Hiroshima Point Of View
This novel was written in a unique format in which the author, John Hersey, used third person point
of view to introduce six ordinary people who have experienced a horrendous phenomenon. The first
chapter depicts what occurred before the bomb struck. At the time, Hiroshima was conducting
several night air–raid warnings which prevented any civilians from getting their sleep. There were
daily weather runs conducted by the Americans which the Japanese disregarded for they only
worried over the B–29s. Father Kiyoshi Tanimoto, minister of the Hiroshima Methodist Church,
rose at five o'clock to prepare for a day's journey to Koi, a city away from Hiroshima. Father
Tanimoto and a friend had to transfer Tanimoto's daughter belongings to friend's house ... Show

Throughout each individual's journey, the destruction and misery that the bomb created can be
observed. Asuna Park is where almost all the the novel's individuals meet. Father Kiyoshi Tanimoto
rose from his hideout and immediately witnessed the destruction of Hiroshima. Fortunately, he met
his uninjured wife after the bomb, but their encounter was brief for their circumstances had them
departing already. Father Tanimoto later took refuge in Park Asano, and unintentionally became the
leader of all the wounded. Toshiko Sasaki remained unconscious for at least three hours, unable to
move. She scream for help until finally three men came to her rescue. He left leg was severely
wounded, and she was later stationed at a shelter with three other damaged people. Dr. Masakazu
Fujii was able to dislodge himself from the timber and, along with other doctors, nurses, and
civilians, sought shelter from underneath the bridge. On the way to the bridge, Dr. Fujii briefly
noticed the huge fire that seemed to consume the surrounding areas. Feeling that the danger has
passed, Dr. Fujii journeyed to his home and later realized his family's home has collapsed. At the
same moment, Hatsuyo Nakamura had discovered her three children were alive and well. One of her
neighbor persuaded Nakamura to take refuge at Asuna Park. The park was still intact which could be
used as a cover against any future possible attacks. While preparing for the migration, she saw
Father Wilhelm Kleinsorge wondering around bewildered. Father Kleinsorge first assisted out of
dangerous environments, dislodged several people, then decided to take shelter in Asuna Park.
Before their departure, Father Kleinsorge and other priests were forced to ignore some of the cries.
Even if the priests attempted to aid those in need, the circumstances prevented it which resulted in
thousands of unnecessary casualties. Dr. Terufumi Sasaki was overwhelmed with

The Massacre At Wounded Knee Analysis
The Massacre at Wounded Knee First, and foremost, the battle between the white man and the
Indian Nation is a poignant historical portrayal of what took place at the Wounded Knee Massacre.
It was all set in motion in the "Moon When the Deer Shed Their Horns", a Sioux moon of
December. The Sioux were so distraught about the assassination of Sitting Bull; they could not
muster an uprising. The Ghost Dance was their only hope to eradicate the white man. "There was no
hope on earth, and God seemed to have forgotten us. Some said they saw the Son of God; others did
not see Him. If he had come, He would do some great things as He had done before. We doubted it
because we had seen neither Him nor His works. The people did not know; they did not care. They
snatched at hope. They screamed like crazy men to Him for mercy. They caught at the promise they
heard He had made. The white men were frightened and called for soldiers. We had begged for life,
and the white man thought we wanted theirs. We heard the soldiers were coming. We did not fear.
We hope that we could tell them our troubles and get help. A white man said the soldiers wanted to
kill us. We did not believe it, but some were frightened and ... Show more content on

In April of 1868, the treaty of Fort Laramie conceded to the Sioux Black Hills, in the Dakota
Territory. Numerous miners moved into the area, one such miner discovering gold. In 1874, The US
government sent General Custer and one–thousand men on the Black Hills Expedition to investigate
the gold discovery, and natural resources, Custer's confirmation, and anticipation of the gold
discovery led many settlers into the Black Hills. Therefore, the fueling tension between the whites,
US government, and the Indians were an indication of the battle to

Battle Of Wounded Knee
Battle Of Wounded Knee The battle of Wounded Knee was considered one of America's most
unforgettable moments in history. It all started in December 15 1890, when reservation police tried
to arrest famous Sioux chief, "Sitting Bull" whom they mistakened for a "Ghost Dancer" and he was
killed during the process of the arrest, infuriating the Indians at Pine Ridge. The U.S government
worried about the growth of the "Ghost Dance" at Pine Ridge, which the Indians thought was a way
to make the gods create the world anew, and eliminate all non– believers or non–Indians, and this
made the U.S in high alert. The U.S government knew they had to do something about the Indians'
Ghost Dance, so in December 29, the U.S sent out the 7th Cavalry of America,

Now in existence for over 13 years, the Wounded Warrior Project aim to support all our wounded
service men and women in our nation. Our Foundation continues to serves our veterans and service
members who acquired or suffered a physical and, or mental injury during their military service
after September 11, 2001. On that date, all of America watched in horror as terrorists attacked the
twin towers in New York City, killing, and taking over 3,000 innocent lives. After those attacks,
many young men and women volunteered to serve in the United States Military for the fight against
terrorism.

Analysis Of Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee
For the critical analyses paper, I chose to read the book entitled as "Bury My Heart at Wounded
Knee" by Dee Brown. This book is a non–fiction historical genre and was public in 1970 by New
York: Holt, Rinehart & Winston. The Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is a sad story based on true
events that portray the massacre of the first American Indians during the nineteenth century. This
book details many battles and many conflicts that Indians had with American whites that resulted in
the deaths of a bunch of important native chiefs. Even though, many of them did not die during the
battle. This book gave us a better understanding of who really was the American Indian and how
they were wronged by the white people because of their lands. This book is told chronologically by
tribes, chief, and events. The first chapter is the only one that might have a little different from the
others. It basically a reflection of how different groups of Europeans treated the American Indians
that they encountered in America when they arrived. Columbus and his men were received with
honor by the Indians and he used those kindnesses to take advantage of the Indians and kidnaped
many men, women, and children to be a slave in Spain. In contrary to this, The English used "subtler
methods" and were able to live in peace with Indians for several years. As a said previously, the
story is told chronologically, so the following chapters are about the battles and the chiefs of the
tribe. On those chapters

Persuasive Speech About Civil War
Conservatives, Feuillants, Jacobins and the People of France, the time for peace has come. Our once
great nation is now deeply wounded and divided. If we want to heal this nation, we must first heal
ourselves. We must be wounded healers, instead of the wounded warriors that we are. We must set
aside our differences and work together to make France into the great nation it once was.
The revolution is over! I urge you to put down your weapons and stop. Look around at all the great
work we have done. We the people, finally have a voice, we have the power. "Civil war is harmful to
both parties; for both the conquerors and the conquered, the destruction is the same"(BK 48). If we
continue to fight, more blood will cover the streets of France. Blood of our friends and family
member, and possibly even our own. We have accomplished what we set out to do already, anything
more at this point will only cause us to lose who we were and what we believe.
We need to start to reconcile with ourselves and start helping our neighbors. Once we rebuild and
focus on the right, we too can become healthy once again. "More men become good through
practice, than by nature" (Bk 48). If we continue to focus on the bad, we will only become worse.
We the people, the country, even the world deserve better than what we have become and what we
have done. If we start to heal ourselves, we then can begin to heal the nation. It is only then we can
start to become who we want to become.

