Being Prey Short Story
Stay on the path! From, altering the future, to getting attacked by a crocodile, staying on the path is
crucial. In "Being Prey" and "A Sound of Thunder" the protagonists, the setting, and the theme all
changed the outcome of the story. I will compare and contrast all of these literary elements to prove
why you should stay on the path.
The settings of both stories were very dangerous. "The Sound of Thunder" is in a prehistoric time
with dinosaurs, "That – Mr. Travis pointed – is the jungle of sixty million, two thousand, fifty five
years before President Keith". "Being Prey" is in a present day marsh that is abundant with
crocodiles, "There are the crocodiles, lots of them along the river." "The Sound of Thunder" was
untouched by humans while "Being Prey" was a little bit touched or altered by humans. Both stories
were different and similar but dangerous at the same time. The protagonists of both stories had a
trait that ultimately got them in grave trouble. In both stories there was a path that for some reason
or another the protagonist wanders off of. "Eckels not looking back, walked blindly to the edge of
the path, his gun limp in his arms, stepped off the path," Eckels was petrified and ended up getting

"The Sound of Thunder" developed its theme of, Your Actions Have Consequences by Eckels
regretting his trip to hunt a dinosaur, stepping off the path and "Embedded in the mud, glistening
green and gold and black, was a butterfly, very beautiful, and very dead," his stepping off the path
and killing a butterfly altered the future in many unseen ways. "Being Prey" developed the same
theme, but by a curious woman named Plumwood that wandered off the path. "As the current
moved me towards it, the stick developed eyes!" this led to the struggle for survival between
Plumwood and the crocodile. Even though the stories had the same theme, it was developed a bit

Speech On Birds In Peril
Birds in Peril
Eleven species of animals have gone extinct over the past two centuries. To many people, this
statement would not shock them. They will just see it as a statistic. Many others though; would want
to do something to stop this from happening. Problems include natural disasters, homes being taken
away or destroyed, hunted for their feathers or the fur that they provide; There are many factors as
to why these animals disappear but people are the number one cause as to why animals decline so
rapidly in numbers.
Many people know there are people who don't give a rip about animals, and there are some that are
in–between, and others that absolutely love animals. The problem here are the people that do not
like animals at all. Trees are cut down, pollution thrown wherever, and not even once do they think
about the animals that occupy these essentials. They do not think about the river that the animals
need to drink out of. They do not think of the birds that live in the trees, or other animals that look to
them as a food source.
The thing is, these animals know when their habitat is not suitable to live in. "These birds called
raptors which means 'carry away' in Latin; know when their habitat isn't suitable, which then gives a
sign to other animals to find another place. These birds of prey are in constant threat of being killed,
whether it be by pollution, their homes being taken away or they are shot down in fear of them
killing the farm animals farm owners provide."

Tyto Alba's Diet Analysis
Discussion:
After 24 (1992–2016) years 2,176 pellets were analysed by the students at the County College of
Morris. Additionally, on average each pellet contained 2.6 prey equating to an average of 963 prey
discovered in owl pellets per year (Table 1). After the analysis of the pellets it was discovered that
the Tyto alba consumed a wide spectrum prey, primarily rodents. A total of six prey species were
discovered. The Microtus commonly known as voles were the most abundant prey in the Tyto alba's
diet. Three thousand six hundred and twenty three remains of the Microtus were identified in pellets
that were analysed with a relative abundance of 64.2%. Microtus is most abundant in temperate and
tropical regions, a common habitat for the Tyto ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, there were factors that had a negative impact on the study such as the misidentification of
prey. The remains of the consumed prey were small and very fragile which made them prone to
breakage. Additionally, before the pellets were transported to the County College of Morris for
analysis, they were stored and preserved in a lab at the Carolina Biological Supply Company. This
made it difficult to figure out if the prey composite was the Tyto alba's year round diet or if the
dominant species that were consumed depended on the season. In the future the time between when
the owl pellets are gathered to when they are analyzed should be reduce to give a more accurate data
about the Tyto alba's

From Prey to Predators
Cold is encircling you, and the deeper you go, the tighter it squeezes. There's enough light for you to
see a dark, looming shape weaving back and forth through the water, slowly heading toward you. It
aggressively opens its mouth, ready to gulp you down its starving stomach, and its teeth seem to
sparkle with hunger. But something else catches eye. Abruptly bolting past you, it swiftly devours a
fish twice its size. Welcome to the Pelagic zone. Large organisms roam this open space, and this is
perhaps why another name for it is the Open–ocean zone. Including numerous subzones, this
limitless territory has includes the subzones of the epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathypelagic, and
abyssopelagic. Despite being home to many large predators though, many species use it to spawn,
grow to maturity, feed, and breed. Slightly or majorly morphing in order to survive in your
surroundings, adapting, is required for this ever–changing environment, and phytoplankton, sunfish,
and flying fish have become adept at this skill.
A deceiving family name surrounds this organism, or animal. Even though it is called a fish, a glitter
just above the surface of the ocean's water might just be it. Admirably capable of swimming and
flying, flying fish are pure evidence of how nature has learned to adapt. One adaptation they possess
is an unequally split tail, for this gives them more control over movement. Flying Fish also have
another trait that allows them to get airborne, expanded pelvic fins.

Natural History Of Raptors : Raptor Biology And Hunting...
Natural History of Raptors
Raptor Biology and Hunting Methods
Adam M. House
Due: June 15, 2015
Dr. Yunger
The adaptability and evolutionary history of Raptors is remarkable and a learning opportunity for
humans.
Some raptors are acrobats and blur through dangerous tree lines and brush to catch prey with its
agility and speed. Others take a less energy consuming route by soaring high above plains and
grasslands and only take advance towards prey with large talons and its eyesight that is to be
marveled at. A few take an even more conservative approach by feeding on the already deceased
and rotting flesh of almost any carrion. There is also a species of raptor that uses its ability to see at
night as if everything is illuminated and sits or stalks its prey through the night. Raptors have
evolved different methods of survival but all species are related in many ways as well.
Living life every day risking life and limb is something that some raptors have chosen due to their
innate ability to out–match its prey with extreme speed and ultimate agility. These raptors mainly
belong to the family of buteo or hawks; such as the sharp–shinned hawk, Swainson's hawk, and
Cooper's Hawk. They are small, long–tailed hawks with short, rounded wings. "They have small
heads that in flight do not always project beyond the "wrists" of the wings" (allaboutbirds.org).
Most of these species migrate south out of Canada and remain in North America for most of the
year,

Predator Prey Paper
The role of predation is critical in shaping ecosystem structure and function (Berger et al., 2001;
Hawlena and Schmitz, 2010). Predator–prey interactions can alter community composition (Kneite
and Chase, 2004), mediate trophic cascades (Mooney et al., 2010), increase biodiversity (Letnic and
Ritchie, 2012), and affect species invasions (Snyder et al. 2004). Furthermore, predators can control
the dynamics of prey populations by influencing such aspects as survival, growth, behavior, size
structure, and distribution (Beauchamp et al., 2007) while prey can likewise regulate predator
populations (Yoshida et al., 2003; Ishii and Shimada, 2010). One of the primary components of
predator–prey interactions is the behavior and subsequent survival of prey in the presence of
predators which we focus on in this study. For decades scientists have studied the behavioral
response of prey to predators. Numerous studies have directly linked prey activity levels (e.g.
Skelly, 1994; McIntyre et al. 2012) and refuge use (e.g. Cowlishaw, 1997; Belgrad and Smith, 2014)
to predation risk, while other investigations have determined that predator avoidance behaviors (e.g.
migration, reduced foraging) can limit prey growth (Werner et al., 1983), development (Skelly and
Werner, 1990), and fecundity (Peckarsky et al., 1993). These behavioral changes also have an

