Conventional analysis of Here’s to us
Our film, Here’s to us is a romantic genre film which is aimed at the 16-24 year old female target
audience. Here’s to us is a typical romance film as it follows the stereotypical narrative of how two
people fall in love with conflict which they both manage to get over together. Our two characters fall
in love and then are separated because of their busy lives, they both try to fit back into their normal
work lives but cannot. This narrative is very typical for a romance genre as it results in the two
characters falling in love and then coming back together at the end.
Here’s to us uses many typical romantic conventions such as conflict between the two main
characters for them to overcome together. This will appeal to the target audience as 16-24 year old
girls enjoy watching two people get over their conflicts together as a couple as this is romantic and
brings the two closer together. Here’s to us also uses strong conventional camera movements and
angles to show emotion to the audience for example close ups of the characters holding hands and
walking away builds emotion. Here's to us use of strong camera angles also emphasises the romance
by emphasising the conflict between the characters and then the overcoming of thi s conflict to show
the characters relationship strong. E.g a high angles of the two characters alone at home looking by
themselves the high angle emphasises their emotions by making them look small and weak opposed
to emotionally strong.
The use of mise-en-scene in our romance film is very conventional with the use of effective lighting
and props to emphasis the emotions in our movie. For example a scene where the two are shown
using parallel editing at the same time in two different settings, they are both shown doing activities
to try and keep themselves busy, the use of low key lighting suggests that they are both not happy,
and the emphasis on them both trying to be busy with the use of props such as drinking or working
emphasises how they are both trying to fill the gap of the other person. We have also used lighting
in our trailer to connote the emotions of the certain scenes, for example the scene where the two
are outside at night we have made sure to keep the lighting down to keep it natural and romantic as
the two are in a two shot together, it is very stereotypical that low key lighting can be seen as
romantic especially with a smaller source of light such as a candle or the moon, these are also seen
as romantic due to the representation of the objects, for example the use of the moon in the
background connotes purity, love and romance.
Camerawork and camera angles in our movie trailer are also very conventional for the romance
genre. The use of two shots showing the two actors together connotes there connection and allows
the audience to see the romance between the two actors through body language of the actors. For
example the actors standing closer than normal to each other to show the intimacy between the
characters.
Sound is very important in romance trailers as you want to inform the audience about the movie and
give them a feel for what it is about. For example in our trailer the use of non-diegetic slow paced
music in the background of the trailer emphasises the romance in the film. Also the sound in the
music will build up and get louder to build tension when the trailer shows more tense scenes for
example when the two separate and the girl moves to away to America the music will get louder.
Also the fact that we will add the dialog into the trailer in post-production will make the trailer more
realistic and higher quality. This use of dialog between the two actors will inform the audience what
is happening in the scene. This is very useful and conventional for trailers especially romance trail ers
which have a large amount of conflict and tension which can be shown through dialog. Our movie
trailer is also conventional cutting through parts of the movie to give the audience a look into the
whole movie. This conventional use of cutting is also paired with the voice over as a sound bridge

between the different scenes. This is very conventional for a romance trailer as the voice over builds
tension as it relates with the movie in the background.
The characters in our romance movie trailer are also very conventional for the genre. The male
character is very stereotypical as he is masculine and dominant this is conventional for a romance
movie as the characters are usually gender stereotypical in the romance movies. The female
character in the movie is also conventional however less conventional to the male character as she is
portrayed as stubborn and can make selfish decisions. It is important to have stereotypical
characters in a romance film as the audience enjoy watching romance movies with typical characters
that they can relate to.
