Knight and Day
What techniques are used at the beginning of the trailer to establish the main characters and their emerging relationship? Editing is used to incorporate a flashback effect, showing the characters initial relationship. The initial relationship and the current relationship are very contrasting. During the “flashback” the characters seem to be very calm with each other, and surprisingly trusting considering that it is their first encounter. Contrastingly, the characters are then shown to be uncomfortable around each other, and the female character seems to trust the male character far less than when they first met.
How is the genre of the film suggested in the first thirty seconds of the trailer? Within the first 30 seconds of the film, the trailer suggests the film is mainly an action film, rather than what the true nature of the film is (Action Comedy.) This is suggested by showing a lot of action sequences, emphasising the genre of the film as an action.
What is the effect on the audience of the juxtaposition of high impact action sequences with verbal exchanges between characters? How does this help to set the tone of the film? By adding constant short action sequences, it gives the trailer a fast tempo, therefore, it reflects on the film, giving the impression that the film then itself is fast and furious. The verbal exchange between the characters is similar in terms of tone and pace. A fast, quick response to each statement reflects onto the film itself as having a fast tempo and constantly action filmed.
How does the trailer suggest the film will develop in terms of the relationship between the characters and their role in the plot? What might this suggest about the target audience of the film? The trailer suggest that the relationship between the characters will be similar to that of any stereotypical film relationship. It suggest that the characters meet and instantly become close to one another, then something divides the pair and they get further apart, then the characters reconnect to each other. This suggests that the target audience of the film is mixed. By having action as the main concept, the film will attract the stereotypical younger males. By including a romantic essence, this will stereotypically attract younger females.
Why do you think the titles promoting the stars of the film appear in the last thirty seconds of the trailer rather than at the beginning? What do you notice about the font style of these titles and what does it suggest about the film as a whole? I believe that the names of the stars are shown at the send of the trailer rather than at the start for two reasons. The first reason may be because they director wants to portray the actors as the characters they are portraying, rather than being the actors themselves. The second reason is that the two main characters are well know film actors, and there is little need to state the names of the actors, as it is common knowledge of who it is. The font style for the names shows the last name bolder and larger than the first. This could suggest that the name is more important than the person.