Battle Of Wounded Knee Essay
Battle of the Wounded Knee
The battle of the wounded knee occurred on December 29, 1890. When it occurred, it was near
wounded knee creek on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in the US state of South Dakota.
Philip Wells Was a mixed–blood sioux who served as an interpreter for the army. He later recounted
what he saw that Monday morning. Surrounding their camp was a force of U.S. troops charged with
the responsibility of arresting Big Foot and disarming his warriors.
Just before the battle of wounded knee the captured indians had been ordered to give up their arms.
During that time a medicine man, dressed painted, executed the maneuvers of the ghost dance. He or
some other medicine man approached to within three or four feet from Frederick with a long cheese
knife. The medicine man stabbed him during the melee and nearly cut off his nose.
Troop K was drawn up between the tents of the women and children. They also drawn up the main
body of the indians who were summoned to deliver their arms. The indians started firing into ' troop

With an 90% grade from Charity Navigator I am not alone. The WWP has used its many programs
to reach Wounded Veterans and help them recover from the atrocities of war. War leaves Veterans
with both mental scars in the form of PTSD and other mental disorders, as well as physical scars.
The WWP helps with recovery from both. So it's time for you to do your part. It's hard for us to
image coming home from a war–torn country wounded and without any friends or family to help
you. And this is a sad reality for many wounded warriors. So by donating time or money you can do
your part in serving those who served us. They went over to a foreign country to fight and protect
our rights. The very least we can do is help them when they return. Many men and women who
serve get PTSD from the pressure caused by the military life. Unfortunately PTSD can lead to other
mental conditions and if help is not given sometimes suicide. But you can help prevent this. How
much easier can it get? You send the WWP money or volunteer time and they find how it can be
used most effectively. So please, if you care at all about the men and women wounded while serving
their's and your country, donate to the WWP. A foundation dedicated to helping veterans who were

bullets whizzing through the air. The smell of gunpowder quickly became noticeable. The navy
coated men around her jumped into action, but were slowly being overtaken. The only attempt she
could make to detach herself from the shouts and screams surrounding her, was to focus on the soft
rushing of the bubbling river nearby. The land was serene with spring. Tennessee was ablaze with

amidst the land; camping, cooking, and training. The Union army was at ease. Compared with what
was to come, this scene could not have been more ironic or more tragic. A sudden Confederate
attack in force in the early morning hours caused half–awake Union troops to flee their camps. The
battle broke full force at daybreak Sunday, April 6th. At sunrise Lauren heard the thunder of distant
musketry. The long roll had called the regiment out, and they did not know what an hour may bring
forth. Pickets had been driven in, and skirmishing was going on at the front. Distant musketry and
the rumbling of artillery past Lauren's tent gave the situation a look of reality which she had not

them. This can cause a person not to want to be so forthcoming with their wounds and to keep them
hidden. In the book The Wounded Healer (Nouwen, 1972), the author discusses how important it is
that a pastor of a church not talk so much about his personal problems so much, for it will not help
his parishioners with what they are going through. The same can be said for counselors and
therapists who may have been wounded in one way or another at one time in their life. It may be
alright to share your struggles, but to share your problems and pains with your client is something
that I would think should be avoided. This is where my thought process came together for this
paradox, because through wounded healing are there people who are trying to get healed themselves
while healing others? Nouwen goes on to say that as healers, that we need to be able to show
compassion, care, understanding, and forgiveness (pg.88). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Their problems may not be real to us, but to them it is real and that is where compassion and
empathy come into play. This is when we can take everything that we have learned through
schooling, life experiences, resources and knowledge and bring it into action to help out with our
client (Herman, 2015). Through all of this we can take all the skills that we have gathered over time
and bring them together to help our clients begin the road to recovery. PTSD is a term that has
gotten a lot of traction or attention in recent years. There was a time where soldiers would come
back from war and if they acted differently, say for instance when they came back from World War I
they were shell shocked. When the veterans came back home from World War II and Korea, it was
known as combat fatigue (Tick, 2005). Once soldiers started coming back home from Vietnam, and
then both Iraq wars and Afghanistan did the term PTSD get the recognition that it does

Army Duty
In this scenario, where a platoon of enemy combatants has taken refuge inside a school in a nearby
village, any law enforcement assistant is needed to save as many civilians as possible. As an officer,
it is my duty to follow the laws and punish those who break the law. I also must follow orders from
a higher officer, but for this scenario, my morals come first and I cannot just sit at the base and wait
for people to die. My decision is to go to the nearby village and help the as many as I can villagers
from the enemies. The plan is to form a group with other soldiers who have the same mindset as me.
With the group, we can move swiftly and form a plan. This would mean the soldiers are risking their
lives with no available backup. Our families ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The enemies are going to be alerted at this point that they are being attacked because of the bombs
that have been exploded. They will use villagers as human shields to protect themselves against
possible gunfire, which makes it difficult to save the villagers unharmed. Our movements around the
school need to be quiet and unrecognizable. We know these enemies are not afraid to kill so, we
approach them with caution. A couple of soldiers from the group will be left outside to take down
any enemies who try to escape from the school. Negotiating with the main leader is our first option,
telling the leader that he will have a surplus amount of money with a "safe" getaway for the safety of
the villagers. If the leader refuses, they could most likely try to kill us. However, warning the leader,
they only have 10 mins to get out the building, if not, the whole building is blowing up with preset
bombs located in the middle of the building. This action is to show the leader we are not afraid to
die, which in actuality, there was no bomb. Gunfire is bound to happen, lives are going to be brought
to an end, and traumatic experiences will never be forgotten. Being trained soldiers, we have enough
potential to make it out of the battle with more injured than dead. Some mothers sacrifice their lives
to save their children and some men gave their lives to recuse their families. Soldiers have lost their
lives; however, they will not be

Wounded Knee:The Ties of Religion and Violence Essay
Wounded Knee: The Ties of Religion and Violence
On the morning of December 29, 1890, many Sioux Indians (estimated at above two hundred) died
at the hands of the United States Army near Wounded Knee Creek on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
The Indians were followers of the Ghost Dance religion, devised by Wovoka, a Paiute prophet, as a
spiritual outlet for Indian repression by whites. The United States Army set out to intercept this
group of Native Americans because they performed the controversial Ghost Dance. Both whites' and
the Sioux's misunderstanding of an originally peaceful Indian religion culminated in the Battle of
Wounded Knee. This essay first shows how the Ghost Dance came about, its later adaptation by the
Sioux, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, the Sioux population misconstrued Wovoka's teachings and adapted them to their
own personal needs. When the Sioux adopted the Ghost Dance, they turned it from a religious
ceremony into a violent act. When Wovoka had preached to be passive and patient for God's
intervention, the Sioux thought this meant to rid their land of the white population (Malinowski
467). For example, the militant leaders Short Bull and Kicking Bear attended the Ghost Dance and
went home with the interpretation they should proactively rid the continent of whites through any
means necessary (Malinowski 467). The Sioux had always been recognized as warlike, but now
with the Ghost Dance, they were viewed as "half–crazed 'savages'" who set out to be "demonic
killers" (Moses 342). With this misunderstanding, the Ghost Dance received a bad reputation. If the
Sioux did any killing in the name of the Ghost Dance, all tribes associated with the religion were
also seen in a negative way.
The Sioux also misunderstood Wovoka's teaching that a gun could not kill him. He unknowingly
misled the Sioux who took the teaching literally and adorned what they thought to be bulletproof
shirts. The Sioux believed that a bullet physically could not harm them, and this gave them false
confidence. Many felt themselves to be invincible and this resulted in disaster when shots were fired
at them. The U. S.

ground late at night on guard and having to write this letter as fast as possible to be able to let you
guys know how I am travelling and to inform you of the progress. My hearing has declined since I
left home and isn't getting much better with all the loud noises going off around me, and my health
hasn't been the greatest since being at Harper's Ferry, but I'm sure once this war is all over I will

