also brought disease and the ideals of slavery that left the
natives with a fraction of the population they had before 1492. The Indians were isolated on their own land, which means they were only introduced
to the diseases known on that particular island. These people had no immunity to the germs like smallpox, measles, and influenza that were brought
over by the European invaders. Columbus first described them as "young people, for none did I see of more than 30 years of age", meaning they
were healthy and living blissfully prior to his arrival (Columbus 2). As Columbus spent more time on the island, he realized he wanted to gain the trust
of the natives, so he began to bargain and trade with them. Through the years, Columbus put forth policies of forced labor where they were put to work
on their own land. There, rape was rampant,

The Conch Symbolizes A Form Of Government
In William Golding's novel, The Lord of the Flies, the conch symbolizes a form of government, but as this symbol's physical appearance fades, so
does the humanity of the characters inhabited on the island. The conch is first found by Ralph and Piggy who are swimming and see it in the clear
water. The boys fish out the conch and marvel at its' beauty. Later on, they figure out how to blow the conch to make a trumpet–like sound. While
doing this, all the other schoolboys stranded on the island hear it and come running. The conch is what brought all the boys together and unified them.
Also, the conch is introduced and talked about as an item of value. All the boys honor and respect the conch. The conch shows a sense of government

YOUNG BOYS SURVIVE FOR MONTHS ON END ON A DESERTED ISLAND
By Jasmine Olivieri
The European Press
Britain – In the midst of World War II, a plane evacuating a group of schoolboys from Britain was shot down, killing the pilot. Sadly, many havinglost
their sanity and consciousness even upon rescue, it was no more than what one would expect from a group of young boys having to fend for themselves.
These unfortunate schoolboys consisting of approximately twenty–five boys all under the young age of twelve, were found by a Navy Officer on an
uninhabited island off the coast of the South Pacific Ocean.

Jobs included hunting, gathering, building shelter, and most importantly keeping the fire burning for a smoke signal. "That was the most important
thing, to keep the fire going. Without the fire there would be no smoke and without smoke there wouldn't have been any way for someone to rescue us."
Ralph, being the leader of the group, stated that these civilized and responsible way of their new life didn't last long after many turned against the
group and turned against sanity, starting with one particular "cruel uncivilized being" named Jack Merridew.
Ralph, swearing that he stayed true to himself and what he believed in, admitted that the boys lost a hold of their own identity and often times turned
against each other.
Ralph, shyly admits that had lost several honourable friends due to the actions made by the group. It was first the death of Simon, when Ralph realized
that the group was capable of almost anything. Simon, being mistaken for a 'beast', was killed in the boy's mob mentality to kill whatever they were
afraid of. "It was dark no one could see him, it was an accident, I don't believe anybody meant to harm anyone, but it was still... murder" says Ralph.
Ralph explains that after Simons death, the young boys not only had to fear the chance of survival and fear the high probability that they would be
there until they died also ended up fearing

Lord Of The Flies Morality
" 'Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!' "(Golding 152). In William Golding's novel Lord of the Flies, a group of boys unfortunately crash
land on an island with nothing but the clothes on their backs; they are compelled to draw out any survival instincts in order to endure the harsh
environment and events that will soon take place over time. What the group of boys did not know was how the island would affect their behaviors and
sense of identifying what was right from wrong. This incantation performed by the boys was the result of being inhabited on the island for a short
amount of time, the boys' sense of morality begins to deteriorate and fade as the island brings forth the buried nature within themselves. Soon enough,

One of the main contributors to the influence of the downfall among the boys would be Jack, the opposing chief of Ralph's group, who is always
trying to be on top. " Jack was standing before a small group of boys....'We'll hunt. I'm going to be chief ' " (Golding 133). This quote comes from
Jack's mouth spouting what he thinks should be done around the island and at the same time declaring himself chief. The majority of the boys had
already voted for Ralph as chief but now it was Jack's turn to forcefully strip the position from him as the greed and selfishness begins to
overwhelm him. As Jack's personality begins to show barbaric traits after experiencing hunting, he is consumed with power desiring the role of the
sole leader on the island and even going to the drastic measures of murder to accomplish his goal. The island is then broken into two groups leading
to much chaos and havoc between the two communities that cause severe consequences that affect the civilization on the island. Even in this
situation, Jack was still in a state where all he desired was the role of the chief among the boys. " 'See? See? That's what you'll get! I mean that! There
isn't a tribe for you anymore! The conch is gone–' " (Golding 181). Even after witnessing Piggy's recent death, Jack still has the