Prey Summary By Michael Crichton
"Prey summary" The book "Prey", is a novel written by Michael Crichton. This novel explains the
wonders and potential hazards of nanotechnology. The plague had formed from a cloud of
nanoparticles or microrobots, that had escaped from a laboratory. This started off as a so–called
"harmless" cloud that is self–sustaining and self–reproducing, which means it can be extremely
powerful. This cloud is intelligent and will evolve from things and become more and more deadly
with every passing hour. It has become so powerful that every attempt after attempt has failed when
trying to destroy this plague. This cloud has even now turned itself into large swarms that will get
the prey it feeds off of to get bigger and less destructible. As this ... Show more content on

the cameras being able to form a swarm. Little did Jack know was that these small cameras can 't

Prey By Michael Crichton Summary
For my book report, I decided to choose the book, "Prey", by Michael Crichton. This selection
teaches many scientific facts in a story like form. The story "Prey", is based in the Nevada desert
when suddenly an experiment goes terribly wrong. Scientist had created nanoparticles, micro–
robots, to help people, but instead of these robots helping people, they kill all living objects. To
make matters even worse, all of the micro–robots have escaped and humans are its prey. Scientist
have tried multiple times to destroy them, but every procedure has been unsuccessful. With each
passing hour, the nanoparticles become more and more deadly. In this selection, the main character,
Jack, is married to a scientist, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the very beginning of his novel, he talks about how many of us today are not fully grasping the
world's implications. He believes people are not noticing what is truly going on around them today
in nature. Crichton wants us to capture the real meaning of evolution in this story. He wants us to
envision a world where every living plant, insect, and animal species is changing at every instant.
The author wants us to know that whole populations of organisms are rising and falling, shifting and
changing every second of the day. This is called biosphere. Biosphere means that we do not know
the advance consequences of anything that we do. This is because us people either do not know
enough or that the ever–changing world responses to our actions in many different ways. Biosphere
responds unpredictably to our actions. The author is saying that we are unaware of what is going on
around us. For example, in the story people were clueless that the robots had escaped and people did
not know how to destroy these dangerous machines. This is just one of the scientific ways the author
is trying to tell us through the

Predator – Prey Relationships
The relationship between predators and their prey is an intricate and complicated relationship;
covering a great area of scientific knowledge. This paper will examine the different relationships
between predator and prey; focusing on the symbiotic relations between organisms, the wide range
of defense mechanisms that are utilized by various examples of prey, and the influence between
predators and prey concerning evolution and population structure. Symbiosis is the interaction
between organisms forming a long term relationship with each other. Many organisms become
dependent on others and they need one another or one needs the other to survive. Symbiotic
interactions include forms of parasitism, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Parasites are what is called host specific, this means that their anatomy, metabolism, and life–style is
adapted to that of their host(1973). Some parasites react to the behavior of their hosts, an interaction
called social parasitism(1989). More simply put a parasite might take advantage of the tendencies of
a particular species for the benefit of it's own. An example of this is the European Cuckoo. In this
case the grown cuckoo destroys one of the host birds eggs and replaces it with one of it's
own(1991). The host bird then raises the cuckoo nestling even when the cuckoo is almost too large
for the nest and much bigger than the host bird(1991). This is a case where the parasite uses the host
to perform a function and making life and reproduction easier on itself. Parasite and host
relationships hold an important part of homeostasis in nature.(1975). Parasitism is an intricate
component in the regulation of population of different species in nature. Mutualism is another topic
at hand in discussing predator–prey relationships. Mutualism is a symbiotic relationship in which
both members of the association benefit(1989). Mutualistic interaction is essential to the survival or
reproduction of both participants involved(1989). The best way to describe the relationships of
mutualism is through examples. We will give examples of mutualism from different environments.

Owl Pellet Lab Report
Lab Report: Owl Pellet
Kirsten de Jong
September 19, 2015
1. An owl pellet is made up of portions of things which an owl can't digest. The pellet can contain
things like feathers, bones, fur, and teeth, these things have very little nutritional value to the owl.
These things are tightly formed together in the owl's stomach, which is then spit out by the owl
every 12 hours producing two every day.
2. Owl pellets are home and food for many different fungi and insects. Fumigation is the removal of
any small insects, germs, or other pests from a room or other area, with the use of gases or smoke. It
is necessary for the pellet to be fumigated so there is nothing growing inside of the pellet that wasn't
there when the owl had spit it out. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There would be major changes if the barn owl wasn't part of the food web. There would be many
more rodents and other pests in agricultural and forestry land, which would eventually become
overpopulated. God created a perfect world and if there was even one animal that wasn't part of an
ecosystem, there would be many species with overpopulation issues.
8. Bioconcentration is when tiny creatures capture chemicals from debris, which is a large source of
diseases, and water which are then devoured by large populations of zooplankton. Larger organisms
like my sides then eat the zooplankton, fish feed on the mysids, this continues until the herring
which is at the top of this food web. This can causes many diseases to spread over a period of time
from one creature to the next and possibly worsen. Bioaccumulation is when the matter of an
organism increases in concentration.
9. Owls can be seen as the most threatened of an ecosystem which is threatened by pesticides
because it is the highest trophic level in the food web. The higher the trophic level, the higher the
concentration of toxins in the species. There may be a tiny bit of pesticide in a plant which is then
eaten by a insect which is then eaten by a shrew. The shrew then gets more toxins, then giving the
owl which is at the top of the food web the most toxins causing it to become sick and die. Overall,
these pesticides in ecosystems can disturb food webs, ecosystems, and hurt

They also have a lot of powerful words like, "Don't be the prey. Run like the prey." This part of the
ad practices the use of assonance by repeating that "o" sound which creates a persuasive tone of
voice. Assonance is used here to emphasize the intensity of the situation and it does a very good job
doing it. Also in the same ad we use Synesthesia by using a colorful outdoor theme in the
background. The use of synesthesia is very persuasive here because it makes the viewer experience
other senses than vision. It makes the viewer feel like they are the animal in the ad which is a very
good technique to use in this situation because it puts the viewer in "the preys" shoes. One thing that
the Shoes of Prey ad lacks is the amount of text provided in the written ad. This really affects the
amount of customers that we acquire. The amount of text is what really can draw people in but
without enough information/explanation, it is hard for people to really understand why they should
buy the product. Another flaw to the ads were the lack of comparisons. Implementing more forms of
comparison (simile or metaphor) would have been very useful in our case. We could have used

Commentary "An Apology to my Prey" by Joyce Sidman. The purpose of this poem is to help us
understand what people mean when they talk. Body Paragraphs The Author uses sarcastic language
to help us understand what the poem means. For example: when he said "Let me offer an apology,
too, for my talons impossibly long and curved..." why would you show off while you apologise, you
should feel regretful. In addition to that: when he said," I am sorry. For you, that is. All this works
out quite well for me". You would not be biased when you apologise, only when you are sarcastic. It
is a good way to use expressive language and attract the reader. The author, in this poem, uses
figurative language to grab a reader's interest and curiosity:

Analysis Of The Film Prey
I believe the film Prey should be allowed to be broadcasted on television. The movie is about a
small family, who travels to Africa so the father can continue his career as a hydro–electrical
engineer and build a dam. Ultimately, the father's two children are forced to go on a safari with only
their stepmother. Tensions are high between the teenage daughter and her stepmother, due to the
father's divorce from her biological mother. During this safari, the ranger decides to take the family

Both the ranger, native hunter, and the big game hunter are mauled visibly. As this terror happens,
very fake blood squirts all over the screen, but there isn't any gruesome body pictures shown until
scavengers have made the human unrecognizable. The camera often cuts away from the attack,
before any horrific images cover the screen. It gives the audience the message of a traumatizing
attack, without showing how bad it really is. The context of the movie is about survival, not murder.
It depicts how dangerous nature can be, especially in a place like Africa. Until there is accurate
research regarding "violent" program's effects on people, I don't believe something shouldn't be
broadcasted unless it is immensely inappropriate or inhumane. Our textbook, even explains that
violent behavior blamed on the media, can often be tied to other variables and not just a specific
program on television or radio. Overall, Prey isn't any more outrageous or controversial than any
other type of movie broadcasted. It has violence, but a majority of mature movies do these days. It
wouldn't be fair for me to deny this movie, when the message it portrays is realistic and not shoved
down the audience's

