3D printing has been used in different aspects of every field but mostly its application has been
limited to making prototypes. 3D printing versus Traditional Manufacturing techniques in almost
every field is still very debatable. One such area which I would like to explore in terms of
functionality and cost effectiveness would be the Construction Industry.
The last time a global survey for homelessness was attempted – by the United Nations in 2005 – an
estimated 100 million people were homeless worldwide. As many as 1.6 billion people lacked
adequate housing [1]. In the United States, on a single night in January 2015, 564,708 people were
experiencing homelessness – meaning they were sleeping outside or in an emergency shelter or
transitional housing program [2]. In 2013, the Slum population in India went up from 52 million to
65 million and it has been predicted to rise to 104 million [3]. Looking at the statistics, the main
cause for homelessness could be contributed to cost of affordable housing. Another example that
could be considered could be of people living in disaster prone areas where people lose their houses
overnight. In such scenarios, 3D printing could be a viable solution where houses could be printed in
a couple of days as compared to traditional construction methods where people need to seek out

Throughout history we can see that housing has followed certain trends. These trends are most

postmodern/new wave science fiction from traditional/pulp science fiction. Ballard, amongst many
others, is considered one of the forefathers that helped develop the New wave movement to what we
know of it today. Ballard was born in Shanghai in 1930, where he spent the first fifteen years of his
profound life. At the age of sixteen, Ballard interned at a Japanese camp during World War II and,
was deported to England. He attended Cambridge University and obtained his degree in medicine,
and a few years later he sold his first story to New Worlds, a renowned science fiction magazine, in

Architecture is considered to be the design and creation of buildings that reflects their culture,
religion, environment and technology used in its time period. The mastermind behind any type of
architecture is the architect itself. Two well–known and respected architects in modern history are
Frank Lloyd Wright and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Both known for their amazing architectural
thoughts, and the inspirations that affected many other architects. Both, Wright and Rohe, created
new schools of design for their abilities which brought about techniques that are still used today.
These architects were both involved in exploring the relationships of spatial distribution, form and
function, materials used, reflecting their current time through their design, and creating buildings
and houses that were both artistically beautiful as well as beneficial. Both of these architects have
many common attributes to each other's designs as well as ideas, but also the many differences that

Kurt Schwitters was a part of the revolutionary movement known as the Dadaism movement. The
movement and Kurt are significant to the history of graphic art. The movement took part during the

Art is another form of language, that artists use to explain something or express their feelings. I
believe that through art, communication is more passionate and thoughtful. In paintings, artist have
their own techniques in which they use to convey the messages in their work. The piece "In the
Studio" c by William Merritt Chase 1889–1916, he connects with his viewers through expression of
lines, space and depth, light and color, texture and design. This painting was also donated by Mary
Reynolds Babcock Foundation, ARCA Forsyth 1967 2.4.
Viewing the painting, I found that William uses a variety of lines. I found a good amount of thick
and thin contoured line in the body and the clothing of the woman sitting in the chair. Contoured
lines help to add volume and to mold into something. The pure contour lines in the woman chest
helps her character appear more feminine, as well as the curvy and thin lines in her dress and shoes.
The curved outline in her body gives a visual gesture and communicates body language. We all
know that body language is a nonverbal form of communication, it can say a lot, and cause different
reactions. The artist incorporated implied line in the figures painted on the dresser. The Buddha
statue appears to be looking down at the women, and the man looking statue appears to be looking