Anarchism In Lord Of The Flies
What would the world be like without government? Living in a state of nature, without any laws, is bound to lead to complete disruption, confusion
and most importantly, disorder. With the absence of government, we are allowing access to absolute freedom of each individual despite the
consequences, also known as an anarchy. Anarchism plays a huge role in the creation of our government. Government is the system of people, laws
and officials that define and control the country that you live in. In the film, "Lord of the Flies", a group of British boys are stuck on an island by
themselves and must learn how to survive in a habitat that consists of pigs, fruit trees, a "beastie", and bad decisions. Throughout the film the characters
illustrate the following purposes of government, to form a more perfect union, promote the general welfare and provide for the common defense.
First and foremost, forming a perfect union means to obtain control, safety and unity for all people long–term. This relates to the film because in the
beginning the boys arrived on the island from a plane crash. This resulted in the boys forming a more perfect union because they must potentially take
leadership and bring everyone together by strength, for all of the individuals on the inhabited island until they find a way to return home. To start if off,

Sicil Sicily Research Paper
Sicily, with an area of 25,711 sq km, is the largest and most densely populated of the islands in the Mediterranean Sea. The island is separated from the
Italian mainland by the Strait of Messina just 3km to the north. A map reveals Italy's long shoe–like peninsula seemingly booting the triangular shaped
island into the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, almost to Tunisia in northern Africa, 160 km to the southeast. Sicily's strategic location has made it the
world's most conquered island. This autonomous region of present day Italy has seen the rise and fall of various conquerors – Greek, Carthaginian,
Roman, Vandal, Byzantine, Moslem, Norman, French and Spanish.
Sicily is mostly mountainous and enjoys a pleasant subtropical and Mediterranean climate. Average rainfall range is 400–600 mm on the plains and up
to 1400 mm in the mountains. There is a plentiful supply of underground and spring water. The island is often subject to intense seismic and volcanic

Remembering the Flightles, Giant Moa Bird
Beautiful islands filled with exotic, large, endemic birds and other mega–fauna seems like a pipe dream from science fiction writers such as Michael
Crichton, however on the island of New Zealand in the south Pacific Ocean, this pipe dream was real and had the pleasure of calling itself home to the
extinct, exotic, flightless bird species of the giant moa (Dinornis, Megalapteryx) (Bunce et al. 2009). Stories of it's glory and extinction of the moa
have been passed down from generation to generation by the Maori tribesmen whom were the first of the Polynesian settlers to settle on the island of
New Zealand and ultimately were the drivers and cause of the bird's extinction. The forces which drove the evolution of giant moa can be studied
through species with similar morphology, similar geographical location, and the forces which would either negatively or positively select upon the
moa. While giant moa obviously cannot be studied living, through the use of invaluable soft tissue specimens, bones, the fossil record we can

Puerto Rico Essay
The definition of history according to NAF is, the important events that have happened at the destination, the people it has brought and why, and how
the destination has changed over time. Puerto Rico has had a rich history that has affected its development, culture, and population. Puerto Rico's history
has shaped the country into the beautiful tourist destination that it now is.
Prior to the 1800s, Puerto Rico was a land that was inhabited by indians and was only beginning to be discovered by other large scale countries such as
Spain. Between 430 BC and 1000 AD Indians known as Taino settled in puerto Rico. When settled these natives named the island Borinquen. During
the period of exploration, Christopher Columbus came across Puerto Rico ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This has to do a large part with the discovery of gold mines. Many traveled to the island in order to find gold and hopefully get rich. Sadly, this also
involved bringing slaves over. Puerto Rico used slaves to dig for gold, this contributed largely to the mixture and diversity of Puerto Rico. The variety
of inhabitants became prominent. In addition to this, the conquerors also had a large impact on the culture. In specific, when Spain conquered Puerto
RIco they had many spanish people move to inhabit the land. There were so many different ethnicities that spanish wasn't declared the official language

