The definition of sexual abuse is complex and varies among cultures, however, according to
Margaret Alic, sexual abuse is "any nonconsensual sexual exposure or activity and may include any
of the following: voyeurism; exposing of a child to pornography; solicitation of a child; exposing
one's genitals to a child; sexual comments or gestures directed at a child; rape or incest; or forcing,
pressuring, tricking or talking someone into engaging in sexual activity, " (Alic, 2011). Sexual

strategy of their attack. They are precise and they take their time. Abusers are commonly familiar

After reading the article by Rind, Tromovich, and Baserman, and the other associated commentaries
I have drawn a few conclusions. First I do not believe in the Rind et al. 's final theory that child
sexual abuse does not cause intense and extensive harm in the long term. However, I do not fully
renounce all of his theories. I have concluded that their final theory needed more precise research
and there were holes in their research and theory. I also believe that they did not consider the impact
that their article would have on the psychological community, politics, and personal emotional
impact. After I read the first article from Rind et al 's, I felt shock and anger from the content. I
understood that what they wanted to answer a few key questions such as, does child sexual assault
(CSA) cause harm, will the harm be intense, and is the experience similar for both boys and girls in
terms of the negative effects. I felt that the article minimized CSA and the effects it has on the
victims. On page 26 in the left–hand column, Rind states that, "CSA does not typically have
intensely negative psychological effects." Almost the exact same sentence was repeated on page 46
in the right–hand column. On that same page, it inferred that adult–child sex and adult–adolescent

believe no one likes to talk about it because it is sexual in nature. For this reason, the victim may
feel ashamed or embarrassed for having been victimized. They may even feel at fault if they were
coerced into the abuse. Society has placed a taboo on sexual abuse conversations, so when there is a
need to discuss it, the parties involved don't know how to broach the subject. We need to get past

PROTECTION OF CHILDREN FROM SEXUAL OFFENCES ACT, 2012 (HIGHLIGHTS) :
The act has defined a child as any person who is below the age of 18 years and it provides protection
to all those children who are below the age of 18 years "from the offences of sexual assault, sexual
harassment and pornography."[7]

There are many forms of child abuse. Not only can children be physically abused, but they are also
in danger of experiencing sexual abuse. In the more recent years, child sexual abuse has come to the
attention of a larger part of society. As such, it is becoming more openly discussed. Child sexual
abuse is a growing problem, and the stories that have begun to circulate around the world work to

around 20% of women and 5–10% of men in America in were sexually abused as children. A great
deal of controversy surrounds the number of male victims of child sexual abuse, due to a lack of

Elder Abuse, 2014). Men and women today are living longer and want to remain in their own homes
as long as they possibly can, rather than reside in a nursing home or an assisted living facility. In

Incestuous abuse, often–adult children, often fit the same profile: unmarried, unemployed, lives with
elder and is financially dependent on the elder (Ramsey– Klawsnik, 2003). When establishing
reasons for incestuous elder abuse, Ramsey (2003), believes the offenders psychological and
epitomical factors much be considered (Ramsey– Klawsnik, 2003). Adult's sons and daughters who
have abused their mothers and father, often have alcohol or substance abuse problem or mental
health issues. Common characteristics in personality of offenders include: sadism, domineering and
narcissism (Chihowski & Hughes, 2008). These individuals also have a history of sexually deviancy
with people of all ages, not just the elderly (Ramsey– Klawsnik, 2003).
Victims of Elder Sexual Abuse:
Between 1996–2001, Virginia Adult Protective Services, substantiated 302 cases of sexual abuse
(Roberto & Teaster, 2005). Virginia Adult Protective Services investigates abuse of any individual
over the age of 18. These cases were examined in detail by offense, identifying problem with
offender, and age of victim were documented. Out of the 302 cases, 125 of those cases were elder
individuals (Roberto, et al., 2005). The types of hands–on offenses include: kissing/foundling–
58/125, vaginal rape– 4/125, digital penetration of the vagina or anus– 4/125 (Roberto, et al., 2005).
