Social Darwinism And Natural Selection
It is almost undeniable that the technologies cause rapid changes in human relationships, cultures,
and societies. While it enormously facilitates us in nearly every aspect of our life, such changes also
create consequences that we do not yet realize. Almost all of us know Darwinism and Natural
Selection in the biological field, but we often overlook the similar phenomena in the social aspect.
In fact, resemble to the way we adapt to our physical environment, we also adapt to our social
environment in order to survive and excel in our social relationships. Such adaption is called Social
Darwinism. Because technologies have significantly influenced our social environment, humans are
forced to adapt not only to technologies, but also to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason behind such decision is that unless in urgent situations, other people expect them to text,
the technology that is more prevalent and requires less effort to respond than phone (Turkle 375).
Although "Tara and Leonora are discontent, but do not feel they have a choice. This is where
technology has brought them" (Turkle 375). From those examples, we can easily observe that
because the notions of using certain technology have already became parts of our general social
roles, people can no longer resist the influence of it regardless of our feeling.
In the meantime, we are also forced to mentally adapt popularity and efficiency, the core values of
modern technologies. In analogy, humans evolve (in the bigger and smaller scale) not only because
of our side environment, but also the pressure under the notion that only the fittest among us can
survive. In the comparison between phone calls and texts, texts are not any more technologically
advanced than phone calls are. However, we in general still prefer texts, and intentionally or
unintentionally make others around us use them because of the efficiency behind them. Moreover,
when the popularity of texts is accumulated, such preference becomes further irreversible. Back to
the context of expectations and social roles, we enjoy popularity as the outcome of pluralism, the
conformity of social roles and expectation. In

Sherry Turkle : How Computers Change The Way We Think
Sherry Turkle's essay "How Computers Change the Way We Think" discuss how the growing
popularity of technology is disconnecting us from our brain, loved ones and may be invading our
private life. Electronics might not have been as helpful as we previously thought. Technology has
made it easier for us to fix our mistakes but not learn from them. Turkle had met professors at MIT
when students had transitioned from slide rules to calculators. The teachers had all exclaimed that
students had become sloppy. "Professors insisted that required students maintain a mental sense of
scale, whereas those who relied on calculators made frequent mistakes in orders of magnitude." We
are too quick to have technology solve our everyday problems instead of resolving it ourselves to
better understand our mistake in the first place. We no longer question or have interest in how
technology can handle our tasks, but wonder what else it can accomplish on its own. "When people
say that something is transparent, they mean that they can see how to make it work, not that they
know how it works." Turkle states "For never has our world been more complex, hybridized and
global." Since we become so dependent on items to make our daily lives stress free, could mean
future generations will not know the mental exercise of resolving a conflict without computers. We
have become accustomed to waking up and checking the bright screen first thing in the morning.

Negative Effects Of Technology On Society
Technological advancements have made strides in cultural adaptation to successfully fabricate
easements in life's elaborate, intricate processes in the twenty–first Century. Business prospers with
the use of e–mails to send notes within seconds of writing the thought rather than people having to
engage in an hour–long conference, while the use of Skype has vastly increased how we interact
with people from all over the world. The News was once posted once a day through tabloids or
television, whereas today, the information would be missed and not updated with up–to–the–minute
posts. Present–day children will be interacting with their friends in–real time and do not have to take
time out of their schedule to form plans ahead of time. Consequently, people have abused how the
internet was intended to be which has led to some undeniable, severe consequences. Technology,
therefore, has negatively impacted how society's simplistic, indispensable interactions through
substitution of the human–connection experience, which affects people's attention span shorter than
it used to be, and providing a need for people to receive shallow and instant gratification about how
people view the world. Technological devices, experts assure us, are becoming insensitive, instant
artificial substitutes for the conventional user. Technology, in short, has limited the compassion
people once had to be doing something with someone, but rather it allows people to enter a reality
where they can limit

The Importance Of Technology On Communication
Technology has been a central topic of today's society and is one of the most commonly used
luxuries we have at this age. Yet the benefits and disadvantages have been through much debate over
the years. "More technology or less?" one might ask themselves. However, when you look at the
facts the answer is clearly less would benefit us all. When in a room with someone face to face
interaction is key. One should not be felt separated by such blockades as phones. Technology makes
us more alone due to not encouraging real friends, ruining the conversation, and because it takes
away from the human aspect of life.
Technology makes us more alone because of technology, specifically phones ruin conversation
between families, friends, etc. When phones are used at places like a dinner table it's like an
invisible–wall has been erected, blocking off all social interaction and conversation between these
people. Sherry Turkle describes how "One 15–year–old I interviewed at a summer camp talked
about her reaction when she went out to dinner with her father and he took out his phone to add
"facts" to their conversation. "Daddy," she said, "stop Googling. I want to talk to you" (Turkle).
When out with her Father this girl was trying to have a conversation with her father, and a phone
ruined it. There's no way that phones possibly ruin conversation! Texting and other forms of
communication found on phones clearly encourage conversation between two or more individuals.
Plus, it's people's fault that they don't have long talks because they're most likely have a boring
personality. As Sherry Turkle also reported "Maybe when we talk about conversations being
"boring," such a frequent complaint, we are saying how uncomfortable we are with stillness. We
may categorize it, as Middleton did, as "dull and pedestrian," but we now always have at hand a
world of constant stimulation" (Turkle). Evidently, people should just become more interesting and
talk about something that isn't boring if they want attention. This is obviously wrong as even if
someone is boring phones shouldn't be used as an escape from constant stimulation. Plus this
"boredom" is good for us as human beings and boredom was an intended thing for us to experience.

Technology And Technology Essay
Have you ever had the absolute need to be in constant contact with someone? Some people in
society always have the need to be connected to someone and others really don't have too. Though
some people in society fall somewhere in between these two categories of people. These people
don't have that constant need to be connected to someone or something, yet they do like to be able to
contact someone in just a few seconds if they need too. People that fall in between are ones that
rather talk face to face, but like the fact they have the ability to contact those that are far away, or not
close enough and be able to communicate in person. I have begun to notice that at my school a lot of
people would rather be on their phones than be in contact with the people around them, but in some
cases there are a few that are not "tethered" to their phones. Professor, at MIT, and author Sherry
Turkle discusses the issues of this generation constantly on their phones, computers, and updating
their social media pages in the chapter "Growing Up Tethered" from her book Why We Expect More
from Technology and Less from Each Other. Turkle accurately describes two different types of
people in society who are connected to technology: the first, those who are constantly using their
devices to keep up with everything going on the different social media sites, and the second, those
who only use their devices when necessary. They don't keep up with their social media constantly
and will only talk to

Analysis Of Texting That Saves Lives
After watching both "Texting That Saves Lives" by Nancy Lublin and "Connected, but Alone?" by
Sherry Turkle, I find myself in agreement with Ms. Lublin much more than with Ms. Turkle.
Technology is working relative miracles every day in saving lives. However, I believe that
technology may be better described as enhancing instead of hindering "healthy emotional growth".
Technology has made it possible to have more meaningful relationships with those that would
otherwise be geographically prohibitive. Also, Ms. Turkle talks about utilizing e–mail and texting
during empty time, which is time that is otherwise unoccupied (Turkle, 2012). According to the
Bureau of Labor Statistics, "on the days they worked, 36 percent of employed people age 25 and

Technology and conversation
It is amazing how everyone's life is changing by through us of technology. "Technology by
definition means, the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means
and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as
industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science"(Technology). Today people use
different kinds of technology like: cellphones, iPods, laptops, mp3s, and all of the devices create a
convenient and comfort for every individual. As technology is updating every day, and every second
it is affecting people's lives and changing the pace of everything that relates to humans' routines.
One of the most important things that technology changes is the way everyone communicates.
Technologies create more powerful and effective ways of communication. People are getting used to
a new way to be alone together. Conversation in number and quality decrease as technology replaces
in human interaction. In this article author gives insight into how technology distracts people
without considering what price they are paying and persuades how technology has a huge effect on
people's conversation.