Analysis Of H Is For Hawk, By Helen Macdonald
In Helen Macdonald's memoir, H is for Hawk, she explores her journey of grief and recovery
following the death of her father and how a goshawk and the wildness it embodies allows her to
rediscover herself and restore her own humanity. In the very first chapter Macdonald takes time to
assert her opinion of the sanctity and power of the wild, a world separate from and yet connected to
our own, very much like the land of Faery from Gaelic and later English mythologies. To
Macdonald the wild is a place and a presence that is both alien and familiar. Macdonald hunts down
these places that to her seem to be more deeply connected to that force, wildness within and beyond
all things. Macdonald relishes in these places' beauty, as her father had taught ... Show more content

Macdonald experiences a near prophetic realization that she requires a goshawk and by intense
impulse she purchases a goshawk from a man in Scotland over the internet, having immediately
become enthralled by the grace and beauty of the bird the man puts on display, and spends all her
time training it, and finally reveling in the sight of the hawk in flight, losing herself in the righteous
fury of a predator at work. She thinks of herself less and less as a part of humanity, stating a feeling
of disconnect and alienness with other people and society at large being much more comfortable
hunting with her hawk. Macdonald begins to associate more closely with the hawk than with people,
believing herself to be turning into a hawk at some personal level, "Hunting with the hawk took me
to the very edge of being human. Then it took me past that place to somewhere I wasn't human at
all," (195). Macdonald fancies herself a changeling born of another world, the world of man being
nothing but a place of discomfort and pain, she sees her only chance at a reprieve to return to a place
of swaying trees and impenetrable fog where goshawks rule the sky, where wildness dwells and
reigns supreme. In this sense Macdonald's hobby is far more than just a hobby to her, she at some
level believes that this distance between her and other people, and her obsession with Mabel is all a
part of her healing process, of some unspoken, unknowable ritual in which the wild will encapsulate
all that she is and remove her from pain and

Climate change is the increase in temperature of the Earth and its atmosphere. This has a huge effect
on the world including Canadian ecosystem. Humans have added to this effect due to their
irresponsible use of fossil fuels and polluting the environment increasing the amount of green house
gases in the atmosphere. One of the results of climate change is ocean acidification, this occurs from
the ocean absorbing the carbon from the atmosphere reacting with the water and forming carbonic
acid. There are many different experiments done by multiple scientist exploring the effect that ocean
acidification has on the environment and the species that live in it, specifically the predatory prey

high temperature. Mussel growth rate was positively affected by low pH, however there was no
response to high temperatures. Predation of sea stars on muscles decreased in lower pH by 50%.
The overall effect shows that muscles perform better at the lower pH compared to the sea stars.
Another study was done by Ferrari, M. C. O et al. (2015) which studied the effect of stressors, CO2
levels and temperature, on the predatory prey encounters in reef communities. Their method was to
put 6 prey and one predator into 4 different treatments for 22 hours and record how many prey
survived this was repeated 2 times for each of the 4 treatments. What the results found was that
when both stressors were high, high CO2 and high temperature, the predation rate increased from
30% to 70%. Prey selection changed when it was either high CO2 or high temperature but when the
stressors were together the prey selection was equal. Risk taking behaviour was also seen to increase
during both stressors. A study was performed by Clements, J. C. et

Strategies And Characteristics Of The Crowned Eagle In Africa
Everyone probably had a thought of being a specific animal for a period of time, perhaps at that
moment, she didn't want to be a human being. So she thought, "A Crowned Eagle would be pretty
interesting." Not only does the name sound super cool and fascinating, but it is a large bird of prey,
in other words, it is the most powerful eagle. The Crowned Eagle won't have to have concerns about
getting eaten, and mostly food supply. Moreover, the Crowned Eagle could just enjoy life without
having to worry about most of the survival needs. Because the strategies and steps of how the eagle
hunts are fantastically amazing. It even has a partner to support on hunting the fast monkeys.
Besides the efficient hunting ability, it also has a strong build–up body. The Crowned eagle has
many firm body parts that will help it to survive, such as the body mass, the strong talons, and the
beak length. Additionally, the flying ability that the Crowned eagle is able to do is beyond
expectations. Being a Crowned Eagle is an interesting thought with combinations of strong hunting
skills, the powerful body structure, and the beauty of flying.
The Crowned eagle is the most powerful eagle in Africa, in other words, the Crowned eagle is
considered the Africa's strongest predator. It's even eliminating over two heavier eagles: the Martial

Eel Imobilize Prey
Electric eels are capable of generating powerful shocks that can immobilize prey. Discharges
emitted from volleys into the environment can cause prey in hiding to experience involuntary
muscle twitching causing it to be revealed to the eel. The revelation of hidden prey allows the eel to
continue its attack and go into predatory strike mode. This study (Catania, 2014) sets out to show
that the powerful shocks produced by eels activate motor neurons in their prey causing muscle
contractions in the prey to be temporarily halted and the eel to be able to control their target through

An eel was placed in a naturalistic experimental environment with other fish and the fishes' response
to high–voltage pulses was observed. If there was a strong enough discharge, the fish was unable to
move on its on accord and was captured by the eel. A pitched fish was placed behind an agar barrier,
which received the same discharge as the eel directed toward earthworms placed in the same
environment. In order to determine if the discharges induced the muscle movement by initiating
action potentials or by activating the motor neurons in the fish, two fishes were pitched; one of the
fish was injected with an AcH antagonist and the other was injected with a placebo. To test doublet

A sharp rise in fish tension occurred after the pitched fish received a strong pulse. When the eel was
separated from the fish by an agar barrier, the eel was still able to detect the fish movements and

neurons were activated to cause muscle movement. In response to the artificial movements of the

actual movement from the fish, so it could release the full strength

Prey By Michael Crichton Analysis
Imagine trying to kill an almost indestructible swarm of tiny, murderous robots. This is what Jack is
faced with in the novel Prey by Michael Crichton. Jack, the protagonist and narrator, was a software
programmer for a company called Media Tronics, until he discovered that his boss had been stealing
from and was cheating the company. His attorney told him that he should try to leave the company
immediately, but instead Jack went to a board member. The board member, also being in on the
indiscretion, got Jack fired for gross negligence. That led to Jack becoming a stay at home dad for
his three children, Nicole, Eric, and Amanda. Meanwhile, Jack's wife was the vice president for a
company named Xygos. His wife, Julia, started to become cold towards him and the children, and
he started to suspect that she was having an affair. An excited Julia came home later than she
promised one night, and she showed Jack a demo of some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Julia keeps trying to kiss and entice Jack, even once they discover a dead team member in a closet
with a swarm flying around him. Jack and Mae soon discover everyone in the plant has been
infected by the nanobot swarm except themselves. Instead of these nanobots showing predatory
behavior, they control their hosts, slowing eating at them and creating more nanobots. Jack and Mae
discover and drink a type of E–coli destroying phage, protecting them from infection. Jack then
takes the phage and puts it in the sprinklers, planning to drench the infected team. The team captures
Jack and throws him into a magnetic chamber, threatening to destroy him. Julia enters to interrogate
Jack, and, remembering Amanda's recovery, he activates the chamber which pulls the swarm out of
her body. Julia tells Jack she loves him and begs him to forgive her and to destroy the swarms. Jack

Both stories have dangerous conflict and have similar results. The stories have similar results but
different outcomes. Both are in a dangerous area. And it does not end well both characters are