An Essay On Charles Town History
Awarded accolades including "America's Most Friendly City, and "the most polite and hospitable city in America", Charleston, South Carolina is the
oldest and largest city in the state, and is situated on Charleston Harbor, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean. Six distinct areas fall within the city's limit: the
Peninsula or Downtown, West Ashley, Johns Island, James Island, Daniel Island, and the Cainhoy Peninsula. In 1670, at the time of its founding,
Charleston was known as Charles Town, in honor of King Charles II of England. Its original site was located at Albemarle Point on what is now
known as Charles Towne Landing, but was abandoned in 1680 for its current location. The Cusabo Indians are believed to be the earliest inhabitants of
Charleston and were present when the first English settlers brought over from Bermuda by Governor William Sayle made contact in 1670. Settlement
was turbulent as the new settlers declared war on the Cusabo Indians in late 1671. Alliances were forged with the English the Westo, a powerful slaving
northern tribe who participated in the local trade for guns, but that only lasted until 1680 following their destruction. Following 1680, English relations
with the Cusabo Indians improved and trading flourished. Charleston became a colonial seaport that was subject to attacks from Native Americans,
pirates, as well as countries, including Spain and France that contested England's claim to the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Life of Juan Ponce de Leon
Have you ever heard of Juan Ponce de Leon? Rumor has it he was searching for the mythical ''fountain of youth'', but historians suggest otherwise. There
are no surviving documents saying that Juan Ponce de Leon was searching for the fountain of youth. It is thought that Gonzalo FernГЎndez de Oviedo
y Valdez disliked Juan, and attempting to make him look foolish, spread the rumor saying that Juan Ponce de Leon was looking for the fountain of
youth. Both Juan Ponce de Leon's birthplace and birthdate are not known for sure. Based on their research, historians believe Ponce de Leon was
born in either 1460 or 1474. He is thought to be born in Tierra de Campos. Tierra de Campos is a village in northwestern Spain. He was likely born
into a noble family. Noble families sons' were sent to work for famous nobleman. Working for a nobleman would help further his education to
become a knight. First, Ponce de Leon became a page to Pedro Nunez de Guzman. As a page, Juan served meals and went to several events with
Guzman and his wife. As a teenager, Juan's position required more work. Juan became a squire. As a squire, Ponce de Leon cared for Guzman's
armor, and assisted him in battle against the muslims. Ponce de Leon's career as an explorer began in 1493, on Columbus's second voyage. He was
a conquistador, a leader of the Spanish conquest. He was probably looking to become wealthy from all of the gold in the Americas. Ponce de Leon
may have been curious. It is a mystery

Currently, the national language is Portuguese. Furthermore, the national identity of the island varies. In the North, the people still identify with the

What Are The Similarities Between The Lorax And Easter's End
Natural resources are defined as "industrial materials and capacities supplied by nature," and as a society, we depend on these resources, such as
trees, water, and plants, to survive. We use these resources everyday, and they are a key part of our world. However, as time goes on they are
becoming more and more limited. So, what happens when these resources run out? Such an event is demonstrated in the stories of The Lorax by Dr.
Seuss and Easter's End by Jared Diamond, where natural resources were used up until they completely ran out. The stories have their similarities and
their differences, but the meaning behind them are very similar, and almost the same. The stories of The Lorax and Easter's End both relate and differ
in their uses of their natural resources, biodiversity, and consequences of their actions. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Brown Bar–ba–loots were bear–like animals whose source of food came from the Truffula Trees, they spent all day relaxing in the shade of the
trees and eating the Truffula fruits. There were also the Swomee Swans, a bird species that once inhabited the Truffula Tree forest. Lastly, there were
the Humming Fish who inhabited the once clean and fresh pond. The Humming Fish, as inferred by their name, like to hum, and when they did it
made the land seem even more peaceful and enjoyable. Aside from just animal life, the forest also included ponds, trees, and green grass. On Easter
Island however, there were no Brown Bar–ba–loots, Swomee Swans, Humming–Fish, or Truffula Trees. Easter Island was instead made up of hauhau
trees, toromiro trees, grasses, fish, porpoises, chickens, rats, and various types of seabirds. Both societies were similar in the fact that they had a
great number of animal species and trees at one time, but also differ because they had different types of animals, the Lorax had mammals, fish, and
birds, while Easter Island was mainly made up of birds and

Two anoles on different islands can have similar traits as long as their ecological niches are similar, however geographic isolation was the cause to
have 3 different species evolving. They might have evolved by having swam, floated on natural rafts, or the islands may have been connected at one
point. Therefore, lizards on the same island are more closely related to each other than lizards that have similar body shapes and live in the same type
of habitat. Lizards from the same island are more closely related to one another than to similar looking lizards from other islands. For example, a
grass–bush anole from Puerto Rico is more related a trunk–ground anole also from Puerto Rico, than it is to a grass–bush anole from Hispaniola. This
shows that the same type of anole lizards evolve independently on each of the islands. However, there was a point in time whereas the anole
species from the four Caribbean islands all evolved from one common ancestor. The cladogram produced shows that species from separate islands
and ecomorphs, for example the A. cybotes from Hispaniola and the A. occultus from Puerto Rico, are more closely related to each other than they
are to L. carinatus, which belongs to a different genus of lizards. The DNA evidence gathered from anoles from the four islands is able to determine
the ancestry of a single species that inhabited the Caribbean allowed for diversity of new species in the

