Alcohol Advertising And Media Influence On Drug Use
The use and abuse of psychoactive substances have long prevailed through history. For decades society has known about psychoactive substances and
many are presented through media as a norm. Throughout the American popular culture, the media frequently documented these substances through
movies, songs, TV shows, TV commercials, etc. Additionally, media has endorse good and bad stereotypes ofdrug use. Thus, research supports a
connection between media portrayals of drug use and the use of alcohol/tobacco or other drugs among children, adolescents or young adults.
One of America's popular movies is Scarface, a 1983 movie interpreted by Al Pacino. Scarface (1983), is a Americancrime film directed by Brian de

The purpose of this study was to reveal the influence of alcohol advertising and media contact on potential juvenile alcohol consumption. Thus, the
study was accomplished through a research of systematic studies done from 1990 to September 2008. These studies included "longitudinal studies in
which individuals drinking behavior and exposure to advertising, receptivity or attitudes to alcohol advertising, or brand awareness were measured at
baseline and individuals drinking behaviors were then measured in one or more follow up." (Anderson, 2009) The participants involved in the study
were adolescents aged 18 years or younger. Overall, the results indicated that the advertisement and promotion of alcohol enhances the probability that
youth will initiate to consume alcohol, and to augment drinking to those previously consuming

Mario Puzo was an American Screenwriter and Author who is best known for his Novel which was later adapted into one of the most famous movie
series of all times The Godfather.

"Sollozzo and Tattaglia let his hands go and only the strangler stayed with the victim, sinking to his knees to follow Luca's body, drawing the cord so
tight that it cut into the flesh of his neck and disappeared.Luca's eyes bulged out of his head as if in the utmost surprise and this surprise was the only
humanity remaining on him."

Light And Dark In The Godfather
Francis Coppola emphasizes the secrecy of the Mafia by concealing their shady business practices with low–key lighting and dark colors. Well–said;
nice topic sentence.] The lack of light and color gives off a powerful feeling of savagery owing to the reality of the story. Other than Orson Welles
Citizen Kane, selected as the greatest film in motion picture history for three decades by the American Film Institute, The Godfather creates the most
impressive display of film noir ever. Films predating this one rarely experimented with low lighting because no director had the audacity to take the
risk. That and no one had the right script for it. Interesting The Godfather's story contains a need for darkness in order to realistically portray the nature

Scarface Symbolism
Howard Hawks tour–de–force hit, Scarface, was the first significant film of real life organized crime in which the public actually got to see what
was going on. Not only is this film extremely dark, but it also gives the audience a feeling of a lifelike underworld of the upbringing of crime and
how it was and still is a major significance. What surprised me was that the film takes its subject matter very seriously, however it is very exciting as
well as filled with dark humor. What I noticed consistently throughout the film was that every time an X symbol appeared it signaled a murder was
about to happen. The X was symbolic which I found interesting. I also found it surprising that not a single drop of blood was shown. Considering the

Versions of the 'Gangs of New York': A Comparative Analysis
Whenever a work of literary nonfiction is adapted by filmmakers for the silver screen it is inevitable that certain truths will be stretched and liberties
taken in the name of creative license. This is undoubtedly true in the case of journalist Herbert Asbury's The Gangs of New York: An Informal History
of the Underworld, a seminal piece of investigative reporting weaved with lyrically lurid prose describing the debauchery, squalor and institutionalized
barbarism of the era. Published in 1928, Asbury's chronicle of the gangster culture spawned during New York City's turbulent adolescence became a
cult classic, one which eventually inspired famed American film director Martin Scorsese to try his hand at breathing life into the words. The result
was a sprawling masterpiece of epic proportions, combining tour de force cinematic performances by Daniel Day–Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio and
expertly deployed directorial vision. Nominated for a slew of Academy Awards following its 2002 release, Scorsese's artistic rendering of Asbury's
rigorous reporting was acclaimed by film critics and moviegoers alike, but historians have cast lingering doubts on the film's ultimate authenticity.
Accusations that Scorsese and screenwriter Jay Cocks distorted reality in the pursuit of profit abound, but testimonies attesting to the filmmakers'
intensive attention to regional dialect, period architecture and social context have muddled this debate. By closely comparing the textual evidence

Always Running Luis Changes
In the the story Always Running Luis the main character had many changes in his life. From being the innocent kid to becoming the violent, drug
addict, gang member teenager. Luis's character changes when he becomes involved in gangs, starts using drugs, and loses interest in education. These
changes made Luis a whole different person. Besides being violent he also became suicidal and depressed. Grillo's character changes throughout the
story when he begins to be involved in gangs. Grillo's change was mostly caused when he got jumped into Las Lomas gang because he became
more violent. For example, "Do it ! Were the last words I recalled before I plunged the screwdriver into flesh and bone and the sky
screamed"(pg.111). This quote illustrates how much more violent Grillo had become because prior to this incident Grillo had the consciousness to
not harm anyone. Unfortunately, within chapter five Grillo's consciousness was no longer in effect with his actions and the violence began. Another
change that Grillos had throughout the story was his drug use. He was stuck on spray and was becoming suicidal. For example, "I stole cans of
anything that could give me a buzz: carbono, clear plastic, paint or gasoline"(pg.102). This quote indicates that Grillo's usage of drugs was taking over
him. He didn't care about his life or anyone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Grillo to snap. He was confused to why the teacher was upset, Instead of amused for actually reading. As a result to the misunderstanding Grillo had

The Godfather Thesis
Director Francis Ford Coppola's dramatization The Godfather is a standout amongst the most venerated, acclaimed and powerful works of the
twentieth century. It is a movie magnum opus of business and basic achievement as such achieving that it routinely beat proficient and individual
records as the best film ever. With a story so soaked with profound subjects, solid characters, brilliant exhibitions, jazzy heading, and an ageless
soundtrack, there ought not be any miracle of why this work has stood the trial of time. Notwithstanding each one of those traits is the presentation of
rich social topics and changes all through the whole film.

A case of this would be that the Don never takes cash from customers and partners for noting a solicitation, for example, a hit, rather requiring
something more individual, for example, fellowship, administration, or favors. This is entirely clear in the opening scene when a funeral director
approaches the Don for equity against two men who frightfully assaulted and beat his little girl. He offers Vito cash for the hit which significantly insults
The Godfather. Simply after the funeral director understands the unintended offense and offers Vito his kinship does the Don assent to his solicitation.

Breakdown Of The Godfather
A breakdown of the movie: The Godfather (1972) "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse." If this quote stands out to you then you've probably
seen the all–time classic mafia film, The Godfather (1972). This quote tells tales about a more confusing time, when you simply could not take no for
an answer; if you did, your credibility and legacy would have diminished into thin air. Therefore, the "acts of persuasion" used that coincided with a
declined offer spoke volumes to not only the recipient of the offer, but to that of all parties involved; ultimately showing your unwillingness to accept
anything other than what you think is right and fair. We are going to delve into how this film came too, what made the film successful, the... Show more

There are 3 types of sounds used in The Godfather; dialogue, sound effects and music. You can correlate the dialogue, or what is said throughout the
film, to how you would imagine an American–Italian mobster talking, even today. Detailed sound is also very prominent, one scene where sound
used ambiguity to increase the connection between the film and viewer was during that of Sonny Corleone's death. In the beginning of that scene it
focuses on the traffic noise and the ball game playing in the background. You are startled by the ringing of the toll booth as the gate comes down and
then hearing his change hit the tollbooth floor. When all seems normal there is a hail of gunfire from every side and you can specifically hear his
screams, glass shattering and him falling to the ground. They are very intricate sounds you would not normally hear over a hail of gunfire from dozens
of tommy guns. Music is used to help the audience relate to the mafia family. From the subtle background music that plays at the beginning to the
theme music played while Michael was in Sicily. With the music and gunfire being very prominent in the film it definitely allows the audience to
automatically view and relate this to a "gangster

