Ballard along with many other new wave science fiction writers believed that science fiction should
be taken seriously as a form of literature. In order to fulfill this belief the new wave science fiction
writers began experimenting with language and their style of writing, creating "cognitive
estrangement", indicating a kind of alienation or de–familiarization effect that they used to separate
postmodern/new wave science fiction from traditional/pulp science fiction. Ballard, amongst many
others, is considered one of the forefathers that helped develop the New wave movement to what we
know of it today. Ballard was born in Shanghai in 1930, where he spent the first fifteen years of his
profound life. At the age of sixteen, Ballard interned at a Japanese camp during World War II and,
was deported to England. He attended Cambridge University and obtained his degree in medicine,
and a few years later he sold his first story to New Worlds, a renowned science fiction magazine, in
1956. He is the author of numerous novels and short story collections, including Crash, Empire of

Art is another form of language, that artists use to explain something or express their feelings. I
believe that through art, communication is more passionate and thoughtful. In paintings, artist have
their own techniques in which they use to convey the messages in their work. The piece "In the
Studio" c by William Merritt Chase 1889–1916, he connects with his viewers through expression of
lines, space and depth, light and color, texture and design. This painting was also donated by Mary
Reynolds Babcock Foundation, ARCA Forsyth 1967 2.4.
Viewing the painting, I found that William uses a variety of lines. I found a good amount of thick
and thin contoured line in the body and the clothing of the woman sitting in the chair. Contoured
lines help to add volume and to mold into something. The pure contour lines in the woman chest
helps her character appear more feminine, as well as the curvy and thin lines in her dress and shoes.
The curved outline in her body gives a visual gesture and communicates body language. We all
know that body language is a nonverbal form of communication, it can say a lot, and cause different
reactions. The artist incorporated implied line in the figures painted on the dresser. The Buddha
statue appears to be looking down at the women, and the man looking statue appears to be looking