Today, I learned about the birth and the spread of Islam. Islam began with one man who was named Muhammad. He experienced somewhat of a
spiritual revelation when he claimed that the angel, Gabriel, had told him to become the messenger of God (or in Arabic– Allah). He garnered
followers and spread his message through preaching similar to how Jesus spread Christianity. Islam continued to spread around the world at a rapid
pace when merchants and scholars began to carry their religion where their travels took them.
Today, I explored early Africa. Africa's first early civilizations were Egypt and Nubia. They were built around the northern Nile river. These two
countries relied heavily on trade due to the fact that they both had jurisdiction over large valuable mineral deposits. During this time, Islam spread
across Africa because of the Muslim merchants that came to trade with these African nations. The Romans and the Carthaginians also inhabited North
Africa along with the Egyptians and the

Up to the mid 1800s Fijian religions practiced rituals that included cannibalism. One famous account of Fijian cannibalism took place 1867. A
missionary named Thomas Baker was welcomed by the Fijians to live with them. He was helping in Fiji for a while until, accidentally, he touched the
chiefs head. In punishment, they killed and ate him. The rock that killed Baker is on display in the Fiji museum along with the soles of his sandals.
Many people who have families from Fiji have heard accounts of Fiji's gruesome past. The author of one website explained his story of how he

It is evident that Caliban is claiming to have rightful ownership of the island, but Shakespeare gives European audiences a response to this claim
and similar ones of the real world. Prospero saved Caliban from the witch Sycorax and should be thankful for all Prosper has brought him and not
worry about ownership of the island since the stronger, smarter European is here now. Caliban is also portrayed as a moral less monster who rapes
and smells of fish. This characterization was brought upon many other natives during this time in history as well. The magic that came with the
island can be seen as a natural resource of the island that benefits Prospero. This is much like the real natural resources discovered by the Europeans
at this time in history when Shakespeare wrote the play. Most critics of the play state that Prospero is a portrayal of Shakespeare himself, but it is