God Father Symbolism
The 1930's and 40's were a famous time for gangsters, mobs and mafias. The God Father directed by Francis Ford Coppola and written by Mario
Puzo focuses on this era. Gangster genre films always seem to have dark colors and low lighting, usually an urban city location and outfitting is
formal, props in these films are guns, cigars/cigarettes, drugs and money. Everything is put in a film for a reason and all these elements combine
to create a typical gangster setting. But, The God Father was not a typical gangster film. Mario Puzo used many, if not all of these elements but he
refined the gangster genre using intricate editing techinques. In the first scene at his daughters' wedding, Bonasera asks Don Carleone to avenge
his daughters assaliant. The lighting in this scene was dark and the camera angles high and low symbolizing who had the most power. It worked
for this particluar scene because they were doing a back door dealing and also showed us how Don Carleone was looked up to and respected by
others. The film is set in 1940's New York, Don Corleone and his men are always seen in formal wear, and Corleone had a cigar in a number of
scenes although we dont see stacks of money all the time it is shown to us indirectly when we see his mansion and expensive cars and fancy dinners.
This also worked for the film because it was historically correct, 1940's New York was home to many mobsters and crime families and the outfits
represented their status in society. In my opinion I

Childhood In My Childhood
Decapitated baby dolls and rated R movies shaped my childhood. Now, before you throw my essay in the round file and write me off as a potential
serial killer, hear me out. I was not raised like many of my peers. Obviously, most of their parents made sure that the movies they viewed were age
appropriate and I am pretty sure they would not have been so passive if the found dismembered baby dolls in their daughter's playroom. However, my
parents were different... very different. Instead of watching the typical family movies such as Matilda and Toy Story, my family spent our weekends
watching The Matrix Series and The Godfather Trilogy. While most may not agree with these customs, my seven–year–old mind was far more thrilled
at hearing Marlon Brando saying "kiss the ring" rather than Woody talk about snakes and boots. Besides, I closed my eyes during the intimate scenes so
that makes everything okay, right?
No, it does not; however, this rather peculiar childhood has shaped most of my strongest ideals and assisted in the modeling of my present self. In
the movie, Don Corleone (Marlon Brando), says "a man who [does not] spend time with his family can never be a real man". This quote has
remained a valued aphorism in my family and my dedication to it is displayed in the way I am perceived by others. From birthday parties to sports,
my family does everything together, so much so, people are surprised and sometimes worried if they notice a member of our group did not accompany

Analysis Of The Use Of Lighting In The Godfather Essay
I am writing about the use of lighting in the opening scene of The Godfather, (1). The
photography of The Godfather as an entire film is very planned and used specifically to
generate moods, and have great psychological affect. This is just as true for the very first series of shots for the film, and perhaps more important since
these first shots will give the audience the initial feeling of the film, and set a tone for the picture. The first shot is highly dramatic in its lighting
method, and the audience is drawn in immediately to one single detail. A man begins revealing the details of a tragic incident that befell his daughter.
We don't see who he is talking to. There is aspotlight directly above the man, and this is pretty much ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This highlight area of his eye is the part of the frame which has the greatest contrast, so naturally the audience is drawn directly into this man's stare,
and this is also achieved by having the man look right at the camera. As he speaks, the camera slowly pulls out and then we start to see a slight
increase in the surrounding detail of the scene. We can now see part of the back and side of the Godfather, (Marlon Brando) but still we have only
a slight highlight on his side, and no detail. Now the man gets up and moves to Brando's side, and he too is in complete shadow; we can only
really make out the fact that there are two figures present here, no more. Then the shot changes as the man leaves the Godfather's side, and it is a
revealing frontal MCU of Brando. This shot is lit much more than the previous shot. Where the other shot's background was pitch black, this shot is
lit so that almost the whole space and all objects in it are visible. Brando has a key, fill and backlight on him, and his character is revealed with much
intensity because of the dramatic light change from shot to shot. When the shot comes back to the man, in an over the shoulder (Brando) style, again
the backround is totally black. Having the man in that particular lighting, and having Brando lit the way he is serves two psychological purposes. First,
having the constant black background behind the man isolates his problem and makes us aware of how consumed he is with his problem.

Vito Corleone Archetype
Vito Corleone Vito Corleone of The Godfather trilogy is shown to be the Mafia boss character archetype done right. While the other characters have
their own strengths, their weaknesses are brought to light when around Vito. Barzini lacks the class of the don, Ciccio is more petty and cruel,
Fanucci is rather brutish, and Michael does not have the warmth and joie de vivre that Vito possesses. While it can be debatable whether or not the
"the old man [is] slipping," he still has the wisdom and intelligence that makes him a capable leader of the Mafia. Most of the time, he is shown to be
silent, intense, and has no conflicting or regrettable feelings for his actions. Vito is also able to read the intentions of others, is a smooth and subtle

At the beginning of the series, he had wanted to become a senator, or possibly the President of the United States. However, vengeance drives him to
take part in his family's illegal actions that he once wanted to be separated from. While he is reluctant to take on such responsibilities, initially not
feeling fully reconciled when he works for his father, he shows that he can be cold–blooded, ruthless, and determined for the job. Not only that, but he
can think under pressure, is a decisive individual, and is able to command respect. Thus, Vito is able to let him take charge. Michael can represent
two character archetypes: the child of an immigrant seeking the American dream and the fallen hero. The American dream has a variety of
meanings to different people, but in this case, it would mean that Michael is working to achieve success much like his parents did. It is
recognized that the cost of working towards success comes at a price, but this is where the fallen hero trope comes into play. When Michael
decides to seek revenge, he works for the Mafia and believes he is a sacrificial hero to the family he's trying to raise, slaving away for their sake. He
had good intentions; he only wanted to bring legitimacy to his family. Rather than the results being that they were safe and well off, this leads him to
lose his wife and children,

Kay's Role In The Godfather
The Godfather by Mario Puzo has stood the test of time. Many differ in their opinions about this novel. Some enjoy the action while others focus on
the negative aspects about women portrayed throughout the storyline. The rhetoric Puzo places on the pages plays out scenes of violence, family,
loyalty and at times romance. The era in which this story takes place must adhere to real to life actions of the characters in order for the reader to
transform his or herself into this fictional world. For example, in an essay Lessnor wrote "In The Godfather the role of women is limited to being the

The answer really is–NO. She is the backbone of the family. Even though she does not have a long part in the story, she is there. She is given the
respect that a woman of her time period usually does not have. She is not in need of a first name for there is only one Mama Corleone and

Comparison of the Characters Michael Sonny in "The Godfather"
At a first glance Michael and Sonny appear to be quite different. Upon further observation, however, they do have some similarities. Although they are
very different in their personality, values, and tempers, they are similar in areas of loyalty, their respect for their father, and their strong familyties.
Their personalities are a study in contrasts. Sonny is brash and arrogant, where as Michael is calm and cool. When Don Corleone was in the hospital

should have known better, but all he had on his mind was vengeance. Michael on the other hand is fairly calm about things. He knows that Carlos was
involved in Sonny's death, but he lets it go until the time is right to deal with it.
They shared similar loyalties. They did what they needed to do for their friends and family. When others help them out, they do the same. Although
Sonny felt that the move towards narcotics was a good idea, he didn't go in that direction when he was in charge. They both had great admiration and
respect for their father. When he wanted something done they jumped. When he was shot, Michael rushed home to see if he could help. He eventually
got involved in the family business because of this. Michael and Sonny both wanted the people who had been involved in the shooting to pay
irregardless of the costs.
Finally both Michael and Sonny had strong family ties (towards the Corleone family). When a member of the family needed something they gave it