Healthy Predator-Prey Relationships
Organisms within a predator–prey relationship are intertwined in a co–evolutionary battle for
survival. Each depends on food, shelter, the environment, and the random chance of evolution in
order to maintain balance in the relationship. If chance favors one side too heavily, it throws the
species into disequilibrium and can lead to the demise of one or more species. Because of the
potential severity of the consequences, it is important to investigate the contributing factors that help
maintain a healthy predator–prey dynamic. In order to reach solid conclusions, a well–rounded
research approach is required, lest one side of this is disproportionally represented. First, the
survival mechanisms of prey will be explored through the example of ... Show more content on

Preys have a more difficult role in the predator and prey dynamics as they have to expend energy in
foraging for themselves as well as high predation risks. This also adds to the disequilibrium in the
predator and prey relationship as prey's need more expenditure of energy for both foraging and
escaping. In a research study done by Luttbeg et al. (1999) looked at behavioral response to
predation risk in a predator and prey dynamic model. When the spiders are not around the
grasshoppers eat more and grow more. (Luttbeg et al., 1999 However, when predation risk was
present this tended to cause reduced feeding activity in order to increase vigilance and predator
awareness thus imposing a great life history cause (Luttbeg et al., 1999).). Therefore, predator prey
dynamics is highly affected and requires equilibrium in the way the prey chooses to balance its trade
offs of foraging and predatory risk. In order to maintain the equilibrium of the predator prey
dynamic the prey must find way to maximize food intake and minimize predator

Predator Prey Lab Report Essay
PREDATOR–PREY RELATIONS LAB Background Research: Predators and prey are organisms
that interrelate, and they can influence on another's success in reproduction. Predators are organisms
that consume other organisms–their prey. These two organisms evolve together. They live in an
environment where they must develop certain adaptations to survive. When an adaptation is
developed, it gives an organism certain physical characteristics that create an advantage for survival
and can come to dominate in a population. An adaptation aids survival by either decreasing a prey's
chance of being eaten, or by increasing a predator's chance of obtaining food to survive and
reproduce. Predators must fight for food. They face density–independent ... Show more content on

The predators may, however, dash in and pick up any prey being pursued by another predator. Do
not hesitate to intrude, any hungry natural predator would not. Hunting time will be 5 minutes.
When the teacher or the "wildfire" comes around and touches any of the students, they must step out
of the playing area for fifteen seconds. When told to stop, each student will tally up his "kills". If a
predator is in the process of capturing a prey when told to stop, he must drop it. 6. Repeat this
process for each generation and make the proper adjustments required for each. 7. At the end of the
lab, share your data with the class and add up the number of prey killed. Observations: In certain
parts of the field, the grass was very tall and the prey that were in that area were very difficult to
find. Because of this many predators ignored the grassy areas which caused a lot of competition for
prey in the other areas of the field. Certain prey such as the corn was easily concealed in the grass
because of its small size. However, in the dirt area, the color of the corn really made it stand out. In
the dirt area of the field, the pinto beans were concealed because its camouflage characteristics
allowed it blended in with the dirt, but it stuck out in the grass. The black beans were small black so
it was concealed it both the grass and the dirt. The lima

Comparison Of Predators And Prey
Predators and prey always had their way of living. The predator hunts the prey for food and they
need some way of sneaking up to them. They prey runs aways from the predator or hides from them
to escape being eaten. Predators use special techniques to hunt their prey like agility or sneak. For
example the cheetahs use their speed to catch their prey, or the snapping turtle which uses its pink
worm like tongue to lure fish in trying to eat it. Prey also have a similar strategy they use their
abilities such as speed to get away from the predator that is chasing them like the gazelle or like the
armadillo who uses the armor on his back to guard him from the predators. The predators have
unique set of skills put to each species of animals. The

Speech On Birds Of Peril
Birds of Peril
11 species of animals have gone extinct over the past two centuries. To many people, this statement
won't shock them. They will just see it as a statistic. Many others though; would want to do
something to stop this from happening. Natural disasters, their homes are taken, they are hunted,
there are many factors as to why these animals disappear, but people are the number one cause as to
why animals decline so rapidly in numbers.
I know there are people who don't give a rip about animals, and there are some that are in–between,
and others that absolutely love animals. The problem here is the people that do not like animals at
all. Trees are cut down, pollution thrown wherever, and not even once do they think about the
animals that occupy these essentials. They do not think about the river that the animals need to drink
out of. They do not think of the birds that live in the trees, or other animals that look to them as a
food source.
The thing is, these animals know when their habitat isn't suitable to live in. "These birds called
raptors which means 'carry away' in Latin; know when their habitat isn't suitable, which then gives a
sign to other animals to find another place. These birds of prey are in constant threat of being killed,
whether it be by pollution, their homes being taken away or they are shot down in fear of them
killing the farm animals farm owners provide." (animals.mom.me) Raptors are most commonly
killed for fear of the farmer's livestock.

We as people should not mess with any animal in their own territory. In the stories "A Sound of
Thunder" and "Being Prey", the main characters do not listen to this law of the jungle. In "A Sound

blooded killer. These stories are very different but, very similar in setting, theme, and conflict. The
setting of the stories "A Sound of Thunder" and "Being Prey" are very different. Eckels, from "A

Predator-Prey Relationships
Type here. Generally in nature there is only one type of relationship the predator and prey
relationship. Everyone knows that relationship but in some instances two of the same or different
species can work together for a mutual goal. However sometimes they can become the most
uncanny pair of friends the world has ever seen.
The first instance in which two of the same species would work together would be like in a wolf
pack when a mother has just had a litter of puppies. Some of the wolves will bring the mother food
to feed her young.while the pack does this the mother is teaching her little ones the hierarchy of the
pack and how to use their heightened senses to track prey and find other wolves. Once the pups are
old enough to start hunting and help bring in food the mother can also go back to helping. Once
mating season rolls around again the whole process starts again. ... Show more content on

In this relationship both species help one another to survive. The relationship starts with the hermit
crab walking along the ocean floor it is hiding from predators because it has no way to protect its
back. That is where the sea anemone comes into play. The sea anemone gets a free ride on the
hermit crabs back and stings any predators that come close. This type of relationship is called
mutualism it is when both species benefit.
In conclusion there are many types of relationships between species not just predator and prey.
These animals can work together to benefit one another. However some animals are not looking for

State Of Fear Critical Analysis
Michael Crichton's 2004 techno–thriller novel, State of Fear received many different opinions from
the audience. Although the novel was a page–turner, it disappointed many audiences for they didn't
expect that of an action–thriller novel. Some audiences believed he did not provide credible sources
for the Global Warming issue. Although the novel was fiction, Crichton provided ample amounts of
information based on his own research regarding very important issues such as Global Warming and
Climate Change. Crichton speaks about how these topics impact the world and the people living in
it. The novel takes the readers on a thrilling rollercoaster ride that is filled with suspense, innovative
technology, and outstanding research. State of Fear takes its readers from the streets of Paris to the
beaches of Los Angeles, from the glaciers of Iceland to the volcanoes of Antarctica, and from the
Arizona desert to the deadly jungles of the Solomon Islands. Michael Crichton presents a thought–
provoking novel that makes the readers think outside of their comfort zone. In the novel, Crichton
displays how information can be manipulated to people's wishes in the modern world.
State of Fear has eight main characters who are Peter Evans, Nick Drake, George Morton, Sarah
Jones, John Kenner, Sanjong Thapa, Jimmy Bolden, and Jennifer Haines. Peter Evans is a young
lawyer of George Morton who is a very wealthy philanthropist donating most of his money to the

