1.Introduction
This project is the final project of ENBE. The idea of this project is to
understand the component and the elements of a town and what makes a
better liveable future town. As a mayor I was proposed to create a town. A
sustainable and livable new town for the citizen which on an island.
Before I start to plan the town, there is a lots of research about a town I
have to do. It is importance to know that how to make a town sustainable
and livable. Understanding the requirement of this project and propose a
new layout for the town in very quickly.
By doing this subject, student will get to understand the elements of the
natural and built environment in their basic unit, form and function. And also
get to know more about ways to make it sustainable and better living.

2.1 The Town Definition
A town is a human settlement larger than a village but smaller than a city.
The size definition for what constitutes a "town" varies considerably in
different parts of the world.
2.2 What is the brief history
The word town shares an origin with the German word Zaun, the Dutch word
tuin, and the Old Norse tun. The German word Zaun comes closest to the
original meaning of the word: a fence of any material. An early borrowing
from Celtic *dunom (cf. Old Irish dun, Welsh din "fortress, fortified place,
camp," dinas "city;"
In some cases, "town" is an alternate name for "city" or "village" (especially a
larger village). Sometimes, the word "town" is short for "township". In general,
today towns can be differentiated from townships, villages, or hamlets on the
basis of their economic character, in that most of a town's population will
tend to derive their living from manufacturing industry, commerce, and public
services rather than primary industry such as agriculture or related activities.
2.3 What makes a town
A town which is consisting of a town center, buildings, basic of hard and soft
infrastructure, service station, less populated than a city and etc.
2.4 What makes a good town/ township (guidelines etc)
1. Fixed transit, preferably rail, above and below ground. Subways along all
major travel corridors; buses or trains on all secondary corridors.
2. Living spaces everywhere, especially near downtown.
3. Large or small public squares at all significant intersections.
4. Lots if people coming and going( immigrants, people moving in from other
places, and people moving out to others cities.)
5. Street trees and rooftop gardens for pleasure, and to ameliorate
temperature extremes and reduce need for HVAC(heating, ventilation and
air conditioning).
6. Mixed-use, mixed-income neighborhoods.

6. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation
7. Light rail or rapid train connection to the airport. Freight and passenger rail
depots in town.
2.5 What is the future towns
It’s a eco town. Future Towns Theory covers every aspect of disaster resistant
building, from large town sized buildings to small dwellings, such as 'The Safe
House'. It also discusses other disasters, such as poor air quality, asteroid strikes
and volcanic and Earthquake activity
3. Investigation & Data Collection:
Ancient towns-
Corfu Town, Greece.
3.1 When did it start? History and all
Corfu is a city and a former municipality on the island of Corfu, Ionian Islands,
Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform, it is part of the municipality
Corfu, of which it is a municipal unit. It is the capital of the island and of the
Corfu regional unit. The city also serves as a capital for the region of the
Ionian Islands. The city is a major tourist attraction, and has played an
important role since the 8th century. The city has become known as a
Kastropolis (Castle City) because of its two castles. The municipal unit of Corfu
city has a land area of 41.905 km2
and a total population of 39,487
inhabitants.

3.2 What ancient town are you concentrating on?
It is an old fortifications town .
3.3 What makes is a significant town and what are the details?
The Old Town of Corfu, on the Island of Corfu off the western coasts of
Albania and Greece, is located in a strategic position at the entrance of
the Adriatic Sea, and has its roots in the 8th century BC. The three forts of
the town were used for four centuries to defend the maritime trading
interests of the Republic of Venice against the Ottoman Empire. As a
fortified Mediterranean port, Corfu’s urban and port ensemble is notable
for its high level of integrity and authenticity.
3.4 Conclusion about the town
All that amalgam of architectural style gives to Corfu town a unique charm,
character and atmosphere that reminds of the glamorous Italian town of
Naples. Having been greatly expanded during the Venetian times, Corfu is
separated into a northern and a southern section.
3.5 What information or element that you can use to your new future city
The town of Corfu, although geographically relatively flat has several
interesting viewpoints, not only thanks to its fortresses which had to have
bird’s eye view of the enemy, but also due to its unique coastline, which
unlike most shores, is not a long stretch of sand but a mixture of bays, islets
and penínsulas.

4.Investigation & Data Collection:
Present City –
New York City, United States
4.1 When did it start? History and all
The first person to visit the area which is now known as New York City was Giovanni
da Verrazano who discovered the area in 1524, when he sailed into the area and
landed there. The discovery and first settlement of the area occurred in 1609 by
Henry Hudson, who found the location while searching for a new route to Asia. The
settlement was called New Amsterdam and established as a Dutch trading
colony. The name of the settlement would eventually become New York in 1664,
when the British took control of the colonies.
New York City became an important city during the Revolutionary War period and
for a brief time period, it was Capital of the new United States after the colonies
declared their independence. In the 1800's, with the opening of the Erie Canal
providing passage to the Great Lakes, New York became one of the most
important sea ports on the Atlantic Ocean, and became a center of trade. This
lead to a substantial population growth into the largest city in the United States.
New York City also became a destination for immigrants coming in to the country
to begin a new life. In the early 1900's millions of people came though Ellis Island
seeking citizenship in the United States. A vast majority of these immigrants settled
in New York City, which today is still one of the most diverse populations in the
world.
Over time the city has grown to be a population center in the United States as well
as a center for various activities. New York City is known for Broadway, the fabulous
skyline, Central Park, Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, top sports venues and

