15. Interview With Kyle
Higman
My Next Assignment…
Who is Kyle Higman?
Media buyer for Sleep Train
Graduated from Penn State in 2006 with an
advertising & public relations degree.
Got her start at Q13 in the sales department
with Dave Kanap.
What her job entails…
Not getting enough sleep can have dangerous consequences as fatigue can lead to physical & mental health issues, impaired learning & judgment, & increases the risk of accidents & death!
A lack of sleep leads to increased symptoms of depression as well as an increase in appetite and food consumption. Research indicates that acute sleep loss enhances the pleasure response processing
In the brain, underlying the drive to consume food. So you are more likely to consume more food, and also more food that has high sugar and fat contents, potentially leading to weight gain. A lack of sleep makes concentrating at work, in class, and even to what your wife is saying more difficult! It can cause you to make poor decisions as your ability to think clearly is impaired! You will also find your memory is effected, as REM sleep aids in memory formation. Your health will also be effected as a lack of sleep results in higher blood pressure and an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Research has shown that people who do not get enough sleep on a regular basis have higher mortality rates!
Extend your life by sleeping well!
The extensive training Sleep Country provides allows employees to provide the best experience possible for Guests. We understand that buying a new sleep system is a big commitment and can cost a pretty penny, so we have a personalized sales process that allows us to not only find our Guest’s their perfect bed, but a process that helps us understand why they’re truly there and how we can help them. We are taught never to pre-judge our guests, as that can ruin a sale and their experience before it ever begins. We remain professional and courteous, yet interested and involved! This allows us to delve deep and discover our Guest’s real reasons for coming in, whether it be a hurting back, neck pains, or their partner tossing and turning so much that it continuously wake them up!
Once we’ve found our Guest’s their perfect sleep system, we then go the extra mile to make it even better! Our services are designed to make the process as easy and smooth as possible for the Guest. We provide free delivery on all orders, no matter how big or small or when they want them. We offer free returns with no hidden redelivery or restocking fees. We remove and recycle the Guest’s old mattress and box springs, saving them the time and hassle of getting rid of it. And to top it off, we give the Guest an entire hundred days to make sure the purchase they made is the right one for them.
Sleep Country is well known for it’s community involvement. The company continuously hosts donation drives to collect school supplies, warm clothing, pajamas, and Christmas gifts to give to local foster children in need. Each district within each state participates in some form of community involvement each quarter. Sleep country even offers incentives for their employees to participate in these events!
As part of my internship I was encouraged to organize a volunteer event for my district and I chose to work with Project Homeless Connect in the Skagit Valley. On September 11th the Skagit Volunteer Center hosted a giant event that was open to those in need within the community. They offered everything from free backpacks and clothing to dental and eye exams. They offered free school supplies, pet neutering, and access to countless resources. It was incredible to see the community come together to provide these resources to homeless and needy individuals. Our Sleep Country team helped organize and monitor the clothing section of the event. We helped Guests find clothing that would work best for them and their needs. Some guests came looking for warmer clothes for the upcoming cold season and some came looking for clothing that would help them get a job. All of the clothing at the event was donated from Value Village, who also offered to BUY back any clothing that remained. Those funds would go back into the Skagit Volunteer Center to help the community. I had an amazing team who jumped at the chance to help out as soon as it was presented to them!
One of my favorite parts of this entire internship was the twenty minutes I spent on the phone with Kyle Higman. Higman is the media buyer for Sleep Train in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. She graduated with a degree in advertising and public relations, which is where I found myself fascinated with her career path. She started out at Q13 news within the sales department where she worked with advertising agencies who bought ad time. It was there she learned about software and media and was able to meet Dave Kanap, who was the director of media at Sleep Country. When Sleep Train decided to move the Sleep Country account in house, Dave Kanap brought her onto the team. From there she was promoted to junior buyer where she took on smaller markets, then as time passed and she gained more experience she was promoted to senior buyer. Interviewing Kyle showed me a great career path that I’ve become interested in pursuing! The advice she gave me was to always be looking for better opportunities, as that was how she landed herself here. She told me not to feel like I have to take the first job offered to me, but to keep pursuing the ones I truly want!