Predator-Prey Interaction
Abstract Predators are animals that kill for their food; they must do this in order to survive. There
has been controversy about predation in some areas including the re–introduction of wolves into the
Yellowstone National park area and other areas. Predator–prey relationships are both beneficial and
detrimental to some species. The weakest and unhealthiest become dinner for those predators and
also become a positive thing for the species that only the strongest of the herd will survive and
continue to reproduce. Some types of prey have defense mechanisms which fight off predators.
Survival of the fittest is the best explained phrase for this type of ecological interaction.
Introduction Predator–prey relationships are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Predation and prey interactions keep the circle of life going.
Benefits of Predation When a predator makes a kill, it feeds not only them, but other species as well.
For example, if there is an elk kill, this will feed other predators like bear, mountain lion, coyotes,
eagles and others. Smaller rodents and other scavengers, like ravens will also benefit from a kill. We
are predators ourselves we have to kill to eat, just most of us don't do it ourselves, if we are meat–
eaters. What we don't eat can go to the dogs and feed them. Bacteria and other parasites can also
join in on the fun. Other things we don't eat, can go to compost, so there are many ways in which
predation benefits the food chain. It definitely feeds various links on the food web. Predation is also
used to control populations of certain problematic species, such as snails, which pass certain types
of diseases to other species including humans, as explained by Molles. They have used crayfish in
some places such as Kenya and other East African countries to control a problematic snail
population. (Molles, 343) This happens here at times also, with introducing species that will
eradicate problem species or invasive species that are taking over watersheds and other ecosystems.
Predator Body Systems Predators can be birds of prey or carnivores or anything that must kill for
their food. Predation is the interaction between the predator and the prey itself. All

The Predators And Prey Species
Abstract:
It is important to know information about the predators and prey species in an ecosystem. The focus
of predator management is to minimize predation using nonlethal and lethal methods. Carnivores
are vital for biological systems. Removing predators that eat the prey will cause a decline in the
plants biomass. Problems with predation can be heavily influences by humans. Impacts on predators
or prey can be from global warming, habitat loss, War, etc. Adult porcupines are one of the many
species that are affected by global warming. Any prey species that molts to white pelage early in the
winter due to global warming may expose themselves to predators easier because, if there is a heat
spell, white fur will not be effective camouflage with loss of the snow. Other contributors for the
decline of prey can be from drought which could dampen the amount of available resources or from
interspecific completion for a common resource. There are some ethic and non–ethic methods used
for managing predators. Both methods can be used but, are better at different scenarios. Using lethal
methods is controversial because it can conflict with public opinions, laws and regulations, animal
rights, etc. Predator management is costly depending on the action taken. Economic loss in
agricultural livestock from predators is one of the main conflicts that is dealt with to manage
predators.

Predator control has probably been used from ancient times ever since we began the

Angus, Bill. "'A Hawk from a Handsaw': A New Contextualization." Notes & Queries, vol. 56, no.
1, Mar. 2009, p. 60. EBSCOhost.
The author of the article discusses how Shakespeare is making a connection between the actors and
informers. The author suggests that this connection was not accidental because it is used to connect
debates between authority and corruption. It is focusing on Hamlet's first encounter with
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and the phrase "hawk from a handsaw" from the play. Imagery of
predatory birds is used to describe the informers. This article's audience would probably be people
who are familiar with the play. I found this article useful because it was a very detailed textual
criticism. It also provides evidence for the argument that "handsaw" is a corrupted form of the word
"heronshaw," or young heron. There are many explanations about how the use of birds of prey in
Shakespeare's play "Hamlet" expresses Hamlet's recklessness. The author pulls many different
interpretations into his argument from various scholars.

Thermosensation In Predator-Prey Interactions
Thermosensation plays a similar role in predator–prey interaction by the use of TRPA1 and TRPV1
ion channels. The vampire bat can sense infrared radiation by using a modified TRPV1 channel. In
other mammals, TRPV1 is used to detect noxious heat greater than 43ºC , vampire bats however,
have an activation threshold for this receptor that is around 30ºC. To further differentiate the
vampire bat's TRPV1 receptor from other mammals, it is not expressed in the dorsal root ganglia.
Instead it is located in their facial nerves located near the bat's upper lip and nose. Giving bats the
ability to find locations of their prey with the easiest access to blood. (Gracheva et al, 2011) To
combat this, prey have been shown to reduce the bats' feeding time

Predator-Prey Theory
Evolutionary Theory on Predators and Prey Evolutionary psychologists believe that the human mind
is a blank slate, that is, people retain what they learn from the information or knowledge they learn
from the environment or through some other external forces (Tooby & Cosmides, 2005). One
example of a learning which is attained through observation and in depth study of the environment
is the evolutionary theory on predators and prey. A predator is understood to be an organism which
naturally eats another organism (Yam, 2011). On the other hand, the prey is the organism which the
predator eats (Yam, 2011). The environment gives us the idea that the predator and prey both evolve
together. This means that the prey is considered to be a part of

Nietzsche's Birds Of Prey And The Lambs
Throughout history, the concept of morality and its values have been argued by notable philosophers
observing the society they lived within. With the concept of morality comes the idea of moral
behavior that we have adopted in today's age, such as: generosity, kindness, truthfulness, integrity,
loyalty, commitment, open–mindedness, and dependability. The controversial issue that come from
these so called "morals," is that these values have had an flip, opening the gate to two types of
morality systems that have had us wondering if our morality system has helped or ruined us.
Friedrich Nietzsche, a german philosopher, commonly associated with advocating Nihilism and the
phrase, "God is dead, God will remain dead, we have killed him,"(Nietzsche, ... Show more content

The Birds of Prey are natural predators, seeking out the wekaest prey to latch on to in order to gain
the energy for life, and the nobles, according to Nietzsche, are doing the exact same. He portrays
this idea with the statement, " to demand of strength that it not express itself as strength that is not
be a desire to overwhelm, a desire to cast down, a desire to become a lord, a thirst for enemies and
resistance and triumphs, is just as nonsensical as to demand of weakness that it express itself as
strength," (Nietzsche, 13) meaning that all the actions that the Birds of Prey have commited are
being undertaken because it would be unjust for them to deny who they truly are. He is portraying
that if a group is powerful, they will strive to stay on top and therefore, all their actions will be
justified with the idea that it is in our very nature to act in our own self interest, and those who
oppose are only furthering themselves from the actual truth of morality. Because of this, the lambs
and the little lambs who consider themselves to be "patient, humble, and righteous," are in the
wrong according to Nietzsche when they claim that, "good is everyone who does not do violence..,