Massachusetts institute, wrote the article "The Flight from Conversation". In this article, Turkle

The Benefits Of New Media And Technology
What is the self in the digital age? One might say that their true online self is on Facebook, or
MySpace, or maybe Instagram. The splintering of the self into multiple versions illustrates a desire
to see what one can be online. Truly, new media and technology has allowed one to find their true
inner self, whether that reflect their real self in real life or not. Yet, not everyone sees these disparate
selves with optimism. Sherry Turkle and Natasha Schüll see the growth of new media and
technology as detrimental to the formation of our true selves and both critically analyze specific
cases where it can be harmful. I, however, disagree with the sentiment that new media and
technology is something inherently harmful. Although they can certainly be misused, the benefits of
these digital innovations can, when applied with critical understanding, outweigh the negatives
brought up by Turkle and Schüll. First, Turkle argues that social media is preventing adolescents
from dedicating time to self–reflection and replacing face to face communication with online
communication. Turkle states in her book, Alone Together, that teens "need time to discover
themselves, time to think. But technology, put in the service of always–on communication and
telegraphic speed and brevity, has changed the rules of engagement with all of this." Here, Turkle
state that since social media is easily accessible and immediate, teenagers will be compelled to
interact online, instead of taking the

"The Flight from Conversation" by Sherry Turkle: A Rhetorical Analysis
In "The Flight from Conversation," published in The New York Times on April 21, 2012, and
written by sociology and personality psychologist, Sherry Turkle, she discusses her concerns on how
the world has chosen technological connection over conversation and physical interaction. Turkle
informs her readers that "Over the past 15 years, I've studied technologies of mobile connection I've
learned that the little devices most of us carry around are so powerful that they change not only what
we do, but also who we are" (Sherry Turkle). Turkle helps develop her argument by building a
connection to her audience and using personal experiences such as what she has observed from her
students in the classroom and the personal experience of others. She also appeals to ethos by
establishing her credibility. However, the author's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

which this information came from. The article lacks credible sources and information from research
other than her own, there are no statistics being used, or any use of quotes from other
authors/researchers. The author is simply stating her opinion with no supporting evidence to back up
her claim. Readers want facts that prove that because technology is on the rise it's deteriorating
communication. The audience needs the numbers or some type of proof, without this, the author's
claim can be counter argued and considered

Argumentative essay against "No Need to Call" by Sherry Turkle
Imagine interacting with a close friend or loved one who lives thousands of miles away. Most
people in today's society use technology to stay in contact with the people they love. Author of "No
Need to Call" (2011), Sherry Turkle strongly feels the use of texting or emailing is replacing how
people interact with each other while on the other hand Jenna Wortham, author of "I Had a Nice
Time with You Tonight. On the App." (2014) opposes Turkle's view. Wortham believes that
messaging actually makes the relationship between two individuals better. To begin with, Turkle

and goals in life. In Sherry Turkle, Selections from "Selections from Alone Together: Why We

It is easier for people to have conversations that they are able to control and achieve desired
outcomes without dealing with real human emotions that can be daunting. People can experience the
little moments of "positivity resonance" through artificial intelligence much easier, faster and at their
leisure. With enough difficulties in the world, people try to avoid getting into relationships that will
give them negative experiences. Some people have experiences which present them with too much
friction with one another. Technology provided us with ways we can experience interactions that
present less friction, interactions like the ones with Artificial intelligence. As Turkle says in her
essay "At the robotic moment, more than ever, our willingness to engage with the inanimate does
not depend on being deceived but wanting to fill in the blanks" (459). With the new technology
advancing, more and more people are willing to give it a try to fulfill their desire of connecting with
others. The use of AI in many ways allows people to explore themselves without the problem with

at all. The irony of it all is that inventions that were supposed to make us connected to people close

Members of society have been so entranced with keeping in touch with everyone, that we often
neglect the people closest to us. We would rather post pictures, write comments, and video chat with
other people than our own family members (Wallis 14). In addition to the obsession over cyber–
space connection, the bond from sharing quality time with your family seems like a distant thing in
the past. The "bond" that the internet provides is superficial compared to the one a person can build
with people. Wallis best describes this when she says "If you're IMing four friends while watching
That '70s Show, it's not the same as sitting on the couch with your buddies or your sisters and
watching the show together" (Wallis 18). Turkle explains this by stating "We've become accustomed
to a new way of being 'alone together.' Technology–enabled, we are able to be with one another, and
also elsewhere, connected to wherever we want to be" (Turkle 4). Technology has given people a
false sense of being together when they are really not. Another common theme that the two essays
share is that technology and social media has made us less patient. Turkle attributes this due to the
lack of face–to–face conversations. She argues "Face–to–face conversation unfolds slowly. It
teaches patience. When we communicate on our digital devices, we learn different habits...we start
to expect faster responses"

These adolescents grow to be responsible and independent adults. They also teach their own
children to be independent out in the real world and the responsibilities they should know that help
them survive out in the real world as well. Maybe parents feed to the child's necessity of the reliance
of cellular phones. They are the ones who provide and pay for them as well. It may not be that
adolescents are stuck to technology on their own they do not just suddenly appear with a cellular
phone. It is given to them just because. Adolescents have grown to have an unhealthy dependence to
their cellular phones and technology itself. If they do not have their cellular phones by their side or
it gets lost or even turned off, the teenager feels as they have lost their lives, and the connection to
the world itself. Technology has become the life line of many people. There are advertisements all
over, on television with those catchy jingles or the commercials with hi–tech phones that can
practically do anything with a click and now touch of a button. People walk around streets and there
is someone walking with the latest phone. It makes a person want to get a phone maybe just as a
fashion trend because everyone has one, "why shouldn't I" people might think to themselves. It has
come to the point where adolescents have grown to lose human connection. Truckle

Analysis Of Sherry Turkle's Can You Hear Me Now?
Analysis of Sherry Turkle's "Can You Hear Me Now?" What will we be like if we continue to
develop intimate relationships with our devices? Will we be more connected than ever, or more
alienated? In "Can You Hear Me Now?", by Sherry Turkle, a professor of the social studies of
science and technology, argues that technology has made people more connected, but has also made
us more alienated from each other. How now, when in public people mostly want to be alone with
their personal networks, or devices. People used to talk to one other as they waited in line, or rode
on the bus or subway. Now we spend that downtime checking emails, responding to messages, or
scrolling through our social media feed. Turkle says, "People become alienated from their own
experience and anxious about watching a version of their lives scrolling along faster than they can
handle" (p. 508). Our devices are increasingly becoming a part of us, an extension of our mind.
Turkle does an amazing job at showing her case by stating evidence that is very relatable, along with
real life examples, and feelings that her audience has felt while dealing with their devices. While her
article remains clearly focused on how technology has connected us, but mostly on how it is making
us more alienated from each other, her argument suffers from some logical fallacies. For instance
she uses the appeal to sympathy in this part of her article by saying, "For those who are lonely yet
fearful of intimacy, online life provides environments where one can be a loner yet not alone, have
the illusion of companionship without the demands of sustained, intimate friendship"(507). Here she
is exploiting on our feelings, because most of us have felt lonely, and saying that now most people
go online to find that sense of company. Therefore, she's implying that we don't have to go out in
public to find someone to talk to, or even date now–a–days. There's this illusion of companionship
online, and it's even better because you don't deal with the demands you would in real life. Turkle
also uses card stacking frequently throughout her article, which is where one presents only the
evidence that supports the claim or argument. An example of this is how she talks regularly on

Is Technology Causing Us More Harm Than Good?
With innovations in technology being released each day, it's fair to compare the digital development
rate to the rate at which humans are being born. Each day we are a step closer to some undefined
goal regarding how advanced our commodities are; how many pixels a screen can be, or how fast a
processor is. Life and our daily tasks have become simpler, quicker, and more convenient with
devices that aid us in transportation, communication, and access to information such as cell phones,
computers, and televisions. However, these conveniences are causing laziness, loneliness, addiction,
and mental deterioration. Technology is at the tipping point towards detriment, as it is causing
mankind more harm than good.
The current use of technology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Source E shows how the progression of technology directly exemplifies laziness in an inverse
proportional manner: the screens get smaller and the users get bigger. The convenience factor of
technology and the laziness of citizens are increasing together, and are ultimately contributing to the
attrition of human interaction. As humans adapt to their lazy behaviors, they feel deprived when the
"easy way" isn't available. It has become human instinct to search for an easy way out. Source B
asserts the neglect of using Technology Accelerators–you only adopt technologies that directly
support what you're trying to achieve in a pause–think–crawl–walk–run manner. Source F says,
"Just because all of this marvelous technology exists does not mean that we have to use it all at the
same time." However, many people still go on "sprees" of downloading software and songs, or
buying devices and gadgets. People replace their appliances without even trying to fix what's
broken, and don't even know how to fix things anymore. The desire to always have the "newest" or
"best" products makes human satisfaction an illusion. People will never be content with what they
have because of their underlying instinct to always update and replace.
Most people can say that they come in contact with technology more than once a day. With this
sense of routine, we have adopted