What is Truly Seriving?
Truly serving means "willingness to set aside our personal agenda and serve others on their terms,"
and an "eagerness to (...) take proactive steps to find opportunities to serve" (Soper, 1) Service has
many layers, including giving up "the normal progression of life–high school, college, work–to do
something whose end was civic" (Mangone). However, service generally boils down to four main
categories: giving a part of yourself, committing yourself to a cause, believing in something greater
than yourself, and asking for help. The men and women of the United States military exemplify each
of these categories through their dedication and sacrifice. They are the epitome of service,
sacrificing life and limb to protect our freedom. The Wounded Warrior Project offers a number of
programs, including Warriors to Work, Peer Support, Family Retreats, and many others to serve
veterans after they have returned from the line of duty.
Service means giving a part of yourself. For Army Staff Sergeant Chris Gordon this was literal;
Chris lost his right leg while serving in Iraq. On March 13, 2005, he was participating in a routine
patrol in the Iraqi city of Tal–Afiar. According to Chris,
"They said we were going to take part in a search. By that time, we'd been in Iraq for six months,
and we had done a lot of searches like that. Then on that morning, we found some contraband,
confiscated it, and then we were consolidating around a mosque. Each Stryker came up and lined up

Stigmas In The Wounded Storyteller
There are individual stories that come from a person's experience with illness. There are many
stigmas that are associated with certain diseases that in turn cause for the individuals with the illness
to be perceived in a certain manner. In the book by Arthur W. Frank, titled "The Wounded
Storyteller,"I am challenged in the way that I will chose to perceive the illness that someone is living
with. In my opinion, the author is really calling me to change my mindset on how I look at the
people who have an illness. I am being challenged to look at the individual by themselves without
allowing the illness that they have to cause me to forget that they are more than their illness. The
concept of reminding myself that the client is more than his/her illness is something that I must
make a conscious effort to do in my career as a nurse. The author shows us the readers how to look
at these individuals through their eyes. He states that as the individuals tell their stories through their
bodies they are able to then form a new viewpoint of themselves in correlation to the world. He
shows us how these illness stories can be explained through the body. Lastly, he informs us about
two different time periods of how illness is regarded during that time. Those time periods being
modern and postmodern. The way that I see how the author attempted to help me perceive how to
look at the person with an illness is by causing for me to see from the viewpoint of the client how

Analysis Of The Wounded Warrior Memoir
From January 8 to January 10, 2014, the first Wounded Warrior Pacific Invitational was held in
Honolulu, Hawaii. Hosted at the Pearl Harbor–Hickam bases, this event included a total of 150
athletes. The Wounded Warrior Pacific Invitational was the largest joint–service competition outside
of the annual Warrior Games. At the event, servicemembers from the Special Operations Command,
Army, Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Marines took part in the various competitions.
The goal of these events is to highlight the wounded warrior initiative and showcase the potential
that wounded warriors have to take part in everyday life like athletic events. To support this goal,
sailors throughout Hawaii volunteered their time and energy to help wounded warriors get to each
event. These sponsors created a lasting impact by providing support and cheering on the
competitors.

The Wounded Knee Massacre
Wounded Knee was a terrible event in US history. It showed how the US government didn't
understand the Native Americans and treated them badly and unfairly.
Big Foot was the chief of a subtribe of the Lakota called Miniconjou. He was very old and had
pneumonia. He was taking his tribe to the Pine Ridge Reservation in south–western South Dakota.
Most of the women and children in Big Foot's tribe were family members of the warriors who had
died in the Plains wars. The Indians had agreed to live on small reservations after the US
government took away their land. At the Wounded Knee camp, there were 120 men and 230 women
and children. At the camp, they were guarded by the US Seventh Cavalry lead by Major Samuel
Whitside. During the year 1890 a new dance called the Ghost Dance started among the Sioux and
other tribes. The Sioux's Christ figure, Wovoka, was said to have flown over Sitting Bull and Short
Bull and taught them the dance and the songs. The Ghost Dance legend was that the next spring,
when the grass was high, the Earth would be covered with a new layer of soil, covering all white
men. Wild buffalo and horses would return and there would be swift running water, sweet grass, and
new trees. All Indians who danced the Ghost dance would be floating in the air when the new soil
was being laid down and would be saved. The Ghost Dance was made illegal after the Wounded
Knee massacre though. On December 28, 1890 the Seventh Cavalry saw Big Foot moving his tribe

Wounded Knee Genocide
The international community has the obligation of respecting the autonomy of sovereign states.
Genocide has occurred all over the place a different time periods throughout history and throughout
the world, whatever the case may be it is not right and this can be eliminated. Genocide has been
occurring all over the world in different places and time periods. From, Iraq to Canada, and from
America to Germany. Involving the United States Government, Christopher Columbus, and Hitler.
Massacre, holocaust, mass execution, slaughter, ethnic cleansing, and genocide. All the names give
away how inhumane this "procedure" is. The meaning of the word "Genocide" is "The deliberate
and systematic destruction of a racial, political or cultural group." (Webster) or "The deliberate
killing of people who belong to a particular racial, political, or cultural group" (Webster). Lawyer
Rapael Lemkin introduces the term "genocide" created from the Greek word "geno" meaning family

1. Why does the article open with a quote from Black Elk? The quote from Black Elk set the stage
for the article by describing his memory of events that took place in Wounded Knee. He mentions
the sacred hoop is broken and scattered, there is not center any longer, and the sacred tree is dead,
which fits in with inclusivity as well as holistic reality. The massacre of 300 Sioux Indians along
with the loss of their land, shattered the hoop of their existence and all they believed in. Their world
built on harmony with all things was shattered by the white mans greed and control of all things. 2.
How did news coverage of the Occupation of Wounded Knee try to minimize the seriousness of the
event? News coverage tried to minimize the seriousness of the event by including headlines of
mockery, along with trying to discredit the rhetors. 3. Explain how each of the following factors had
an impact on what the AIM leaders wanted to accomplish: (a) timing; (b) demands; (c) intercultural
barriers; and (d) institutionalized racism. a) Timing – Other social movements throughout the 1960's
had been met with successful confrontation through occupation, but by 1972 such dramas may have
worn thin or no longer had the same effect because of overuse. b) Demands – Listed as "excessive"
followed the established patterns of previous protest groups and "had escalated far beyond the
ability of the authorities to act," meaning demands were so extreme by which making them
unattainable. c) Intercultural barriers – because of cultural differences white Americans did not
understand Native American frustration impart due to this generation of urban Native Americans,
first to be educated, found it difficult to communicate in a language White Americans understood. d)
Institutionalized racism – Made it difficult for Native Americans to get their perspectives across to
the white American; their opportunities for communicating these perspectives were marginalized by
the Native Americans societal and economic positon put in place by the white American's and
included typical stereotypes such as "noble" or "ruthless" savages. 4. Why do the authors want to

Analysis Of Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee This movie was pleasantly surprising. It was an enjoyable watch
and told a story that kept the plot line and details close to the real history of the Sioux Indians' lives,
starting with The Battle at Little Big Horn.
The movie, filmed in 2007, depicts the lives of the Sioux Indians as if they were not a people that
mattered. In the movie, they say, "the Indians lived like the poorest of whites." They were pushed
around and told repeatedly they could not stay on their own land. This was due to the Westward
Expansion in the United States at the time. By 1876, most of the American Indians had already been
forcibly relocated to reservation land. Red Cloud, a Sioux leader, settled with some of his tribe on
the Sioux Reservation of the Dakota Territory and took the aid of the US government. When this
happened, other Sioux leaders, such as Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, saw it as a surrender. These
leaders refused to assimilate and went on to live life in their traditional way. Unfortunately, this all
changed when the US found gold on Sioux land in the Black Hills. The movie tells the story of the
Sioux Indians fight to try to remain in control of their own lives and stay on their own land. Then
when they no longer can, the movie shows their path to surrendering to the whites and assimilating
into the American culture. One way the Indians demonstrated their resistance to changing in the
ways of the white man was at the Battle of Little

Wounded Knee Analysis
Elliot Erwitt's piece titled Wounded Knee, South Dakota (Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1969) is a
photograph of a traditional church standing alone atop a small hill. The seemingly ordinary black
and white picture stands out amongst the surrounding pieces due to the fact that a building is the
focal point. The piece illustrates a presence of a higher power due to which most of the components
are pointed toward the church. Not only that, but there is also a metaphorical representation of
heaven and hell by cause of coloration and even placement of specific articles in the piece. The
photograph enveloped me into a brief essence of sanctity in behalf of the articles surrounding the
church. The placement of everything in the picture seemed so perfect that I believed it had to have
been artificial. The clouds draw the eye toward the tip of the spire where a cross sits, the building is
standing on the highest elevation of earth–as if to reach the heavens, and all the more, the two