Each society was a small kingdom and the leader was called cacique. At the time of Columbus, there were five different kingdoms on the island of Hispaniola. The Indians practiced polygamy. Most men had two or three wives, but the caciques had has many as thirty. It was a great honor for a woman to be married to a cacique. She not only enjoyed a materially superior lifestyle, but also her children were held in high esteem. The Taino world, for the most part, had some of the appearance that the modern imaginations ascribe to the South Pacific Islands. The Taino used two primary architectural styles for their homes. The general population lived in circular buildings with the poles providing the primary support and these were covered with the woven straw and palm leaves. They were somewhat like the North American teepees except, they needed to reflect the warmth of the climate and simply used straw and palm leaves rather than being covered with the skins (Barreiro 8). The caciques were singled out for unique housing. Their house was rectangular and featured a small porch. Despite the differences in shape, and the considerably larger buildings, the same material was used. When the Africans came in the beginning in 1507, they introduced mud and wattle as primary building materials. In addition to the houses, the typical Taino village contained a flat court in the village that was used for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Summary Of The Proslogion, St. Anselm Of Canterbury In Proslogion, St. Anselm of Canterbury argues that God must exist because nothing else can exceed him both as a concept in the human mind and as a figure in reality. As an objection to his argument, Gaunilo of Marmoutier states that anything that exists in the mind can also exist within reality, such as the idea of a perfect island that everyone has imagined, yet no one has encountered. GauniloК»s objection does not effectively refute St. AnselmК»s argument because an island does not possess qualities comparable to the God that St. Anselm is arguing for and therefore, greater things can exist beyond an island. The objection is also inadequate because the concept of an island is already known to exist, and so the embodiment of a perfect island ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Anselm argues in Proslogion that God is the greatest thing that anyone has ever thought of, and is objected by Gaunilo who claims that anything can be argued as the greatest thing that has ever been thought of. I argued that GauniloК»s objection to St. AnselmК»s argument is unconvincing because a perfect island could not be the greatest thing that has ever been thought of since it does not compare to the idea of God. I also argued that since the concept of an island already exists, a perfect island could also have already been discovered. An objection to my argument is that a perfect island could be the greatest thing that has ever been thought of if it did possess characteristics that made it superior to anything else. My response to this objection was that an island could exceed anything else if it possessed supreme characteristics, yet GauniloК»s description of the perfect island does not meet those standards, and so his objection remains ineffective. GauniloК»s objection does not sufficiently diminish the argument of St. Anselm because it only replaces a part of it and does not fully address the entire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Despite the fact Columbus day should not be celebrated, a lot could be said for his bravery: daring to succeed in the face of grave danger in the form of conquering the fear of the unknown while charting unknown waters. His motives are blatantly clear that he wanted to convert the Indians to Christians to use them as slaves to do his work on his 'new found territory'. Not only did Columbus bring destruction to the Native's land by scouring it for valuables, he also brought disease and the ideals of slavery that left the natives with a fraction of the population they had before 1492. The Indians were isolated on their own land, which means they were only introduced to the diseases known on that particular island. These people had no immunity to the germs like smallpox, measles, and influenza that were brought over by the European invaders. Columbus first described them as "young people, for none did I see of more than 30 years of age", meaning they were healthy and living blissfully prior to his arrival (Columbus 2). Living in a state of nature, without any laws, is bound to lead to complete disruption, confusion and most importantly, disorder. With the absence of government, we are allowing access to absolute freedom of each individual despite the consequences, also known as an anarchy. Anarchism plays a huge role in the creation of our government. Government is the system of people, laws and officials that define and control the country that you live in. In the film, "Lord of the Flies", a group of British boys are stuck on an island by themselves and must learn how to survive in a habitat that consists of pigs, fruit trees, a "beastie", and bad decisions. Throughout the film the characters illustrate the following purposes of government, to form a more perfect union, promote the general welfare and provide for the common defense. First and foremost, forming a perfect union means to obtain control, safety and unity for all people long–term. This relates to the film because in the beginning the boys arrived on the island from a plane crash. This resulted in the boys forming a more perfect union because they must potentially take leadership and bring everyone together by strength, for all of the individuals on the inhabited island until they find a way to return home. • 25. Remembering the Flightles, Giant Moa Bird Beautiful islands filled with exotic, large, endemic birds and other mega–fauna seems like a pipe dream from science fiction writers such as Michael Crichton, however on the island of New Zealand in the south Pacific Ocean, this pipe dream was real and had the pleasure of calling itself home to the extinct, exotic, flightless bird species of the giant moa (Dinornis, Megalapteryx) (Bunce et al. 2009). Stories of it's glory and extinction of the moa have been passed down from generation to generation by the Maori tribesmen whom were the first of the Polynesian settlers to settle on the island of New Zealand and ultimately were the drivers and cause of the bird's extinction. The forces which drove the evolution of giant moa can be studied through species with similar morphology, similar geographical location, and the forces which would either negatively or positively select upon the moa. While giant moa obviously cannot be studied living, through the use of invaluable soft tissue specimens, bones, the fossil record we can extrapolate many of their morphological features as well as extract a very important molecule known as molecule. DNA sequencing can help bring objective conclusions and can help shed light on their morphology, lifestyles, genealogy, evolutionary history and other genetically related species. It seems that today it is too commonplace hearing of great, exotic, and spectacular species only to learn that they were brought down to extinction due to the direct or ... The Cusabo Indians are believed to be the earliest inhabitants of Charleston and were present when the first English settlers brought over from Bermuda by Governor William Sayle made contact in 1670. Settlement was turbulent as the new settlers declared war on the Cusabo Indians in late 1671. Two anoles on different islands can have similar traits as long as their ecological niches are similar, however geographic isolation was the cause to have 3 different species evolving. They might have evolved by having swam, floated on natural rafts, or the islands may have been connected at one point. Therefore, lizards on the same island are more closely related to each other than lizards that have similar body shapes and live in the same type of habitat. Lizards from the same island are more closely related to one another than to similar looking lizards from other islands. For example, a grass–bush anole from Puerto Rico is more related a trunk–ground anole also from Puerto Rico, than it is to a grass–bush anole from Hispaniola. This shows that the same type of anole lizards evolve independently on each of the islands. However, there was a point in time whereas the anole species from the four Caribbean islands all evolved from one common ancestor. The cladogram produced shows that species from separate islands and ecomorphs, for example the A. cybotes from Hispaniola and the A. occultus from Puerto Rico, are more closely related to each other than they are to L. carinatus, which belongs to a different genus of lizards.