Comparing The American Dream In 'The Way To Wealth'
In The Way to Wealth, Benjamin Franklin uses slick phrasing and cute couplets to represent his rise from a large, working

Puzo's early novels, The Dark Arena and The Fortunate Pilgrim, exhibit the realistic narrative style typical of his later fiction and are considered minor
classics of Italian–American literature. The Dark Arena talks about an American soldier who came back to a occupied Germany after the Second World
War. Introducing the theme of violent retribution, Puzo's protagonist kills a black market drug supplier to show his rage at government , corruption in
postwar Europe, and his own failure to secure lifesaving medication for his German girlfriend. In The Fortunate Pilgrim, Puzo takes us to Hell's kitchen
and talks about the experiences of an Italian woman who struggles to surmount poverty and crime. Though extolling her courage, cunning, and
traditional values Puzo's description of petty criminal activity in the poor Italian–American neighbourhood offers ironic justification for the life of
crime as an alternate means of achieving the American Dream. The themes that are central to Mario Puzos Godfather are criminal legitimacy and
revenge, in which Puzo chronicles the ascent of the Corleone Mafia family under the leadership of Don Vito Corleone, a criminal mastermind, and his
sons. Drawing parallels to American corporate structure, Don Vito's benevolent authority is founded on supreme organizational control, calculated
judgment, and swift retaliation against all enemies of the family, including traitors and the incompetent within the clan as well as members of opposing
factions. In The Godfather Puzo begins to explore the dubious status of organized crime as a self–sufficient social entity governed by its own hallowed
customs and rigid codes of behavior, particularly personal honour and loyalty. The Sicilian is regarded as a sequel toThe Godfather, Puzo revisits the
Corleone family.

Scarface Movie Themes
The film Scarface directed by Howard Hanks displays the rise and fall of gangster Tony Camonte. One of the main themes I picked up on in the
film was the incestuous interest between Tony and his sister Cesca. To me, Tony is very protective of his sister comparable to a jealous boyfriend.
At one point he catches his sister kissing another man and scares him off. Cesca and Tony then proceed to get into an argument where he
aggressively rips off a piece of her clothing. Another incident that occurred between the two was when Tony returned home after a month of being
away to find his partner Guino living with Cesca. Tony then proceeds to shoot Guino and kills him in front of Cesca who claimed to have loved
him. Lastly at the end of the movie where Cesca is about to shoot Tony but instead refuses only to run into his arms. Later a police bullet hits Cesca
in the chest resulting in her death and one of the last things Tony says to her is "without you I am completely alone". Why I thought this played a
big impact in the movie was because to me it seemed as if Tony was searching for some sort of love from his sister. At one point Cesca says she
doesn't even recognize him as her brother anymore. I believe this is why Tony felt no remorse for all the people he murdered, he felt empty and alone
which is what he says to Cesca in her final moments.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the time period where Americans were losing their prized processions, Tony was showering himself in expensive clothing, jewelry, etc. This

Not only can the surrounding environment and consequent lifestyle our characters lead make a significant impact on a film, a likeably or at least some
sort of sympathy with our protagonists is crucial to its success. Our predominant Anti–hero, Vito Corleone, the Don of the family, is a man who, with
politicians in his pocket, connections to every field in business and a substantial bit of wealth to his name, has the sway to have a large say. From
camera–shots screened from his perspective, to the way he is addressed and responded to, his power is re–confirmed throughout the film. Easily, a

Film Analysis Of The Godfather
Throughout the film with being the Godfather, Vito is continually asked by relatives and close friends to complete favors for them in effort to solve
their problems. This factor implies that during this time the Mafia was an influential organization that operated behind the scenes. In the film, John
Fontane is having trouble with receiving a movie role that he has desired. As a result, Vito has a member confront the director Jack Woltz to make a
very desirable deal. This does not end up well do to the director's non–attractiveness to John Fontane. I felt this was an important scene within the film
The Godfather because it was one of the first instances where it made the viewer scared to disagree with Vito Corleone. It represented his unwillingness
to settle for anything less then he believed and the unpleasant truth of dealing with a criminal organization. The significance of killing Jack Woltz's
most prized possession horse, resembles that the Godfather does not care who you are or how close you may be. With Jack waking up in a pool
of blood from his dead horse that was placed in the bed, illustrates to the audience his poor decision. The use of editing within the scene played an
important role, with slowly giving the audience a view of what happening to Jack Waltz. At first you see Jack Waltz with what he appears to be
bleeding, but as the camera pans across the bed, the audience soon realizes it is the blood of the horse's head that was left in the bed. Due the way that

##re Analysis : The Godfather Movie Of The Gangster Genre
Genre theory is a way to help one study films and to classify films into different groups so that viewers have an idea of what they will be watching
before they even watch it. The genre is like a glossary for movies. All films fall under at least one genre and most can be more narrowly categorized
into sub genres. (Goodykoontz &Jacobs, 2014, table 4.1). Moreover, one of the more iconic and popular genres would have to be the gangster film
genre. However, there are many other genres, but the gangster film just does not have as many sub–genres. That is why my paper will focus on the "The
Godfather" movie of the gangster genre in which is characterized by organized crime. The Drama and Gangster Drama can exhibit or display real life
situations with realistic characters, settings that support the stories. The Gangster Drama genres characteristics include "Films that deal with organized
crime, often mob families" (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014).
The gangster movies that we all know and have seen took place in the 1930's–1980's, during the great depression. Therefore, I will help the audience
breakdown the empathy for the criminal protagonist and characteristics of gangster films where they often emphasize the main character's rise of
power to an unbelievable fall. Furthermore, I have chosen the gangster genre because they always favor the bad guy and this makes the film The
Godfather so legendary and stands strong in this genre. The Godfather was released on March 14, 1972. The film was written by Mario Puzo and
directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The lead character is played by Al Pacino (Michael Corleone), with supporting actors Marlon Brando (Vito Corleone

Vito Corleone: Marlon Brando In The Godfather
INTRODUCTION
Vito Corleone, played by actor Marlon Brando in The Godfather, is the mafia don of the Corleone crime family (Coppola 1972). Due to his social and
political capital, Corleone has a great deal of influence over his family and associates, as well as politicians and law enforcement in New York, which
can be considered one of his most important assets (ibid). The negotiation being analyzed is Corleone's meeting with the Virgil "The Turk" Sollozzo,
a New York drug trafficker who is backed by a rivalcrime family, the Tattaglia's. Sollozzo's overall goal is to negotiate an investment and legal
protection for his drug trafficking by offering Corleone a fixed percentage of the profits (ibid). Corleone has a vested interest in 'staying ahead' and
maintaining his status and power among the rival crime families; however, he realizes that his involvement in drug trafficking may jeopardize his
political ties (ibid). The negation is interesting because it is fueled by implicit meaning, involving the precarious balance of power and trust between
each party involved that influences the strength of their position in the argument and the concessions they are willing to make.
The proceedings of the negation can be understood through negotiation theories including Simons and Tripp's (1997) 'Negotiation ... Show more content

Movie Review : The Return Of Superfly
The film American Gangster was released on November 2nd, 2007 and was directed by Ridley Scott. The movie was based on the book The Return of
Superfly by Mark Jacobson. Some of the principle actors in the movie were: Russell Crowe as Detective Richard "Richie" Roberts, Denzel Washington
as Frank Lucas, and Cuba Gooding Jr. as Leroy Nicholas "Nicky" Barnes. The film is well–known as a mobster film because it based on the true story
of Frank Lucas and the drug rings in Harlem. In the film, both the local level individuals (growers or producers of cocaine) and the higher (syndicate)
individuals were portrayed. These two groups were in the trade for one reason: money. The lower level producers were primarily based out of
countries with extreme poverty; the cocaine business brought in a huge influx of income for the workers. This provided incentive to continue, though
the work was hard. The higher–level syndicate individuals received a massive profit off the product sales. It allowed them to live comfortable lives
and pay off other high ranking individuals for protection. However, there is another reason why these higher–level individuals are in the business. In
American Gangster, Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) commandeered the market on cocaine with his product Blue Magic. This gave him enormous
powers over the streets of Harlem, along with his presence as a philanthropist. Power means money; the more power Lucas had, the more money he
made.