Being Prey Short Story

  • 1. Being Prey Short Story Stay on the path! From, altering the future, to getting attacked by a crocodile, staying on the path is crucial. In "Being Prey" and "A Sound of Thunder" the protagonists, the setting, and the theme all changed the outcome of the story. I will compare and contrast all of these literary elements to prove why you should stay on the path. The settings of both stories were very dangerous. "The Sound of Thunder" is in a prehistoric time with dinosaurs, "That – Mr. Travis pointed – is the jungle of sixty million, two thousand, fifty five years before President Keith". "Being Prey" is in a present day marsh that is abundant with crocodiles, "There are the crocodiles, lots of them along the river." "The Sound of Thunder" was untouched by humans while "Being Prey" was a little bit touched or altered by humans. Both stories were different and similar but dangerous at the same time. The protagonists of both stories had a trait that ultimately got them in grave trouble. In both stories there was a path that for some reason or another the protagonist wanders off of. "Eckels not looking back, walked blindly to the edge of the path, his gun limp in his arms, stepped off the path," Eckels was petrified and ended up getting in ... "The Sound of Thunder" developed its theme of, Your Actions Have Consequences by Eckels regretting his trip to hunt a dinosaur, stepping off the path and "Embedded in the mud, glistening green and gold and black, was a butterfly, very beautiful, and very dead," his stepping off the path and killing a butterfly altered the future in many unseen ways. "Being Prey" developed the same theme, but by a curious woman named Plumwood that wandered off the path. "As the current moved me towards it, the stick developed eyes!" this led to the struggle for survival between Plumwood and the crocodile. Even though the stories had the same theme, it was developed a bit ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Speech On Birds In Peril Birds in Peril Eleven species of animals have gone extinct over the past two centuries. To many people, this statement would not shock them. They will just see it as a statistic. Many others though; would want to do something to stop this from happening. Problems include natural disasters, homes being taken away or destroyed, hunted for their feathers or the fur that they provide; There are many factors as to why these animals disappear but people are the number one cause as to why animals decline so rapidly in numbers. Many people know there are people who don't give a rip about animals, and there are some that are in–between, and others that absolutely love animals. The problem here are the people that do not like animals at all. Trees are cut down, pollution thrown wherever, and not even once do they think about the animals that occupy these essentials. They do not think about the river that the animals need to drink out of. They do not think of the birds that live in the trees, or other animals that look to them as a food source. The thing is, these animals know when their habitat is not suitable to live in. "These birds called raptors which means 'carry away' in Latin; know when their habitat isn't suitable, which then gives a sign to other animals to find another place. These birds of prey are in constant threat of being killed, whether it be by pollution, their homes being taken away or they are shot down in fear of them killing the farm animals farm owners provide." ... • 3. Tyto Alba's Diet Analysis Discussion: After 24 (1992–2016) years 2,176 pellets were analysed by the students at the County College of Morris. Additionally, on average each pellet contained 2.6 prey equating to an average of 963 prey discovered in owl pellets per year (Table 1). After the analysis of the pellets it was discovered that the Tyto alba consumed a wide spectrum prey, primarily rodents. A total of six prey species were discovered. The Microtus commonly known as voles were the most abundant prey in the Tyto alba's diet. Three thousand six hundred and twenty three remains of the Microtus were identified in pellets that were analysed with a relative abundance of 64.2%. Microtus is most abundant in temperate and tropical regions, a common habitat for the Tyto ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, there were factors that had a negative impact on the study such as the misidentification of prey. The remains of the consumed prey were small and very fragile which made them prone to breakage. Additionally, before the pellets were transported to the County College of Morris for analysis, they were stored and preserved in a lab at the Carolina Biological Supply Company. This made it difficult to figure out if the prey composite was the Tyto alba's year round diet or if the dominant species that were consumed depended on the season. In the future the time between when the owl pellets are gathered to when they are analyzed should be reduce to give a more accurate data about the Tyto alba's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. From Prey to Predators Cold is encircling you, and the deeper you go, the tighter it squeezes. There's enough light for you to see a dark, looming shape weaving back and forth through the water, slowly heading toward you. It aggressively opens its mouth, ready to gulp you down its starving stomach, and its teeth seem to sparkle with hunger. But something else catches eye. Abruptly bolting past you, it swiftly devours a fish twice its size. Welcome to the Pelagic zone. Large organisms roam this open space, and this is perhaps why another name for it is the Open–ocean zone. Including numerous subzones, this limitless territory has includes the subzones of the epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathypelagic, and abyssopelagic. Despite being home to many large predators though, many species use it to spawn, grow to maturity, feed, and breed. Slightly or majorly morphing in order to survive in your surroundings, adapting, is required for this ever–changing environment, and phytoplankton, sunfish, and flying fish have become adept at this skill. A deceiving family name surrounds this organism, or animal. Even though it is called a fish, a glitter just above the surface of the ocean's water might just be it. Admirably capable of swimming and flying, flying fish are pure evidence of how nature has learned to adapt. One adaptation they possess is an unequally split tail, for this gives them more control over movement. Flying Fish also have another trait that allows them to get airborne, expanded pelvic fins. ... • 5. Natural History Of Raptors : Raptor Biology And Hunting... Natural History of Raptors Raptor Biology and Hunting Methods Adam M. House Due: June 15, 2015 Dr. Yunger The adaptability and evolutionary history of Raptors is remarkable and a learning opportunity for humans. Some raptors are acrobats and blur through dangerous tree lines and brush to catch prey with its agility and speed. Others take a less energy consuming route by soaring high above plains and grasslands and only take advance towards prey with large talons and its eyesight that is to be marveled at. A few take an even more conservative approach by feeding on the already deceased and rotting flesh of almost any carrion. There is also a species of raptor that uses its ability to see at night as if everything is illuminated and sits or stalks its prey through the night. Raptors have evolved different methods of survival but all species are related in many ways as well. Living life every day risking life and limb is something that some raptors have chosen due to their innate ability to out–match its prey with extreme speed and ultimate agility. These raptors mainly belong to the family of buteo or hawks; such as the sharp–shinned hawk, Swainson's hawk, and Cooper's Hawk. They are small, long–tailed hawks with short, rounded wings. "They have small heads that in flight do not always project beyond the "wrists" of the wings" (allaboutbirds.org). Most of these species migrate south out of Canada and remain in North America for most of the year, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Predator Prey Paper The role of predation is critical in shaping ecosystem structure and function (Berger et al., 2001; Hawlena and Schmitz, 2010). Predator–prey interactions can alter community composition (Kneite and Chase, 2004), mediate trophic cascades (Mooney et al., 2010), increase biodiversity (Letnic and Ritchie, 2012), and affect species invasions (Snyder et al. 2004). Furthermore, predators can control the dynamics of prey populations by influencing such aspects as survival, growth, behavior, size structure, and distribution (Beauchamp et al., 2007) while prey can likewise regulate predator populations (Yoshida et al., 2003; Ishii and Shimada, 2010). One of the primary components of predator–prey interactions is the behavior and subsequent survival of prey in the presence of predators which we focus on in this study. For decades scientists have studied the behavioral response of prey to predators. Numerous studies have directly linked prey activity levels (e.g. Skelly, 1994; McIntyre et al. 2012) and refuge use (e.g. Cowlishaw, 1997; Belgrad and Smith, 2014) to predation risk, while other investigations have determined that predator avoidance behaviors (e.g. migration, reduced foraging) can limit prey growth (Werner et al., 1983), development (Skelly and Werner, 1990), and fecundity (Peckarsky et al., 1993). These behavioral changes also have an enormous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 8. Prey Summary By Michael Crichton "Prey summary" The book "Prey", is a novel written by Michael Crichton. This novel explains the wonders and potential hazards of nanotechnology. The plague had formed from a cloud of nanoparticles or microrobots, that had escaped from a laboratory. This started off as a so–called "harmless" cloud that is self–sustaining and self–reproducing, which means it can be extremely powerful. This cloud is intelligent and will evolve from things and become more and more deadly with every passing hour. It has become so powerful that every attempt after attempt has failed when trying to destroy this plague. This cloud has even now turned itself into large swarms that will get the prey it feeds off of to get bigger and less destructible. As this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 10. Prey By Michael Crichton Summary For my book report, I decided to choose the book, "Prey", by Michael Crichton. This selection teaches many scientific facts in a story like form. The story "Prey", is based in the Nevada desert when suddenly an experiment goes terribly wrong. Scientist had created nanoparticles, micro– robots, to help people, but instead of these robots helping people, they kill all living objects. To make matters even worse, all of the micro–robots have escaped and humans are its prey. Scientist have tried multiple times to destroy them, but every procedure has been unsuccessful. With