The upper portion of the piece, from the bottom of the church and up, is distinctively lighter than the
rest. Heaven is associated with light and a higher power, being what the upper half conveys. With
the Catholic church residing in the top half, being a place of worship to God, it allows one to
conclude there being a depiction of heaven. The lower half of the piece, from the ground and below,
is of a darker nature. Not only that, but the dry, patchy grass resembling death adds to the overall
theme of the lower portion favoring hell. Heaven is claimed to be above the clouds and hell is said
to be below the earth such as the same placement in the photograph. The exposure is ultimately
embodying as a descriptor of the two "locations of afterlife." In other words, it appears that just the
place of worship is displaying religion, but ultimately the whole shot is exhibiting

The Best Selling Book ' Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee ' An...
The best selling book "Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee – An Indian History of the American West"
was written in 1971 by Dee Brown. It is a textbook account of much of the Native American
experience in the era of European contact through the western expansion years early in United
States history. It is comprehensive to a point, it does not completely tell the history of every tribe
that had contact with the white people and the American government. What it does cover, to the best
of my knowledge, is historically accurate. Being an historical account it reports the events from a
historian's perspective. Although it is somewhat biased, it is from a Native American historian's
perspective, it doesn't attempt to dramatize the history. The text is pragmatic. The stating of the facts
is boring and almost tedious in places throughout the book. It contains no dialogue with the
exceptions of quotes meant to give credence to an account. There are parts of the book that, to me,
read like the bible book of Genesis, as it gives names and family stories in a similar fashion. An
example of this can be found in chapter 7 which reads: "Among them were Tall Bull, White Horse,
Gray Beard, Bull Bear, and other Dog Soldier chiefs. The great war leader Roman Nose also went
along, and so did the two half–breed Bent brothers. ...Among the few who did was George Bent. He
especially wanted to see Black Kettle's niece, Magpie, and not long after their reunion he made her
his wife." 1 The

Wounded Platoon Summary
The video I chose to watch was "The Wounded Platoon". The population related to this video that
faces difficulties in terms of access to health care are United States veterans. This video specifically
mentions veterans of the Third Platoon, who were deployed to fight during the Iraq War. One
overarching difficulty this population has in terms of access to health care is a lack of wanting to
come forward. One soldier stated that those who came forward with symptoms of Post–Traumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD) feared ridicule. PTSD is very stigmatized, especially in the military, where
it is stated that coming forward with symptoms of PTSD could be considered "a sign of weakness".
Many veterans claimed they did not need help and reported no mental duress. However, it was
shown that many of these veterans were self–medicating. It was stated that there was an over three
thousand percent increase in Fort Carson soldiers failing drug tests after the Iraq War. ... Show more

Ninety percent of deaths in combat or in a shooting occur before the victims ever make it to a

Lessons Learned From the Massacre at Wounded Knee Essays
Introduction
The massacre at Wounded Knee was the last action in a long and bloody war that pitted Native
American Indians against U.S Military forces. For roughly 300 years the two sides had been in
constant conflict across America in a battle for land, resources, and ultimately; freedom. This final
massacre solidified the American hold on the west and closed the final chapter on a way of life that
can never be brought back. Lakota Indians, having learned of the death of Sitting Bull started to
move towards Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in hopes of finding protection from Red Cloud.
However, the harsh South Dakota winter weather had different plans, causing Chief Big Foot to
become extremely ill. The Lakota came across cavalry forces ... Show more content on

In 1841, that myth was shatter when a group of sixty–nine people moving towards California and
Oregon entered into Lakota lands and passed through unscathed. Once word arrived back east of the
their success, people started to jump on wagon trains and venture west for land and prosperity.
During the time period from 1841–1848 the Lakota never bothered any of the settlers passing
through, even though they were carving roads over the grasslands and killing buffalo in the area. 3
The discovery of gold in California changed all of that. Starting in 1848, the stream of settlers
"became a raging river" and in 1850 nearly fifty–five thousand people crossed through Lakota lands
via the Overland Trail. 4 The Lakota did nothing even though increasing numbers of settlers along
with their cattle were starting to decimate the prairie grasslands as they passed through on their way
westward. The final issue that led the Lakota to push the settlers out of their lands was that of
disease. The Native Americans had never been exposed to Asian cholera, smallpox, and the measles.
European settlers brought these with them as they traveled west and infected Lakota causing many
of them to experience horrible fevers and suffering before dying without any way of being helped. 5
The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851 guaranteed sovereignty to the Lakota as long as they allowed
settlers to pass through on the Oregon Trail unharmed.6 At this point, the Lakota had enough and
decided to take

One event brought death to over 225 Sioux Indians on December 29, 1890. The Sioux Indians were
fighting against themselves until Wovoka created the Ghost Dance Ritual, which is for the peace of
the Indians. Due to the frequent use of the rituals the Americans thought of it as a sign of hostility

The Story of Wounded Knee Essays
"What have the 'hostiles done? It seems to be so far a white man's war" (Qtd. in Hines 30). The
Indians that were killed at Wounded Knee committed no crime on their reservation in the time
before the battle (Hines 36), they only practiced religion. The Ghost Dance movement resulted in a
massacre at Wounded Knee which had a lasting impact on many people.
The religion of the Ghost Dance started with a man named Wovoka. On January 1, 1889, he had a
'vision' during a solar eclipse in Nevada (Peterson 27). It brought a message of hope to the
oppressed Indians of only the Indians living. The Indians called Wovoka the 'Messiah' ("The Ghost
Dance" par. 1) and it was believed that he would bring a "day of deliverance" (Phillips 16) to the ...

The Ghost Dance gave many Indians hope, and that hope drove around three thousand Indians to the
Pine Lake Reservation also known as the Stronghold (Phillips par. 5). In response to the Indians'
movement and the Ghost Dance, the government sent half of the U.S. army to the Indian reservation
(Robertson par. 3). The government felt threatened by the mass of Indians. To lessen the threat, the
government decided to target who they thought were the leaders of the Ghost Dance.
Sitting Bull, the Hunkpapa Lakota chief (Robertson par. 5) was decided a threat by the government,
even though he was not a Ghost Dance leader (Koster 25). On December 15, 1890 (Robertson par.
5), Indian police came to arrest Sitting Bull. He agreed to go with the police peacefully (Flood 34),
but the other Indians in his tribe did not and tried to stop the arrest. Catch–the–Bear shouted, "Let us
protect our chief!" He then proceeded to fire his gun at Bull Head, an Indian police, hitting him in
the side. Bull Head's weapon discharged while he was turned around and hit Sitting Bull in the
chest. Then Red Tomahawk finished the struggle by shooting Sitting Bull in the back of the head
(Phillips 18). The Indian police even shot Sitting Bull's as he begged for his life. It isn't recalled who
shot the son since many officers fired at once (Flood 35).

Clutter is a big problem for many people. At a lecture that I gave, I asked for a show of hands
regarding how many people had problems with clutter and disorganization. I was surprised to find
that at least half the people raised their hands.
One of my clients told me that she was trying to help her sister get back on her feet after her sister
had been laid up with an illness and lost her job. Her sister's house had always been a mess, and had
become so filled with clutter that there was no place to walk or sit.

She subscribes to many magazines but, being the mother of three small children, doesn't often have
the time to read them. So the magazines pile up and pile up. Carrie hopes at some point to have the
time to read them, but that time never seems to come. When asked why she won't throw them out,
her answer is, "Because there might be something important in them and I don't want to miss it."
Carrie fears missing out on some important piece of information – information that may give her the
peace she is seeking. It makes her feel safer and in control to have all the magazines around her with
their important information, even if she never gets to read them.
When we don't feel safe on the inner level, then we try to make ourselves feel safe on the outer
level, and clutter is one way of doing that. Whether it's things, such as hair dryers, or information,
such as in magazines and newspapers, clutterers do not trust that they will have what they need. In
addition, clutterers may be resistant people who see messiness and clutter as a way of not being
controlled by someone who wants them to be neat.