What Is The Theme Of The Godfather
Produced by Albert S. Ruddy, and directed by Francis Coppola, The film God Father is regarded one the greatest movie in history. It is based on
Mario Puzo's novel 'The God Father'. Some of the actors starring in the movie include Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard Conte among
others. The theme of violence is evident all through the film. The story of 'The Godfather' is told with a closed world, it gives the audience a chance to
review the Mafia utterly on its own terms. Character Don Vito Corleone played by Marlon Brando, is seen as a sympathetic and admirable character.
As all through the film, he does everything that is expected from a mafia, which receives approval from the audience. In the movie, there is no civilian
causality of an organized crime, only corrupt police.
The story reviews the mafia life from the inside, and as expected by the audience such life is secretive, addictive in a way. The story has shaped the
public perception on the mafia. In the film the Godfather takes control of power and justice, his only nemeses are traitors and snitches. For instance,

How The Godfather refines female roles
Masculinity in The Godfather
Thesis
The Godfather is a depiction of the stereotypical divide between male dominance and female submissive nature.
Introduction
The Godfather is a film made by Francis Ford Coppola in 1972 and it is a depiction of a used world where men are responsible for making all important
decisions and women are excluded from any knowledge of anything going on.
Male masculinity
How The Godfather portrays men? It is a series of movies where men are shown romantically with a comparison to the culture. This movie shows
vengeance and the males are obsessed with figures of power and authority and the society is divided into hierarchies that show dominance over women.
The film examines the issue of masculinity in a complex manner.

The Godfather Violence
The Godfather (1972) is a one of a kind film. I consider it one of the best American classics. This film has it all from amazing action scenes that have
you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what is going to happen next. The film also includes incredible famous actors, which includes Marlon
Brando, Al Pacino, and James Cann among many others. Throughout the film the main theme of the film overall is violence. It is either really
happening in a scene or it is being talked about between the characters in the film. But in my opinion it all this violence that makes this film a classic.

The way in which gangster figures are portrayed with consideration to gender roles and ethnicity within each film will be analysed. 'The Godfather',
'Pulp Fiction' and 'Scarface' are being explored because they are three movies known for being inspirational in establishing the gangster genre
conventions at various points in film history. 'Scarface' was highly influential within this genre and when it was released there was not the same
censorship as there is in the 21st century. The representation of gangster figures has been a controversial topic throughout the 20th and 21st century

Similarly to 'Scarface' and 'The Godfather', violence and crime are key themes in the films and therefore the male characters dominate the violent
scenes and radiate willpower. Mia Wallace, the wife of the gangster Marsellus Wallace is portrayed as powerful and seductive. At first, it appears
that she is stable within her relationship with Wallace, and is additionally feared by other individuals such as Vincent, when he arrives at her
house to escort her for a night out. However, later on Mia mistakes heroin for cocaine and manages to overdose, which results in her relying on the
man in her life because she is so weak. Even so, in the promotional poster of 'Pulp Fiction', Uma Thurman (Mia), is shown posing on a bed with a
cigarette in one hand and a gun in front of her. This in many ways signifies power as the gun has become a key piece of iconography in the
gangster genre, and guns hold a lot of power in them as they have the ability, with help, to kill or cause serious bodily harm. Nevertheless, this is
misleading as the women, specifically Mia Wallace, do not actually hold any power in the film. Mia Wallace's character is a reminder of Marsellus'

killings of the movie.
The director of the movie(Frances Ford Copolla) has a very good use of montage, and long shots. Capolla starts off the movie with an extrodonary
shot of an undertaker saying "this is America." Which gives a glimpse of how haunting the film is going to be? A good use of long shots is perfect
when the camera pans around the long shot as Mikey takes on the responsibility of getting revenge for his fathers shooting. Also a good example of
Copolla's long shots is when the film is about to end and there is a shot of Diane Keaton looking so innocent and really knowing nothing of the

The Godfather, The Exorcist, And The Silence Of The Lambs
The Godfather, The Exorcist, and The Silence of the Lambs are three films that are often given the title "greatest of all time" in their respective genre,
for very good reason. Each film consists of scenes that are crafted so unforgettably that the scenes leave each viewer with a sense of awe, shock, and
horror when each scene is carefully examined. The Godfather, distributed in 1972 by Paramount Pictures, was directed by Francis Ford Coppola who in
an interview said in regards to his filmmaking that "If you don't take a risk then how are you going to make something really beautiful, that hasn't
been seen before?" (1). The Godfather certainly presented cinema with iconic and memorable scenes that were both beautiful and never before seen
largely due to the new and risky ways Francis Ford Coppola presented The Godfather's narrative. Similarly, The Exorcist chilled the bones of
audiences everywhere by shocking the world with grueling demonic possession in a tangible way that had never been presented before by cinema.
The scenes in The Exorcist were particularly memorable because the scenes resonated with a large majority of American audiences who came from
religious backgrounds where demonic possession is a sincere possibility; never before had a film brought Americans face–to–face with The Devil,
Hell, and sin by means of horror. Horror was also a key element in Jonathan Demme's 1991 classic The Silence of the Lambs. Horror made each scene

Vito Corleone, the "godfather" of the family is a very diverse character. He is intelligent, clever and an excellent speaker. Like the tagline of the

also a ruthless person, if he cannot deal with words, guns and bullets will. Even with his supposed evil, he is seen as many as a very loving father
and many people love him. He was clearly hurt when he found out Michael gunned down Sollozo and McClusckey, indicating he loved Michael
that he didn't want his son to be part of any crime. He is able to separate blood and water, and embrace them both, evident when he adopted and
raised Tom Hagen like he was a son. He also show a deep sense of morality, not agreeing to the dawning drug business at first, and when he did agree,

The Use Of Light In The Film Citizen Kane
INTRODUCTION
In films a big concept has always been the use of lights. The use of lights in films helps create a meaning about what the scene is about and at times
reveals a little more. In cinematography there is different types of lighting such as: three point lighting, fill light, key light, high key and low key
lighting, top or under, lighting and many more. In the times when films were black and white the use of light is not easily visible. The use of black
and white still helped portray the meaning behind many of the scenes, whether the scene got lighter or darker.A film that was successful in using white
and black was Citizen Kane by Orson Welles. A film that was in color was the Godfather directed byFrancis Ford Coppola. The use of lighting reflects
within color because it gives the audience more to look at and it becomes very noticeable when the light changes for a specific scene. The use of
lighting styles is necessary in films to bring attention to the scene and to be able to produce an interesting film. The director of Citizen Kane had the
choice of making the film black and white or color but eventually decided to create it in black and white. In an interview about the film Citizen Kane
a critic acknowledged the use of light and said "Exploiting light and shadow inventively to express meaning and establish a desired atmosphere made
Orson Welles' 'Citizen Kane' a significant historical event that impacted both audiences and film genre in many ways." The

