1. In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge codes and
conventions of real media products?
2. I have not challenged the codes and conventions within my music magazine that I have
created. I chosen to follow the codes and conventions of how a rock music magazine usually
looks like. Throughout this presentation I will be analysing mt front cover, contents page and
double page spread that I Have created for my AS media coursework.
3. Front Cover
My front cover follows the codes and conventions of a real media product in multiple ways. For example my front
cover follows the codes and conventions of real media product due to the positioning of the masthead. I have
chosen to place the masthead "smash" directly at the top of the page and I have centered it. I have also stretched it
out so that it takes up the entire width of the page. Majority of real music magazines follow through with this
style and therefore I haven't developed or challenged the codes of conventions of the masthead positioning. I
have chosen not to go against them as this would be the first issue of my magazine and therefore if I was to jump
into going against them straight away then it wouldn't fit in with the other music magazines being sold. I also
don't have a reputation or house style that has been developed in order for me to decide to go against the codes
and conventions of a real media product.
4. My main image is a direct address. Once again this is following the codes and conventions of a real media
product. I have decided to use a direct address similarly to other music magazine that have already been published
because it creates a personal touch and effect on my audience. If they see someone looking directly into the
camera they will feel like the individual is looking at them and therefore they will be more inclined to buy the
magazine. This also means that they will gain respect for the model appearing on the front cover as they care about
the audience as they are looking at them.
5. I have not have challenged the codes and conventions of a music magazines front cover when using cover lines. I
have framed the subject's face using cover lines. The content of my cover lines follows the codes and conventions
of a real media product as it includes the names of different established bands which are featuring within my
magazine. I have done this to grab my audience's attention away from other magazines and make them want to
buy my magazine rather than theirs.
6. Contents Page
Within my contents page I have carried on to follow the codes and conventions of a real media magazine
product. First of all I have decided to include the name of my magazine within my contents page. I have done this
so that the audience is once again reminded what magazine they are reading. In some ways I have gone again the
codes and conventions in my own way as usually magazines choose to include a screenshot of the front cover of
the magazine that they are reading whereas I decided just to include the name of the magazine rather than the
front cover itself.