A wounded healer is a person who heals others because they, themselves are wounded. I could not

like that. But this pain is my strength. It is what gives me the ability to support and understand

Helping others means more to me than helping myself. It stems from my own past experiences of

In Dubious Battle Character Analysis
Motivated purely by self–interest, Mac the principal organizer, admits from the very beginning that
the situation is hopelessly stacked against the strikers because the growers are unusually well
organized and have commanding resources at their disposal. Despite this fact he is willing to risk
lives in pursuit of what he deems a greater cause. This inherent selfishness breeds the greed and
inhumanity that Steinbeck is so keen to expose in his novel, In Dubious Battle. Mac shows his true,
selfish and greedy self when he takes advantage of situations as a chance for his own gain: to further
his cause, manipulate the strikers' emotions, steam up the crowd, and gain the public's sympathy.

Mac marvels constantly at how "well–organized" the Torgas Valley powers are, with power
distributed into three tight–fisted hands (89). But aside from this, Mac shows his skills at
manipulating the public in order to get what he needs. He's not really concerned about getting justice
for Anderson; he just needs a place for his men to stay.
Mac displays his legitimate and egocentric self when Mac uses the death of his friend, Joy, to sway
the emotions of the men in the camp. Doc Burton cannot believe this; however, Mac explains "that's
the way it is" (160). Mac goes on further claiming that Joy would have loved being used to
manipulate the emotions of the strikers and the public, because it's work he believed in. Mac mounts
the platform, positions Jim's body in full view of the crowd, and then begins his eulogy to rouse the
troops to battle. Mac's belief that there's no such thing as "personal feelings," as well as his idea that
this is what Jim would've wanted, makes it hard to escape the disgusting feeling that Mac has no
sense of sympathy or humanity (160).
Mac reveals his authentic and grasping self when he makes the plan to escape once things go south.

Essay On The Wounded Knee Massacre
Wounded Knee Massacre: What components of conflict led to the Wounded Knee Massacre? The
purpose of this paper is to analyze the conflicts that caused the Wounded Knee Massacre. On
December 29,1890, at Wounded Knee Creek located southwest South Dakota is where a tragic
incident occurred. Nearly half the victims killed were women and children. About 250 to 300 people
lost their lives to a battle due to a religious dance, miscommunicated traditional culture, and
religious conflict. The Indians had a big obstacle to get over. Life was hard for the Lakota. The
animal population faded, the native buffaloes, which they used very often for their needs started to
vanish, and the Lakota, who used to wander about freely, are now pushed into a small reservation.
Life was very bleak. But, when the Ghost Dance arises in the reservation, those troubles drift away.
But what they did not know, is that this spiritual movement will be a motive to many deaths. The
Ghost Dance is a religious dance ceremony in which the indians would stand in a circle, hold hands,
dance, chant and yell. The Ghost Dance was created from a vision of Jack Wilson, who is part of an
Indian tribe. It blends Christianity and Native beliefs. This new religion stated that if they would
celebrate the lives of the Messiah in dance, and live an ethical life, you were promised to have some
of your worries lifted and you and your ancestors would reunite in a world of paradise. That means

injured, he has just set off an IED. His lower limbs are missing and a mangled mess of flesh has
replaced his legs. He is bleeding profusely and becoming hypovolemic and will soon enter
irreversible shock if not treated. All you hear is rifle rounds cracking over your head, incoming
mortar fire and the agonizing screams for help form the wounded troop. The detrimental
psychological aftermath of such an experience can be extremely traumatic. Now imagine the same
scenario but in this instance the wounded troop is female. Even though both scenarios are traumatic
regardless of the the gender of the casualty. As males we are culturally conditioned to have a
protective mechanism over females. I would feel the need to place myself and the mission at
jeopardy not only to protect but to save a female in distress. In this environment this is not the ideal
course of action, as it will possibly end up costing your life and be detrimental to the
accomplishment of the mission. I agree that women have the right serve their county in the armed
forces, should they choose to do so. There are plenty military occupations for women ranging from
positions in the medical, logistic, to the intelligence fields–but I strongly agree that combat arms in
not one of them. Women have a different physiological structure than men. "Compared with men,
women have increased pelvic width, forefoot pronation, heel