Turkle Vs Woodman
As the use of technology surges, mankind's behavior evolves in a strange way. People have paid so
much attention to being up to date with social media, friends and the news that they have lost the
ability to communicate and have an actual conversation. Additionally, our compulsion to the Internet
has resulted in the tendency of people getting paranoid, not being able to self–reflect and be who
they actually are. The pressure of perfection we have inhibited from the Internet has cost us the
simplicity of life and what it has to offer. We walk on ground that has held us, fed us and grew us,
and yet some of us don't have a single ounce of gratitude. We talk to people and vent to them but
when it's our time to listen, we only pay attention to what matters to us. We have grown into a
selfish species that only thinks of themselves and what benefits them because the Internet has
thought us to be efficient instead of passionate.

How Robots Can Improve Our Lives
Technology has now grown and expanded to point where it is demonstrating humans and reacting to
our responses and needs. We are asking robots to basically become assistants, "Some people are
asking to do daily chores, while others either hope for a mechanical bride or a sociable robot". If
scientists are able to create and design a robot that can handle the tasks I aforementioned our daily
life would be altered. For instance, majority of us would have a housemaid, a friend and a mechanic.
The true question is: Are we only inserting these robots into our lives due to our negative
experiences or lack of experiences with others.
Robots can perform household chores in which would allow humans to have more freedom to
complete or tasks, or either have more assistance to complete that one tasks in particular. To have a
twenty–four hour aid would be amazing because it would make daily life operations more efficient
and less time consuming. One could only imagine the weight that will be lifted off of our shoulders
with a robot that can perform our tasks, and perform them well.
When it comes to the mechanical bride part, I am unsure of. I would not want a robot for a wife or
girlfriend for that matter. I believe that with a human: certain emotions, responses and actions are in
my opinion needed. I believe that with a robot, it will be to programmed to know how to respond to
one persons needs, because I am sure they will be programmed for a general population. Humans

The American Dream
America has always been considered a melting pot. Today, it is filled with people of many different
backgrounds and is more diverse than ever before. Mostly all of these people are in search of a
better life or strive to accomplish "The American Dream". Although, there is an underlying factor
that restricts these dreams from becoming a reality. In society, mainstream today requires people to
be and act like the "ideal American" to fully succeed in this world. There is a bias in society that if
someone does not fit the perfect description of an American they will not be the best at any job or
goal they want to achieve. The mainstream that is active in America today has created norms that
people must fulfill in order to have a fair chance at succeeding. In Sherry Turkle's passage "The
Flight From Conversation" she elaborates on how technology distracts us from living a full life and
working toward personal goals. This passage relates to In "Covering: Hidden Assault on Our Civil
Rights" by Kenji Yoshino because he explains how mainstream pressures people to be someone they
aren't, which also distracts them from their personal goals because they have a new role to fill. He
explains how the mainstream today as forced people to cover up stigmas to be presented as normal
and how assimilation has never been lost in American society, even when culture had shifted to

feel that the author is specifically addressing them. The inclusion tactic employed compels the
audience to relate and agree with the author. Professor Turkle also utilizes specific anecdotes from
her studies to make her argument more relatable. By providing examples of other people's
experiences to the connection versus conversation argument, a reader is then able to associate
themselves with that same experience. In doing so, that same reader then forms an emotional

How Technology Has Changed America And Its Views
Within the past few decades, technology has completely transformed. The height and talent of
today's technology has completely changed America and its views. Technology has completely
changed and expanded over the past 20 years. Within the past decade a new form of editing
technology was created, and that technology is Photoshop. Photoshop is a software used to alter
images. In todays day and age, photoshop has become the norm. It is everywhere and it cannot be
escaped. Photoshop is used on everything and everyone, and it is affecting us at an extremely
negative rate. Due to the works of Photoshop being used on every single media platform, society has
adapted to the perfection in photos that were altered by Photoshop. What the world sees when they
look at a photoshopped picture is what a company views as perfection, and this image creates an
unhealthy comparison between the viewer, the image, and those around them. With Photoshop,
images are altered beyond recognition. The Photoshop software takes away any blemish and flaw,
and it can make the model used in the photo unrealistically thin, and by this it creates an
unachievable body image. When these images are viewed by society, they only see the photo, and
they don't see the hours and hours spent altering the image to actually make them appear this way.
So, when society, especially young children and young adults, see these insanely altered images they

around it. It's been a bigger part of their lives than one can imagine. Christmas lists that, in previous
generations, had been filled out with the wishes of bicycles and board games have been replaced
with the wishes of iPhones and laptops for children ages as young as 9. The Empathy Diaries takes a
look at what effects this shift has caused in younger generations of Americans. Thanks to the

in this exact situation in the very lunchroom of Silver Creek High. Most lunches, my friends and I

your friends at the table, you're just sitting in the silence that is technology.
Chapter 2, The Flight From Conversation: In simple terms, The Flight From Conversation entails
the human fight or flight behavior. However, as conversation has begun slipping away from our
culture, we've failed to fight for it. There is a mentality in society that anything done with a
conversation can be done through technology. People have failed to realize the consequences that
result from avoiding conversation. We've nearly eliminated talking and have replaced it with texting
and emailing. We have no realization that texting prevents all feeling that should be involved in that
conversation had it been a real conversation. As Turkle states, " The students had tried to "warm up"
their digital messages by using emoticons, typing out the sounds of laughter, and using the forced
urgency of TYPING IN ALL CAPS." (pg. 23). I can personally vouch that this is a very real thing
that even I do on a daily basis if not more. People can't understand that these emotional short cuts
and feelings aren't the same things. On the other hand, they can almost understand the

Alone Together By Sherry Turgle
Alone together written by Sherry Turkle
Sherry Turkle is Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at MIT. When she joined
this faculty, she has no idea how far the technologies can lead to. Her book "Alone together "
describes our life on the Internet. As a psychologist, she was interested in the learning of the virtual
world and how it could affect us. Turkle clarifies positive and negative aspects of technological
absorption. In the early 90s a fluffy robot toy named Furby became very popular. These emotional
machines were exploiting human deepest emotions. Sherry Turkle brought eight Furby at an
elementary school to see how it could affect children. They considered these toys alive enough to
need care. Children interacted with a machine as with a pet or a human being (Turkle 38). This
behavior is provoked by the demands of Furby. As far as the toy has its own needs, children need to
react and feel not only for them but with them as well. Thus, these toys influenced children's
psychology. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are not enough people to take care of sickly old people, so robots are expected to solve this
situation. We transformed a role of technology into "love labor: taking care of each other (Turkle

just taking care? Robots are incapable to care with empathy as people do, they are not real enough to
cure a person from loneliness. In case we will get accustomed to emotion sharing with machines we
can reduce our expectations from relationships with human beings (Turkle

Fake Relationship
Human, who is impossible to be perfect, have some traits, qualities and identities that they dislike.
In most cases, while butcher their name, get nose surgery and erase symbol of original ethnicity,
people cover what they prefer not to have. As technology become more and more important in the
way of people communicate with each other, people can escape from cruel reality and be the
protagonists in this virtual and controllable world, whereas it also performs as the hurdle of
communication with the real world and decreases the importance of authenticity. In Sherry Turkle's
essay: "Alone Together", she worries about how people become unauthentic due to the heavily
dependence on the fake relationship created by social technology. ... Show more content on