"The Godfather", written by Mario Puzo in 1969, was adapted into film and directed by Francis Ford Coppola in the 1970s. The story is about an

Growing up as a child Brando's life was built upon lies and stories. He was told by his mother that he was Native American, and his father was an

real truth was Brando was a Mexican American and his father abandoned him and his mother at a young age. Growing up Brando had to face

Every time he tries so hard to love one they would always break his heart. He even mentions it in the book "my biological father Candido Ulloa, was

going to go on a trip to see his father who's is in jail but later he found out that was a lie too. Brando and his mother were really close at one point in

Film Contributions of the Sixties Essay
Film Contributions of the Sixties Beginning roughly with the release of Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Stopped Worrying and Loved the
Bomb in 1964, and continuing for about the next decade, the "Sixties" era of filmmaking made many lasting impressions on the motion picture
industry. Although editing and pacing styles varied greatly from Martin Scorcesse's hyperactivepace, to Kubrick's slow methodical pace, there were
many uniform contributions made by some of the era's seminal directors. In particular, the "Sixties" saw the return of the auteur, as people like Francis

These sequences are a result of a film, which for most of its run time does not presented the subjective vision of any one character. In stylistic and
visual terms, there is a movement from the three–dimensional style of the film's first half to the flatter, more abstract visual style of the Star–Gate
sequence. The film's movement towards abstraction can be understood both in visual and narrative terms (Falsetto, 115).
2001's presentation of details from the "Dawn of Man" sequence, to later space travel scenes are shot with complete conviction and impeccable
detail. The viewer believes that the world might have actually looked like what Kubrick presented it as, several million years ago, and the depiction
of space travel is just as convincing. The use of models, front projection, the slow editing techniques and camera work all help to create a more
complete illusion (Falsetto, 141).
If 2001 was presented almost completely objectively, than Kubrick's next film, A Clockwork Orange (1972) was presented almost completely
subjectively. This may have been in part due to the constraints of the original novel by William Burgess, but nonetheless the film is told from the
point of view of its central character, Alex. When Alex is not speaking on camera, he can often be heard as a voiced over

the film because at first he was afraid of being a part of his family business or in other words in new "experiences." This chapter also talks about
behaviors in relationships, in this case we can say that Michael behaviors or relationships towards his family was lacking because he didn't wanted to
support his family until the very last moment when his family was really being threatened by enemies. We can also compare the book supportive
communication with romantic partners with this film because at the end Michael had to lie to his romantic partner because in some way he wanted to

Dichotomy In The Godfather
The crime organization that originated in Italy continues to exert its dominance over mainstream media. The organization's ability to consume
individuals entirely and create its own lifestyle coincides with the attribute of human nature that calls for a sense of belonging. This lifestyle has been
depicted in several different forms of media, such as literature and film, for several years. In the film, The Godfather (1974), Francis Ford Coppola
introduces the dichotomy of Don Vito Corleone, the sadistic, cruel mob leader, yet protective, compassionate father and husband. The ideals of family
values and tradition are so neatly interwoven into this obscene lifestyle that it is nearly impossible to disassociate the two. Therefore, Don Corleone, ...

He is the loving father who will support his children under any and all circumstances, the father who defends the honor of those he loves. This
directly clashes with his role in the crime family as the boss. In his essay, "The Thematic Paradigm," Robert B. Ray argues that "such two sided
characters seemed particularly designed to appeal to a collective American imagination steeped in myths of inclusiveness" in order to captivate a more
complex society (Ray 377). The complication of taking on the roles of father and mob boss begin with the form of business mob families conduct.
Involvement in several forms of illegal activity such as gambling, prostitution, and drug trafficking began to evolve into the social norm for the mafia.
In the film, Don Corleone and those in his mob family are not opposed to participating in high scale gambling and racketeering but refuse to
participate in the drug trade due to it being a "dirty business". Don Corleone expresses his disinterest with the trade because of its moral implications
and the destruction of the lives of others. It is rather ironic that the Don and his mafia are so willing to stain their hands with the blood of other men
yet refuse to take on another form of income for their

