was started in great BRITAIN in the latter half
of 18th century. Then,

STATES.
around 1850 in GERMANY

Around 1870 in SWEDEN and JAPAN.
Around 1890 in CANADA and RUSSIA.
“AND THE FIRST TRADE UNION IN INDIA WAS
DEVELOPED IN 1890.”
6. TRADE UNION IN INDIA:
Divide into three periods:
o FIRST PERIOD ( 1875-1918)
o SECOND PERIOD ( 1918-1947)
o THIRD PERIOD ( 1947-TILL DATE)
7. FIRST PERIOD:
formed the societies for the welfare of
the workers.
1st trade union in india – “BOMBAY MILL
HANDS ASSOCIATION (1890)”
AIM- “agitation for the revision of first
indian factories act 1881”.
8. SECOND PERIOD:
• This period is actually for the growth of continous trade
unions.
• B.P. WADIA founded the madras labour union 1919.
• Trade unions like
1) Ahmedabad textile workers union
2) N.W. railway employees union
3) Indian colliery employees union
4) The Jamshedpur labor association
5) The Bombay port trust employees union and
6) The E.B. railway Indian employees association were
formed.
9. SECONDPERIOD:
• By 1924 there were 1671 trade unions in
india.
• The all india trade union congress was
formed in 1920.
10. TRADE UNION AFTER INDEPENDENCE:
“AFTER INDEPENDENCE , TRADE UNION
DEVELOPED INTO AN EFFECTIVE
INSTRUMENT FOR PROTECTING AND
SAFEGUARDING THE INTERESTS OF
LABOURERS.”