Authenticity becomes less important because people in order to be the central of the lives, they try
hard to fit in, assimilate––– please the supremacy by covering their true reaction and identity. In the
essay, Yoshino talks about people cover, whether deliberately to do it or not. "I doubt any of these
people covered willingly. I suspect they were all bowing to an unjust reality that required them to
tone down their stigmatize identities to get along in life". (Yoshino 309) Human identity is important
for its authenticity of showing one's true part.
Lin 2 However, in order not disturb people, social with people, many individuals choose to hide or
betray what they really are. "Teenagers avoid making telephone calls, fearful that they "reveal too
much." They would rather text than talk. Adults, too, choose keyboards over the human voice. It is
more efficient, they say". (Turkle 272) People try to keep things short and sweet. Social technology
provides people way to achieve this expectation. While helps people create distances with others and
show perfect status, social technology acts as haven, making people feel safe. People edit and
reorganize their words, retouch their selfies to be perfect to avoid revealing their weaknesses and
defects. People are so afraid of revealing too much so they are more willing to lose the real part of

In Sherry Turkle's essay Alone Together, she argue that technology is taking over people's lives so
much that it isn't good for individuals. Turkle is a person who would like to have face–to–face
conversation, rather than talking over the phone or behind the computer screen. She prefers face–to–
face conversations. She isn't a big fan of texting. Turkle blame technology because it is getting rid of
the face–to–face conversations in the world. On the other hand, in Gregory Orr's text Return to
Hayneville, he talks about freedom and the guilt they have from old memories. Also, he talks about
how to involve himself into the civil rights movement to forget about the past and the guilt you have

the time people don't get the answers they need. There will always be one main question about
technology for the rest of time however. Is technology good for society? Technology has become the

Summary Of Sherry Turkle's Article No Need To Call
"No Need to Call" is an article written by Sherry Turkle. The article is from her book, Alone
Together, which was made in 2011. Turkle's article describes the impact of technology in everyone's
daily life and the dependency of modern communication and how it might bring people closer as
well as push them away. Turkle's writing shows people's perspective on how phone calls may have
unwanted strings attached and although text messaging and emails does make life easier, it will
never substitute for actual phone calls. On the other hand, the article "I Had a Nice Time with You

Namely, this revolution of communication leads to a face to face disconnection, which is becoming
more prevalent. In contrast, Wortham's essay speaks highly to the creation of online apps. and the
benefits it carries in terms of personal relationships, through a virtual environment. Despite, their
contrasting arguments, both the authors make a claim that there will never be a replacement for the
face to face interaction. Turkle herself writes, "Tara regretted that she had not called her friend
Alice–on the phone she would have heard her friend's grief–she expressed the point of view of
someone who grew up with the voice and is sorry to have lost touch with it" (p. 388). Turkle's point
is that there is no form of communication which can fully grasp all the emotions of someone,
besides talking over the phone or engaging in a speaking face to face conversation. Wortham agrees
when she writes, "Anyone who spends much time online and on smartphones knows that there is no
substitute for the real thing– its just an appetizer...the main course arrives" (p. 396). In other words,
Wortham's believes that society as a whole knows the distinction and assets between online and face
to face conversations. The emotional association is lacking when text messaging or emails are
involved because the tone and voice of the other person are easily misinterpreted. In

Positive And Negative Effects Of Modern Technology
Modern Technology has had a great deal of influence on how we process information in the twenty–
first Century. Business flourishes with the use of e–mails to send for conferences or important
information in seconds, while the use of Skype has vastly increased how they interact in conferences
from all over the world. News was once posted once a day only through the papers and television, if
the information was not seen then it was not known to have happen whereas today, anytime of the
day, current or former information can be accessed. Children today will be interacting with their
friends in seconds and do not have to make plans ahead of time. However, people have abused how
the Internet was intended to be which has led to some undeniable, severe consequences. Technology
has negatively impacted how humans communicate through replacing the human connection,
making peoples attention span shorter than it used to be, and providing a need for people to receive
shallow and instant gratification about how people view a topic. Technological devices, experts
assure us, are becoming insensitive, instant human substitutes for the conventional user. Sherry
Turkle, a Doctor of Social Studies and Technology at MIT, states, "We turn to machines for
companionship even as we seem pained or inconvenienced to...texting offers the right amount of
access, the right amount of control to distance people not too far or close" (Turkle 2011). People are

The Ted Talk By Sherry Turkle
The Ted Talk by Sherry Turkle, "Alone Together" embraces a strong dependency of modern day
technology, and it's power to replace human contact with the "Illusion of companionship". With a
respected background, a degree in Psychology and extensive research, Sherry Turkle emphasizes
just how much we're letting technology take us to a place we do not want to go. It is one thing to
reflect upon a professional, and another thing to adopt imagery in personal lyrical emotion. The two
videos that grasped my attention were Gary Turk's "Look up" and Prince EA's "Autocorrect
Humanity." Both videos display a lot of similarities, such as rhymes, an emotional connection, and
expressing the overall picture of putting down your phone, but Gary Turks "Look Up" has made a
larger impact of the two. The video "Look Up" has a significantly powerful, and emotional appeal to
it and the message it conveys. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

deficit. Gary Turk, on the other hand, sends his message stating "Be there for your friends, and

emotion, but same message being given. Although Prince EA uses statistics to appeal attention, Gary

A Text Message From My Life
One dark stormy night I got a text message from my boyfriend saying get dress we going out. When
he arrived at my house we went to dinner and then back at his house. As we was sitting on the sofa,
we was talking about how each other day went until his phone goes off and then he starts replying
back to text message. I kept talking to him and he wasn't paying me no mind so then I sent him a
text while he was sitting a couple inches from me to get his attention. It's likely you've done this,
too. Then he looked at me because he knew I was mad by my facial expression, so he put his phone
away in his pocket. When a person is spending alone time with their mate or just anyone in general
it's a place when one gets to enjoy ones company, not a place where one get to enjoy what's going on
ones side of the phone. This illustrates that there is little empathy towards people if they can't even
get a face to face conversation with each other for a couple hours without one person looking at their
phone. Nobody should have to send a text message to get ones attention or make them feel empathy
towards them.
Technology has become an important part of our daily lives and is gradually affecting the way we
feel for others. As the years go on, it becomes faster, smaller. Everywhere we go we see technology
or someone using it and many people would say it's a second you. Technology has made as lazy and

Since Turkle has been an MIT professor for 30 years, she has seen an increase of technology use and
a decrease in effort in the students. She sees how the students try less on their work and rely on the
technology to do it for them. This makes us feel like she is reliable since she has witnessed these
things happening. After witnessing the students wanting to use technology, she states that "they need
to be stimulated in ways that they did not need to be stimulated before" (Turkle 521). With the latest
technology, like PowerPoint, Turkle sees that students can get their point across in a quick and
fascinating way that intrigues everyone. By using these personal experiences, Turkle helps people
see that quick and easy is engaging to people, which must be why they enjoy technology so much. It
gives a better understanding, and connects them to the situation because most students have used
things like PowerPoint when they were in school and had to do a project. Even now, teachers use
PowerPoint to get their point across to their students, and by Turkle saying that humans like doing
things in a short and sweet way, it gives an understanding and people connect more to those
experiences. Professors put slideshows for students to read, which makes everything easier because
they do not have to read a book, they can just simply scroll through the slideshow and learn. Turkle
writes, "There is no harm in using the seductive and appealing to draw people in, to get them in their
seats, and to begin a conversation" (521). Adding this into her article, she convinces people that they
use these fancy things to get people's attention. By using her ethos as an MIT professor, it truly

Effects Of Technology And The Decline Of Solititude
Technology and the Decline of Solitude
Technology consuming our lives is making us so attached to it that a moment without it feels like we
are dying. We use technology to cure our issue of boredom with mindless activities like watching
videos or scrolling through social media. We never really are alone with our own thoughts; we
always have hundreds of people we can access at the touch of a button. When my computer died a
few years back, I had nothing else to access my favorite websites, so I simply borrowed my parents
until I bought a new one. Boredom, or solitude, felt so unusual for me; I had no clue what to do with
myself. I couldn't just sit there and be bored. Instead, I immediately filled that void with technology
once again when I could have just waited a few days for when I got my laptop. Even when I claim
that I am doing nothing, I still have headphones in or some video or show for background noise. I
strategically avoid the feeling of boredom all the time, and I immediately turn to my technology.
Professor Sherry Turkle states in her essay, "Solitude", that the decline of solitude has negative
effects on children's health, and technology is the cause. She discusses how time spent alone is
essential for developing certain qualities and skills as a child, such as empathy and creativity. Also,
she goes over how people are becoming addicted to technology, never leaving its side, and turning
to it for emotional outlets or getaways. She also mentions how parents are