each passing hour, the nanoparticles become more and more deadly. In this selection, the main character, Jack, is married to a scientist, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the very beginning of his novel, he talks about how many of us today are not fully grasping the world's implications. He believes people are not noticing what is truly going on around them today in nature. Crichton wants us to capture the real meaning of evolution in this story. He wants us to envision a world where every living plant, insect, and animal species is changing at every instant. The author wants us to know that whole populations of organisms are rising and falling, shifting and changing every second of the day. This is called biosphere. Biosphere means that we do not know the advance consequences of anything that we do. This is because us people either do not know enough or that the ever–changing world responses to our actions in many different ways. Biosphere responds unpredictably to our actions. The author is saying that we are unaware of what is going on around us. For example, in the story people were clueless that the robots had escaped and people did not know how to destroy these dangerous machines. • 11. Predator Predator – Prey Relationships The relationship between predators and their prey is an intricate and complicated relationship; covering a great area of scientific knowledge. This paper will examine the different relationships between predator and prey; focusing on the symbiotic relations between organisms, the wide range of defense mechanisms that are utilized by various examples of prey, and the influence between predators and prey concerning evolution and population structure. Symbiosis is the interaction between organisms forming a long term relationship with each other. Many organisms become dependent on others and they need one another or one needs the other to survive. Symbiotic interactions include forms of parasitism, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Parasites are what is called host specific, this means that their anatomy, metabolism, and life–style is adapted to that of their host(1973). Some parasites react to the behavior of their hosts, an interaction called social parasitism(1989). More simply put a parasite might take advantage of the tendencies of a particular species for the benefit of it's own. An example of this is the European Cuckoo. In this case the grown cuckoo destroys one of the host birds eggs and replaces it with one of it's own(1991). The host bird then raises the cuckoo nestling even when the cuckoo is almost too large for the nest and much bigger than the host bird(1991). This is a case where the parasite uses the host to perform a function and making life and reproduction easier on itself. Parasite and host relationships hold an important part of homeostasis in nature.(1975). Parasitism is an intricate component in the regulation of population of different species in nature. Mutualism is another topic at hand in discussing predator–prey relationships. Mutualism is a symbiotic relationship in which both members of the association benefit(1989). Mutualistic interaction is essential to the survival or reproduction of both participants involved(1989). The best way to describe the relationships of mutualism is through examples. We will give examples of mutualism from different environments. Bacteria ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Owl Pellet Lab Report Lab Report: Owl Pellet Kirsten de Jong September 19, 2015 1. An owl pellet is made up of portions of things which an owl can't digest. The pellet can contain things like feathers, bones, fur, and teeth, these things have very little nutritional value to the owl. These things are tightly formed together in the owl's stomach, which is then spit out by the owl every 12 hours producing two every day. 2. Owl pellets are home and food for many different fungi and insects. Fumigation is the removal of any small insects, germs, or other pests from a room or other area, with the use of gases or smoke. It is necessary for the pellet to be fumigated so there is nothing growing inside of the pellet that wasn't there when the owl had spit it out. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There would be major changes if the barn owl wasn't part of the food web. There would be many more rodents and other pests in agricultural and forestry land, which would eventually become overpopulated. God created a perfect world and if there was even one animal that wasn't part of an ecosystem, there would be many species with overpopulation issues. 8. Bioconcentration is when tiny creatures capture chemicals from debris, which is a large source of diseases, and water which are then devoured by large populations of zooplankton. Larger organisms like my sides then eat the zooplankton, fish feed on the mysids, this continues until the herring which is at the top of this food web. This can causes many diseases to spread over a period of time from one creature to the next and possibly worsen. Bioaccumulation is when the matter of an organism increases in concentration. 9. Owls can be seen as the most threatened of an ecosystem which is threatened by pesticides because it is the highest trophic level in the food web. The higher the trophic level, the higher the concentration of toxins in the species. There may be a tiny bit of pesticide in a plant which is then eaten by a insect which is then eaten by a shrew. The use of synesthesia is very persuasive here because it makes the viewer experience other senses than vision. It makes the viewer feel like they are the animal in the ad which is a very good technique to use in this situation because it puts the viewer in "the preys" shoes. One thing that the Shoes of Prey ad lacks is the amount of text provided in the written ad. This really affects the amount of customers that we acquire. The amount of text is what really can draw people in but without enough information/explanation, it is hard for people to really understand why they should buy the product. Another flaw to the ads were the lack of comparisons. Implementing more forms of comparison (simile or metaphor) would have been very useful in our case. We could have used comparison to show how our product is better than all of our competitors. We should have compared the materials to other companies product to show why our shoes are the ... • 15. An Apology To My Prey Commentary "An Apology to my Prey" by Joyce Sidman. The purpose of this poem is to help us understand what people mean when they talk. Body Paragraphs The Author uses sarcastic language to help us understand what the poem means. For example: when he said "Let me offer an apology, too, for my talons impossibly long and curved..." why would you show off while you apologise, you should feel regretful. In addition to that: when he said," I am sorry. For you, that is. All this works out quite well for me". You would not be biased when you apologise, only when you are sarcastic. It is a good way to use expressive language and attract the reader. The author, in this poem, uses figurative language to grab a reader's interest and curiosity: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Analysis Of The Film Prey I believe the film Prey should be allowed to be broadcasted on television. The movie is about a small family, who travels to Africa so the father can continue his career as a hydro–electrical engineer and build a dam. Ultimately, the father's two children are forced to go on a safari with only their stepmother. Tensions are high between the teenage daughter and her stepmother, due to the father's divorce from her biological mother. During this safari, the ranger decides to take the family offroading. Both the ranger, native hunter, and the big game hunter are mauled visibly. As this terror happens, very fake blood squirts all over the screen, but there isn't any gruesome body pictures shown until scavengers have made the human unrecognizable. The camera often cuts away from the attack, before any horrific images cover the screen. It gives the audience the message of a traumatizing attack, without showing how bad it really is. The context of the movie is about survival, not murder. It depicts how dangerous nature can be, especially in a place like Africa. Until there is accurate research regarding "violent" program's effects on people, I don't believe something shouldn't be broadcasted unless it is immensely inappropriate or inhumane. Our textbook, even explains that violent behavior blamed on the media, can often be tied to other variables and not just a specific program on television or radio. Overall, Prey isn't any more outrageous or controversial than any other type of movie broadcasted. It has violence, but a majority of mature movies do these days. It wouldn't be fair for me to deny this movie, when the message it portrays is realistic and not shoved down the audience's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Analysis Of H Is For Hawk, By Helen Macdonald In Helen Macdonald's memoir, H is for Hawk, she explores her journey of grief and recovery following the death of her father and how a goshawk and the wildness it embodies allows her to rediscover herself and restore her own humanity. In the very first chapter Macdonald takes time to assert her opinion of the sanctity and power of the wild, a world separate from and yet connected to our own, very much like the land of Faery from Gaelic and later English mythologies. To Macdonald the wild is a place and a presence that is both alien and familiar. Macdonald hunts down these places that to her seem to be more deeply connected to that force, wildness within and beyond all things. Macdonald relishes in these places' beauty, as her father had taught ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Macdonald experiences a near prophetic realization that she requires a goshawk and by intense impulse she purchases a goshawk from a man in Scotland over the internet, having immediately become enthralled by the grace and beauty of the bird the man puts on display, and spends all her time training it, and finally reveling in the sight of the hawk in flight, losing herself in the righteous fury of a predator at work. She thinks of herself less and less as a part of humanity, stating a feeling of disconnect and alienness with other people and society at large being much more comfortable hunting with her hawk. Macdonald begins to associate more closely with the hawk than with people, believing herself to be turning into a hawk at some personal level, "Hunting with the hawk took me to the very edge of being human. Then it took me past that place to somewhere I wasn't human at all," (195). Macdonald fancies herself a changeling born of another world, the world of man being nothing but a place of discomfort and pain, she sees her only chance at a reprieve to return to a place of swaying trees and impenetrable fog where goshawks rule the sky, where wildness dwells and reigns supreme. In