- 3. We would do anything to protect our kids.
- 4. They can’t be protected from some things.
- 5. Kids know the truth.
- 6. They need to know they can still trust the adults they love.
- 7. It will take all of your strength and courage.
- 8. Tell the age-appropriate truth.
- 9. We all dread the big question.
- 10. Open the door to conversation.
- 11. The child will come in when s/he is ready… but not before.
- 12. It’s okay for kids to see a sad grown-up.
- 13. You should explain your tears and bring your child near.
- 14. Frustration is the hallmark symptom of ALS.
- 15. It’s important to label emotions.
- 16. Kids follow the lead of the grown-ups.
- 17. There is never too much support.
- 18. You can help by talking to their teachers.
- 19. Normalcy…
- 20. …is worth its weight in gold
- 21. How can they have normalcy??
- 22. Let them be kids.
- 23. It’s okay to have fun even though your loved one has ALS.
- 24. They need their friends.
- 25. Remember that they need grown-ups, too.
- 26. Children need so much reassurance.
- 27. They need to know who will make their lunch.
- 28. They need to know that the ALS is not their fault.
- 29. Kids don’t know the parent you thought you’d be.
- 30. You can find new ways to show your love.
- 31. It’s not easy, but follow your heart.
- 32. The kids just want your presence.
- 33. They see you with their heart.
- 34. You are still Superman to them…
- 35. …or Superwoman, of course!
- 36. Kids will experience many emotions because they feel their family is different.
- 37. Kids handle emotions differently.
- 38. Their attitude will mirror yours.

- 40. Objective 1: Be able to explain three developmental stages of children.

- 44. Objective 2: Three things to tell parents to help them guide their kids:
- 45. Lead with your heart.
- 46. Speak the truth.
- 47. Teach families how to keep things as “normal” as possible.
- 48. Objective 3: Be able to help the parents identify four warning signs that indicate professional help is needed.
- 49. Changes in appetite or sleeping Grades dropping No longer enjoys the usual activities Too quiet or too angry
- 50. We need a break, just as the kids do.