Hiroshima Point Of View

  • 1. Hiroshima Point Of View This novel was written in a unique format in which the author, John Hersey, used third person point of view to introduce six ordinary people who have experienced a horrendous phenomenon. The first chapter depicts what occurred before the bomb struck. At the time, Hiroshima was conducting several night air–raid warnings which prevented any civilians from getting their sleep. There were daily weather runs conducted by the Americans which the Japanese disregarded for they only worried over the B–29s. Father Kiyoshi Tanimoto, minister of the Hiroshima Methodist Church, rose at five o'clock to prepare for a day's journey to Koi, a city away from Hiroshima. Father Tanimoto and a friend had to transfer Tanimoto's daughter belongings to friend's house ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout each individual's journey, the destruction and misery that the bomb created can be observed. Asuna Park is where almost all the the novel's individuals meet. Father Kiyoshi Tanimoto rose from his hideout and immediately witnessed the destruction of Hiroshima. Fortunately, he met his uninjured wife after the bomb, but their encounter was brief for their circumstances had them departing already. Father Tanimoto later took refuge in Park Asano, and unintentionally became the leader of all the wounded. Toshiko Sasaki remained unconscious for at least three hours, unable to move. She scream for help until finally three men came to her rescue. He left leg was severely wounded, and she was later stationed at a shelter with three other damaged people. Dr. Masakazu Fujii was able to dislodge himself from the timber and, along with other doctors, nurses, and civilians, sought shelter from underneath the bridge. On the way to the bridge, Dr. Fujii briefly noticed the huge fire that seemed to consume the surrounding areas. Feeling that the danger has passed, Dr. Fujii journeyed to his home and later realized his family's home has collapsed. At the same moment, Hatsuyo Nakamura had discovered her three children were alive and well. One of her neighbor persuaded Nakamura to take refuge at Asuna Park. The park was still intact which could be used as a cover against any future possible attacks. While preparing for the migration, she saw Father Wilhelm Kleinsorge wondering around bewildered. Father Kleinsorge first assisted out of dangerous environments, dislodged several people, then decided to take shelter in Asuna Park. Before their departure, Father Kleinsorge and other priests were forced to ignore some of the cries. Even if the priests attempted to aid those in need, the circumstances prevented it which resulted in thousands of unnecessary casualties. Dr. Terufumi Sasaki was overwhelmed with ... • 3. The Massacre At Wounded Knee Analysis The Massacre at Wounded Knee First, and foremost, the battle between the white man and the Indian Nation is a poignant historical portrayal of what took place at the Wounded Knee Massacre. It was all set in motion in the "Moon When the Deer Shed Their Horns", a Sioux moon of December. The Sioux were so distraught about the assassination of Sitting Bull; they could not muster an uprising. The Ghost Dance was their only hope to eradicate the white man. "There was no hope on earth, and God seemed to have forgotten us. Some said they saw the Son of God; others did not see Him. If he had come, He would do some great things as He had done before. We doubted it because we had seen neither Him nor His works. The people did not know; they did not care. They snatched at hope. They screamed like crazy men to Him for mercy. They caught at the promise they heard He had made. The white men were frightened and called for soldiers. We had begged for life, and the white man thought we wanted theirs. We heard the soldiers were coming. We did not fear. We hope that we could tell them our troubles and get help. A white man said the soldiers wanted to kill us. We did not believe it, but some were frightened and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. Battle Of Wounded Knee Battle Of Wounded Knee The battle of Wounded Knee was considered one of America's most unforgettable moments in history. It all started in December 15 1890, when reservation police tried to arrest famous Sioux chief, "Sitting Bull" whom they mistakened for a "Ghost Dancer" and he was killed during the process of the arrest, infuriating the Indians at Pine Ridge. The U.S government worried about the growth of the "Ghost Dance" at Pine Ridge, which the Indians thought was a way to make the gods create the world anew, and eliminate all non– believers or non–Indians, and this made the U.S in high alert. The U.S government knew they had to do something about the Indians' Ghost Dance, so in December 29, the U.S sent out the 7th Cavalry of America, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Analysis Of Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee For the critical analyses paper, I chose to read the book entitled as "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown. This book is a non–fiction historical genre and was public in 1970 by New York: Holt, Rinehart & Winston. The Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is a sad story based on true events that portray the massacre of the first American Indians during the nineteenth century. This book details many battles and many conflicts that Indians had with American whites that resulted in the deaths of a bunch of important native chiefs. Even though, many of them did not die during the battle. This book gave us a better understanding of who really was the American Indian and how they were wronged by the white people because of their lands. This book is told chronologically by tribes, chief, and events. The first chapter is the only one that might have a little different from the others. It basically a reflection of how different groups of Europeans treated the American Indians that they encountered in America when they arrived. Columbus and his men were received with honor by the Indians and he used those kindnesses to take advantage of the Indians and kidnaped many men, women, and children to be a slave in Spain. In contrary to this, The English used "subtler methods" and were able to live in peace with Indians for several years. As a said previously, the story is told chronologically, so the following chapters are about the battles and the chiefs of the tribe. On those chapters ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Persuasive Speech About Civil War Conservatives, Feuillants, Jacobins and the People of France, the time for peace has come. Our once great nation is now deeply wounded and divided. If we want to heal this nation, we must first heal ourselves. We must be wounded healers, instead of the wounded warriors that we are. We must set aside our differences and work together to make France into the great nation it once was. The revolution is over! I urge you to put down your weapons and stop. Look around at all the great work we have done. We the people, finally have a voice, we have the power. "Civil war is harmful to both parties; for both the conquerors and the conquered, the destruction is the same"(BK 48). If we continue to fight, more blood will cover the streets of France. Blood of our friends and family member, and possibly even our own. We have accomplished what we set out to do already, anything more at this point will only cause us to lose who we were and what we believe. We need to start to reconcile with ourselves and start helping our neighbors. Once we rebuild and focus on the right, we too can become healthy once again. "More men become good through practice, than by nature" (Bk 48). If we continue to focus on the bad, we will only become worse. We the people, the country, even the world deserve better than what we have become and what we have done. If we start to heal ourselves, we then can begin to heal the nation. It is only then we can start to become who we want to become. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When it occurred, it was near wounded knee creek on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in the US state of South Dakota. Surrounding their camp was a force of U.S. troops charged with the responsibility of arresting Big Foot and disarming his warriors. Just before the battle of wounded knee the captured indians had been ordered to give up their arms. During that time a medicine man, dressed painted, executed the maneuvers of the ghost dance. He or some other medicine man approached to within three or four feet from Frederick with a long cheese knife. The medicine man stabbed him during the melee and nearly cut off his nose. The navy coated men around her jumped into action, but were slowly being overtaken. The only attempt she could make to detach herself from the shouts and screams surrounding her, was to focus on the soft rushing of the bubbling river nearby. The land was serene with spring. A sudden Confederate attack in force in the early morning hours caused half–awake Union troops to flee their camps. The battle broke full force at daybreak Sunday, April 6th. At sunrise Lauren heard the thunder of distant musketry. The long roll had called the regiment out, and they did not know what an hour may bring forth. In the book The Wounded Healer (Nouwen, 1972), the author discusses how important it is that a pastor of a church not talk so much about his personal problems so much, for it will not help his parishioners with what they are going through. The same can be said for counselors and therapists who may have been wounded in one way or another at one time in their life. It may be alright to share your struggles, but to share your problems and pains with your client is something that I would think should be avoided. This is where my thought process came together for this paradox, because through wounded healing are there people who are trying to get healed themselves while healing others? PTSD is a term that has gotten a lot of traction or attention in recent years. There was a time where soldiers would come back from war and if they acted differently, say for instance when they came back from World War I they were shell shocked. As an officer, it is my duty to follow the laws and punish those who break the law. I also must follow orders from a higher officer, but for this scenario, my morals come first and I cannot just sit at the base and wait for people to die. My decision is to go to the nearby village and help the as many as I can villagers from the enemies. The plan is to form a group with other soldiers who have the same mindset as me. Wounded Knee:The Ties of Religion and Violence Essay Wounded Knee: The Ties of Religion and Violence On the morning of December 29, 1890, many Sioux Indians (estimated at above two hundred) died at the hands of the United States Army near Wounded Knee Creek on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The Indians were followers of the Ghost Dance religion, devised by Wovoka, a Paiute prophet, as a spiritual outlet for Indian repression by whites. The United States Army set out to intercept this group of Native Americans because they performed the controversial Ghost Dance. For example, the militant leaders Short Bull and Kicking Bear attended the Ghost Dance and went home with the interpretation they should proactively rid the continent of whites through any means necessary (Malinowski 467). The Sioux had always been recognized as warlike, but now with the Ghost Dance, they were viewed as "half–crazed 'savages'" who set out to be "demonic killers" (Moses 342). With this misunderstanding, the Ghost Dance received a bad reputation. If the Sioux did any killing in the name of the Ghost Dance, all tribes associated with the religion were also seen in a negative way. The Sioux also misunderstood Wovoka's teaching that a gun could not kill him. He unknowingly misled the Sioux who took the teaching literally and adorned what they thought to be bulletproof shirts. The Sioux believed that a bullet physically could not harm them, and this gave them false confidence. Many felt themselves to be invincible and this resulted in disaster when shots were fired at them. The U. S. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cold War Family Letters Research Paper Cold War Family Letters – By Mitchell Rickards September 14th To My Dear Mother, Father and Siblings, It's been quite some time since I wrote to you all last. I am so grateful for the two or three letters that I have received from you. The letters have helped me so much through these tough time and knowing once this war is finally over know I can return to a loving family. I've been in Maryland since the last time I wrote a letter to you and have had to deal with few injuries and casualties in two very hard battles in Maryland and fortunately I came out with no diseases. I'm now sitting down on the ground late at night on guard and having to write this letter as fast as possible to be able to let you guys know how I am travelling and to inform you of the progress. My hearing has declined since I left home and isn't getting much better with all the loud noises going off around me, and my health hasn't been the greatest since being at Harper's Ferry, but I'm sure once this war is all over I will recover fully or will minimal loss of hearing. People think being a medic is easy but it is actually rather hard, I rather not be one but it is helping other people out so I feel obliged to help out I think. I can tell you one thing, if I ever live to get back home, I won't be doing another one I can tell you that. • 29. What is Truly Seriving? Truly serving means "willingness to set aside our personal agenda and serve others on their terms," and an "eagerness to (...) take proactive steps to find opportunities to serve" (Soper, 1) Service has many layers, including giving up "the normal progression of life–high school, college, work–to do something whose end was civic" (Mangone). However, service generally boils down to four main categories: giving a part of yourself, committing yourself to a cause, believing in something greater than yourself, and asking for help. The men and women of the United States military exemplify each of these categories through their dedication and sacrifice. They are the epitome of service, sacrificing life and limb to protect our freedom. The Wounded Warrior Project offers a number of programs, including Warriors to Work, Peer Support, Family Retreats, and many others to serve veterans after they have returned from the line of duty. Service means giving a part of yourself. For Army Staff Sergeant Chris Gordon this was literal; Chris lost his right leg while serving in Iraq. On March 13, 2005, he was participating in a routine patrol in the Iraqi city of Tal–Afiar. According to Chris, "They said we were going to take part in a search. By that time, we'd been in Iraq for six months, and we had done a lot of searches like that. • 31. Stigmas In The Wounded Storyteller There are individual stories that come from a person's experience with illness. There are many stigmas that are associated with certain diseases that in turn cause for the individuals with the illness to be perceived in a certain manner. In the book by Arthur W. Frank, titled "The Wounded Storyteller,"I am challenged in the way that I will chose to perceive the illness that someone is living with. In my opinion, the author is really calling me to change my mindset on how I look at the people who have an illness. I am being challenged to look at the individual by themselves without allowing the illness that they have to cause me to forget that they are more than their illness. The concept of reminding myself that the client is more than his/her illness is something that I must make a conscious effort to do in my career as a nurse. The author shows us the readers how to look at these individuals through their eyes. He states that as the individuals tell their stories through their bodies they are able to then form a new viewpoint of themselves in correlation to the world. He shows us how these illness stories can be explained through the body. Lastly, he informs us about two different time periods of how illness is regarded during that time. Those time periods being modern and postmodern. The way that I see how the author attempted to help me perceive how to look at the person with an illness is by causing for me to see from the viewpoint of the client how the disease ... • 37. The Wounded Knee Massacre Wounded Knee was a terrible event in US history. It showed how the US government didn't understand the Native Americans and treated them badly and unfairly. Big Foot was the chief of a subtribe of the Lakota called Miniconjou. He was very old and had pneumonia. He was taking his tribe to the Pine Ridge Reservation in south–western South Dakota. Most of the women and children in Big Foot's tribe were family members of the warriors who had died in the Plains wars. The Indians had agreed to live on small reservations after the US government took away their land. At the Wounded Knee camp, there were 120 men and 230 women and children. At the camp, they were guarded by the US Seventh Cavalry lead by Major Samuel Whitside. During the year 1890 a new dance called the Ghost Dance started among the Sioux and other tribes. The Sioux's Christ figure, Wovoka, was said to have flown over Sitting Bull and Short Bull and taught them the dance and the songs. The Ghost Dance legend was that the next spring, when the grass was high, the Earth would be covered with a new layer of soil, covering all white men. Wild buffalo and horses would return and there would be swift running water, sweet grass, and new trees. All Indians who danced the Ghost dance would be floating in the air when the new soil was being laid down and would be saved. The Ghost Dance was made illegal after the Wounded Knee massacre though. • 41. Wounded Knee Case Study 1. Why does the article open with a quote from Black Elk? The quote from Black Elk set the stage for the article by describing his memory of events that took place in Wounded Knee. He mentions the sacred hoop is broken and scattered, there is not center any longer, and the sacred tree is dead, which fits in with inclusivity as well as holistic reality. The massacre of 300 Sioux Indians along with the loss of their land, shattered the hoop of their existence and all they believed in. Their world built on harmony with all things was shattered by the white mans greed and control of all things. 2. How did news coverage of the Occupation of Wounded Knee try to minimize the seriousness of the event? News coverage tried to minimize the seriousness of the event by including headlines of mockery, along with trying to discredit the rhetors. 3. • 45. Analysis Of Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee This movie was pleasantly surprising. It was an enjoyable watch and told a story that kept the plot line and details close to the real history of the Sioux Indians' lives, starting with The Battle at Little Big Horn. The movie, filmed in 2007, depicts the lives of the Sioux Indians as if they were not a people that mattered. In the movie, they say, "the Indians lived like the poorest of whites." They were pushed around and told repeatedly they could not stay on their own land. This was due to the Westward Expansion in the United States at the time. By 1876, most of the American Indians had already been forcibly relocated to reservation land. Red Cloud, a Sioux leader, settled with some of his tribe on the Sioux Reservation of the Dakota Territory and took the aid of the US government. When this happened, other Sioux leaders, such as Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, saw it as a surrender. These leaders refused to assimilate and went on to live life in their traditional way. Unfortunately, this all changed when the US found gold on Sioux land in the Black Hills. The movie tells the story of the Sioux Indians fight to try to remain in control of their own lives and stay on their own land. Then when they no longer can, the movie shows their path to surrendering to the whites and assimilating into the American culture. One way the Indians demonstrated their resistance to changing in the ways of the white man was at the Battle of Little ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The seemingly ordinary black and white picture stands out amongst the surrounding pieces due to the fact that a building is the focal point. The piece illustrates a presence of a higher power due to which most of the components are pointed toward the church. Not only that, but there is also a metaphorical representation of heaven and hell by cause of coloration and even placement of specific articles in the piece. The photograph enveloped me into a brief essence of sanctity in behalf of the articles surrounding the church. The placement of everything in the picture seemed so perfect that I believed it had to have been artificial. The lower half of the piece, from the ground and below, is of a darker nature. Not only that, but the dry, patchy grass resembling death adds to the overall theme of the lower portion favoring hell. Heaven is claimed to be above the clouds and hell is said to be below the earth such as the same placement in the photograph. • 53. The Best Selling Book ' Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee ' An... The best selling book "Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee – An Indian History of the American West" was written in 1971 by Dee Brown. It is a textbook account of much of the Native American experience in the era of European contact through the western expansion years early in United States history. It is comprehensive to a point, it does not completely tell the history of every tribe that had contact with the white people and the American government. What it does cover, to the best of my knowledge, is historically accurate. Being an historical account it reports the events from a historian's perspective. Although it is somewhat biased, it is from a Native American historian's perspective, it doesn't attempt to dramatize the history. The text is pragmatic. The stating of the facts is boring and almost tedious in places throughout the book. It contains no dialogue with the exceptions of quotes meant to give credence to an account. There are parts of the book that, to me, read like the bible book of Genesis, as it gives names and family stories in a similar fashion. An example of this can be found in chapter 7 which reads: "Among them were Tall Bull, White Horse, Gray Beard, Bull Bear, and other Dog Soldier chiefs. The great war leader Roman Nose also went along, and so did the two half–breed Bent brothers. ...Among the few who did was George Bent. The population related to this video that faces difficulties in terms of access to health care are United States veterans. This video specifically mentions veterans of the Third Platoon, who were deployed to fight during the Iraq War. One overarching difficulty this population has in terms of access to health care is a lack of wanting to come forward. One soldier stated that those who came forward with symptoms of Post–Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) feared ridicule. PTSD is very stigmatized, especially in the military, where it is stated that coming forward with symptoms of PTSD could be considered "a sign of weakness". For roughly 300 years the two sides had been in constant conflict across America in a battle for land, resources, and ultimately; freedom. This final massacre solidified the American hold on the west and closed the final chapter on a way of life that can never be brought back. During the time period from 1841–1848 the Lakota never bothered any of the settlers passing through, even though they were carving roads over the grasslands and killing buffalo in the area. 3 The discovery of gold in California changed all of that. Starting in 1848, the stream of settlers "became a raging river" and in 1850 nearly fifty–five thousand people crossed through Lakota lands via the Overland Trail. 