Contemporary environmentalism and wilderness culture are often fraught with controversy, saddled with remnants of obsolete ideas which continue to
hinder their effectiveness and reception. Firstly, the dominant environmental paradigm is fashioned in part from a mechanistic worldview, a relic of
Enlightenment thinking that espouses scientific objectivity. It relies on an underlying dichotomy of wilderness and civilization, and implies superior
significance of humans over Nature. Furthermore, it preserves the racist tone of early conservationism.
Much of contemporary environmentalism stems from a mechanistic worldview. Characterized by scientific objectivity, it regards the claims, methods
and results of science as undisputable, thus giving rise to the notion of scientific knowledge as power. This is best typified by the mind–body dualism
of Descartes which distinguishes the scientific, rational mind as on a higher realm than the natural body. Similarly, Haraway defines Absolute
Objectivity as "an external, disembodied point of view" that provides an absolute – and hence, irrefutable – perspective on a given issue. It regards the
scientific gaze as an omniscient observer, while "the object of inquiry is passive and stable". This has staggering consequences for environmentalism.

Environmentalism is not a new concept. It is a social movement that aims to protect and improve the health of the environment. While humans have
accepted this view of environmentalism for the Holocene epoch, political environmentalist Paul Wapner proposes a renewed definition of
environmentalism that has emerged in the Anthropocene epoch. Wapner sees the Anthropocene as an epoch of human geological influence, where
humans have inflicted a signature on the earth, leaving it "independent of human experience" (37). That is to say, humans have embedded themselves
into the earth systems, resulting in a new form of nature that is not autonomous, but rather defined by a hybrid human–nature relationship. This
concept of a human–nature hybridity is the foundation for Wapner's argument of an environmentalism that embraces the post–nature age and calls for a
"more sustainable, just and ecologically healthy" (50) future.
Although Wapner emphasises an environmentalism that requires human action in the form of sustainable development, his argument falls short by

what we can learn from each other and from where we overlap.
Guha's article critiqued the four main tenants of deep ecology

(which are, as he sees them,: a shift from anthropocentric to biocentric
ethics, a focus on preservation of wilderness, an invocation of Eastern
spiritual traditions, and a perception of being the vanguard of current
environmentalism) in order to show that, as is, deep ecology would only

Hayao Miyazaki is an ingenious Japanese animator and film director, and has created many beloved masterpieces that are both visually enchanting and
rich in meaning. Also known as the 'Japanese Walt Disney', Miyazaki has won numerous awards, for films including Spirited Away, Laputa: Castle In
The Sky and My Neighbour Totoro. Each of his movies have messages integrated into the storyline that delve into deeper issues relating to the current
world and society. Princess Mononoke is no exception and the intentions, choices and influences of Miyazaki are instrumental to understanding his
creation.
Unlike Miyazaki's usual 'entertainment first, lessons second' approach, Princess Mononoke was produced to inspire people to think about the issues
within the film. In Princess Mononoke, Miyazaki explores themes such as the environment and the conflict between humans and nature, and pacifism.
Environmentalism is often depicted in Miyazaki's films, due to his belief that people are intended to live amongst nature. The basis of Princess
Mononoke is centered around the forest, which is alive and thriving despite the growing threat of industrilisation. Throughout the movie, beautiful and
enchanting Japanese landscapes are shown, with clear signs of life (such as the Kodama spirits) in the forest. Kodama spirits are known in Japanese