this sense Macdonald's hobby is far more than just a hobby to her, she at some level believes that this distance between her and other people, and her obsession with Mabel is all a part of her healing process, of some unspoken, unknowable ritual in which the wild will encapsulate all that she is and remove her from pain and ... Humans have added to this effect due to their irresponsible use of fossil fuels and polluting the environment increasing the amount of green house gases in the atmosphere. One of the results of climate change is ocean acidification, this occurs from the ocean absorbing the carbon from the atmosphere reacting with the water and forming carbonic acid. Strategies And Characteristics Of The Crowned Eagle In Africa Everyone probably had a thought of being a specific animal for a period of time, perhaps at that moment, she didn't want to be a human being. So she thought, "A Crowned Eagle would be pretty interesting." Not only does the name sound super cool and fascinating, but it is a large bird of prey, in other words, it is the most powerful eagle. The Crowned Eagle won't have to have concerns about getting eaten, and mostly food supply. Moreover, the Crowned Eagle could just enjoy life without having to worry about most of the survival needs. Because the strategies and steps of how the eagle hunts are fantastically amazing. It even has a partner to support on hunting the fast monkeys. Besides the efficient hunting ability, it also has a strong build–up body. The Crowned eagle has many firm body parts that will help it to survive, such as the body mass, the strong talons, and the beak length. Additionally, the flying ability that the Crowned eagle is able to do is beyond expectations. Being a Crowned Eagle is an interesting thought with combinations of strong hunting skills, the powerful body structure, and the beauty of flying. • 21. Eel Imobilize Prey Electric eels are capable of generating powerful shocks that can immobilize prey. Discharges emitted from volleys into the environment can cause prey in hiding to experience involuntary muscle twitching causing it to be revealed to the eel. The revelation of hidden prey allows the eel to continue its attack and go into predatory strike mode. This study (Catania, 2014) sets out to show that the powerful shocks produced by eels activate motor neurons in their prey causing muscle contractions in the prey to be temporarily halted and the eel to be able to control their target through high–frequency volleys. An eel was placed in a naturalistic experimental environment with other fish and the fishes' response to high–voltage pulses was observed. If there was a strong enough discharge, the fish was unable to move on its on accord and was captured by the eel. A pitched fish was placed behind an agar barrier, which received the same discharge as the eel directed toward earthworms placed in the same environment. When an adaptation is developed, it gives an organism certain physical characteristics that create an advantage for survival and can come to dominate in a population. The weakest and unhealthiest become dinner for those predators and also become a positive thing for the species that only the strongest of the herd will survive and continue to reproduce. Benefits of Predation When a predator makes a kill, it feeds not only them, but other species as well. For example, if there is an elk kill, this will feed other predators like bear, mountain lion, coyotes, eagles and others. Smaller rodents and other scavengers, like ravens will also benefit from a kill. We are predators ourselves we have to kill to eat, just most of us don't do it ourselves, if we are meat– eaters. What we don't eat can go to the dogs and feed them. Bacteria and other parasites can also join in on the fun. Other things we don't eat, can go to compost, so there are many ways in which predation benefits the food chain. It definitely feeds various links on the food web. Predation is also used to control populations of certain problematic species, such as snails, which pass certain types of diseases to other species including humans, as explained by Molles. They have used crayfish in some places such as Kenya and other East African countries to control a problematic snail population. • 35. The Predators And Prey Species Abstract: It is important to know information about the predators and prey species in an ecosystem. The focus of predator management is to minimize predation using nonlethal and lethal methods. Carnivores are vital for biological systems. Removing predators that eat the prey will cause a decline in the plants biomass. Problems with predation can be heavily influences by humans. Impacts on predators or prey can be from global warming, habitat loss, War, etc. Adult porcupines are one of the many species that are affected by global warming. Any prey species that molts to white pelage early in the winter due to global warming may expose themselves to predators easier because, if there is a heat spell, white fur will not be effective camouflage with loss of the snow. Other contributors for the decline of prey can be from drought which could dampen the amount of available resources or from interspecific completion for a common resource. There are some ethic and non–ethic methods used for managing predators. Both methods can be used but, are better at different scenarios. Using lethal methods is controversial because it can conflict with public opinions, laws and regulations, animal rights, etc. Predator management is costly depending on the action taken. Economic loss in agricultural livestock from predators is one of the main conflicts that is dealt with to manage predators. Introduction: Predator control has probably been used from ancient times ever since we began the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Analysis Of A Hawk From A Handsaw Angus, Bill. "'A Hawk from a Handsaw': A New Contextualization." Notes & Queries, vol. 56, no. 1, Mar. 2009, p. 60. EBSCOhost. The author of the article discusses how Shakespeare is making a connection between the actors and informers. The author suggests that this connection was not accidental because it is used to connect debates between authority and corruption. It is focusing on Hamlet's first encounter with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and the phrase "hawk from a handsaw" from the play. Imagery of predatory birds is used to describe the informers. This article's audience would probably be people who are familiar with the play. I found this article useful because it was a very detailed textual criticism. It also provides evidence for the argument that "handsaw" is a corrupted form of the word "heronshaw," or young heron. There are many explanations about how the use of birds of prey in Shakespeare's play "Hamlet" expresses Hamlet's recklessness. The author pulls many different interpretations into his argument from various scholars. Brooks, Onel. "How Might Hamlet Help to Educate Psychotherapists?." Psychodynamic Practice, vol. 14, no. 2, May 2008, pp. 207–214. EBSCOhost. The author of the article discusses how the character Hamlet can help psychotherapists. He says that Hamlet can be used as a tool to help educate therapists. The character Hamlet would be a good example for therapists to analyze because he experiences mourning, despair, and trauma. • 37. Thermosensation In Predator-Prey Interactions Thermosensation plays a similar role in predator–prey interaction by the use of TRPA1 and TRPV1 ion channels. The vampire bat can sense infrared radiation by using a modified TRPV1 channel. In other mammals, TRPV1 is used to detect noxious heat greater than 43ºC , vampire bats however, have an activation threshold for this receptor that is around 30ºC. To further differentiate the vampire bat's TRPV1 receptor from other mammals, it is not expressed in the dorsal root ganglia. Instead it is located in their facial nerves located near the bat's upper lip and nose. Giving bats the ability to find locations of their prey with the easiest access to blood. (Gracheva et al, 2011) To combat this, prey have been shown to reduce the bats' feeding time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Predator-Prey Theory Evolutionary Theory on Predators and Prey Evolutionary psychologists believe that the human mind is a blank slate, that is, people retain what they learn from the information or knowledge they learn from the environment or through some other external forces (Tooby & Cosmides, 2005). One example of a learning which is attained through observation and in depth study of the environment is the evolutionary theory on predators and prey. A predator is understood to be an organism which naturally eats another organism (Yam, 2011). On the other hand, the prey is the organism which the predator eats (Yam, 2011). The environment gives us the idea that the predator and prey both evolve together. This means that the prey is considered to be a part of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Nietzsche's Birds Of Prey And The Lambs Throughout history, the concept of morality and its values have been argued by notable philosophers observing the society they lived within. With the concept of morality comes the idea of moral behavior that we have adopted in today's age, such as: generosity, kindness, truthfulness, integrity, loyalty, commitment, open–mindedness, and dependability. The controversial issue that come from these so called "morals," is that these values have had an flip, opening the gate to two types of morality systems that have had us wondering if our morality system has helped or ruined us. Friedrich Nietzsche, a german philosopher, commonly associated with advocating Nihilism and the phrase, "God is dead, God will remain dead, we have killed him,"(Nietzsche, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Birds of Prey are natural predators, seeking out the wekaest prey to latch on to in order to gain the energy for life, and the nobles, according to Nietzsche, are doing the exact same. He portrays this idea with the statement, " to demand of strength that it not express itself as strength that is not be a desire to overwhelm, a desire to cast down, a desire to become a lord, a thirst for enemies and resistance and triumphs, is just as nonsensical as to demand of weakness that it express itself as strength," (Nietzsche, 13) meaning that all the actions that the Birds of Prey have commited are being undertaken because it would be unjust for them to deny who they truly are. He is portraying that if a group is powerful, they will strive to stay on top and therefore, all their actions will be justified with the idea that it is in our very nature to act in our own self interest, and those who oppose are only furthering themselves from the actual truth of morality. Because of this, the lambs and the little lambs who consider themselves to be "patient, humble, and righteous," are in the wrong according to Nietzsche when they claim that, "good is everyone who does not do violence.., who ...
