Roles of Culture
Collection
4. • Less than 1% of the described species were held in
culture collection
• More and more culture collections have been lost

SUSTAINABILITY AND USE OF MICROBIAL
RESOURCES
1. Collect and preserve (ex-situ conservation) living microbial
culture
2. Provide the culture accessible to public
3. Provide services to academic institutions and industry (e.g.
identification, detection of pathogen,microbial testing)
4. Conduct studies related to systematic/taxonomy (discovery of
new taxa)
6. 5. Act as safety deposits of microorganisms

10. Vision:
Supporting the development of microbiological science and
biotechnology related to tropical agriculture
Mission:
• Maintaining a general collection of microbes (fungi and
bacteria, bacterio-phages and plasmids)
• Contributing on the scientific development on indigenous
microbes
• Offering services for scientific, industrial and educational
organizations
• Collaborating nationally and internationally
IPBCC VISION AND MISSION
11. 1. Division of Microbial Culture Collection
2. Division of Microbial Identification
3. Division of Microbial Analysis
IPBCC DIVISION
12. 1. Providing culture of fungi and bacteria
2. Storage of fungi and bacteria cultures
3. Analysis of microbial contamination in agricultural products
4. Training on identification of fungi based on morphological
and molecular approach
5. Identification of fungi and bacteria
IPBCC SERVICES
13. Short term goals :
• Maintaining 1500 indigenous microbial collection in 2020.
• Having mutual collaboration with national and international
culture collection.
• Working on ISO 17025:2017 starting from 2011 for
microbial testing
• Being a member of Asian Culture Collection of
Microbiology and World Federation of Culture Collection in
2014.
Long term goals:
• Being a world class culture collection in 2025
IPBCC SHORT AND LONG TERM GOALS
14. - Works under CBD and protocol Nagoya for
management of microbial resource, OECD
guideline for GLP, and BMBL guideline for
biosafety and biosecurity
- Connect resource holders with researchers and
other persons or institutions.
-
- Provides microorganisms services by facilitating
access to microorganisms and associated data for
research, development and application.

15. IPBCC : OTHER FACTS
- Has long term organizational sustainability: non individual-
dependent
- Works under limited capital resources (keeping isolates alive is
still expensive, self-support) and limited expertise (national
networking)
IPBCC EFFORT CREDIBLE CC
17. IPBCC : CREDIBILITY is CHAllENGING
1. Relevancy to the international Agreement (CBD):
- Working under Protocol Nagoya : IPBCC developed MTA
for access and benefit sharing from the utilization of
microbial resources in accordance with MOSSAIC
recommendation.
- Working in International SOP : BSL and ISO 17025
2. CC Networking
Member of Forkomikro (National CC Forum) and ACM
Focal point
18. • member of World Federation of Culture Collection (WFCC)
and contribute to World Data Base of Microorganisms
(WDMC): IPBCC is an affiliate member of WFCC with identity
no. WDMC 1018
IPBCC : CREDIBILITY is CHAllENGING (cont.)
19.
20. • Research networking:
1. Supports the postgraduate research under joint-supervision:
- Ibaraki University
- Tsukuba University
Building human resources capacity:
- Tokyo University (Japan): Exploration on Mycorrhiza in Pinus
- Adeleide University (Australia): Aspergillus niger for
biofertilizer
- GAUG (Germany) : Microbial diversity in Jambi Forest
IPBCC : CREDIBILITY is CHAllENGING
21. FUTURE CHALLENGES : IPBCC CREDIBILITY
• Working on broad spectrum vs specific on certain groups
INDONESIAN FUNGAL CULTURE COLLECTION ----- CBS
(workshop of Aspergillus and Penicillium in collaboraton
with Prof Rob sampson)
• Obtaining ISO 9001:2015 certification
• Developing IPBCC as depository CC
Improving long term preservation facilities
• Developing bioinformatics system:
Contribute to the global catalogue of microorganism
• Maintaining international networking
22. CONCLUSION:
• IPBCC deals with microbial conservation ex-situ and
provides culture to the public for sustainable use
• IPBCC put an effort to work in condition consitent with
Internatioinal guideline for organizational management,
biodiversity, biosafety and biosecurity to support
environmental sustainability
• Within limited resource,
networking is foud to be a key solution