Alcohol Advertising And Media Influence On Drug Use

  • 1. Alcohol Advertising And Media Influence On Drug Use The use and abuse of psychoactive substances have long prevailed through history. For decades society has known about psychoactive substances and many are presented through media as a norm. Throughout the American popular culture, the media frequently documented these substances through movies, songs, TV shows, TV commercials, etc. Additionally, media has endorse good and bad stereotypes ofdrug use. Thus, research supports a connection between media portrayals of drug use and the use of alcohol/tobacco or other drugs among children, adolescents or young adults. One of America's popular movies is Scarface, a 1983 movie interpreted by Al Pacino. Scarface (1983), is a Americancrime film directed by Brian de Palma, written by Oliver Stone which tells a story of a Cuban refugee ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The purpose of this study was to reveal the influence of alcohol advertising and media contact on potential juvenile alcohol consumption. Thus, the study was accomplished through a research of systematic studies done from 1990 to September 2008. These studies included "longitudinal studies in which individuals drinking behavior and exposure to advertising, receptivity or attitudes to alcohol advertising, or brand awareness were measured at baseline and individuals drinking behaviors were then measured in one or more follow up." (Anderson, 2009) The participants involved in the study were adolescents aged 18 years or younger. Overall, the results indicated that the advertisement and promotion of alcohol enhances the probability that youth will initiate to consume alcohol, and to augment drinking to those previously consuming ... • 3. Light And Dark In The Godfather Francis Coppola emphasizes the secrecy of the Mafia by concealing their shady business practices with low–key lighting and dark colors. Well–said; nice topic sentence.] The lack of light and color gives off a powerful feeling of savagery owing to the reality of the story. Other than Orson Welles Citizen Kane, selected as the greatest film in motion picture history for three decades by the American Film Institute, The Godfather creates the most impressive display of film noir ever. Films predating this one rarely experimented with low lighting because no director had the audacity to take the risk. That and no one had the right script for it. Don't end sentences with a preposition! The flower seems to represent his heart, as to remind the audience that Vito has one and although he runs a mob family he is not an animal. The first frame of the film comes from darkness, as does the mob. When the undertaker pronounces, "I believe in America" the frame comes to light, revealing the face of the speaker. • 4. Scarface Symbolism Howard Hawks tour–de–force hit, Scarface, was the first significant film of real life organized crime in which the public actually got to see what was going on. Not only is this film extremely dark, but it also gives the audience a feeling of a lifelike underworld of the upbringing of crime and how it was and still is a major significance. What surprised me was that the film takes its subject matter very seriously, however it is very exciting as well as filled with dark humor. What I noticed consistently throughout the film was that every time an X symbol appeared it signaled a murder was about to happen. The X was symbolic which I found interesting. I also found it surprising that not a single drop of blood was shown. Considering the time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Versions of the 'Gangs of New York': A Comparative Analysis Whenever a work of literary nonfiction is adapted by filmmakers for the silver screen it is inevitable that certain truths will be stretched and liberties taken in the name of creative license. This is undoubtedly true in the case of journalist Herbert Asbury's The Gangs of New York: An Informal History of the Underworld, a seminal piece of investigative reporting weaved with lyrically lurid prose describing the debauchery, squalor and institutionalized barbarism of the era. Published in 1928, Asbury's chronicle of the gangster culture spawned during New York City's turbulent adolescence became a cult classic, one which eventually inspired famed American film director Martin Scorsese to try his hand at breathing life into the words. The result was a sprawling masterpiece of epic proportions, combining tour de force cinematic performances by Daniel Day–Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio and expertly deployed directorial vision. Nominated for a slew of Academy Awards following its 2002 release, Scorsese's artistic rendering of Asbury's rigorous reporting was acclaimed by film critics and moviegoers alike, but historians have cast lingering doubts on the film's ultimate authenticity. Accusations that Scorsese and screenwriter Jay Cocks distorted reality in the pursuit of profit abound, but testimonies attesting to the filmmakers' intensive attention to regional dialect, period architecture and social context have muddled this debate. By closely comparing the textual evidence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From being the innocent kid to becoming the violent, drug addict, gang member teenager. Luis's character changes when he becomes involved in gangs, starts using drugs, and loses interest in education. These changes made Luis a whole different person. Besides being violent he also became suicidal and depressed. Grillo's character changes throughout the story when he begins to be involved in gangs. Grillo's change was mostly caused when he got jumped into Las Lomas gang because he became more violent. For example, "Do it ! Were the last words I recalled before I plunged the screwdriver into flesh and bone and the sky screamed"(pg.111). This quote illustrates how much more violent Grillo had become because prior to this incident Grillo had the consciousness to not harm anyone. Unfortunately, within chapter five Grillo's consciousness was no longer in effect with his actions and the violence began. Another change that Grillos had throughout the story was his drug use. He was stuck on spray and was becoming suicidal. For example, "I stole cans of anything that could give me a buzz: carbono, clear plastic, paint or gasoline"(pg.102). • 7. The Godfather Thesis Director Francis Ford Coppola's dramatization The Godfather is a standout amongst the most venerated, acclaimed and powerful works of the twentieth century. It is a movie magnum opus of business and basic achievement as such achieving that it routinely beat proficient and individual records as the best film ever. With a story so soaked with profound subjects, solid characters, brilliant exhibitions, jazzy heading, and an ageless soundtrack, there ought not be any miracle of why this work has stood the trial of time. Simply after the funeral director understands the unintended offense and offers Vito his kinship does the Don assent to his solicitation. • 8. Breakdown Of The Godfather A breakdown of the movie: The Godfather (1972) "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse." If this quote stands out to you then you've probably seen the all–time classic mafia film, The Godfather (1972). This quote tells tales about a more confusing time, when you simply could not take no for an answer; if you did, your credibility and legacy would have diminished into thin air. Therefore, the "acts of persuasion" used that coincided with a declined offer spoke volumes to not only the recipient of the offer, but to that of all parties involved; ultimately showing your unwillingness to accept anything other than what you think is right and fair. There are 3 types of sounds used in The Godfather; dialogue, sound effects and music. You can correlate the dialogue, or what is said throughout the film, to how you would imagine an American–Italian mobster talking, even today. Detailed sound is also very prominent, one scene where sound used ambiguity to increase the connection between the film and viewer was during that of Sonny Corleone's death. In the beginning of that scene it focuses on the traffic noise and the ball game playing in the background. You are startled by the ringing of the toll booth as the gate comes down and then hearing his change hit the tollbooth floor. When all seems normal there is a hail of gunfire from every side and you can specifically hear his screams, glass shattering and him falling to the ground. They are very intricate sounds you would not normally hear over a hail of gunfire from dozens of tommy guns. Music is used to help the audience relate to the mafia family. • 9. God Father Symbolism The 1930's and 40's were a famous time for gangsters, mobs and mafias. The God Father directed by Francis Ford Coppola and written by Mario Puzo focuses on this era. Gangster genre films always seem to have dark colors and low lighting, usually an urban city location and outfitting is formal, props in these films are guns, cigars/cigarettes, drugs and money. Everything is put in a film for a reason and all these elements combine to create a typical gangster setting. But, The God Father was not a typical gangster film. Mario Puzo used many, if not all of these elements but he refined the gangster genre using intricate editing techinques. In the first scene at his daughters' wedding, Bonasera asks Don Carleone to avenge his daughters assaliant. The lighting in this scene was dark and the camera angles high and low symbolizing who had the most power. It worked for this particluar scene because they were doing a back door dealing and also showed us how Don Carleone was looked up to and respected by others. The film is set in 1940's New York, Don Corleone and his men are always seen in formal wear, and Corleone had a cigar in a number of scenes although we dont see stacks of money all the time it is shown to us indirectly when we see his mansion and expensive cars and fancy dinners. This also worked for the film because it was historically correct, 1940's New York was home to many mobsters and crime families and the outfits represented their status in society. • 10. Childhood In My Childhood Decapitated baby dolls and rated R movies shaped my childhood. Now, before you throw my essay in the round file and write me off as a potential serial killer, hear me out. I was not raised like many of my peers. Obviously, most of their parents made sure that the movies they viewed were age appropriate and I am pretty sure they would not have been so passive if the found dismembered baby dolls in their daughter's playroom. However, my parents were different... very different. Instead of watching the typical family movies such as Matilda and Toy Story, my family spent our weekends watching The Matrix Series and The Godfather Trilogy. While most may not agree with these customs, my seven–year–old mind was far more thrilled at hearing Marlon Brando saying "kiss the ring" rather than Woody talk about snakes and boots. Besides, I closed my eyes during the intimate scenes so that makes everything okay, right? No, it does not; however, this rather peculiar childhood has shaped most of my strongest ideals and assisted in the modeling of my present self. In the movie, Don Corleone (Marlon Brando), says "a man who [does not] spend time with his family can never be a real man". This quote has remained a valued aphorism in my family and my dedication to it is displayed in the way I am perceived by others. From birthday parties to sports, my family does everything together, so much so, people are surprised and sometimes worried if they notice a member of our group did not accompany us on ... • 12. Analysis Of The Use Of Lighting In