1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and
of real media products?
By Tori Vincent
2. Marketing Aims
๏ Firstly before we opted to produce our music video as a pair we chose to carry out a lot of research
into different music video which would be the same genre but also a range of genres.
๏ By watching other videos it means that when creating our own we can add similar factors which
allows the audience to recognise our product. Another factor would be that it would identify aspects
of my artist ad the music they opt to follow and also challenge these conventions.
๏ It was significant that we considered our target audience as we wished for them to be interesting in
the product so before we made any decisions we had to consider or discuss with our audience.
Another factor would be that we reflected the conventions of the real media product amongst the
house genre. Some may suggest that our music video also challenged them which then game our
products and artist a unique selling point.
3. ๏ When carrying out my research I found that most soft house use women throughout there
video which are often exposed this suggest how women are used an object within this music
which is linked to festivals and partying. Another factor about house music videos is that they
tend to be quite random and have multiple stories within the video. For example the video
from naughty boy โ La La La, there is a deep story within the video however it also had random
factors such as the dancing puppet traffic man. House music videos are not like other genres
such as rap where they express dominance through low camera angles which shows how the
character is superior. House music video do so by lighting and space. For example e
the picture below to the right shows when we wished to sho-
w that she felt alone and sad as the lighting is quite dark and
the scene is simple.
4. ๏ To make the artists more enticing and interesting it meant that we opted to not comply with the
conventions which therefore meant when we opted to promote Olivia people would be surprised.
For example we opted to use a person who has not similarities when considering looks and also
personality which therefore causes the target audience to look more into the artist profile.
๏ For our video to be similar to other house videos it was significant that our narrative had a meaning
to it thatโs why we opted to add the emotion which comes through at the end of the video. It does
not need to be a gripping narrative just a story which links to the song itself.
๏ The location of the video is within a forest as we did not wish to have an materialistic link to the
video and song. The song itself has a lot of power when considering the lyrics due to it expressing
the link of love and what young adults fall in and out off. It is a very current issue with the younger
generation wishing to be someone or something they are not.
5. ๏ The music video develops conventions in many ways when considering a house music video due to it
being a narrative video rather than it being a performance video which is typically shown in rap and
hip hop videos.
๏ When considering costumes of the people within the video which would be a factor of mise en scene
it was not a key factor. Which I found when carry out my research as it is quite relaxed and
comfortable attire. However I made Izzy wear big heavy and
dark clothing which showed a shy personality which would be quite down.
Whereas we opted to dress Amy in a bright pink jacket which indicates that
she's a happy, bold personality.
๏ We also chose to use natural lighting as we wished to make the video as genuine as possible as it was
not a stages video in front of a green screen.
๏ The characters emotions and personality within the video was very significant due to the fact that
facial expressions and body language was a way she was able to interpret the mood, atmosphere and
narrative of the song itself which then links to the music video.
6. Location
๏ The location within the music video is a key factor and typically house music
videos are not typically in the chosen location. It was significant that we opted for
a location which wasnโt generic or a common place. I would hope that this would
therefore mean that it would entice the target audience even more. Factors
within the video which are key and a large factor of the younger generation
would be music, so when they were having fun in the car. Meeting up with each
other which links to the importance of social groups. Lastly another factor would
be when James throws the log into the frozen pond which indicate the sense of
mischief. When filming we also chose for him to wear his hood which could
indicate that mischievous behaviour is carried out by certain social groups.
7. ๏ To develop conventions we opted to use a number of swing shots which
opted to show the bigger picture which could therefore reflect on the
artist. Showing that the artist care more for detail and this therefore allows
the audience to understand and engage with the artist.
๏ We also opted to capture the footage from a number of different
distances, angles and focuses which in any music video ,makes the video
more appeal as it keeps the audience interested and allows them to
understand the story.
8. DigiPaks
๏ We opted to have a basic Digipak which therefore gives a very limited amount of
information away about the artist which would therefore hopefully entice people to buy the
CD. When comparing covers the Riri cover is quite busy and hectic and she exposes her
body which could indicate what sort of artist she is.