Analysis Of Sherry Turkle 's Alone Together
Despite an increase in the amount of mediums used to communicate with other people, humans have
lost the ability to adequately socialize in an effective manner. In Sherry Turkle's Alone Together, the
reader is presented with animatronic devices as eventual replacements to human interaction.
Meanwhile, this is contrasted with Adam Gopnik's Bumping Into Mr Ravioli, where people are
always available for communication, but are always "perpetually suspending" any real face to face
contact (157). With this in mind, both authors seemingly mesh the principle that the advancement of
technology has had a disappointing impact on social skills. The growing amount of ways in which
humans communicate has created a complexity for choosing the correct method to build prosperous
relationships. Technology has alienated humans from face to face interactions by weakening the
ability to emphasize, commit, and form "real" friendships (Turkle 266). Technology has an uncanny
ability to either unite people from unimagined parts of the world or drive people away from each
other. Unfortunately, the latter has gradually occurred as more and more people drift from face to
face contact to methods of face to screen communication. As a result, the ability to sympathize with
others has been severely damaged because of the lost emotional exchanges that face to face contact
provides. For example, there is a stark contrast to hiking through the mountains and finally reaching
the valley versus taking an online

After its birth, glass becomes one kind of useful material in people's physical life. It has one unique
nature that, after some little modifications, it can be qualified to accomplish totally different tasks,
for example serving as windows and mirrors, to benefit the people who use it. Meanwhile, towards
people's mental experience, the communication is similar to glass in nature, and plays the same role.
In such a modern and pluralistic society, the accelerating pace of life and the increasing amount of
information bombardment people's brains; The high frequency of contacts with internet, which is an
infinite source of knowledge, also exhausts their time to think over themselves and then makes them
easily to become a pollyanna, which means the people who keep blind optimism without a certain
life direction. Whatever online or offline, the communication, which is the most important and
common way people have interactions between each other, plays an essential role that improve
people's identities and avoiding the astray of life. Sherry Turkle, the writer of "Reclaiming

people today turn to their phones instead of boredom.
According to Turkle, for a child to properly develop mentally, solitude is needed. As Turkle stated,
"It's the capacity for solitude that allows you to reach out to others and see them as separate and
independent. ... This makes the capacity for solitude essential to the development of empathy"
(Turkle 61). By being in solitude, people notice themselves and how they are one person and

Alone Together By Sherry Turkle
The effects and impacts of technology continue to be a widely debated topic within the
contemporary era. Sherry Turkle makes the provocative statement at the onset of her novel entitled,
"Alone Together", that suggests technology to be "seductive when it what if offers meets our human
vulnerabilities". (2011:1). Technology can be perceived to have primarily been designed for problem
solving purposes, such as serving as a medium to improve efficiency or increase the production
process, however, has since evolved into a platform that affects communication in various ways, for
example by either boosting or hindering the human self–esteem.
Furthermore, as suggested by Turkle, technology is not considered for the advancements offered and
made, but rather for the social factors contributed in society, such as the invention of 'emoticons' and
various additional platforms for communication, such as 'blogs'. Terms and phrases, such as "selfie"

However, prior to examining and analysing the changes brought upon by new media, the history and
evolution of journalism needs to be discussed. The need to share news and information as well as
the need to hold authority or a higher power accountable has afforded journalism the necessary
platform to exist and develop. While a few sources credit the origin of journalism, or the