The Godfather Essay I am writing about the use of lighting in the opening scene of The Godfather, (1). The photography of The Godfather as an entire film is very planned and used specifically to generate moods, and have great psychological affect. This is just as true for the very first series of shots for the film, and perhaps more important since these first shots will give the audience the initial feeling of the film, and set a tone for the picture. The first shot is highly dramatic in its lighting method, and the audience is drawn in immediately to one single detail. A man begins revealing the details of a tragic incident that befell his daughter. We don't see who he is talking to. There is aspotlight directly above the man, and this is pretty much ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This highlight area of his eye is the part of the frame which has the greatest contrast, so naturally the audience is drawn directly into this man's stare, and this is also achieved by having the man look right at the camera. As he speaks, the camera slowly pulls out and then we start to see a slight increase in the surrounding detail of the scene. We can now see part of the back and side of the Godfather, (Marlon Brando) but still we have only a slight highlight on his side, and no detail. Now the man gets up and moves to Brando's side, and he too is in complete shadow; we can only really make out the fact that there are two figures present here, no more. Then the shot changes as the man leaves the Godfather's side, and it is a revealing frontal MCU of Brando. This shot is lit much more than the previous shot. Where the other shot's background was pitch black, this shot is lit so that almost the whole space and all objects in it are visible. Brando has a key, fill and backlight on him, and his character is revealed with much intensity because of the dramatic light change from shot to shot. When the shot comes back to the man, in an over the shoulder (Brando) style, again the backround is totally black. Having the man in that particular lighting, and having Brando lit the way he is serves two psychological purposes. First, having the constant black background behind the man isolates his problem and makes us aware of how consumed he is with his problem. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Vito Corleone Archetype Vito Corleone Vito Corleone of The Godfather trilogy is shown to be the Mafia boss character archetype done right. While the other characters have their own strengths, their weaknesses are brought to light when around Vito. Barzini lacks the class of the don, Ciccio is more petty and cruel, Fanucci is rather brutish, and Michael does not have the warmth and joie de vivre that Vito possesses. While it can be debatable whether or not the "the old man [is] slipping," he still has the wisdom and intelligence that makes him a capable leader of the Mafia. Most of the time, he is shown to be silent, intense, and has no conflicting or regrettable feelings for his actions. Vito is also able to read the intentions of others, is a smooth and subtle talker,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the beginning of the series, he had wanted to become a senator, or possibly the President of the United States. However, vengeance drives him to take part in his family's illegal actions that he once wanted to be separated from. While he is reluctant to take on such responsibilities, initially not feeling fully reconciled when he works for his father, he shows that he can be cold–blooded, ruthless, and determined for the job. Not only that, but he can think under pressure, is a decisive individual, and is able to command respect. Thus, Vito is able to let him take charge. Michael can represent two character archetypes: the child of an immigrant seeking the American dream and the fallen hero. The American dream has a variety of meanings to different people, but in this case, it would mean that Michael is working to achieve success much like his parents did. It is recognized that the cost of working towards success comes at a price, but this is where the fallen hero trope comes into play. When Michael decides to seek revenge, he works for the Mafia and believes he is a sacrificial hero to the family he's trying to raise, slaving away for their sake. He had good intentions; he only wanted to bring legitimacy to his family. Rather than the results being that they were safe and well off, this leads him to lose his wife and children, ... The era in which this story takes place must adhere to real to life actions of the characters in order for the reader to transform his or herself into this fictional world. Puzo's early novels, The Dark Arena and The Fortunate Pilgrim, exhibit the realistic narrative style typical of his later fiction and are considered minor classics of Italian–American literature. The Dark Arena talks about an American soldier who came back to a occupied Germany after the Second World War. Introducing the theme of violent retribution, Puzo's protagonist kills a black market drug supplier to show his rage at government , corruption in postwar Europe, and his own failure to secure lifesaving medication for his German girlfriend. In The Fortunate Pilgrim, Puzo takes us to Hell's kitchen and talks about the experiences of an Italian woman who struggles to surmount poverty and crime. Though extolling her courage, cunning, and traditional values Puzo's description of petty criminal activity in the poor Italian–American neighbourhood offers ironic justification for the life of crime as an alternate means of achieving the American Dream. The themes that are central to Mario Puzos Godfather are criminal legitimacy and revenge, in which Puzo chronicles the ascent of the Corleone Mafia family under the leadership of Don Vito Corleone, a criminal mastermind, and his sons. Drawing parallels to American corporate structure, Don Vito's benevolent authority is founded on supreme organizational control, calculated judgment, and swift retaliation against all enemies of the family, including traitors and the incompetent within the clan as well as members of opposing factions. In The Godfather Puzo begins to explore the dubious status of organized crime as a self–sufficient social entity governed by its own hallowed customs and rigid codes of behavior, particularly personal honour and loyalty. • 19. Scarface Movie Themes The film Scarface directed by Howard Hanks displays the rise and fall of gangster Tony Camonte. One of the main themes I picked up on in the film was the incestuous interest between Tony and his sister Cesca. To me, Tony is very protective of his sister comparable to a jealous boyfriend. At one point he catches his sister kissing another man and scares him off. Cesca and Tony then proceed to get into an argument where he aggressively rips off a piece of her clothing. Another incident that occurred between the two was when Tony returned home after a month of being away to find his partner Guino living with Cesca. Tony then proceeds to shoot Guino and kills him in front of Cesca who claimed to have loved him. Lastly at the end of the movie where Cesca is about to shoot Tony but instead refuses only to run into his arms. Later a police bullet hits Cesca in the chest resulting in her death and one of the last things Tony says to her is "without you I am completely alone". Why I thought this played a big impact in the movie was because to me it seemed as if Tony was searching for some sort of love from his sister. I believe this is why Tony felt no remorse for all the people he murdered, he felt empty and alone which is what he says to Cesca in her final moments.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This does not end up well do to the director's non–attractiveness to John Fontane. It represented his unwillingness to settle for anything less then he believed and the unpleasant truth of dealing with a criminal organization. The significance of killing Jack Woltz's most prized possession horse, resembles that the Godfather does not care who you are or how close you may be. With Jack waking up in a pool of blood from his dead horse that was placed in the bed, illustrates to the audience his poor decision. The use of editing within the scene played an important role, with slowly giving the audience a view of what happening to Jack Waltz. The genre is like a glossary for movies. All films fall under at least one genre and most can be more narrowly categorized into sub genres. (Goodykoontz &Jacobs, 2014, table 4.1). Moreover, one of the more iconic and popular genres would have to be the gangster film genre. However, there are many other genres, but the gangster film just does not have as many sub–genres. That is why my paper will focus on the "The Godfather" movie of the gangster genre in which is characterized by organized crime. The Drama and Gangster Drama can exhibit or display real life situations with realistic characters, settings that support the stories. The Gangster Drama genres characteristics include "Films that deal with organized crime, often mob families" (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014). The gangster movies that we all know and have seen took place in the 1930's–1980's, during the great depression. Therefore, I will help the audience breakdown the empathy for the criminal protagonist and characteristics of gangster films where they often emphasize the main character's rise of power to an unbelievable fall. Furthermore, I have chosen the gangster genre because they always favor the bad guy and this makes the film The Godfather so legendary and stands strong in this genre. Due to his social and political capital, Corleone has a great deal of influence over his family and associates, as well as politicians and law enforcement in New York, which can be considered one of his most important assets (ibid). The negotiation being analyzed is Corleone's meeting with the Virgil "The Turk" Sollozzo, a New York drug trafficker who is backed by a rivalcrime family, the Tattaglia's. Sollozzo's overall goal is to negotiate an investment and legal protection for his drug trafficking by offering Corleone a fixed percentage of the profits (ibid). Corleone has a vested interest in 'staying ahead' and maintaining his status and power among the rival crime families; however, he realizes that his involvement in drug trafficking may jeopardize his political ties (ibid). The negation is interesting because it is fueled by implicit meaning, involving the precarious balance of power and trust between each party involved that influences the strength of their position in the argument and the concessions they are willing to make. The movie was based on the book The Return of Superfly by Mark Jacobson. Some of the principle actors in the movie were: Russell Crowe as Detective Richard "Richie" Roberts, Denzel Washington as Frank Lucas, and Cuba Gooding Jr. as Leroy Nicholas "Nicky" Barnes. The film is well–known as a mobster film because it based on the true story of Frank Lucas and the drug rings in Harlem. In the film, both the local level individuals (growers or producers of cocaine) and the higher (syndicate) individuals were portrayed. These two groups were in the trade for one reason: money. The lower level producers were primarily based out of countries with extreme poverty; the cocaine business brought in a huge influx of income for the workers. This provided incentive to continue, though the work was hard. The higher–level syndicate individuals received a massive profit off the product sales. It allowed them to live comfortable lives and pay off other high ranking individuals for protection. However, there is another reason why these higher–level individuals are in the business. In American