Q1 media evaluation
1.
2. We adopted a style of editing that is commonly used for the genre of
Indie/rock. It has a mix of fast and slow paced cuts between shots depending
on the beat or flow of the song as it can vary.We used this style of editing to
help the video belong to the song as we felt the video has to help the audience
to understand the story and message of the song. I feel that we did this well
but could have done it better, through better narrative. Selena Gomez's video
for the song ‘Come and get it’ inspired this idea, we used this video a lot when
it came to editing and the looks of the video. We all felt that ‘Come and get it’
was what we wanted our video to be like and give that same feeling of nature
and being out of control.
3. The Indie/Rock genre is commonly recognised for having both narrative
and performance and so we decided to do both in our video and we
thought it would make a better suited and better music video. The genre
likes to tell the story of the song through the narrative of the video as
well as through the lyrics unlike in the rap genre where they like to only
tell the story through the lyrics. Again we decided to conform to this
stereotype of both narrative and performance. Some common aspects of
Indie/Rock music videos is to have the main character alone and isolated
in a natural setting where they might be contemplating their situation
and life itself, we used this throughout our video as it helped to convey
the idea that our character is lost and confused because of the abuse of
drugs and alcohol. We tried to tell the story of the song through the
narrative as much as we could.
4. Areas where we slightly challenged forms and conventions of
real media products were the idea of matching the lyrics to the
video. The majority of time, what happens in the video has no
correlation with the lyrics whereas in real products it is the case
that many lyrics dictate what will happen in the video. We felt
that music videos like Rebecca Black's 'Friday', where
everything that she says in the lyrics is displayed in the video
looks really basic so we decided not to replicate the lyrics in the
video for the most part.
5. I feel as though we used more locations than a usual music video would. For some videos, the
fact that there were lots of locations and the lyrics didn't really match the video, it might seem
a bit jumbled, however we wanted the video to make it clear that our character was meant to
be confused and lost and always wanting to be alone. We wanted this because we thought this
is what the song is telling the audience and how the effect of drugs and alcohol can make you
like this. We didn’t want to directly match the lyrics with exact visuals as I said in the last slide, it
feels a bit basic, we wanted to subtly hint at the story through the narrative. This is why it lead
to not as much performance as the narrative of the song is plentiful and we felt that paying
more attention to that would make the overall video better suited to the song. For one part of
the performance aspect of the video we went to central London and found a wall with graffiti
all over it and we thought that it would work well with the whole idea of the character being
confused. The graffiti itself was a city that was full of different colours and building laid out
without any order.
6. We used a lot of medium and long shots as it was common across the indie/rock genre. We
liked the idea of showing the setting as much as possible in each shot but also getting in the
emotion of the character. The setting was vital in helping the audience understand the
lyrics and the story as it helped to convey the isolation of the character.
7. Our group took aspects of websites we had seen in our
research and planning and added them to our own. For
example, I looked at Adele’s and Ellie Goulding’s website
and we found that tour dates, songs, lyrics, videos and
galleries were included. We decided to replicate this which
was quite simple on Wix.
For our poster wed decided to go with the dark theme, as
we want our singer/artist to become associated with certain
things and dark themes is one of them. We also placed the
record label and name of the artist on the poster as we
concluded that having the essential information for an
opening single and album cover would be useful so the
audience knows what and who it is. Not all artists have the
information on their poster but that can be because they
might be a well established artist and ours wasn’t. We also
included a positive review so people might become more
interested.