Social Darwinism And Natural Selection

  • 1. Social Darwinism And Natural Selection It is almost undeniable that the technologies cause rapid changes in human relationships, cultures, and societies. While it enormously facilitates us in nearly every aspect of our life, such changes also create consequences that we do not yet realize. Almost all of us know Darwinism and Natural Selection in the biological field, but we often overlook the similar phenomena in the social aspect. In fact, resemble to the way we adapt to our physical environment, we also adapt to our social environment in order to survive and excel in our social relationships. Such adaption is called Social Darwinism. Because technologies have significantly influenced our social environment, humans are forced to adapt not only to technologies, but also to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason behind such decision is that unless in urgent situations, other people expect them to text, the technology that is more prevalent and requires less effort to respond than phone (Turkle 375). Although "Tara and Leonora are discontent, but do not feel they have a choice. This is where technology has brought them" (Turkle 375). From those examples, we can easily observe that because the notions of using certain technology have already became parts of our general social roles, people can no longer resist the influence of it regardless of our feeling. In the meantime, we are also forced to mentally adapt popularity and efficiency, the core values of modern technologies. In analogy, humans evolve (in the bigger and smaller scale) not only because of our side environment, but also the pressure under the notion that only the fittest among us can survive. In the comparison between phone calls and texts, texts are not any more technologically advanced than phone calls are. However, we in general still prefer texts, and intentionally or unintentionally make others around us use them because of the efficiency behind them. Moreover, when the popularity of texts is accumulated, such preference becomes further irreversible. Back to the context of expectations and social roles, we enjoy popularity as the outcome of pluralism, the conformity of social roles and expectation. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Sherry Turkle : How Computers Change The Way We Think Sherry Turkle's essay "How Computers Change the Way We Think" discuss how the growing popularity of technology is disconnecting us from our brain, loved ones and may be invading our private life. Electronics might not have been as helpful as we previously thought. Technology has made it easier for us to fix our mistakes but not learn from them. Turkle had met professors at MIT when students had transitioned from slide rules to calculators. The teachers had all exclaimed that students had become sloppy. "Professors insisted that required students maintain a mental sense of scale, whereas those who relied on calculators made frequent mistakes in orders of magnitude." We are too quick to have technology solve our everyday problems instead of resolving it ourselves to better understand our mistake in the first place. We no longer question or have interest in how technology can handle our tasks, but wonder what else it can accomplish on its own. "When people say that something is transparent, they mean that they can see how to make it work, not that they know how it works." Turkle states "For never has our world been more complex, hybridized and global." Since we become so dependent on items to make our daily lives stress free, could mean future generations will not know the mental exercise of resolving a conflict without computers. We have become accustomed to waking up and checking the bright screen first thing in the morning. Some individuals prefer this interface to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Negative Effects Of Technology On Society Technological advancements have made strides in cultural adaptation to successfully fabricate easements in life's elaborate, intricate processes in the twenty–first Century. Business prospers with the use of e–mails to send notes within seconds of writing the thought rather than people having to engage in an hour–long conference, while the use of Skype has vastly increased how we interact with people from all over the world. The News was once posted once a day through tabloids or television, whereas today, the information would be missed and not updated with up–to–the–minute posts. Present–day children will be interacting with their friends in–real time and do not have to take time out of their schedule to form plans ahead of time. Consequently, people have abused how the internet was intended to be which has led to some undeniable, severe consequences. Technology, therefore, has negatively impacted how society's simplistic, indispensable interactions through substitution of the human–connection experience, which affects people's attention span shorter than it used to be, and providing a need for people to receive shallow and instant gratification about how people view the world. Technological devices, experts assure us, are becoming insensitive, instant artificial substitutes for the conventional user. Technology, in short, has limited the compassion people once had to be doing something with someone, but rather it allows people to enter a reality where they can limit ... • 7. The Importance Of Technology On Communication Technology has been a central topic of today's society and is one of the most commonly used luxuries we have at this age. Yet the benefits and disadvantages have been through much debate over the years. "More technology or less?" one might ask themselves. However, when you look at the facts the answer is clearly less would benefit us all. When in a room with someone face to face interaction is key. One should not be felt separated by such blockades as phones. Technology makes us more alone due to not encouraging real friends, ruining the conversation, and because it takes away from the human aspect of life. Technology makes us more alone because of technology, specifically phones ruin conversation between families, friends, etc. When phones are used at places like a dinner table it's like an invisible–wall has been erected, blocking off all social interaction and conversation between these people. Sherry Turkle describes how "One 15–year–old I interviewed at a summer camp talked about her reaction when she went out to dinner with her father and he took out his phone to add "facts" to their conversation. "Daddy," she said, "stop Googling. I want to talk to you" (Turkle). When out with her Father this girl was trying to have a conversation with her father, and a phone ruined it. There's no way that phones possibly ruin conversation! Texting and other forms of communication found on phones clearly encourage conversation between two or more individuals. Plus, it's people's fault that they don't have long talks because they're most likely have a boring personality. As Sherry Turkle also reported "Maybe when we talk about conversations being "boring," such a frequent complaint, we are saying how uncomfortable we are with stillness. We may categorize it, as Middleton did, as "dull and pedestrian," but we now always have at hand a world of constant stimulation" (Turkle). Evidently, people should just become more interesting and talk about something that isn't boring if they want attention. This is obviously wrong as even if someone is boring phones shouldn't be used as an escape from constant stimulation. Plus this "boredom" is good for us as human beings and boredom was an intended thing for us to experience. Sherry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Technology And Technology Essay Have you ever had the absolute need to be in constant contact with someone? Some people in society always have the need to be connected to someone and others really don't have too. Though some people in society fall somewhere in between these two categories of people. These people don't have that constant need to be connected to someone or something, yet they do like to be able to contact someone in just a few seconds if they need too. People that fall in between are ones that rather talk face to face, but like the fact they have the ability to contact those that are far away, or not close enough and be able to communicate in person. I have begun to notice that at my school a lot of people would rather be on their phones than be in contact with the people around them, but in some cases there are a few that are not "tethered" to their phones. Professor, at MIT, and author Sherry Turkle discusses the issues of this generation constantly on their phones, computers, and updating their social media pages in the chapter "Growing Up Tethered" from her book Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other. Turkle accurately describes two different types of people in society who are connected to technology: the first, those who are constantly using their devices to keep up with everything going on the different social media sites, and the second, those who only use their devices when necessary. They don't keep up with their social media constantly and will only talk to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Analysis Of Texting That Saves Lives After watching both "Texting That Saves Lives" by Nancy Lublin and "Connected, but Alone?" by Sherry Turkle, I find myself in agreement with Ms. Lublin much more than with Ms. Turkle. Technology is working relative miracles every day in saving lives. However, I believe that technology may be better described as enhancing instead of hindering "healthy emotional growth". Technology has made it possible to have more meaningful relationships with those that would otherwise be geographically prohibitive. Also, Ms. Turkle talks about utilizing e–mail and texting during empty time, which is time that is otherwise unoccupied (Turkle, 2012). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "on the days they worked, 36 percent of employed people age 25 and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Technology And Conversation : Technology Shabnam Ojani Professor Ryan Fletcher 09/21/2015 Essay 1 Technology and conversation It is amazing how everyone's life is changing by through us of technology. "Technology by definition means, the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science"(Technology). Today people use different kinds of technology like: cellphones, iPods, laptops, mp3s, and all of the devices create a convenient and comfort for every individual. As technology is updating every day, and every second it is affecting people's lives and changing the pace of everything that relates to humans' routines. One of the most important things that technology changes is the way everyone communicates. Technologies create more powerful and effective ways of communication. People are getting used to a new way to be alone together. Conversation in number and quality decrease as technology replaces in human interaction. In this article author gives insight into how technology distracts people without considering what price they are paying and persuades how technology has a huge effect on people's conversation. Sherry Turkle, a psychologist and professor of the social studies and technology at the Massachusetts institute, wrote the article "The Flight from Conversation". • 15. The Benefits Of New Media And Technology What is the self in the digital age? One might say that their true online self is on Facebook, or MySpace, or maybe Instagram. The splintering of the self into multiple versions illustrates a desire to see what one can be online. Truly, new media and technology has allowed one to find their true inner self, whether that reflect their real self in real life or not. Yet, not everyone sees these disparate selves with optimism. Sherry Turkle and Natasha Schüll see the growth of new media and technology as detrimental to the formation of our true selves and both critically analyze specific cases where it can be harmful. I, however, disagree with the sentiment that new media and technology is something inherently harmful. Although they can certainly be misused, the benefits of these digital innovations can, when applied with critical understanding, outweigh the negatives brought up by Turkle and Schüll. First, Turkle argues that social media is preventing adolescents from dedicating time to self–reflection and replacing face to face communication with online communication. Turkle states in her book, Alone Together, that teens "need time to discover themselves, time to think. But technology, put in the service of always–on communication and telegraphic speed and brevity, has changed the rules of engagement with all of this." Here, Turkle state that since social media is easily accessible and immediate, teenagers will be compelled to interact online, instead of taking the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rhetorical Analysis Of The Flight From Conversation Lyana Beato Professor Deal English 1101 18 November 2016 "The Flight from Conversation" by Sherry Turkle: A Rhetorical Analysis In "The Flight from Conversation," published in The New York Times on April 21, 2012, and written by sociology and personality psychologist, Sherry Turkle, she discusses her concerns on how the world has chosen technological connection over conversation and physical interaction. Turkle informs her readers that "Over the past 15 years, I've studied technologies of mobile connection I've learned that the little devices most of us carry around are so powerful that they change not only what we do, but also who we