4 The Lakota did nothing even though increasing numbers of settlers along with their cattle were starting to decimate the prairie grasslands as they passed through on their way westward. The final issue that led the Lakota to push the settlers out of their lands was that of disease. The Native Americans had never been exposed to Asian cholera, smallpox, and the measles. European settlers brought these with them as they traveled west and infected Lakota causing many of them to experience horrible fevers and suffering before dying without any way of being helped. 5 The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851 guaranteed sovereignty to the Lakota as long as they allowed settlers to pass through on the Oregon Trail unharmed.6 At this point, the Lakota had enough and decided to take ... • 67. The Story of Wounded Knee Essays "What have the 'hostiles done? It seems to be so far a white man's war" (Qtd. in Hines 30). The Indians that were killed at Wounded Knee committed no crime on their reservation in the time before the battle (Hines 36), they only practiced religion. The Ghost Dance movement resulted in a massacre at Wounded Knee which had a lasting impact on many people. The religion of the Ghost Dance started with a man named Wovoka. On January 1, 1889, he had a 'vision' during a solar eclipse in Nevada (Peterson 27). It brought a message of hope to the oppressed Indians of only the Indians living. The Indians called Wovoka the 'Messiah' ("The Ghost Dance" par. 1) and it was believed that he would bring a "day of deliverance" (Phillips 16) to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Ghost Dance gave many Indians hope, and that hope drove around three thousand Indians to the Pine Lake Reservation also known as the Stronghold (Phillips par. 5). In response to the Indians' movement and the Ghost Dance, the government sent half of the U.S. army to the Indian reservation (Robertson par. 3). The government felt threatened by the mass of Indians. To lessen the threat, the government decided to target who they thought were the leaders of the Ghost Dance. Sitting Bull, the Hunkpapa Lakota chief (Robertson par. 5) was decided a threat by the government, even though he was not a Ghost Dance leader (Koster 25). On December 15, 1890 (Robertson par. 5), Indian police came to arrest Sitting Bull. He agreed to go with the police peacefully (Flood 34), but the other Indians in his tribe did not and tried to stop the arrest. Catch–the–Bear shouted, "Let us protect our chief!" He then proceeded to fire his gun at Bull Head, an Indian police, hitting him in the side. Bull Head's weapon discharged while he was turned around and hit Sitting Bull in the chest. Then Red Tomahawk finished the struggle by shooting Sitting Bull in the back of the head (Phillips 18). The Indian police even shot Sitting Bull's as he begged for his life. It isn't recalled who shot the son since many officers fired at once (Flood 35). Another target was Big Foot–the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Thesis On Clutterer Declutter Your Home By Allison Palmer Mar 13, 2011 Clutter is a big problem for many people. At a lecture that I gave, I asked for a show of hands regarding how many people had problems with clutter and disorganization. I was surprised to find that at least half the people raised their hands. One of my clients told me that she was trying to help her sister get back on her feet after her sister had been laid up with an illness and lost her job. Her sister's house had always been a mess, and had become so filled with clutter that there was no place to walk or sit. My client, Rebecca, offered to buy her sister a car if she would clean up her house. Rebecca even offered to help her sister clean up the house. Rebecca was shocked when her sister ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She subscribes to many magazines but, being the mother of three small children, doesn't often have the time to read them. So the magazines pile up and pile up. Carrie hopes at some point to have the time to read them, but that time never seems to come. When asked why she won't throw them out, her answer is, "Because there might be something important in them and I don't want to miss it." Carrie fears missing out on some important piece of information – information that may give her the peace she is seeking. It makes her feel safer and in control to have all the magazines around her with their important information, even if she never gets to read them. When we don't feel safe on the inner level, then we try to make ourselves feel safe on the outer level, and clutter is one way of doing that. Whether it's things, such as hair dryers, or information, such as in magazines and newspapers, clutterers do not trust that they will have what they need. In addition, clutterers may be resistant people who see messiness and clutter as a way of not being controlled by someone who wants them to be neat. HEALING THE ADDICTION TO ... • 71. Personal Narrative: A Wounded Healer A wounded healer is a person who heals others because they, themselves are wounded. I could not relate to a more fitting archetype. I am wounded. I will never able to fully heal. I carry a heavy weight that somehow always pushes down on me even when I think it's been lifted. PTSD is funny like that. But this pain is my strength. It is what gives me the ability to support and understand others; and to heal myself. Helping others means more to me than helping myself. It stems from my own past experiences of knowing how it feels to need someone to just listen and be there, but feel as if I have nowhere to turn. Because of that, I will not let anyone I love feel the same. If a friend is in a time of trouble, I would drop everything, to just let ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. In Dubious Battle Character Analysis Motivated purely by self–interest, Mac the principal organizer, admits from the very beginning that the situation is hopelessly stacked against the strikers because the growers are unusually well organized and have commanding resources at their disposal. Despite this fact he is willing to risk lives in pursuit of what he deems a greater cause. This inherent selfishness breeds the greed and inhumanity that Steinbeck is so keen to expose in his novel, In Dubious Battle. Mac shows his true, selfish and greedy self when he takes advantage of situations as a chance for his own gain: to further his cause, manipulate the strikers' emotions, steam up the crowd, and gain the public's sympathy. Mac depicts his honest and mercenary self when he takes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mac marvels constantly at how "well–organized" the Torgas Valley powers are, with power distributed into three tight–fisted hands (89). But aside from this, Mac shows his skills at manipulating the public in order to get what he needs. He's not really concerned about getting justice for Anderson; he just needs a place for his men to stay. Mac displays his legitimate and egocentric self when Mac uses the death of his friend, Joy, to sway the emotions of the men in the camp. Doc Burton cannot believe this; however, Mac explains "that's the way it is" (160). Mac goes on further claiming that Joy would have loved being used to manipulate the emotions of the strikers and the public, because it's work he believed in. Mac mounts the platform, positions Jim's body in full view of the crowd, and then begins his eulogy to rouse the troops to battle. Mac's belief that there's no such thing as "personal feelings," as well as his idea that this is what Jim would've wanted, makes it hard to escape the disgusting feeling that Mac has no sense of sympathy or humanity (160). Mac reveals his authentic and grasping self when he makes the plan to escape once things go south. In the meeting with London, a young boy interrupts to tell them that there's an injured doctor in the field. The men eagerly follow the young boy, thinking they've found Doc Burton. However, boy outstrips the men and runs into the trees. He leads them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Essay On The Wounded Knee Massacre Wounded Knee Massacre: What components of conflict led to the Wounded Knee Massacre? The purpose of this paper is to analyze the conflicts that caused the Wounded Knee Massacre. On December 29,1890, at Wounded Knee Creek located southwest South Dakota is where a tragic incident occurred. Nearly half the victims killed were women and children. About 250 to 300 people lost their lives to a battle due to a religious dance, miscommunicated traditional culture, and religious conflict. The Indians had a big obstacle to get over. Life was hard for the Lakota. The animal population faded, the native buffaloes, which they used very often for their needs started to vanish, and the Lakota, who used to wander about freely, are now pushed into a small reservation. Life was very bleak. But, when the Ghost Dance arises in the reservation, those troubles drift away. But what they did not know, is that this spiritual movement will be a motive to many deaths. The Ghost Dance is a religious dance ceremony in which the indians would stand in a circle, hold hands, dance, chant and yell. The Ghost Dance was created from a vision of Jack Wilson, who is part of an Indian tribe. It blends Christianity and Native beliefs. This new religion stated that if they would celebrate the lives of the Messiah in dance, and live an ethical life, you were promised to have some of your worries lifted and you and your ancestors would reunite in a world of paradise. That means animals to hunt and native bison ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. The Trauma Of The Wounded Troop Imagine yourself in a war zone, amidst combat. One of your fellow brethren has just been severely injured, he has just set off an IED. His lower limbs are missing and a mangled mess of flesh has replaced his legs. He is bleeding profusely and becoming hypovolemic and will soon enter irreversible shock if not treated. All you hear is rifle rounds cracking over your head, incoming mortar fire and the agonizing screams for help form the wounded troop. The detrimental psychological aftermath of such an experience can be extremely traumatic. Now imagine the same scenario but in this instance the wounded troop is female. Even though both scenarios are traumatic regardless of the the gender of the casualty. As males we are culturally conditioned to have a protective mechanism over females. I would feel the need to place myself and the mission at jeopardy not only to protect but to save a female in distress. In this environment this is not the ideal course of action, as it will possibly end up costing your life and be detrimental to the accomplishment of the mission. I agree that women have the right serve their county in the armed forces, should they choose to do so. There are plenty military occupations for women ranging from positions in the medical, logistic, to the intelligence fields–but I strongly agree that combat arms in not one of them. Women have a different physiological structure than men. "Compared with men, women have increased pelvic width, forefoot pronation, heel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