teams, and is one of the top destinations for tourists around the world.
4.2 What town are you concentrating on?
Dense transportation City.
4.3 What makes is a significant town and what are the details?
New York is the most populous city in the United States and the center of one
of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world—the New York
metropolitan area. A global power city, New York exerts a significant impact
upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology,
education, and entertainment. The home of the United Nations
Headquarters, New York is an important center for international diplomacy
and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world.
On one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five
boroughs, each of which is a county of New York State.
Many districts and landmarks in New York City have become well known to
the city's approximately 55 million annual visitors.
The New York City Subway is one of the most extensive metro systems
worldwide.
4.4 Conclusion about the towns
New York City, is the most populous city in the United States. New York City, being
the most populous city in the United States, has a transportation system which
includes one of the largest railway systems in the world.
4.5 What information or element that you can use to your new town
New York City has a good railway system. A good railway system can reduce the
usage of vehicle. Railway system will be plan in my town.

The future of towns and Better Towns
Shanghai, China.
PinkCloud, an architecture collective in Copenhagen, has developed the
proposal FLIP/CITY SHANGHAI, which vertically flips the horizontal urban
streetscape, inclusive of green space and city clusters, in the hope of
preserving a sustainable community measured by a human scale. The group
based their plan for FLIP/CITY on the MVRDV-designed Mirador building in

Madrid. The Mirador stacks neighborhoods vertically around a sky plaza, and
is but one of many vertical city concepts, including Shanghai’s own Shanghai
Tower.
As a reactive healing force, this city could renew weak urban zones in decline
by filling voids and dead space with functioning, thriving neighborhoods. Most
importantly, this new typology would have the capacity to maximize green
space and solve infrastructural issues while creating an efficient, accessible
circulation system for public transit.

5.1 How did you came up with the solution to create this new town
The population of Malacca has increasing dramatically in these few years
and the air condition is bad due to the large amount of vehicles. As a
mayor, this is an opportunity and privilege for the citizens to get far away
from their town and live in a new sustainable town. There is a few amount
of island nearby Malacca so developing a new town on an island is the
best idea.
5.2 Why is VERT TOWN?
“Vert” is word in France which means “Green”. The whole island provides
a sustainable and livable town for the citizen which has a lots of green
approaches.
5.3 Aim of the new town
1. Sustainable lifestyle.
2. Mainly for agriculture and tourism.
3. Safe Security.
5.4 What is the important characteristic and elements
It is based on the radial grid system to design my town and the area of the whole
island is about 21.57km square. The population of Vert Town is about 158,000.
My town will be focus on tourism and agriculture. There will be a huge mountain
located at the center of the town. It is the main attraction of the tourism as it is

unique and placed at the center of the town. While being self-sufficient food supply
can help eco-conscious individuals lessen their dependence on assistance in many
ways even while they help the environment.
Elements in Vert Town
1.Types of Hard Infrastructure
- Transportation
Bicycle and Maglev trains will be the main transportation in Vert Town. There is
no others vehicle as it can prevent from air pollution.
∗ Bicycle path can be found all over the island. It is fully
safety and healthy for human‘s health. Accident will
not happen in the island.
∗ Citizens may also travel with “Magnetic
levitation” train. It probably link to
airport and all shopping malls. A
magnetic force lifts and propels the
train using a minimal amount of energy
compared to diesel-powered or
electric-powered trains It is helping to
free congested roads and reduce air
pollution. Because of the fast speeds,
the trains have to be routed directly between destinations.

15. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation
- Energy infrastructure such as solar panel and wind turbine
. Solar panel
When the sun is shining, the photo voltaic panels
of a solar PV system capture sunlight and convert
it into direct current electricity.
The Solar PV system, using an inverter, then
converts this electricity into 240V alternating
current electricity which you can use around
your home.
Under a net feed-in system this electricity then
gets distributed for use around your property,
and any excess electricity is fed into the
electricity grid through your electricity meter.
Under a gross feed-in system all of the electricity generated is fed into the
electricity grid through your electricity meter.
. Wind turbine
Simply stated, a wind turbine works the opposite of a
fan. Instead of using electricity to make wind, like a
fan, wind turbines use wind to make electricity. The
wind turns the blades, which spin a shaft, which
connects to a generator and makes electricity. View
the wind turbine animation to see how a wind turbine
works or take a look inside.

2. Types of soft infrastructure
- The system of government and law enforcement , emergency services such
as
Police station, fire protection and ambulance, military infrastructures

- Agriculture, forestry
- Health care system such as hospital and clinic
- Educational system such as kindergarten, primary school, high school,
college
and university
5.5 Sustainable Approaches
∗ Cycling instead of driving. It can reduce air pollution.
∗ Resist freeway widening, get train routes expanded to reach
our community.
∗ Green roofing. Green roofs provide shade and remove heat from the air
through evapotranspiration, reducing temperatures of the roof surface
and the surrounding air.

From doing this project that what I‘ve learnt is before planning a town, do a
comprehensive investigation is really important. As the project brief has mentioned
above, to plan for the future we should refer to the past because we should learn
from history to achieve a better future.
For me, the best learning outcome of this project is I have gained more
knowledge about the green technologies and the next is what component of a
town should have that only can makes a good and sustainable town. As nowadays
the earth is getting more polluted, human have the responsibility to aware of and
everyone should start to conserve and preserve the whole world.
Lastly, a town it is not just consisting a few buildings but also has to consists of
spaces for human activities and interactions. The key to have a better future is to
have a sustainable and livable town.