are" (Sherry Turkle). She also appeals to ethos by establishing her credibility. However, the author's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first being that she includes a very slim amount of logos. The article lacks credible sources and information from research other than her own, there are no statistics being used, or any use of quotes from other authors/researchers. Kelly Professor Michele Lee 12 February 2017 Argumentative essay against "No Need to Call" by Sherry Turkle Imagine interacting with a close friend or loved one who lives thousands of miles away. Most people in today's society use technology to stay in contact with the people they love. Author of "No Need to Call" (2011), Sherry Turkle strongly feels the use of texting or emailing is replacing how people interact with each other while on the other hand Jenna Wortham, author of "I Had a Nice Time with You Tonight. On the App." (2014) opposes Turkle's view. Wortham believes that messaging actually makes the relationship between two individuals better. To begin with, Turkle thinks that the use of ... • 21. Sherry Turkle How people interact with each other can us tell a lot about society. It can tell us about their interests and goals in life. In Sherry Turkle, Selections from "Selections from Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other", Turkle explores Artificial intelligence and how humans interact with it. Turkles explores how people (specifically children) are able to develop love for AI's how their relationship develops. Talking more specifically about love, Barbara Fredrickson, in Selections from "Love 2.0: How Our Supreme Emotion Affects Everything We Feel, Think, Do, and Become" shares her research about her discovery of "love 2.0" and how the old idea of love is outdated and misunderstood. People can experience the little moments of "positivity resonance" through artificial intelligence much easier, faster and at their leisure. With enough difficulties in the world, people try to avoid getting into relationships that will give them negative experiences. Some people have experiences which present them with too much friction with one another. Technology provided us with ways we can experience interactions that present less friction, interactions like the ones with Artificial intelligence. As Turkle says in her essay "At the robotic moment, more than ever, our willingness to engage with the inanimate does not depend on being deceived but wanting to fill in the blanks" (459). With the new technology advancing, more and more people are willing to give it a try to fulfill their desire of connecting with others. The time it takes for us to travel to another destination continues to shorten. Computers continue to advance at a rapid pace. Communicating with family and friends from another country has become easier than ever. It would seem as if everything is perfect. However, that is not the case at all. The irony of it all is that inventions that were supposed to make us connected to people close to us have actually had the opposite effect. In addition to the obsession over cyber– space connection, the bond from sharing quality time with your family seems like a distant thing in the past. The "bond" that the internet provides is superficial compared to the one a person can build with people. Wallis best describes this when she says "If you're IMing four friends while watching That '70s Show, it's not the same as sitting on the couch with your buddies or your sisters and watching the show together" (Wallis 18). Turkle explains this by stating "We've become accustomed to a new way of being 'alone together.' Technology–enabled, we are able to be with one another, and also elsewhere, connected to wherever we want to be" (Turkle 4). Technology has given people a false sense of being together when they are really not. Another common theme that the two essays share is that technology and social media has made us less patient. Turkle attributes this due to the lack of face–to–face conversations. She argues "Face–to–face conversation unfolds slowly. It teaches patience. When we communicate on our digital devices, we learn different habits...we start to expect faster responses" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sherry Turkles Michelle Cervantes Cecile Harding English 5A (TTH 8AM) 7 September 2010 Technology and the young When children hit their adolescent years, most of them are given cellular phones by their parents. Parents may think that by providing their young adolescent with a cellular phone it is a form of keeping touch with them at all times. Even though I do not believe this is very responsible of the parents to do because adolescents do not get to build up a sense of self awareness in the dangerous world around them; they seem to lack their sense of direction since the android cellular phones now in days give you the answers to practically everything. It may not be that adolescents are stuck to technology on their own they do not just suddenly appear with a cellular phone. It is given to them just because. Adolescents have grown to have an unhealthy dependence to their cellular phones and technology itself. If they do not have their cellular phones by their side or it gets lost or even turned off, the teenager feels as they have lost their lives, and the connection to the world itself. Technology has become the life line of many people. There are advertisements all over, on television with those catchy jingles or the commercials with hi–tech phones that can practically do anything with a click and now touch of a button. People walk around streets and there is someone walking with the latest phone. Will we be more connected than ever, or more alienated? In "Can You Hear Me Now?", by Sherry Turkle, a professor of the social studies of science and technology, argues that technology has made people more connected, but has also made us more alienated from each other. How now, when in public people mostly want to be alone with their personal networks, or devices. People used to talk to one other as they waited in line, or rode on the bus or subway. Now we spend that downtime checking emails, responding to messages, or scrolling through our social media feed. Turkle says, "People become alienated from their own experience and anxious about watching a version of their lives scrolling along faster than they can handle" (p. 508). Our devices are increasingly becoming a part of us, an extension of our mind. Turkle does an amazing job at showing her case by stating evidence that is very relatable, along with real life examples, and feelings that her audience has felt while dealing with their devices. While her article remains clearly focused on how technology has connected us, but mostly on how it is making us more alienated from each other, her argument suffers from some logical fallacies. For instance she uses the appeal to sympathy in this part of her article by saying, "For those who are lonely yet fearful of intimacy, online life provides environments where one can be a loner yet not alone, have the illusion of companionship without the demands of sustained, intimate friendship"(507). Here she is exploiting on our feelings, because most of us have felt lonely, and saying that now most people go online to find that sense of company. Therefore, she's implying that we don't have to go out in public to find someone to talk to, or even date now–a–days. There's this illusion of companionship online, and it's even better because you don't deal with the demands you would in real life. Turkle also uses card stacking frequently throughout her article, which is where one presents only the evidence that supports the claim or argument. • 29. Is Technology Causing Us More Harm Than Good? With innovations in technology being released each day, it's fair to compare the digital development rate to the rate at which humans are being born. Each day we are a step closer to some undefined goal regarding how advanced our commodities are; how many pixels a screen can be, or how fast a processor is. Life and our daily tasks have become simpler, quicker, and more convenient with devices that aid us in transportation, communication, and access to information such as cell phones, computers, and televisions. However, these conveniences are causing laziness, loneliness, addiction, and mental deterioration. Technology is at the tipping point towards detriment, as it is causing mankind more harm than good. The current use of technology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Source E shows how the progression of technology directly exemplifies laziness in an inverse proportional manner: the screens get smaller and the users get bigger. The convenience factor of technology and the laziness of citizens are increasing together, and are ultimately contributing to the attrition of human interaction. As humans adapt to their lazy behaviors, they feel deprived when the "easy way" isn't available. It has become human instinct to search for an easy way out. Source B asserts the neglect of using Technology Accelerators–you only adopt technologies that directly support what you're trying to achieve in a pause–think–crawl–walk–run manner. Source F says, "Just because all of this marvelous technology exists does not mean that we have to use it all at the same time." However, many people still go on "sprees" of downloading software and songs, or buying devices and gadgets. People replace their appliances without even trying to fix what's broken, and don't even know how to fix things anymore. The desire to always have the "newest" or "best" products makes human satisfaction an illusion. People will never be content with what they have because of their underlying instinct to always update and replace. Most people can say that they come in contact with technology more than once a day. The pressure of perfection we have inhibited from the Internet has cost us the simplicity of life and what it has to offer. We are asking robots to basically become assistants, "Some people are asking to do daily chores, while others either hope for a mechanical bride or a sociable robot". If scientists are able to create and design a robot that can handle the tasks I aforementioned our daily life would be altered. For instance, majority of us would have a housemaid, a friend and a mechanic. The true question is: Are we only inserting these robots into our lives due to our negative experiences or lack of experiences with others. Robots can perform household chores in which would allow humans to have more freedom to complete or tasks, or either have more assistance to complete that one tasks in particular. To have a twenty–four hour aid would be amazing because it would make daily life operations more efficient and less time consuming. One could only imagine the weight that will be lifted off of our shoulders with a robot that can perform our tasks, and perform them well. When it comes to the mechanical bride part, I am unsure of. I would not want a robot for a wife or girlfriend for that matter. I believe that with a human: certain emotions, responses and actions are in my opinion needed. Mostly all of these people are in search of a better life or strive to accomplish "The American Dream". Although, there is an underlying factor that restricts these dreams from becoming a reality. In society, mainstream today requires people to be and act like the "ideal American" to fully succeed in this world. There is a bias in society that if someone does not fit the perfect description of an American they will not be the best at any job or goal they want to achieve. The mainstream that is active in America today has created norms that people must fulfill in order to have a fair chance at succeeding. In Sherry Turkle's passage "The Flight From Conversation" she elaborates on how technology distracts us from living a full life and working toward personal goals. The height and talent of today's technology has completely changed America and its views. Technology has completely changed and expanded over the past 20 years. Within the past decade a new form of editing technology was created, and that technology is Photoshop. Photoshop is a software used to alter images. In todays day and age, photoshop has become the norm. It is everywhere and it cannot be escaped. Photoshop is used on everything and everyone, and it is affecting us at an extremely negative rate. Due to the works of Photoshop being used on every single media platform, society has adapted to the perfection in photos that were altered by Photoshop. What the world sees when they look at a photoshopped picture is what a company views as perfection, and this image creates an unhealthy comparison between the viewer, the image, and those around them. With Photoshop, images are altered beyond recognition. The Photoshop software takes away any blemish and flaw, and it can make the model used in the photo unrealistically thin, and by this it creates an unachievable body image. When these images are viewed by society, they only see the photo, and they don't see the hours and hours spent altering the image to actually make them appear this way. You're sitting with your friends at the table, you're just sitting in the silence that is technology. Chapter 2, The Flight From Conversation: In simple terms, The Flight From Conversation entails the human fight or flight behavior. However, as conversation has begun slipping away from our culture, we've failed to fight for it. There is a mentality in society that anything done with a conversation can be done through technology. People have failed to realize the consequences that result from avoiding conversation. We've nearly eliminated talking and have replaced it with texting and emailing. We have no realization that texting prevents all feeling that should be involved in that conversation had it been a real conversation. As Turkle states, " The students had tried to "warm up" their digital messages by using emoticons, typing out the sounds of laughter, and using the forced urgency of TYPING IN ALL CAPS." (pg. 23). Business flourishes with the use of e–mails to send for conferences or important information in seconds, while the use of Skype has vastly increased how they interact in conferences from all over the world. News was once posted once a day only through the papers and television, if the information was not seen then it was not known to have happen whereas today, anytime of the day, current or former information can be accessed. Technology has negatively impacted how humans communicate through replacing the human connection, making peoples attention span shorter than it used to be, and providing a need for people to receive shallow and instant gratification about how people view a topic. When he arrived at my house we went to dinner and then back at his house. Then he looked at me because he knew I was mad by my facial expression, so he put his phone away in his pocket. When a person is spending alone time with their mate or just anyone in general it's a place when one gets to enjoy ones company, not a place where one get to enjoy what's going on ones side of the phone. A lady, Rattan, found it to be very beneficial, "She segmented her workday into times online and off. This helped her to unitask because she had long blocks of time when email and the web were no longer a temptation" (Turkle 261). If someone is online, using social media for all the world to see, it is also important to conserve a positive image. I have found that this is best accomplished by minimal use, or only posting when there was enough time to think it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Rhetorical Analysis Of The Flight From Conversation By... Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sherry Turkle, in the essay, The Flight From Conversation, originally published in the New York Times, addresses the topic of technology's effect on society. In the essay, she argues that its usage is making it difficult for humans to interact with one another. Turkle supports her claim by utilizing the audience's familiarity of the topic, rhetorical questions, and many references to anecdotes and events. The author's overall purpose is to warn her audience of the negative impacts this topic can have on humans and to suggest her ways of preventing a lifestyle which revolves around technology. Sherry Turkle successfully employs a critical tone to appeal to her audience's values and emphasize the significance of the ideas presented. By writing the article on a subject that the majority of people are very familiar with, Sherry Turkle automatically makes a connection with her audience. The use of technology and ... From a sophmore in high school to a woman in an elder–care facility, she provides the perspectives of a range of individuals to show the effect technology and cell phone usage has had on the interactions between human beings. The example of the elderly woman discussing the loss of her child to a robot, which Turkle describes as "haunting", demonstrates the eagerness of humans to talk to and open up to a robot, rather than a human. "The robot seemed to be looking into her eyes. It seemed to be following the conversation," she writes, "The woman was comforted." By structuring her evidence like this, the author is able to bring to light the seriousness of the issue and successfully elaborate her reasoning for her argument. She is able to discuss how her family reduces their technology usage and how others should be encouraged to do the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Constant Connectivity By Sherry Turkle: Article Analysis In "Digital Demands: The Challenges of Constant Connectivity" by Sherry Turkle, who is a professor, she talks in an interview about how people spend more time on their phones, doing everything as easy as possible, rather than doing it in person. People would rather sit on their technology instead of enjoying life outside of social media and technology. Using technology makes everything easier instead of doing hard work to get something done. Sherry Turkle's article is effective because she uses her ethos as an MIT professor and strong evidence through examples that show what is lost by an over reliance on technology and multitasking. In this article, Turkle talks about how technology is becoming a way of life, even though it seems a little ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since Turkle has been an MIT professor for 30 years, she has seen an increase of technology use and a decrease in effort in the students. She sees how the students try less on their work and rely on the technology to do it for them. This makes us feel like she is reliable since she has witnessed these things happening. After witnessing the students wanting to use technology, she states that "they need to be stimulated in ways that they did not need to be stimulated before" (Turkle 521). With the latest technology, like PowerPoint, Turkle sees that students can get their point across in a quick and fascinating way that intrigues everyone. By using these personal experiences, Turkle helps people see that quick and easy is engaging to people, which must be why they enjoy technology so much. It gives a better understanding, and connects them to the situation because most students have used things like PowerPoint when they were in school and had to do a project. Even now, teachers use PowerPoint to get their point across to their students, and by Turkle saying that humans like doing things in a short and sweet way, it gives an understanding and people connect more to those experiences. Professors put slideshows for students to read, which makes everything easier because they do not have to read a book, they can just simply scroll through the slideshow and learn. Turkle writes, "There is no harm in using the seductive and appealing to draw people in, to get them in their seats, and to begin a conversation" (521). Adding this into her article, she convinces people that they use these fancy things to get people's attention. By using her ethos as an MIT professor, it truly showed how she has witnessed a change in the students over time as technology became more and more popular, convincing people that technology does have an ... • 67. Effects Of Technology And The Decline Of Solititude Technology and the Decline of Solitude Technology consuming our lives is making us so attached to it that a moment without it feels like we are dying. We use technology to cure our issue of boredom with mindless activities like watching videos or scrolling through social media. We never really are alone with our own thoughts; we always have hundreds of people we can access at the touch of a button. When my computer died a few years back, I had nothing else to access my favorite websites, so I simply borrowed my parents until I bought a new one. Boredom, or solitude, felt so unusual for me; I had no clue what to do with myself. I couldn't just sit there and be bored. Instead, I immediately filled that void with technology once again when I could have just waited a few days for when I got my laptop. Even when I claim that I am doing nothing, I still have headphones in or some video or show for background noise. I strategically avoid the feeling of boredom all the time, and I immediately turn to my technology. Professor Sherry Turkle states in her essay, "Solitude", that the decline of solitude has negative effects on children's health, and technology is the cause. She discusses how time spent alone is essential for developing certain qualities and skills as a child, such as empathy and creativity. Also, she goes over how people are becoming addicted to technology, never leaving its side, and turning to it for emotional outlets or getaways. She also mentions how parents are ... • 69. Analysis Of Sherry Turkle 's Alone Together Despite an increase in the amount of mediums used to communicate with other people, humans have lost the ability to adequately socialize in an effective manner. In Sherry Turkle's Alone Together, the reader is presented with animatronic devices as eventual replacements to human interaction. Meanwhile, this is contrasted with Adam Gopnik's Bumping Into Mr Ravioli, where people are always available for communication, but are always "perpetually suspending" any real face to face contact (157). With this in mind, both authors seemingly mesh the principle that the advancement of technology has had a disappointing impact on social skills. The growing amount of ways in which humans communicate has created a complexity for choosing the correct method to build prosperous relationships. Technology has alienated humans from face to face interactions by weakening the ability to emphasize, commit, and form "real" friendships (Turkle 266). Technology has an uncanny ability to either unite people from unimagined parts of the world or drive people away from each other. Unfortunately, the latter has gradually occurred as more and more people drift from face to face contact to methods of face to screen communication. As a result, the ability to sympathize with others has been severely damaged because of the lost emotional exchanges that face to face contact provides. For example, there is a stark contrast to hiking through the mountains and finally reaching the valley versus taking an online ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. The Importance Of Communication In Speaking In Tongues By... After its birth, glass becomes one kind of useful material in people's physical life. It has one unique nature that, after some little modifications, it can be qualified to accomplish totally different tasks, for example serving as windows and mirrors, to benefit the people who use it. Meanwhile, towards people's mental experience, the communication is similar to glass in nature, and plays the same role. In such a modern and pluralistic society, the accelerating pace of life and the increasing amount of information bombardment people's brains; The high frequency of contacts with internet, which is an infinite source of knowledge, also exhausts their time to think over themselves and then makes them easily to become a pollyanna, which means the people who keep blind optimism without a certain life direction. Sherry Turkle, the writer of "Reclaiming Conversation" , expresses her ideas in "the Empathy Diaries" that the conversation, especially the face–to–face conversation, is essential for children's development of the skill of social communication. She also mentions how parents are pushing this life style onto their children. Turkle correctly concludes that solitude is an important part of childhood, and people today turn to their phones instead of boredom. According to Turkle, for a child to properly develop mentally, solitude is needed. As Turkle stated, "It's the capacity for solitude that allows you to reach out to others and see them as separate and independent. ... This makes the capacity for solitude essential to the development of empathy" (Turkle 61). By being in solitude, people notice themselves and how they are one person and capable of doing things on their own. With that realization, a person would then be able to look at others and come to the same conclusion that they too are independent from others, that they are not just part of a ... In this present time, a student would be asked to find the same definition, they would simply pull out their phone, and ask Siri. The recent and modern generations don't know how to navigate and find a word in a dictionary. • 77. Alone Together By Sherry Turkle The effects and impacts of technology continue to be a widely debated topic within the contemporary era. Sherry Turkle makes the provocative statement at the onset of her novel entitled, "Alone Together", that suggests technology to be "seductive when it what if offers meets our human vulnerabilities". (2011:1). Technology can be perceived to have primarily been designed for problem solving purposes, such as serving as a medium to improve efficiency or increase the production process, however, has since evolved into a platform that affects communication in various ways, for example by either boosting or hindering the human self–esteem. Furthermore, as suggested by Turkle, technology is not considered for the advancements offered and made, but rather for the social factors contributed in society, such as the invention of 'emoticons' and various additional platforms for communication, such as 'blogs'. Maria Popova, writer for Wired UK, brought attention to the transition in journalism as a result of technological advances by posing the following question to critically acclaimed reporters and academics in an article entitled, "The Big Question: New media's effect on Journalism", "In the next decade, what new media platform will most affect journalism and self–expression?" (2010). However, prior to examining and analysing the changes brought upon by new media, the history and evolution of journalism needs to be discussed. The need to share news and information as well as the need to hold authority or a higher power accountable has afforded journalism the necessary platform to exist and develop. While a few sources credit the origin of journalism, or the transmission of news, to the 'word of mouth' method, most document the origin of journalism to lie in China's primary public information ...
