2. What does digital literacy in the classroom mean?
How do you integrate it in a classroom setting?
* What is Digital Literacy?
Digital literacy is just what you might imagine, and then some...
dig-it-al lit-er-a-cy: the awareness, attitude and ability of individuals to appropriately use
digital tools and facilities to identify, access, manage, integrate, evaluate, analyze and
synthesize digital resources, construct new knowledge, create media expressions, and
communicate with others, in the context of specific life situations, in order to enable
constructive social action; and to reflect upon this process.[Martin, 2006]
* Functional Internet Literacy is best achieved in structured and directed learning
situations.
- S.L. Hackbarth (2002)
3. Technology skills need to be taught but HOW so that
it’s relevant to the learning, meaningful or purposeful
but not tokenistic?
I began to brainstorm what I do know that could be adapted or changed to be used in my digital
literacy lessons....... : Poetry-
publishing, illustrating, usin
:Evaluations g font for effect
of :
performanc
es- written,
survey
: On going thinking,
completion reflections, additions without
redoing all the time
4. Examples: Poetry
Students published (instead or rewriting we typed them) their poetry.
They were then involved in modelled and guided lessons were given
on
- high-lighting text that requires changes to be made to
- changing font, colour and alignment.
5. Examples: Poetry
After writing a class poem the students then altered it to create a rebus
poem. Each one being very different in its appearance.
They were involved in modelled and guided lessons on how to find and
insert pictures (now I want use allowable ones) and resize to fit the
poem.
6. What pictures to insert??
After initial lessons on inserting pictures, I became concerned about using
allowable images. So now I am using...
* Google search: I now look for pictures we CAN use by changing the
using the options
1. Search an image then go to option wheel
2. Click advance settings and go down to USAGE RIGHTS and change
to free to use or share.
7.
8. * Microsoft pictures- many are the clip art( which can also be used if not
focusing on an internet search lesson) but are all useable and easy limits
the amount of time scrolling through images but still teaches how to select
and insert

* My own images that I have saved and tagged in photo gallery (or picasa)
10. Commenting to a video:
what I want to do next Write 2 things you now want
to know more about.
*
11. The last box couldn’t be typed into because it hadnt been
set up yet.
So how do I do it?
The function to do this is not set on the
program. You need to activate it.
1. Open PowerPoint
1. Go to FILE and click on Options
12. 3. Click on Customize
Ribbon
4. On the right hand side
click to tick the
DEVELOPER box
13. 5. You now have the Developer tab along the top– click on it
6. Now add a text box by clicking on the ‘abc box’ next to the A.
You now have a writing
frame. You need to make
it work like a text box ( it
can not be typed into yet)
14. 7. Right click on the writing frame
and click on PROPERTIES
8. This scary looking box opens:
You need to change the False
functions to True
- EnterKeyBehaviour
- Multiline
( you can also now change
scroll bar to allow for more
writing if you wish)
9. Change font and font size by
clicking on the Font section.
TIP: Now you have made the writing
frame act as a text box copy and paste
the newly created text box on each
screen you require to avoid going
through this step each time!!
15. Finally when you have
finished setting up
you MUST Save As a
PowerPoint Show
(you will need to
change this from
PowerPoint
Presentation) or it
will not work.