Gangster, Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) commandeered the market on cocaine with his product Blue Magic. Similarly, The Exorcist chilled the bones of audiences everywhere by shocking the world with grueling demonic possession in a tangible way that had never been presented before by cinema. The scenes in The Exorcist were particularly memorable because the scenes resonated with a large majority of American audiences who came from religious backgrounds where demonic possession is a sincere possibility; never before had a film brought Americans face–to–face with The Devil, Hell, and sin by means of horror. Horror was also a key element in Jonathan Demme's 1991 classic The Silence of the Lambs. Horror made each scene very memorable, particularly when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Vito Corleone: The Godfather Vito Corleone, the "godfather" of the family is a very diverse character. He is intelligent, clever and an excellent speaker. Like the tagline of the movie, he frequently makes an "offer he can't refuse". Another trait is his ability to read people, especially during Bonasera's plea to the don. He is also a ruthless person, if he cannot deal with words, guns and bullets will. Even with his supposed evil, he is seen as many as a very loving father and many people love him. He was clearly hurt when he found out Michael gunned down Sollozo and McClusckey, indicating he loved Michael that he didn't want his son to be part of any crime. He is able to separate blood and water, and embrace them both, evident when he adopted and raised Tom Hagen like he was a son. He also show a deep sense of morality, not agreeing to the dawning drug business at first, and when he did agree, he proposed that it should never be sold to kids and near schools. Near the end of his life, he became more relaxed and was able to enjoy his remaining day.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He favors a more direct confrontation than a more diplomatic route. He often acts before thinking, demonstrated when he beat Carlo on the street for abusing his sister. He is also a man of passion and appetite, cheating on his wife. In the end, his recklessness got the better of him when he was ambushed in a toll booth. Tom Hagen is the opposite of Sonny. He is meek and outspoken on his words, mostly because he is the family lawyer. Being the family councillor, he is very diplomatic when dealing with the other families, which Sonny disliked at first. His cautious nature makes him an excellent adviser but most of his peers belittle him during wartime. B. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Use Of Light In The Film Citizen Kane INTRODUCTION In films a big concept has always been the use of lights. The use of lights in films helps create a meaning about what the scene is about and at times reveals a little more. In cinematography there is different types of lighting such as: three point lighting, fill light, key light, high key and low key lighting, top or under, lighting and many more. In the times when films were black and white the use of light is not easily visible. The use of black and white still helped portray the meaning behind many of the scenes, whether the scene got lighter or darker.A film that was successful in using white and black was Citizen Kane by Orson Welles. A film that was in color was the Godfather directed byFrancis Ford Coppola. The use of lighting reflects within color because it gives the audience more to look at and it becomes very noticeable when the light changes for a specific scene. The use of lighting styles is necessary in films to bring attention to the scene and to be able to produce an interesting film. The director of Citizen Kane had the choice of making the film black and white or color but eventually decided to create it in black and white. In an interview about the film Citizen Kane a critic acknowledged the use of light and said "Exploiting light and shadow inventively to express meaning and establish a desired atmosphere made Orson Welles' 'Citizen Kane' a significant historical event that impacted both audiences and film genre in many ways." • 37. An Analysis Of Brando's Life Growing up as a child Brando's life was built upon lies and stories. He was told by his mother that he was Native American, and his father was an American Indian political activist and his mother was pure Indian as well. None of this were true and it took him some time to realize that. The real truth was Brando was a Mexican American and his father abandoned him and his mother at a young age. Growing up Brando had to face many challenges such his family and the place he grew up. Young Brando had new fathers almost every three years, which was very hard for him. Every time he tries so hard to love one they would always break his heart. He even mentions it in the book "my biological father Candido Ulloa, was replaced by a chain of boyfriends and five fathers––– one new dad about every three years" (Skyhorse 1). One time his mother told him that they were going to go on a trip to see his father who's is in jail but later he found out that was a lie too. Brando and his mother were really close at one point in their life, as they would travel together and do many other things. He always thought of his mother as a role model. There was a point in his life when he was 10 years old he started working with his mom as a phone sex operator "how had I, at ten–year–old, become my mother's pimp? She leapt from what she called "straight... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 38. Film Contributions of the Sixties Essay Film Contributions of the Sixties Beginning roughly with the release of Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Stopped Worrying and Loved the Bomb in 1964, and continuing for about the next decade, the "Sixties" era of filmmaking made many lasting impressions on the motion picture industry. Although editing and pacing styles varied greatly from Martin Scorcesse's hyperactivepace, to Kubrick's slow methodical pace, there were many uniform contributions made by some of the era's seminal directors. In particular, the "Sixties" saw the return of the auteur, as people like Francis Ford Coppola and Stanley Kubrick wrote and directed their own screenplays, while Woody Allen wrote, directed and starred in his own films. Kubrick, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These sequences are a result of a film, which for most of its run time does not presented the subjective vision of any one character. In stylistic and visual terms, there is a movement from the three–dimensional style of the film's first half to the flatter, more abstract visual style of the Star–Gate sequence. The film's movement towards abstraction can be understood both in visual and narrative terms (Falsetto, 115). 2001's presentation of details from the "Dawn of Man" sequence, to later space travel scenes are shot with complete conviction and impeccable detail. The viewer believes that the world might have actually looked like what Kubrick presented it as, several million years ago, and the depiction of space travel is just as convincing. The use of models, front projection, the slow editing techniques and camera work all help to create a more complete illusion (Falsetto, 141). If 2001 was presented almost completely objectively, than Kubrick's next film, A Clockwork Orange (1972) was presented almost completely subjectively. This may have been in part due to the constraints of the original novel by William Burgess, but nonetheless the film is told from the point of view of its central character, Alex. When Alex is not speaking on camera, he can often be heard as a voiced over ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Chapter 7 Of The Movie: The Godfather There is a case to be stated that the first two Godfathers films form the "Great American Movie" of the twentieth century. Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather is among one of the best films ever produced. In this short essay I will be concentrating on the Godfather part one and its relationship with Chapter 7 of the book. This film was released in 1972 and was consistently ranked as one of the top three films by the American film institute. In the Godfather, one of the main characters Michael Corleone had different personality, behaviors and thoughts about his family business, however this behaviors began to change at the end. At first, he believes that what his family is doing is wrong and he doesn't want to be part of that business. The Corleone family was a Sicilian mafia that settled in the United States. Knowing this, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As it is stated on the book, personal predisposition, which is a tendency to suffer from a particular condition or attitude, will make up one's personality. It also says that people differ in attitudes toward getting involved in new experiences. This is a good example of Michael Corleone in the film because at first he was afraid of being a part of his family business or in other words in new "experiences." This chapter also talks about behaviors in relationships, in this case we can say that Michael behaviors or relationships towards his family was lacking because he didn't wanted to support his family until the very last moment when his family was really being threatened by enemies. We can also compare the book supportive communication with romantic partners with this film because at the end Michael had to lie to his romantic partner because in some way he wanted to protect her. But the book mentioned that effective communication is essential for every relationship to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Dichotomy In The Godfather The crime organization that originated in Italy continues to exert its dominance over mainstream media. The organization's ability to consume individuals entirely and create its own lifestyle coincides with the attribute of human nature that calls for a sense of belonging. This lifestyle has been depicted in several different forms of media, such as literature and film, for several years. In the film, The Godfather (1974), Francis Ford Coppola introduces the dichotomy of Don Vito Corleone, the sadistic, cruel mob leader, yet protective, compassionate father and husband. The ideals of family values and tradition are so neatly interwoven into this obscene lifestyle that it is nearly impossible to disassociate the two. Therefore, Don Corleone, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is the loving father who will support his children under any and all circumstances, the father who defends the honor of those he loves. This directly clashes with his role in the crime family as the boss. In his essay, "The Thematic Paradigm," Robert B. Ray argues that "such two sided characters seemed particularly designed to appeal to a collective American imagination steeped in myths of inclusiveness" in order to captivate a more complex society (Ray 377). The complication of taking on the roles of father and mob boss begin with the form of business mob families conduct. Involvement in several forms of illegal activity such as gambling, prostitution, and drug trafficking began to evolve into the social norm for the mafia. In the film, Don Corleone and those in his mob family are not opposed to participating in high scale gambling and racketeering but refuse to participate in the drug trade due to it being a "dirty business". Don Corleone expresses his disinterest with the trade because of its moral implications and the destruction of the lives of others. It is rather ironic that the Don and his mafia are so willing to stain their hands with the blood of other men yet refuse to take on another form of income for their ...
